I contend that there is no GOP civil war, at least not one being waged by the likes of Corker and Flake. They’ve bowed out, they’re staying long enough to stuff their pockets in the hopes of a cushy private sector job on which to retire. They both voted hours after Flake’s speech to screw over millions of Americans to shove millions of dollars into the pockets of the rich elite. The civil war is an illusion that some are engaging in to tell themselves that there is a fight for the soul of the GOP. It’s an illusion for a simple reason: The GOP has no soul because they sold it away decades ago to the highest bidder.

I agree. If there is no change in their approach to public policy, there is no change to their intentions. It is still all about screwing the poor and the middle class and benefitting the rich.

Well, I have the info for the company that makes our chlorinator pumps. I’ll be calling them in the morning to get two pumps on the village credit card with rush shipping. (I convinced the other board members we really should have a back-up pump for situations like this one.)

I wonder if my mom is forcing herself to stay up to watch this?
She’s a HUGE baseball fan, but hasn’t been able to really watch any games for the last couple years since she dumped her cable.

In fact, the only reason she’s even able to watch the World Series is that in the last few weeks she’s been able to get her local FOX TV channel to tune in. I think it’s due to that TV antenna collapse down near Miami a few weeks ago.

Exactly, Flake and Corker aren’t standing up for anything other than the worry that Trump’s antics will hurt the party. They could give a fuck less about the poors, they just don’t want them to see the true face of the party.

Flake and Corker have enough foresight to know that the longer Cheeto goes on unchecked, the harsher the payback will be when the Democrats get back on top. The worst case, from their point of view, is that Democrats will regain both houses of Congress and that a new Democratic President will take office in 2021 and begin a program akin to FDR’s Hundred Days. This will sweep away 40 years of Reagan-initiated looting and pillage, with repeal of voodoo tax breaks, real action on climate change, new teeth for civil rights, prosecution of war profiteers and foreign agents, single payer healthcare, etc. By then, if we survive at all, Trump will be so discredited that Republicans will be as rare as avowed Nazis were in Germany in the summer of ‘45.
In short, their whole world is in danger and they are trying to sound a warning to the rest of the greed is good crowd. It has so far fallen on deaf ears with that audience but others have heard and will act.

You Can Officially Bring A Gun Into Texas Psychiatric Hospitals

Gun owners can now bring their firearms into Texas’ 10 state psychiatric hospitals.

Read that last sentence one more time.

Prior to open carry being the law of the land in Texas, guns were banned in state psychiatric facilities. No one — visitors, deliverymen, et cetera — could bring firearms on the campuses. Even local law enforcement officers, who were already allowed to bring their weapons into the facilities, regularly locked up their guns before entering Austin State Hospital. You know, just in case.

As of June 2016 visitors can bring guns into the buildings where patients live. Employees are still prohibited from bringing them on campus. Which makes sense, right? Someone visiting a facility literally filled with mentally unstable people can bring a loaded firearm in. But if that firearm is taken and used by one of the mentally ill or emotionally disturbed people in that facility, no one actually working there (let’s call them targets) could defend themselves.

The majority of the people are fine.

I would imagine a significant portion of the voters also voted (R) simply because they always vote (R) and didn’t know a lot about either Trump or Clinton.

There is a reason FOX and fellow travellers are going all-in on attacking Hillary Clinton. They are desperately trying to divert attention from what is going on.

texastribune.org

At the end of last year, Waller County, Tex. won a court case to keep a ban on guns in its courthouse. Ken Paxton is court-shopping in Texas to find another court that will overturn that ban.

He is also trying to force cities to rescind bans on open-carry in city halls.

This has been a fight in Texas for several years, ever since wingnuts seized the state legislature (always a bad idea to let conservatives control a whole government).

Rep. Jonathan Strickland (R-Wingnuttia) filed a bill to allow unlicensed concealed carry anywhere.

dallasnews.com

My own state allows open carry, but guns are banned from all public buildings.

Not so much. They are a lot louder. That’s it.

Note the counter-protests and rallies every time those guys show up. They are not the majority, they are just trying to make it appear they are.

Recently when they tried to plan several protests at once across the country, counter-protesters organised and they chose instead to cancel their rallies.

Also, as far as protests go, even the Nazi rallies and counter-protesters have been far tamer than a lot of the protests against the Vietnam War, or Civil Rights marches.

As it turns out, most of the Nazi douches fold up like a cheap suit when challenged.

