This Actually Happened: At Event Honoring Native American Veterans, Trump Suddenly Starts Ranting, Calling Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas”

Days without embarrassing America: 0

Today, at an event honoring Native American veterans (“code talkers”), our addled Bigot in Chief suddenly started rambling about Elizabeth Warren, and right in front of the veterans, called her “Pocahontas.”

Seriously, what the hell is WRONG with this guy?

There may be no bottom for this guy, no line he won’t cross, no deplorable behavior he won’t indulge. Not when he thinks Fox News, talk radio, and his deluded band of MAGAbots will stand by him no matter what.

What exactly is the story behind Warren’s apparent heritage? Wikipedia seems to suggest that she and her siblings say that growing up their mom and grandmother would talk about their ancestry being Cherokee and Delaware. But apparently it’s not clear if they actually are or if it was more of a family myth? Is that, more or less, the sum of it?

And the Trump angle is just that he’s being an asshole because:

Dennis Green “They are what we thought they were, and we let them off the hook!”

I read a bit about it when this all first came out. It’s one of those ‘family history’ things - ‘Your great-grandpa had some Cherokee blood!’ - that probably trace back to some remark somebody made some time about his high cheekbones or something. Warren is from Oklahoma, and apparently it’s really common in OK for people to claim/believe that they have a little Native American ancestry.

I think the story was that she’d entered/mentioned it on some form or other at Harvard, and the Right blew it up into Warren claiming Native American ancestry to get the job because of Affirmative Action, which Harvard categorically denied.

So for the right, it’s a two-fer. Warren ‘lied’ AND she only got her job because of that awful Affirmative Action thing that’s taking jobs away from deserving white men!

You do have to choose your audience carefully, though.

I saw this the other day:

Charles M. Blow

@CharlesMBlow
If u support Trump, we don’t have anything to talk abt & we can’t be friends. This isn’t abt parties or ideology; This is abt right & wrong

Lots of people responded with something like ‘It’s a shame people can’t have honest disagreements over politics without anymore’. I think a lot of people really don’t get that how terrible Trump is. We’re not talking about “You support supply side economics so we can’t be friends”. This is more like, “You’re either a racist or you’re okay with racism, so we can’t be friends.”

principled opponents are welcome when politics is a clash of value systems, each of which is in some way valid; a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world differently.

when it becomes, not even a conflict of interests, but instead a tribal, degenerative, brutal struggle for office in which one side with righteous indignation believes only the other is and can be capable of behaving despicably while they themselves, pure, run roughshod over it all, well then fuck ‘em, and without mercy

Right. What is the compromise with people who don’t think you deserve equality? I mean, it’s like suggesting the German Jews should have compromised with the Nazis, like by agreeing to all move into camps as long as the Nazis didn’t try to kill all of them.

Depending on how close the race is, a vote for a third party candidate can be as good as a vote for Jones. If it’s 50-50, then there isn’t much of a difference between 51-49 and 49-47-4.

During a phone interview for a professional directory blurb when she was a professor they asked her if she had any interesting personal info she would like to include. she answered “She answered that one of her grandmothers was part Native American and she was very proud of that” They included that in her bio. The End.

She did not include a long form birth certificate proving 1/16th or 1/32nd Native American ancestry which makes her a pretend Indian exploiting Harvard’s one drop Native American affirmative action for hiring law professors policy that doesn’t exist. Also, cons are full of shit assholes.

We know racism and misogyny are real. We know that there are racists and misogynists in the media too. They help shape what we see and hear in the news media - picking the stories, writing the headlines, etc.

They continue to give Trump carte blanche on his racism and bigotry.

re: #91 Belafon

GOTV is going to be the most important thing we do next year. I donate to the ACLU and SPLC for these reasons. If a good voter registration effort here in Texas gets started, I will donate to it as well. These orgs are going to be as important as getting candidates and getting them funding.

Cruz’s Democratic challenger officially files for Senate

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) has officially filed to challenge Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in 2018.

O’Rourke, who has served in Congress since 2013, announced in late March that he would take on Cruz next year. It’ll be an uphill battle for O’Rourke, since no Democrat has won a Senate election in Texas since 1988.

“Today’s filing is not only a chance to recommit ourselves to this critical race, but to recommit to running it in the right way: being present, accountable, candid, transparent and powering each step of the way by people not PACs,” O’Rourke said on Monday.

Not to get all divisive and stuff, but I have a problem with the use of the word ‘tribal’ as meaning something bad. What you’re talking about might actually be bad, but at the same time, using that word for it could be bad.

I’m going to go make a bike out of pieces of bike.

Sorry if I’ve given offence but when I use ‘tribe’ to describe the aristocrats and barbarians masquerading as conservatives I’m using that term to note their behaviour, which is similar to that people in large pre-national groups.

They are tied together not by a shared ethical standard but by a common faith standard. They usually call it ‘Christianity’ or ‘capitalism’ but the faith is actually in America. Which in this case is a holy land and not a nation in the modern sense.

‘Tribes in such circumstances are highly defensive in nature. Pretty much everything outside the tribe is a danger, and everything outside the tribe must be brought under control of the tribe…or destroyed. It’s the only way to be safe.

Such peoples tend to be much less individualistic than modern people. When asked “Who are you?” they will reply, “I am a member of my tribe,” before anything else. Orders from chieftains are often substituted for thought.

That doesn’t mean tribes are bad. They are a useful survival mechanism for people who live closer to nature than we do.

To more advanced civilizations tribes, internally or externally, are a danger as tribes regard advanced civilizations as a threat, and also as easy victims.

I do not take offense to any usage of the words ‘tribe’ or ‘tribal’. I only note that there are negative connotations which may or may not be intended, but can be taken as negative by those people who are part of what we call tribes. The social settings precede the words used to describe them, and there are so many of them with such a vast array of histories, I just do not want to see any person in any tribe reduced to a representation for a generality.

I enjoy reading your posts, for the most part. You are a person who puts thought into comments, and I usually agree with those thoughts.

Dunning-Kruger effect. They moved into the big league when they decided to go after regular WaPo reporters and they got their asses handed to them. The average WaPo reporter probably has 30 or 40 IQ points on the typical O’Keefe dupe, yet the latter never imagine that they might be outclassed. O’Keefe and his idiots have only the advantages of operating without any known standard of ethics, of appealing to an exceptionally gullible audience, and of having plenty of money. To RWNJ grifters, those things are the keys to success in every endeavor, they have no idea that they aren’t always enough.
