Full Text: President Obama’s Powerful, Eloquent Statement on Trump’s Most Racist Move Yet

Politics • Views: 31,298

Here’s the statement just released by President Obama on Facebook, responding to Donald Trump’s destruction of DACA.

Immigration can be a controversial topic. We all want safe, secure borders and a dynamic economy, and people of goodwill can have legitimate disagreements about how to fix our immigration system so that everybody plays by the rules.

But that’s not what the action that the White House took today is about. This is about young people who grew up in America – kids who study in our schools, young adults who are starting careers, patriots who pledge allegiance to our flag. These Dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper. They were brought to this country by their parents, sometimes even as infants. They may not know a country besides ours. They may not even know a language besides English. They often have no idea they’re undocumented until they apply for a job, or college, or a driver’s license.

Over the years, politicians of both parties have worked together to write legislation that would have told these young people – our young people – that if your parents brought you here as a child, if you’ve been here a certain number of years, and if you’re willing to go to college or serve in our military, then you’ll get a chance to stay and earn your citizenship. And for years while I was President, I asked Congress to send me such a bill.

That bill never came. And because it made no sense to expel talented, driven, patriotic young people from the only country they know solely because of the actions of their parents, my administration acted to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people, so that they could continue to contribute to our communities and our country. We did so based on the well-established legal principle of prosecutorial discretion, deployed by Democratic and Republican presidents alike, because our immigration enforcement agencies have limited resources, and it makes sense to focus those resources on those who come illegally to this country to do us harm. Deportations of criminals went up. Some 800,000 young people stepped forward, met rigorous requirements, and went through background checks. And America grew stronger as a result.

But today, that shadow has been cast over some of our best and brightest young people once again. To target these young people is wrong – because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating – because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?

Let’s be clear: the action taken today isn’t required legally. It’s a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us. They are that pitcher on our kid’s softball team, that first responder who helps out his community after a disaster, that cadet in ROTC who wants nothing more than to wear the uniform of the country that gave him a chance. Kicking them out won’t lower the unemployment rate, or lighten anyone’s taxes, or raise anybody’s wages.

It is precisely because this action is contrary to our spirit, and to common sense, that business leaders, faith leaders, economists, and Americans of all political stripes called on the administration not to do what it did today. And now that the White House has shifted its responsibility for these young people to Congress, it’s up to Members of Congress to protect these young people and our future. I’m heartened by those who’ve suggested that they should. And I join my voice with the majority of Americans who hope they step up and do it with a sense of moral urgency that matches the urgency these young people feel.

Ultimately, this is about basic decency. This is about whether we are a people who kick hopeful young strivers out of America, or whether we treat them the way we’d want our own kids to be treated. It’s about who we are as a people – and who we want to be.

What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals – that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation. That’s how America has traveled this far. That’s how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.

For months, an anxious and uncertain President Trump was caught between opposing camps in the West Wing prodding him to either scrap or salvage an Obama-era program allowing undocumented immigrants brought to the country as minors to remain in the United States.

Last week, with a key court deadline looming for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, Mr. Trump, exasperated, asked his aides for “a way out” of a dilemma he created by promising to roll back the program as a presidential candidate, according to two people familiar with the exchange.

The other sickening aspect of this is the possibly irrevocable breach of trust between certain communities and the gov’t. Obviously, there was a lot of misgivings already, but if the list of DACA registrants is used as a basis to deport these folks, why would they ever trust the gov’t again?

From downstairs:

I’m fuming and freaking out right now.

I ran over to the local Staples store to pick up a few things. As I got out of my truck, I looked in the window of the car next to mine, and saw a baby. In a car with all of the windows closed, not running.

It’s 80 degrees here today.

I found the store manager and told him there was a baby in a car in front of his store. He called the cops.

Fucking people. That poor baby did not look good at all. I’m hoping like hell she’s okay.

What the hell is wrong with people? FUCK.

I’m so nervous and freaked out right now. Should I have busted a window on the car? Should I have stuck around until the cops got there?

That poor little kid. I hope she’s okay.

If Brietbart is scared of the numbers, that’s probably a good sign that Congressional Republicans should be too.