She Who Must Be Be Obeyed and I spend a lot of time in the UK in the spring. SHMBO’s sister lives north of London and is married to one of the founding members of Silly Wizard. He is a guitar geek and in the Scots Trad Hall of Fame. Collects and sells. He has had a recent hard-on for Kathy Wingert’s axes. He’s got three of them.

Sorry, got off track.

The spring 2017 trip was weird. Everyone up in Edinburgh wanted to know “What the hell happened with the election? Why didn’t Hillary win?”

What could I say?

“Russians and rock dumb stupid.”

Night all. See you on the flip side.

Yeah it still stumps me even a year later. It amazes me that so many projected something that Trump never had. There’s a lot of bigoted attitudes in this country that honestly shock me how prevalent they are.

I don’t know. A lot of different figures are used to say what the number of people who are killed by guns is: The most-cited figure I can come up with is 33,000 per annum.

That by itself is a horrible statistic compared to other First World countries (and a lot of Third World countries).

Gun manufacturers seem to be approaching the market in some ways that the tobacco industry is. A whole bunch of guns are owned by a small fraction of the population. Most people own none, some like me own one, a few own two or three, and a tiny fraction own an arsenal. The market for guns seems pretty saturated here.

So manufacturers are pushing for things like relaxing restrictions on exports, so they can sell more overseas. (That is where they are similar to tobacco companies.)

As a percentage of the population, the Washington Post reported last year that gun ownership as a percentage of the populace was the lowest in forty years.

They list a number of different surveys in the article, and I would note that some gun owners are paranoid enough they probably wouldn’t answer (or say they own none). That said, the trend line has been steadily down for ownership since the Seventies.

Wingnut pastor (one of those who did the laying-on of hands over Donald Trump, worshipping their Golden Calf) went on a tear Sunday accusing Hollywood of literally sacrificing children, drinking their blood, and bringing witches to movie sets.

He also resurrected the dipshit “Spirit Cooking” nonsense, applying it to Hollywood.

So when do the witch trials and inquisition start? I guess I’m up against the wall first… .

“They sacrifice children at the highest levels in Hollywood,” Howard-Browne declared. “They drink blood of young kids. This is a fact. That is why the next thing to be exposed will be all the pedophilia that is going to come out of Hollywood and out of Washington, D.C. The human sacrifice and the cannibalism has been going on for years. Some of you say, ‘Oh, they don’t do that.’ It’s worse than what you think. You remember when the whole spirit cooking thing came out? That’s commonplace, ladies and gentlemen. And many of the Hollywood actors that you go see on a screen, what you don’t know [is] they bring a witch, they do a big seance right there on the set and they worship devils and they allow devils to come into them before they take the part of what they’re going to act. It’s a fact what I am telling you.”

with exciting, fake-anti-corporatist candidates who’ll get the morons to turn out

but his problem is the human capital he has to work with. they rant and rave and scare small children

most gop voters are bland suburbanites who vote republican because “the gop is pro business” and “democrats will raise my taxes”. they’re scared by nutcases and fanatics

still, when barely half of voters bother to come out, results are unpredictable…

There is a fight in court over a massive cross in Prince Georges County, Maryland over the state paying for its maintenance with tax money.

Governor Larry Hogan (R) misdirects (because conservatives are good at that) the issue that the state is being sued over (I Amendment rights) with patriotism (atheists aren’t patriots and they’re trying to sue to make displays of patriotism unlawful).

No one is suing over a patriotic display. This is not a patriotic display - the alleged secular nature of this cross (a memorial to WW1) has always been downplayed in favour of religion.

On Facebook Gov. Hogan posted:

Larry Hogan
last Friday

This is outrageous. The Peace Cross was built in 1925 by families in Prince George’s County who joined with the American Legion to honor their fallen from World War I. Marylanders are united in showing respect for our veterans.

I’m a native Prince Georgian and have passed by this memorial thousands of times. I view it as an incredible tribute to those who came before us and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The idea that memorializing our soldiers killed in battle on foreign lands to make the world safe for democracy is somehow unconstitutional goes against everything we stand for as Americans. Our administration will fight this unacceptable overreach. Enough is enough.

It’s infuriating how easy the media fall for this transparent attempt to smear someone who is no longer in politics. The Clintons, aside from behind the scenes support of their friends and allies, are not going to run for office again. There’s no real point in even giving the GOP the time of day about this latest witch hunt, but the media will argue that, since the GOP said it, it must be covered.

