Emotionally, the man-baby in the White House is stuck at around age 5 or 6: Stung Over Being Called a Moron, Donald Trump Now Insists NBC is ‘Run by Morons’.

The president of the United States is still furious at his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for reportedly calling him a “moron” or, upon further reporting, a “fucking moron.” And he won’t stop venting to friends and senior aides about the news outlet that broke the story.

In yet another sign of how deeply NBC News has managed to get under his skin, Donald Trump has, in recent days, taken to saying that the network is “run by morons,” two sources who have spoken to the president told The Daily Beast.

Atlas fire is 25,000 acres and not contained.
Tubbs fire is also 25,000 acres and not contained. There are several smaller fires as well in those areas.

In total, 1 person has died, more than 75,000 acres was torched across 8 northern California counties, 1,500 structures destroyed, and 100+ injured. Winds are expected to pick back up tonight.

Some reports are suggesting the fires were the result of power lines entangled in trees/branches sparking the blazes during high winds.

The area around Santa Rosa was hard hit as well as Calistoga.

No, what I fear is paying the price for his massive incompetence and narcissism. Pruitt is probably the worst of the cabinet picks, though it’s a close fight with Price for that. But he’ll have a Fed Chairman to appoint soon, and he’s too stupid to grasp macroeconomics. I’ve heard he’s interested in some of the Gold Standard morons.

Beyond that, while the county is definitely suburban as a whole, it’s moved closer to urban than it is to rural - when I was in junior high, the city counsel used to describe Yorba Linda as “semi-rural” but beyond a few old neighborhoods still zoned for horses, the town does not look rural. And that holds true for a lot of the county.

I keep turning to Mrs. FBW and saying, “OMG, this shit is SO SIMPLE, I can’t believe how totally incompetent they are at it!”

Take Pence’s little stunt yesterday. All it would take to pull it off properly would have been to let the pool reporters into the game, just as if Pence had decided on the spur of the moment to leave because of the protests, and then for Trump to keep his big mouth shut.

Even as it was, they could have maybe pulled it off with the pool reporters left in the van. It would have been a harder sell to convince people it was spontaneous, but they probably could have convinced more people.

But Trump, being Trump, COULDN’T STAND for this to be about Pence, and not him, so he HAD TO Tweet that it was all his idea! And that made it transparently a political stunt, flying halfway across the country to walk out in a huff.

I’ve been thinking about why welfare style state economics worked in Northern Europe but didn’t work here. At first, I thought it was because we had less of an appetite for socialism than our European counterparts and I think there’s still some truth in that but I also think Nordic style socialism was able to work because it was harder for the Nordic right to point to an “other” who would be receiving those benefits. Americans by and large loved the New Deal. Not all but the period was called the New Deal Consensus for a reason since much of its policies were embraced by Republicans as well. It really only to me seems that Americans turned against “big government” programs when LBJ proposed the Great Society which would have expanded a lot of those programs to America’s racial minorities.

Like I said, it’s a trend. Brown lost Orange County in 2010 (to Whitman) 57-37, but improved in 2014 (while still losing to Kashkari) 55-44. The next couple of cycles will be interesting. With Fienstein saying she’s running again, there will probably be a Republican on the ballot in 2018, so we’ll see how that goes. But then again, in the Senate primary last year, Sanchez and Harris combined for the majority of votes in Orange County (Sanchez was a local Representative) and only one Republican reached double digits (also a sign of how bad the GOP has gotten out here).

So in short, I think the American left who want the Democrats to channel FDR ignore that FDR had to work with some very unsavory individuals to get his legislation passed. The most right wing Dem Obama dealt with was Joe Manchin. FDR dealt with Theodore Bilbo and honest to God KKKers in his ranks and men who supported legalized lynching. And FDR was not exactly great on race either given his refusal to desegregate the military or teh interment of the Japanese-Americans during WWII. FDR was a fine President but he had a lot of flaws too that the purer than thou left overlook when dissing the modern Democratic Party.

My wingnut cousin said that even though he was against Obama and really didn’t want him elected, that “at least it would take race off the table”. By this he meant basically that now blacks had been allowed to elect one of their own as President, they’d have to shut up about racial injustice.

But they didn’t. In fact, they started complaining about cops shooting them! And they said our society is racist!

Basically, black people being unwilling to sit down, shut up, and accept what white America gave them was what brought a certain kind of white people’s racism to a full, rolling boil, and Trump was totally willing to Go There, like nobody else would.

I don’t think Trump’s approach would have worked in either 2008 or 2012. It took 8 years of the GOP promising to make the Black Guy In The White House go away, to make him suffer, to make all his accomplishments vanish to get those white people THAT MAD.

Yet Hugh Thompson and his crew just happened through on an unrelated mission and realized immediately what was happening. Nixon realized that he either had to prosecute the rest of the pack or let Calley off the hook. He chose the latter, probably because of Calley’s popularity.