The Rude Pundit

“…President Trump’s decision is the sort of disruptive, wanton fuckery that we can accurately call “evil.” It will tear families apart. It will cruelly exile people to countries where they have nothing, no roots, no connection. It will end up damaging the economy as nearly a million people will no longer be paying taxes or Social Security. The only thing getting rid of DACA does is make racists feel good. That is it. That is solely it. There is no rational case to be made for punshing these law-abiding, education-oriented, hardworking Americans-in-all-but-papers. In fact, I’d fucking rather Trump had just said, “Yeah, too fuckin’ many Mexicans. We need more whites.” At least then, we’d cut through the bullshit justifications and maybe we’d get to see who Nazi salutes in agreement.

Trump’s wretched statement on his decision once again says that undocumented immigrants are responsible for everything from your uncle losing his job because his factory closed to your uncle’s opioid addiction. Or, as he put it, “lower wages and higher unemployment for American workers, substantial burdens on local schools and hospitals, the illicit entry of dangerous drugs and criminal cartels, and many billions of dollars a year in costs paid for by U.S. taxpayers. Yet few in Washington expressed any compassion for the millions of Americans victimized by this unfair system.” Again, facts are going to bite him on the ass on this, but, at this point, his ass probably no longer has any feeling because of how long he just sits around on it. For Trump and his idiot hordes, a Dreamer is no different than a cantaloupe-calved drug mule or dark-skinned rapist. Like I said, just skip the bullshit justifications and say you hate brown people.”

And therein lies the problem. The GOP was taken over by a hard core of racists, homophobes, Islamophobes, and xenophobes, who comprise about 30% of the electorate.

Another 15% of the population are either okay with racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and xenophobia, or can’t see it even when it’s in front of them, and vote GOP as a matter of course. Another 5-6% this year decided that HRC was probably going to win, and we’d need a GOP Congress to restrain all of her wild moderateness.

So, now the GOP Congress can’t even pass bills that 70% of America wants, because they’re deathly afraid of half that many people. And the middle are too disengaged, and either can’t or won’t believe how extreme the GOP now is.

Trump’s capacity to feel “delight” is limited to whatever brings him public adoration from the crowd he likes the most- …that is the percentage of people in the general population that hold willful ignorance, fear of “the other”, and a zero-sum game mentality as the predominate basis of their thinking.

Trump is a hollow shell incapable of feeling “delight” in the traditional sense. His capacity delight is the same as a shark in a feeding frenzy- no emotional base to it, it just is operating on pure instinct.

Guys like McConnell, Carson, and Abbott bother me the most about people on the right. These are guys who have eitehr been through polio, poverty, or in Abbott’s case are handicapped. And they have like no empathy at all for others. I know that March of Dimes thing about Mitch was proven wrong but Mitch still did benefit from federal research on Polio, research he would oppose if it was needed today.

“Most” voters don’t matter to Congressmen/women. Only their voters do, and racists will always vote for other racists.

The Congressional GOP has found itself painted into a corner by their base. They can go against the base and face a primary challenge that might cause them to lose. Or they could do what their base wants them to do and put them in a position where they stand a much greater chance of losing the general election. It’s not an enviable place to be as a politician, but given their actions over the last decade or so, they pretty much deserve it.

WRT what I mentioned above, that our entire government is being driven by about 1/3 of our population - that 30% were the ones threatening civil war if they, the minority, didn’t get their way.

What about the other 70% of us, who are now being ruled by that minority? At what point does a representative democracy stop being a democracy because it’s no longer representative?

I’m heartbroken. Were all our societal problems fixed in the Obama years? No, but we were at least heading in a good direction. We had a President that saw our LGBT citizenry as equals, saw that nonbelievers could be patriots, and was quite genuinely the most inclusive man ever to be President. And we replaced him with the total opposite of that. A narrow-minded, bullying, pig who only cares about himself and enriching him and his plutocratic family. A man that would rather kiss Putin’s ass than stand by our allies. To me, progressivism has always been about making life better for the next generations. Well, we have our work cut of us after Trump leaves.

re: #39 Birth Control Works

me too.

We are no longer (not that we ever really were) the Shining City on the Hill. The American Myth is being shown to be the sham it is.

I don’t know - as a foreigner, I do believe that America has been the Shining City on the hill. Embracing representative democracy and human rights, while freeing their society from the concept of a monarchy and aristocracy of birth, was a huge development in world society. The early decades of the nation were tainted with racist controversies, sure, but awful as they were, they weren’t out of the norm for the empires of history, and America represented something unseen before in the history of the world. The poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty is a real ideal - when I read it, it moved me, and I can only imagine how it moved thousands upon thousands of people who came here seeking a better life. The boroughs of New York alone are testimony to how successful that has been.