What they could do is set up a comparison of the charges against Clinton and against Trump and allow the readers to weigh the differences, but that would be too easy, I guess.

I agree. There are only a very few journalists willing to buck the trend and pay attention to the political and ethical disaster now in control of the federal government. Journalism has become more a matter of reacting to events — including fabricated ones — rather than of revealing the truth behind the events. The second is harder than the first, and is riskier when dealing with a political party bankrolled by billionaires.

QFT

The reality of course is that the IRS was doing its job under conditions that Congress left them - trying to enforce a law that was already a difficult task because the GOP was crippling its enforcement and administrative oversight capabilities.

With the rush of entities trying to gain nonprofit status, the IRS resorted to a test to see if the entity should get nonprofit status. They keyed off group name, and the GOP turned this into a partisan attack on the IRS, even though all entities were flagged this way, not just tea party groups.

In the hours after the Kennedy assassination, after Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit and was identified as the president’s assassin, a Secret Service officer named Mike Howard was dispatched to Oswald’s apartment. Howard found a little green address book, and on its 17th page under the heading “I WILL KILL” Oswald listed four men: an FBI agent named James Hosty; a right-wing general, Edwin Walker; and Vice President Richard Nixon. At the top of the list was the governor of Texas, John Connally. Through Connally’s name, Oswald had drawn a dagger, with blood drops dripping downward.

re: #115 Amalthea’s Shadow

Yes, it should have given me the chance to visit her (living in Grand Lake as she does); my SO and I haven’t yet made that trip. We are planning a long roam around The West next year, now that we are retired. Rocky Mountain National Park is on the list of places to go to.

I myself actually live in Central California. I absolutely love Colorado and have been there a half dozen times or so. There is so much more of the state I’d like to see. I’ve really liked the Denver area also. So I consider you lucky for living there.

Now let’s just hope that this screwed up administration doesn’t do something incredibly stupid to the National Park system before The Mr and I can get to traveling!

Yes, visit soon and often, with such a grand excuse!

Cross your fingers for the Parks. Latest is the proposal to hike the rates on the most popular parks, with an additional tack-on for summer rates — let’s make sure citizens on a budget can’t afford to visit THEIR public lands. My husband got his old-geezer Parks pass last year for $10; I won’t be 62 till March so I’ll be paying the steeper price. Just waiting for the GOP SOBs to decide that they’re not going to honor those passes for the expensive Parks without some additional fee.

I’d love to live in Grand Lake. Maybe when I win the lottery, and lose my mom — she couldn’t live at altitude any more, sad to say. But she had a good run — she and my aunt swear they’ve been over every pass in Colorado, in 40+ years of rambling, and they tent-camped till they were in their mid-70’s.

Terrifying home invasion here in the valley. Again, a jewelry company owning family were the victims. These is a class of robber that actively hunts jewelry people for robbery given the high value of our merch. Yikes.

The home invasion occurred around 2 a.m. at 8007 Broadleaf Ave., said an officer at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Mission Division.

There were anywhere from four to seven suspects, armed with rifles, stun guns and handguns involved, according to reports from the scene.

Police said the suspects beat up at least one of the residents inside the home and that person suffered minor injuries. CBS2 reported another resident was shocked with a stun gun and that three residents were taken to hospitals for minor injuries.

So, greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

The right wing is still baffling with bullshit about the Steele dossier and claiming that this disproves everything that happens with Trump, and that it’s really Clinton’s fault for all this.

Of course they do. That’s all they ever do. Blame Clinton for something that the GOP initially funded as oppo research, which isn’t illegal unless you’re going to a foreign nation to spy on your political enemies. That’s what Trump and his cronies did.

But let’s go a step further. We’re talking about what we know about Trump and his cronies.

Flynn’s lies, meetings, and getting fired had nothing to do with the dossier. Being an undeclared foreign agent had nothing to do with the dossier.

Manafort under investigation for money laundering and for being an undeclared foreign agent - again, nothing to do with the dossier.

Kushner lying multiple times on his SF-86? That’s not the dossier.
Donny Jr lying about the meetings with Russians. That’s not the dossier.

Trump sacking Yates, Preet Bharara, or James Comey? That’s not the dossier.
Trump engaging in obstruction of justice? That’s not the dossier.
Trump engaging in violations of the Emoluments clause? That’s not the dossier.
Self dealing and nepotism? That’s not the dossier.

