Americans are just dumb. Our county tried to educate kids about religions beyond Christianity and parents lost their fucking minds so the school system pulled the curriculum. Then they tried basic yoga and just mindfulness for a short time each day to help kids focus and de-stress, same thing. No wonder we’re dumb and raising dumb kids. This reactionary shit is killing us.

Went to urgent care and they wouldn’t see me. My case wasn’t dire enough. Apparently my city is experiencing a huge flu epidemic. Anywho, I went to the smaller hospital’s emergency room and waited and waited and waited and then dude finally got a hold of my dentist who faxed a prescription to our pharmacy. So I didn’t have to hang out at emergency anymore.
So I have big bomber antibiotics to kill this fucking infection. Whole right side of my face is swollen. Tooth pain is really quite impressive. Hoping the antibiotic takes hold quickly and the swelling goes down.
Really sweet way to usher in the new year. Tooth is going to go hopefully sometime early next week. Yea me.

I strongly suspect that Trump will attempt to find some way to directly assist the protestors for one simple reason: He won’t want to be seen as “failing” like wingnuts insist Obama did by not overtly supporting the ‘09 protests. And I’ll go further to say that I believe he’ll try to intervene by threatening to clamp down with new/stronger sanctions if the Mullahs don’t knuckle under, which will undermine the entire point of the protests.

Perhaps I’m missing things by not watching the news right now, but does it seem like the wingnuts are hoping that these Iranian protests grant them a mulligan on 2009. That “this time,” Trump will intervene on the side of the protestors, the Mullahs will be brought down, and Iran will return to being our bit…er, our “ally.”
I hope you’re wrong about that. The U.S. needs to stay out of this and let Iranians work out their internal issues by themselves. I don’t recall the U.S. intervening with troops in South Africa during the apartheid years or in Rwanda during the genocide.

I lived a long walk away, on 75th and 77th. It was an extremely critical part of growing up.
What is astonishing to me is how few people, when talking about Iran, understand that it is entirely possible - even likely - that a popular revolution against a repressive regime will end up creating another repressive regime.
Tsarist Russia was a terrible place. The USSR that replaced it? Terrible place.

My aunt was in her late 60’s when her husband died…great guy but ?? She could not get to the store for groceries as children were grown and gone and had to learn how to write a check to pay utilities. She learned to drive and eventually did her own taxes. She lived to 102 having an active life that included annual cruises.

Also, with regard to people not having heard of the ‘53 Iranian coup-I live in what was as of a couple years ago, apparently the most educated town in California (excluding incorporated University towns like Stanford.) According to Business Insider, anyway. Our book club read All the Shah’s Men by Stephan Kinzer last year and I was shocked at the number of people who hadn’t heard of the coup. I won’t claim I was an expert on it, but I had heard of it.

I got to see many of the films in that Criterion release when I was an undergrad at Pitt. If they weren’t shown on campus there was a fine arts theater called the Guild that screened them. There are two films not included in that collection that bring back very bittersweet memories for me—King of Hearts and Harold and Maude. My best friend from college loved those two and he saw them over and over again with me.
He died from an undiagnosed brain aneurysm in March 1997 less than a month after my Mother passed on. I can’t bear to watch either film without thinking of Jim…

I used to be a big fan of flying. Two 13+-hour flights across the Atlantic (one of them under the influence of the stomach flu) later, and I’ll take a hard pass. Hell, I’d sail on the Titanic before I get on another A380.

I’d rather fly than do a transatlantic boat rip TBH. But I don’t blame you. Long flights are exhausting. My brother had two long layovers on his latest trip. L love traveling. I just hate flights heh. I don’t mind the airport itself even if the food is always meh.

Back-to-back-to-back flights of 4 hours, 13 hours, 4 hours really just did me in. 22 hours is a long time to be in the air, and the layovers didn’t really do me any favors. Although I must say that the airport in Dubai is a fantastic place to be laid up for a few hours.

It’s easier to do horror as a short story. Short formats keep things focused, without the wandering and tangents you might get in a novel. There are plenty of great horror novels, but a good horror short is often damn good. :)

A video script that’s due Tuesday (that I haven’t started yet) and a direct mail campaign that I have to figure out how to reach specific demos in the eastern part of San Bernardino County. Can’t work up the energy to get either one done.

Now you’ve got me trying to think of other story collections worth recommending. Some of Lovecraft’s old stuff is good (and some is problematic). Ramsey Campbell often does great horror short stories. I love M.R. James, but his stuff is super-old and maybe an acquired taste.
I think the best anthology editor is Ellen Datlow. I nearly never see a bad anthology that she’s put together. Any of her “Best Horror Stories of the Year” collections are guaranteed to be filled with show-stoppers.