The decline of the American Dream is multifactorial, but in large part it has come about because of an unwillingness to improve upon the original model. Parliamentary democracies have adapted from their original monarchic roots, using the example of the American experiment, and have become more robust, more able to withstand the vicissitudes of populism. America’s electoral system has not, and in the modern age where mass media can create a cult out of millions of people, it has become all too easy to destroy America’s government and it’s ideals by attacking its electoral system. I don’t mean attacking it like the Russians, but through gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the like.

When I first moved here, I was a strident defender of American culture and its people, because of the ideals it represented, and because of its role as defender of the free world during the 20th century. We are in an age of unprecedented peace, in large part because American power and belief in the greater good has made it so. Unfortunately, America’s culture has become corrupted, and its people no longer believe in the same righteousness they once did. Perhaps they never will again. I don’t know. What I do know is that America’s media is so all-powerful that it bears the greatest responsibility for the dehumanisation of America. And if the world is to continue to enlighten, it must learn from America’s example, and not allow its people to be shorn of their humanity and principles by this new electronic demagoguery.

Two questions:

1. Why isn’t this convicted felon in prison?
2. Who believes this asshole has any “friends?”

1. Sentencing is pending. But I’m sure the Judge will love to hear about how he threatened a former Secretary of State while awaiting his hearing. That sort of think usually goes over well.

2. None that he didn’t pay for.

TBH, I’m really even not all that impressed by him. Yeah he has some compelling ideas but at the same time, he refuses to see the importance of cultural issues and I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t judge but I can’t take his I’m proud to be a New Yorker routine that he did after Cruz’s stupid New York values attack when he left one of the most diversity cities in the world for one of the least diverse places in the world in Vermont. I hope no one here from Vermont is offended by that but he (Sanders) has greatly benefited from the fact that Vermont doesn’t have the complex issues that a more diverse state like New York or Ilinois do.

The satellite images of Irma are not like the images of any hurricane I’ve seen before. Maybe the technology has increased, but that storm is huge, well defined and all the darkest colors used to indicate its intensity.

But there is no climate change. Nope. Only warmer waters to make these storms increasingly powerful.

STASI: Steve Mnuchin’s wife is a true dame without shame after that phony apology for her Instagram outburstLet them eat brioche!

Sorry Louise Antoinette Linton — your carefully scripted apology is as phony as you are. It’s gold-plated junk in your 24-karat world.

The woman who insulted the nation, as well as one mom of three in particular, for not being as wealthy and privileged as she, just issued a public apology. And she did it while posing in gowns with price tags between $9,000 and $10,000.

Oh, but not just luxury gowns, for everyday she’s also posing in your average lay-about-the-manicured-lawn casual getup. Not Gap exactly, well not unless Gap’s got $1,600 sportswear.

Mnuchin is a disgusting bankster shitweasel, born to privilege, and has never actually produced anything but some movies that were mostly other people’s work. He has built no factories or ships, writes no software, sells no tangible products, and has found no oil or even gold. (Near useless though it is, gold is at least a THING). He was known for “aggressive foreclosure practices” while he was honcho of the OneWest bankster gang.

It is no surprise that his newest trophy wife (I mean, look at the guy, then look at her) would be utterly out of touch with anything real. The woman grew up in an actual castle for crying out loud and had to withdraw her book of self-praise from publication when it was found to be full of fabrications.

Some of my youthful readers are developing wonderful imaginations. This pleases me. Imagination has brought mankind through the Dark Ages to its present state of civilization. Imagination led Columbus to discover America. Imagination led Franklin to discover electricity. Imagination has given us the steam engine, the telephone, the talking-machine, and the automobile, for these things had to be dreamed of before they became realities. So I believe that dreams — day dreams, you know, with your eyes wide open and your brain machinery whizzing — are likely to lead to the betterment of the world. The imaginative child will become the imaginative man or woman most apt to create, to invent, and therefore to foster civilization. A prominent educator tells me that fairy tales are of untold value in developing imagination in the young. I believe it.

Current wingnut meltdown…

Order by governor of US Virgin Islands to seize guns.

I’m not sure what to make of it. It doesn’t say from private citizens. For all I know it could be referring to securing gun shops and using ammunition from them if needed.

Still, I find it a bit troubling. You don’t write an order like that without being specific as to intent and purpose.

NYT:

9:50 a.m.