The dossier confirms what we’ve known all along. Trump is a reactionary know nothing who is addled and vindictive and thinks he’s all knowing and has a great memory despite reality that shows the exact opposite.

Where the dossier matters in the grand scheme is that everyone fixates on the unconfirmed golden shower story. That’s the least important detail, but it goes to his emotional stand/condition.

OK so Marky Mark has his Brenda Lee moment!

Prominent political journalist stenographer Mark Halperin apologized Wednesday night after five women told CNN that Halperin sexually harassed them while he was working at ABC News.

“During this period, I did pursue relationships with women that I worked with, including some junior to me,” Halperin said in a statement to CNN. “I now understand from these accounts that my behavior was inappropriate and caused others pain. For that, I am deeply sorry and I apologize. Under the circumstances, I’m going to take a step back from my day-to-day work while I properly deal with this situation.”

MSNBC told CNN that Halperin will leave his role as an analyst for the network given the allegations.

“We find the story and the allegations very troubling,” MSNBC said in a statement to CNN. “Mark Halperin is leaving his role as a contributor until the questions around his past conduct are fully understood.”

I had to do a slight correction on the TPM article…

There’s no wow here. There’s no surprise.

Guys in a position of power abuse power all the time.

That he’s gotten booted from the air in less than a few hours after the allegations were made public? That’s news.

The problem though is how long did ABC and other media outlets know of this and still employed him?

But women who spoke to CNN say he also had a dark side not made public until now. The stories of harassment shared with CNN range in nature from propositioning employees for sex to kissing and grabbing one’s breasts against her will. Three of the women who spoke to CNN described Halperin as, without consent, pressing an erection against their bodies while he was clothed. Halperin denies grabbing a woman’s breasts and pressing his genitals against the three women.

Not made public until now, but those at those outlets knew or had reason to know… again, another guy in position of power thinks he can do as he pleases until he’s finally outed as a sex predator, just like Trump, Ailes, O’Reilly, Weinstein and countless others.

We have to stop thinking the “media” is going to do the right thing.

They only exists to make money now. Education and keeping people in the know is not their primary goal anymore.

They are now just entertainment and they do what entertainment people do, they give you “stuff” that keeps you engaged. If that is by lying or misleading and yet it brings eyes, clicks and views then they are successful.

We are down to finding those few internet sites, magazines, newspapers and TV shows that still try. But overall, the “media” sucks.

If they can make billions turning this country into The Worst Nation in the World they’d go with it.

How Facebook, Google and Twitter ‘embeds’ helped Trump in 2016 (more at Politico):

Facebook, Twitter and Google played a far deeper role in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign than has previously been disclosed, with company employees taking on the kind of political strategizing that campaigns typically entrust to their own staff or paid consultants, according to a soon-to-be released study.

The peer-reviewed paper, based on more than a dozen interviews with both tech company staffers who worked inside several 2016 presidential campaigns and campaign officials, sheds new light on Silicon Valley’s assistance to Trump before his surprise win last November.

Notice how they never care about the other debts they’re leaving their grandkids. A worsened climate, lessened rights, a culture of fear, lowered educational standards, minimized curiosity, and a strain of anti-intellectualism that will leave them stupider and less knowledgeable than the rest of the first world, all for the sake of tax cuts and deficit voodoo that they’ll never benefit from themselves unless they’re already trust fund children.

absolutely

the thinking behind all this, like the current round of tax cuts is the same as saying i dont want to pay for insurance now because “i dont need it, im healthy”

short term thinking on long term issues

governments almost by definition cant raise and save money - segregate / escrow it and not touch it for later use - its unheard of

so its always reactionary to events - witness the hurricanes this year. whoda thought building up balances over the last 10 years might have been a good idea instead of blowing up one year’s budget

and its gonna be the same when the things you mentioned come calling and bite the future in the ass

A Coordinated Attack on the FBI Has Begun

I’ve been suggesting that what we are witnessing over the last week is a planned and coordinated attempt to discredit the Mueller investigation. It all started last Wednesday when Rep. Devin Nunes forced Fusion GPS (the firm that hired Christopher Steele) to publicly plead the fifth in front of the House Intelligence Committee. That was followed the next day by this tweet from Trump: Workers of firm involved with the discredited and Fake Dossier take the 5th. Who paid for it, Russia, the FBI or the Dems (or all)?