The pattern of places where t**** won or did well for a Republican is a sign of this, IMO.

With respect to consolidation and monopolies, the only answer is to dust off the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. It’ll be good for the economy, and it’s an easy sell: we all have smartphones because we broke up AT&T in the 80s. That’s what competition does, it moves the economy forward, it’s good for the workers, which is good for the consumers, which is good for business.

Now this squeeze is expected to extend significantly into white collar occupations with advances in machine learning etc., plus an ongoing determination by the powers that be to perform worldwide wage arbitrage.

“Go to college” advice and retraining programs aren’t going to cut it going forward. IMO the minimum ante for real discussion of the 21st century economy is a guaranteed living income.

It’ll be good for the economy, and it’s an easy sell: we all have smartphones because we broke up AT&T in the 80s. That’s what competition does, it moves the economy forward, it’s good for the workers, which is good for the consumers, which is good for business.

Looking back still farther, the development of the economy all the way back to the mid-70s has been that tasks that required people in America to do them have increasingly NOT required people in America to do them, starting with the least skill-intensive tasks, but over time climbing higher and higher up the skill ladder.

People in America are less needed because either the tasks no longer need as many people, or they need not be done in America, or a combination.

The most obvious way people thought to combat this was to climb the skill ladder, but now even young lawyers are finding that document review that used to require trained lawyers plowing through paper can be done by computers. So, no, getting an education WON’T save you if the task doesn’t need to be done by people.

So, naturally some are turning more to the ‘in America’ part, with blue collar jobs that can’t be done elsewhere - construction and such.

To me, it all boils down to excess labor, because of increased productivity. It doesn’t take all of us working full time to make or do all the shit we need or want made or done. 80 years ago we redefined what ‘full time’ meant, because we had more workers than we needed if they were working 10 hours a day. We need to redefine work, the necessity of work, and the compensation for work again.

I feel like, when I was in high school and college in the 90s, the thinking was our economy was changing from manufacturing to service. That was a big reason behind the push that everyone should go to college, because the workplace was changing. One strategy is the light-a-single-candle approach, where the idea is that a single person changing will affect the people around them, and so on. It may be the only enduring long term strategy for positive change.

There are many strategies for negative changes - anarchists, for example. Those approaches are easy compared to actually building a better life.

That’s a big part of what makes this so difficult — past reform efforts have often been driven in large part by giving the voters a target. It’s easiest if the target is a person, such as JD Rockefeller. The right likes to rub it in by mocking the futility of shooting a few rich people (or of confiscating their fortunes).

The Occupy movement gave us the 1% as targets, which still isn’t accurate enough.

The real problem, IMO, is the system itself. An economic system that produces the results we see in America is unacceptable on its face, and badly needs to be reformed. The highs are too high (nobody earns $ 1 billion) and the lows are too low (nobody should be that destitute in a rich nation).

But that’s way too abstract for the great majority of voters.

I view the purpose of the “targets” many RW politicians identify and demonize is to give the majority of voters distractions to prevent them from realizing that they, too, are the politicians’ “targets.” Otherwise, how in the hell is it possible for an alleged billionaire to win the presidency by convincing millions of voters that he is “just like them” and is “very concerned about their welfare” while he pushes to take away their healthcare/make it more expensive and pass tax reform which will make him richer and them poorer? If the answer is yes, that is the candidate that got their vote.

One wouldn’t think something like this would happen in a country that many describe as being “an exceptional nation,” but it does, and it keeps happening and unqualified, BS-peddling politicians keep running and winning. The latest example of this occurred when Marsha Blackburn announced her campaign for the Senate soon after Corker announced he isn’t running for re-election. I’m not a misogynist. I’m a pragmatist, so I know that based on Marsha Blackburn’s record, she shouldn’t be considered a good candidate for Corker’s seat, but she has a good chance of replacing him in the Senate. Another example was Roy [“I’m an openly racist, bigoted, homophobic, Islamophobic, bible-thumping, homegrown anarchist and moron”] Moore’s win over Luther Strange in Alabama last month.

It’s when the 250 Lakota massacred at Wounded Knee are not regarded as the largest mass shooting in US History

No, that’s not racism. That’s proper use of the word “Mass Shooting”. Whatever else Wounded Knee was, it was NOT the same thing as a Mass Shooting, which is generally carried out by one or at most a small number of perpetrators, whereas Wounded Knee was carried out by 500 Federal troops.

It IS racism that my generation of Americans were not taught the truth about Wounded Knee and other atrocities carried out by Americans, especially American soldiers. The massacre itself was racism. How the Indians were treated by colonists and later by the governments, THAT was racism. How we treat them, and how we hide our history to this day, THAT is racism.

But it’s not racism to not call it a Mass Shooting!