The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands says he has submitted an emergency declaration to the White House due to the approach of Hurricane Irma and is urging residents of the territory to take the storm seriously.

Gov. Kenneth Mapp says in a news briefing that he doesn’t want to frighten anyone but that forecasters predict the storm could skirt the territory or even pass directly over it.

Mapp says people in the islands may start to feel the storm’s effects around midmorning Wednesday.

i do lots of dangerous stuff. after careful training, planning, practice and understanding the risks involved.

we are not messing around with irma. she is a 5 and heading right for us

we spent the day battening down the hatches, clearing the decks and packing

early tomorrow we load the car with mom, mrs dm, cats and cat supplies mostly (i hope to squeeze a bag in somewhere)

we want to beat most of the exodus by a day or so
we’re in talahassee for starters to wait and see - from there we can go north, north west, or back south down either coast, depending. at least we’re out of the northbound “funnel”. i do not want our hurricane story to be 20+ hours stuck in traffic no bathrooms, no gas, no movement.

i dont care what happens to our “stuff” back home. i dont want our hurricane story to be we stayed and no power or food for a week, or the 8 mile drive to mom’s house was impassable and the phones were dead and i had no idea….

our story will be the non-event road trip. we got out early and nothing happened. we set up shop 500 miles away and nothing happened. we got our work done by wi-fi and nothing happened. (and when i say “work done”, i mean checking in at lgf 20 times a day). we had to move, which we did, and nothing happened.

eventually we came home and found whatever we found.

i cant in good conscience wish these storms to go somewhere else. there are people almost everywhere. a u-turn would be nice.

if you are anywhere in the immediate or future path, take good care and do your plan.

this is the first time ever that im evacuating. it’s the first time ive’ seen a five coming directly for me. i have responsibilities. im neither scared nor worried. we are way out ahead.

Weird conversations with people I’ve known for a long time. That’s all I get today. Most recently, a guy I’ve sold several bikes to, and bought them each back when he needed the money (the only guy I’ve done that with) came in to look for his next one. He has a vinagaroon in his house (he told me after I told him of my two from a couple of days ago) and he lets it be, figuring it is there for a reason so it should stay until it’s done. In the first conversation I had with him after my accident, he told me about when he was in a car that was totaled, but he came out of it OK because of the protective moves he made. Then he said, ‘I don’t know if you know this about me, I am very smart.’

That was one. Now I have a customer.

Inevitably, many people will remain, many because they don’t have $1,000 in ready cash to do it, or they’re old, or they don’t have a car. Or they’re stubborn, stupid, or don’t believe it’s their time to die.

Imagine a young girl, age 4 or 5, traveling with her parents into the United States as they make the hard decision to pursue a better life here. Imagine that child growing up as your student, your co-worker, your friend. Because of the president’s decision today, she now must live in fear that she will soon be thrown out and sent back to a country she has never known.
This story speaks to the experience of roughly 800,000 people known as DREAMers here in America today. These children didn’t choose to come here, but now many of them are grown with families of their own. They’re paying taxes. They’ve joined the workforce. They went to college. Some of them joined the military. Now, they’ll be sent to countries they don’t even remember.
These people are all Americans. So let’s be clear: throwing them out is cruel. It is inhumane. And it is not America. Congress and the American people now have an obligation to step up and show our neighbors that they’re welcome here, in the only place they’ve ever called home.

He probably does. He’s just too stupid to understand that most Republicans in Congress are cool with ending DACA. And even if there was a bipartisan bill, McConnell might WILL keep it from a vote out of spite.

Fixed that.

Having elements of the 101st Chairborne engaging in small arms beach defense against oncoming hurricanes seems like the kind of thing to encourage. Perhaps they could be convinced that their success in such missions would piss off liberals.

Relevant code section in full:

§ 1522. Authority of Governor for the attachment of articles and to order the closing of establishments

Whenever the Governor orders part or all of the military forces of the Virgin Islands into Territorial Active Military Service under section 1519 he may, by written order—

(1) Direct the Adjutant General or other appropriate authority to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material, and any other property that may be required by the military forces.

(2) Prohibit the sale, exchange, loan or donation, during the emergency of arms, ammunition, explosives, gasoline, incendiary material or alcoholic beverages, and the closing of any establishment in which any such property is found.

(3) Declare a curfew, during such periods and with respect to such areas and persons as in his discretion the public safety requires.

(4) Any other powers authorized by law.