At the time, no one was talking about who paid for the Steele dossier because since last October, we’ve known that it was initially commissioned by Republicans and then taken over by Democrats. This week the Washington Post reported on the Democrats involved, but didn’t name the Republicans. (Your balanced media at work)

In the tweet above, the president basically insinuated that the FBI had colluded with the Russians and the Democrats to produce the dossier, and so I’ve suggested that it is very likely that they will be the next target. Take a look at how that was affirmed when Tucker Carlson interviewed Rep. Nunes (who has reversed his recusal from the Russia investigation) last night.

Their conversation focused completely on the role of the FBI with the Steele dossier, and is loaded with distortions and lies. Carlson even went so far as to ask, “So is there anything more terrifying than the prospect of an armed rogue agency?” Think about that. An interviewer refers to the FBI as “an armed rogue agency” and a member of Congress simply nods in agreement. Apparently the long knives have come out.

While everyone on twitter’s busy yacking about the World Series or Joe Giuardi being out as Yankees manager, the GOP just passed the most craven budget in decades.

They’ve basically enabled a massive redistribution of wealth from everyone in the US to the richest of Americans, all by gutting Medicare and Medicaid to the tune of $1.5 trillion over a decade. There’s another $1.5 trillion in new debt added, that isn’t offset anywhere.

What does anyone gain by this? The estate tax gets repealed in the “bargain”.

Trump’s spawn make out like bandits. And the middle class is left holding the bag, and the poor are fucked.

Ronald Reagan’s son sees Donald Trump as a threat to the Republic and says he should be removed.

(Never mind that Ronald Reagan helped put us on this crazy train, and today’s GOP isn’t even close to Reagan any more.)

The son of former President Ronald Reagan is calling on lawmakers to remove President Donald Trump from office either via impeachment or by taking action under the 25th Amendment.

“Donald Trump is a deeply damaged human being. He is a sociopathic, malignant narcissist,” Ron Reagan told Chris Matthews on MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Wednesday.

Reagan ― a liberal commentator for the cable network and a frequent critic of the president ― blamed the electoral system rather than the voters for Trump taking office.

“The Electoral College has sort of vomited this thing up and it landed in the Oval Office, and it needs to be removed. It’s a stain. It’s a big glob on the carpet there. It needs to be removed. And that means impeachment or the 25th Amendment,” Reagan said. “This man is a danger to the world.”

The wingnut press can’t quite yet decide whether they want to accuse the FBI of being too stupid to recognize a Russian psy-op or that they actively participated in one to get Hillary Clinton elected to the presidency. But they’re generally agreed that this totally discredits Mueller’s investigation and the DOJ has a duty to fire him, end the “witch hunt,” and commence the years-long investigations into the evils of the “Clinton Crime Family.”

Mueller is going to present some evidence that the GOP cannot just brush off or ignore as they have with every other incident of conflict of interest, collusion or interfering with an ongoing investigation.

The only option they have would be to discredit the source of the allegations.

And if that fails then just start a war somewhere.

Right, at this point the evidence has grown so conclusive that there was some level of collusion between the Russian gov’t and the Trump campaign (directly or indirectly) that the GOP knows Mueller’s final report will be impossible to just drop down a bottomless pit.

So the only option at this point is to destroy Mueller’s credibility before he ever issues that report, with the possible hope of creating just enough of a cover for Trump firing him.

I suspect that the big worry among the GOP leadership is that even if the indictments are limited to Trump and his cronies, the same report will condemn the party for knowing or strongly believing that Trump was engaged in illegal efforts to undermine the Clinton campaign and did nothing to address it. That they were so desperate to push him across the finish line that they turned a blind eye to illegal acts on the argument that winning was the only thing that mattered.

I just imagine Obama giving Trump’s speeches, using his rhetoric, and having the kind of personal background that Trump did and seeing the RR’s right. Yeah, I’m sure the RR would have just loved a black Democrat with five kids by three women who talked about grabbing women by the pussy. They’re moral hypocrites. Then again, they’ve always been.

Thought, after further contemplation, I believe the bigger worry among the GOP leadership is where Mueller’s obstruction of justice investigation will lead. Because they might have been able to plead ignorance, possibly even salvage Mike Pence’s political future by placing all the blame for the Russian collusion on the Trumps. But it looks more and more like the White House inner circle were in up to their eyeballs in an effort to cover-up those illegal acts. Worse, members of Congress (both serving and since joined the administration) were involved in the cover-up as well, whether as active collaborators or as bagmen for such. Their worst nightmare is Mueller’s report laying out a list of indictments that effectively hollows out the White House and names prominent members of the party.