And what’s your point? To minimize Las Vegas? Why?

I think it’s to give context to mass shootings and the fact that there have been mass shootings before this, many of them lynchings/massacres, including Wounded Knee.

Many of them were carried out on racial grounds - attacking black enclaves or Native American settlements. Many are forgotten to most.

Wounded Knee is just one of many - and I had the opportunity to visit that part of the Black Hills some years back. It’s quite moving, and its remoteness also means many skip it when visiting the area. It’s far more likely you’ll see Mt. Rushmore than Wounded Knee - even though the whole area is still claimed by Native Americans and they have a superior claim based on the US Government violating the Treaty of Fort Laramie.

My answer to your question of why consists of three parts. Part one of why some Americans do/say what they do/say is to avoid accepting ownership of the role one or one’s ancestors plays/played in racism and in our continued issue with gun violence. Part two is an attempt to maintain the status quo by shutting down any/all possibilities of acknowledging that racism exists and that we have a gun violence problem and these matters should be addressed; in other words, the old adage, “Out of sight, out of mind” is applied and reinforced. Part three involves admitting that we still have a long way to go before we can really form “a more perfect union” and we are not an “exceptional nation” of persons at this point in our history.

A few years ago there was a very small quake with the epicenter about 1/4 mile from our house. The S and P waves arrived simultaneously, which made for an interesting motion.

LEOs are still trying to figure out a motive with the Vegas shooter. Mental illness seems to be one of the factors.

Of course, the fact that he was able to buy dozens of semi autos, got the gear to make them functional full automatics, and purchased thousands upon thousands of rounds, wasn’t a red flag.

The ATF can’t do the kind of cross-checks we need, thanks to a hobbled system put in place by the NRA. Red flags should be raised when someone buys those kinds of quantities, whether in one shot, or in short span of time.

It doesn’t take a whole lot of intelligence to realize that most people in this country are not critical thinkers. It’s hard enough for most of us paying attention to keep from automatically accepting things that confirm our biases. For people who don’t want to put in a whole lot of thought, it wouldn’t take much to reach them in just the right way to get them to buy your outrageous claim by building it on a little bit of truth, and a little bit of what they want to believe in. What I find interesting and telling at the same time is the sophistication shown in the states that turned the election. The more they look into it the more it is being revealed they had very targeted areas they worked on. Not just they manipulated all of the social media.

That targeted approach took some American political knowledge to be that well planned and utilized. Somebody helped coordinate that, and even if it was an American group, they did it under Russian knowledge. Too much funny business.

What it means for the next election is even more important. If this becomes the norm we really will never have an unquestioned election again. It’s been bad enough since 2000 anyway. This has to be made into a huge thing, and in this media world, that too is a problem.

Even more so, I suspect, when the ads are negative — let’s face it, nowadays that’s more of a political than an industrial tactic. Pro tip: Ads work. They make you aware of something, and they make you disposed to a certain attitude about it. Works just wonderfully when appealing to shameful aspects of your own personality. Works best of all when individuals can dissociate themselves from the group.

Sometimes I don’t like my species much. (Eukarya in general have a lot to answer for.) But sometimes I think we can promote a sort of virtuous spiral toward the light. (I’m a hippie at heart, so sue me.)

A scene like this was playing out here in NH around the time we moved here. A couple had built a prepper bunker and couldn’t or wouldn’t pay property tax. It got pretty tense as LE thought they might be dealing with booby-trapped property when they finally were taken into custody.

That’d be Ed and Elaine Brown, currently guests of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

There was some controversy over the property because it was believed to be boobytrapped with bombs. It took a very long time, but the property finally sold “as is” in 2015. That owner put it back on the market in 2016:

And the latest news seems to be that the town of Plainfield settled to get $36K to settle back taxes from the Feds earlier this year.

What a strange, bizarre story. I know of a guy on YouTube who champions Ed and Elaine Brown. Partly because he’s a sovereign citizen and partly because he believes in what Jesus says about visiting the sick and imprisoned.

Answering baseless and stupid accusations is just like denying being a pigfucker. It immediately cedes the ground of discussion to the accuser. Whether there is a convenient cudgel or not, the American fascists will attack, whether there is anything to the accusation or not. Benghazi, for instance - an attack made up out of whole cloth.

It’s like being concerned that punching Nazis will give them grounds to equate Nazi violence and hatred with Nazi-punching. These people are fascists. Their motivations are evil and their tactics do not require any anchors in reality. They will make up a reason to do their evil whether they are given one or not. You cannot try to keep them from finding a reason or an avenue of attack - they will create one if there isn’t one. The real battle is in the realm of media and public influence - without wins there, lies will win over truth.

It just doesn’t matter. The right has a seemingly infinite number of cudgels to use vs. the left, and whether they are grounded in reality or not appears to be irrelevant. So to hell with trying to appease the unappeasable.