Upon termination of the emergency, compensation shall be paid by the Government of the Virgin Islands for the loss, damage, or destruction of any private property taken for Government purposes during the emergency.

“You patriots realize, of course, that the massed reports of thousands of your AR-15s firing from the beach will drive off the hurricane and prevent landfall? If you’re too late for that, it can still force the storm surge to retreat from low-lying areas. True. Confirmed. Fact. This news has been suppressed by the Gorebull Worming communists to keep their manufactured storms from being suppressed by the righteous indignation of gun owners and Christians.”

That would be my guess as well. Legalese for “don’t fuck with the National Guard during a disaster”.

But I hadn’t realized how little you’d need to change in something like that to end up with a sweeping declaration of martial law.

Good for you. Tallahassee looks a good intermediate place to stay ahead of the curve. Be sure to tell your neighbors and the cops you are leaving early. If Miami does get dough-popped, they’ll know not to waste time searching your address.

Inevitably, many people will remain, many because they don’t have $1,000 in ready cash to do it, or they’re old, or they don’t have a car. Or they’re stubborn, stupid, or don’t believe it’s their time to die.

Good luck, dear Lizard, to you and yours. Hope your house(s) make it.

this is the first time ever that im evacuating. it’s the first time ive’ seen a five coming directly for me. i have responsibilities. im neither scared nor worried. we are way out ahead.

We have upped our likelihood of bugging out to 50-50. We’re leaving early, if needed, because we’ll have a light camper in tow.

i gotta say im way to in survival mode to think ‘privilege’. though maybe for a minute….we both have virtual jobs and are self employed - dont need permission. got a car, made it to the atm, got a fist full of credit cards. have a hotel reservation 500 miles away, and (hopefully) can get gas and food along the way. if we have to in three days we can keep traveling. so yeah, i guess some

otoh, when i wrote i dont care what happens to our stuff - that’s not privilege, that’s prioritizing. i do assume we’ll have a place to come back to, or somewhere else to go, and with virtual work, were ok. what i was saying though is that irma can take everything i own with a memory attached. i still got the memories. and most of the people. and if i lose a harley or a car or whatever (whether privilege or lots of hard work got it ) we’re alive and unharmed. the stuff you surround yourself with is gravy.

i want and want for very little. i have some stuff. if i lose most of it i wont miss it or be too much different, or so i like to tell myself

For those who are evacuating, be sure and take as many pictures of the outside and inside of your home as you can. Open cabinet doors and drawers and take photos of the contents. Take pictures of every room, every wall, every piece of furniture plus everything in the garage.

i do lots of dangerous stuff. after careful training, planning, practice and understanding the risks involved.

we are not messing around with irma. she is a 5 and heading right for us

we spent the day battening down the hatches, clearing the decks and packing

early tomorrow we load the car with mom, mrs dm, cats and cat supplies mostly (i hope to squeeze a bag in somewhere)

we want to beat most of the exodus by a day or so
we’re in talahassee for starters to wait and see - from there we can go north, north west, or back south down either coast, depending. at least we’re out of the northbound “funnel”. i do not want our hurricane story to be 20+ hours stuck in traffic no bathrooms, no gas, no movement.

i dont care what happens to our “stuff” back home. i dont want our hurricane story to be we stayed and no power or food for a week, or the 8 mile drive to mom’s house was impassable and the phones were dead and i had no idea….

our story will be the non-event road trip. we got out early and nothing happened. we set up shop 500 miles away and nothing happened. we got our work done by wi-fi and nothing happened.

And CNN and the NYT will theorise as to whether cruelty might be a valid public policy, in the interest of balance.

I’ve made no decision (nor come up with any particular plan.) My go-to weather guy still going with his 3 scenarios, one (least likely) with it going off to sea; two, having it come over land from the gulf, slowing down, still dropping lots of rain; three, the “worstest,” having it veer to sea from Florida so it can pick up steam over warm water and smack the everloving shit out of us. He says it won’t be clear till the weekend, and will be here Monday or Tuesday (which doesn’t leave much time to get out of Dodge.)

Decisions. Decisions. I need to get gas tomorrow, and I guess some extra cash and foodstuffs. So far, the only preparation I’ve done is making ice and trying to eat stuff from the freezer.

Other than our normal camping prep, we’ve focused on triaging our documents and training the idiot dog to walk up a ramp into the camper. We’re leaving all the replaceable shit behind for the insurance adjuster. I considered taking one of the guns—it would just be a complicator, so they stay in the safe.