Unfortunately, yes, Third Way has a great deal of influence, as they shape the thinking of the Donor Class for the Democratic Party. Policy flows where the money goes.

If the donors are convinced that there is no real problem with their underlying assumptions that Americans, given a chance, will choose their tepid wishywashy solutions, they will continue to fund candidates who have these as their policy speeches.

And voters will continue to pull the handle for anyone who sounds different, even if that person is batshit cray-cray.

Letter | Gosar Siblings Do Not Support Rep. Paul Gosar’s Statements on George Soros (Goes to the Kingman, Ariz. Daily Miner), more at the link.

An op-ed penned by seven of Rep. Gosar’s siblings disavow his statements about George Soros funding the havoc in Charlottesville, Va.

We watched the interview of Paul Gosar on Vice News and believe Paul owes George Soros a personal apology.

This is a matter of right and wrong, not politics. We are aghast that Paul has sunk so low that he now spews the most despicable slander against an 87-year-old man without a shred of proof, and then doesn’t even have the guts or decency to apologize?

Our parents are 87 and 83 and we would be outraged if some sleaze did to them what Paul shamelessly did to Mr. Soros. First, Paul confabulated horrendous lies about Soros as a young boy who survived the Holocaust, and followed it with invented notions that Soros was behind the Charlottesville Nazis. Paul’s deceit was uttered without a shred of evidence.

Those aren’t our family values or the values of the small Wyoming town we grew up in. Character assassination wasn’t revered. Lies and distortions do reveal much about the character of the congressman of Arizona’s 4th congressional district, however.

There’s always going to be money and power in drugs (and alcohol), there always has been. Hell, there’s an argument that the first permanent human settlements developed because man figured out how to make beer. There is, was, and always will be a demand for it and no policy you create will be able to stop that demand. The only thing we can do is smartly regulate the market and make sure that there are treatment options for those who deal with addiction issues.

The only times I’ve had Fentanyl were after hand surgeries for Dupuytren’s Contractures (four in all). (Hand surgery is amazingly excruciating - each time I got the Fentanyl after morphine failed.)

My last surgery was in June. I still have the majority of the opiates they sent me home with (as occasionally my left hand still causes great pain because the surgical incision hasn’t fully healed yet, I ripped it open in my car wreck, and my hand is still swollen).

No, I absolutely am not kidding. It is based in Dipping Springs, Texas. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that this is a Republican PAC.

And here’s a fun fact. The Designated Agent for this PAC is Stephen James Curran and, according to official state records, he’s 56 years old. Maybe he’s “young” at heart, I dunno. He votes in Republican primaries.

However, the treasurer, Emily Michelle Curran, is not a registered voter in Texas.

exactly.

“Education” isn’t solely the province of university/college graduates and it irks me to no end to hear humble bragging by those who never got a degree.

I am the ONLY person in my family to ever get a college degree (two degrees, in fact). Now one of our granddaughters is a freshman at Thomas More studying nursing. We could not be prouder, even if she had chosen another path after high school.

MrBWS is a high school grad. No college. But he is a journeyman lineman making more money than I ever dreamed I could make as a professional journalist with my two university degrees (OTOH, I *do* have certain ethical standards that prevent me for going for the big journalism bucks…also I never had the physical assets that are generally sought after in that field.)

My siblings all followed different paths after high school and most make a good living in their chosen fields.

So I really cringe whenever I hear “I only have a high school education, so what do I know?”

If you haven’t learned a damned thing after high school graduation, well, that’s just sad, but don’t blame it on high school.

Mr. w read a lot in the Navy, which he had joined because nobody even considered college as a place he could go. When he got out, he always hung around with college students or graduates. When he was dating the daughter of a Stanford prof, he applied to a college. They had him take the SAT. They accused him of either lying about never having taken it before, or cheating. He chose not to go to that college. He went when he was in his 60s. Man, did that school ever learn a lot. He quit when he felt like it, so close to a degree that meant nothing to him.

Mr. w read a lot in the Navy, which he had joined because nobody even considered college as a place he could go.

I hope we finish the book before yours comes out.

Reminds me of a street person who used to hang out nearby. We called her the Paragraph Lady. She’d set up 3’x4’ signs completely covered in lettering about 4” tall, right along El Camino. Totally impossible to read - and that was before she decided that silver letters on white paper would be better.

It’s some kind of shared impulse.

I’ve been a NWS service volunteer for going on about 40 years now.
The volunteers are really the backbone for NWS forecasts because we are the actual eyes on the ground to confirm what is being seen on satellite and radar.
I would encourage everyone to google NWS volunteer or NWS spotter training. It’s a lot of fun and hugely fascinating. And it doesn’t take a huge time commitment.

My cousin is a weather spotter for the NWS.

She was at her child’s high school graduation a couple years ago, and someone came barrelling into the middle of the graduation to yell there was a tornado in the school’s cornfield right behind the school. Everyone scrambled for cover. She later complained to me she didn’t get to see it.

re: #473 Anymouse 🌹

I’m not humblebragging about not going to college. I wish I’d been able to. I am the first person in my family in several generations that could not go to college (lack of money).

My chosen path to get to go to college was my military benefits. Those were snatched away from me when I became disabled and the VA declared me “unemployable” over epilepsy. (Fun fact: You lose your college benefits if that declaration is made.)

What little I know I had to learn on my own.

The one thing I was very appreciative of the nuns at my old Catholic school was they taught us to like to learn. Sure, they were classic strict nuns and disciplinarians, but that really was a part of the education. That and not taking “I can’t do it” for any kind of an answer. The passion many of them had for their subjects was obvious.

It all made for an education you didn’t understand until you were out of high school. And most of the folks I went to school with did well in their lives, many further educated and a lot of them say our grade and high school made college easier.

It was truly a college prep school.

Even for an artist like me. I aced all my college art history classes because I already knew 75% of the course from the nun that taught art in high school.

Oh dear! Turns out there is surveillance video from a nearby house.

$20 Million Lawsuit Filed Against Lubbock PD for Officer-Involved Shooting

A federal civil rights lawsuit was filed Wednesday against Lubbock Police for allegations of excessive force. A document filed with the lawsuit said the demand is for $20 million.

The lawsuit said officer Billy Mitchell confronted Paul Anthony Valderas, 31, of Lubbock on January 26. Valderas was the subject of multiple narcotis investigations. A police report listed the location as the 3300 block of Grinnell Street and Valderas had been spotted at a nearby convenience store. Officers set up a perimeter and decided to move in.

The report said Valderas “produced a handgun and was shot by one of the investigators.”

The lawsuit paints a different picture.

“Surveillance video from a nearby home later emerged,” the lawsuit said. “The audio and video showed Mitchell did not properly identify himself as a police officer.”

The lawsuit said Valderas had been armed but disarmed himself prior to the shooting.

It said, “When Mr. Valderas realized Mitchell was a cop, Mr. Valderas very clearly disarmed himself by placing the gun in a nearby vehicle—inaccessible to his person.”

The suit also alleges that other officers do NOT support Mitchell’s version of events.

More news from Lubbock, the vanguard of conservative America.

Social Media in Lubbock Raises Issue of White Supremacy Because of Poster
“Social media?” Headline trivializes the reaction. Actually it was the chair of the local Democratic Party who raised it ON social media.

The Chair of the Lubbock County Democratic Party, Stuart Williams, posted an image on social media Tuesday evening and said people locally should be aware of “white supremacy.”

Williams was harshly critical of what he saw.

The image depicted a poster of Uncle Sam and the caption said, “I want you to love who you are. Don’t apologize for being white.”

“Spotted at Holden Hall at Texas Tech University,” Williams said on a Facebook group for Lubbock Democrats. Williams was harshly critical.

New Graduation Requirement: Patriotism
College of the Ozarks president calls new required course “a balance against a pervasive negative view of America.”

Quick quiz: Where is Omaha Beach?
If your answer was Normandy, France, the site of the D-Day landings, you’re correct. But Jerry Davis is worried that kids these days might wager Nebraska.
That’s why the College of the Ozarks, where Davis is president, has launched a new required course for freshmen — dubbed Patriotic Education and Fitness — to combat what he sees as rising anti-American, antipatriotic sentiments in American culture that have been “bubbling for many years.” How much that is true versus how much that is his perception is certainly up for debate, but given that one of the college’s five pillars is “patriotic education,” the course certainly fits the culture of the Christian liberal arts college.

The college held a media day for local outlets in Point Lookout, Mo., Monday to show off the new four-credit course, which was piloted both semesters last year and debuted in earnest as a requirement for freshmen this semester. At the media day, a formation of students marched through campus and stood at attention as Davis addressed them. Terrence Dake, a Board of Trustees member and retired Marine general, told them to stand at ease before continuing with another address.
Speaking by phone with Inside Higher Ed Wednesday, Davis had criticisms of the younger generation but said the course — which combines elements from ROTC programming, physical education courses and the college’s patriotic education pillar — was about building a positive citizenry.

Insys Therapeutics Inc. founder John Kapoor is accused of helping fuel the U.S. opioid epidemic by bribing doctors to prescribe a powerful form of fentanyl to patients who didn’t need the potent drug.

Kapoor, 74, was arrested Thursday in Arizona and charged with racketeering conspiracy and other felonies. He’s scheduled to appear in a Phoenix court later in the day.

Kapoor and other former Insys executives are also accused of defrauding insurance companies that were reluctant to approve payments for the drug by improperly getting prior authorization directly from the insurers and pharmacy benefit managers, Acting U.S. Attorney William Weinreb in Boston said in a press release.

Trump Donor Shoots Two Homeless Men — Then Kills Their Attorney After Losing Lawsuit

A Missouri man is being sought in connection with the murder of an attorney in Kansas City, MO who had successfully argued a previous shooting case against him.

The suspect, David Jungerman, is a Trump donor.

Jungerman is believed to have shot and killed Tom Pickert, a 39-year old personal injury attorney who won a civil suit against him on behalf of homeless men shot by Jungerman.

Pickert was found dead outside of his home in Kansas City’s Brookside neighborhood by his wife, who was also home at the time. Pickert was sitting on his porch after walking his children home from school when he was murdered. Witnesses said a white 1997 Chevrolet van registered to Jungerman had fled the scene. It was found abandoned on Wednesday afternoon.

And why is he now pushing someone for Mayor of Atlanta who is tied for 3rd place, 19 points behind the leader? I understand quid-pro-quos (quids-pro-quo? quid-pro-quo’s? Help me out here, grammarists) but that’s just pissing away whatever credibility he has left.

Well the guy supported him. That usually seems to be Bernie’s rule for who gets his support. Meanwhile Hillary, despite the myth of her being vindictive, her running mate, Senator Kaine was actually the second governor in the country to endorse Obama back in 2008.

That’s good. I feel so awful for that lawyer and his family. Reminds of that guy Lowtax Looper who after losing an election shot and killed his opponent.

This is really a twofer for Trump. He gets to simultaneously claim he’s not standing impeding the Pentagon in fighting the war(s), AND when something goes wrong he gets to point fingers.

Of course, that’s not how management works. If you give your underlings the authority to make decisions, all the decisions they make are STILL your responsibility.

In the military it is continually pointed out that you cannot give someone responsibility without also giving them authority.

Trump is really good at delegating the responsibility part, not so good at delegating the authority part. (If someone below you does well, you give them the credit. If things go haywire, you take responsibility.)

Yep, I remember seeing the story on American Justice with Bill Kurtis back in the day.

The campaign following the murder

Tennessee state law required that the name of a candidate who died before the election be removed from the ballot, and it did not allow the candidate’s party to replace a deceased candidate who died within 30 days of the election.[10] Accordingly, after Burks’ death, Looper became the only candidate listed on the official ballot for Burks’ senate seat.[11] This may have been Looper’s intention.

Several people tried to have Looper’s name stricken from the ballot, claiming that Looper’s arrest constituted moral turpitude. The state Republican Party distanced itself from Looper. To prevent Looper from winning the state senate seat on a technicality, Burks’ widow, Charlotte was put forth as a write-in candidate for her husband’s seat. Dozens of volunteers helped her campaign, including some Republicans. On election day, Charlotte Burks (D), as a write-in candidate, won the seat with 30,252 votes against Looper’s 1,531 votes. One of her first initiatives as state senator was to introduce legislation to ensure that the name of any candidate who dies within 40 days of an election could remain on the ballot, thus preventing the situation that occurred after her husband’s death. Charlotte Burks remained on the state senate until retiring after the 2014 election; she won re-election in 2002, 2006, and 2010.

David Stockman has been saying the Republican Trickle Down Theory he sold for St Ronald was bullshit for at least 7 or 8 years now.

Funny. He was the hero architect of it all. A mastermind.

Now that he calls it what it is, they don’t know who he is and even moreso what he is even talking about.

And get this-he’s using the Internet and Google Ad money as some form of redemption.

Some of us who have seen Fire and Rain know exactly what controls David Stockman:
