Ferrell was pretty good last night. He can be funny and then you begin to wonder if he is being serious and he is just messing with you. The one skit they did with the three airline attendants was pretty edgy. I was thinking of Lizard discussions watching it.
Some might not find this amusing. Touches on death and religion in uncomfortable ways. Which also makes the topics ripe for some dark comedy.

The little bits of local programming that I watch on TV, has ads about chain migration. Everyday. All the smarmy “local” news anchors (local as in they reside in the racist ring communities surrounding the city proper) belch the words out as if they were taught to say it as toddlers. Total and complete brainwashing.
If this continues, citizenship will be defined as a privilege. The conservative majority will strive to ensure that undesirable populations will have to battle to keep citizenship.
brought up from downstairs:
I give people a hard time about ethnicity sometimes. When I have to listen to how “proud” someone is of being “German” or “Irish” or whatever. I’m like motherfucker, you ain’t even met your great great grandparents that came here from there, so how the fuck can you be proud of being Irish? If Germany was so great, why the fuck did your ancestors come here? Heh.

Now y’all are reminding me of the horror novel Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix. It’s set in a haunted Ikea knockoff. The cover looks like an Ikea catalog, and most of the chapters start with a Ikea-style picture and description of some piece of furniture. About the time everything goes almost literally straight to hell for the protagonists, the chapter headings turn into descriptions of torture devices, like so:
Not the perfect novel — it got into torture porn more than I prefer — but I remember it giving me several sleepless nights while I was reading it… :)

Since retiring from a career in opera, David Cornell has billed himself as a “basso ridiculoso” and accompanies himself on concertina for fun and pleasure, as well as occasional public appearances in the US and UK. He sings humorous songs with a straight face and is one of the funniest performers I’ve ever heard. Arnold
Music: Ken Galipeau
Lyrics: Les Barker
Arnold was an armadillo, in oh so in need of romance
That is chanced one Saturday evening Arnold went out to a dance.
The moment he walked in the room, he saw her as if he had known
She’d be there by the side of the stage, all he wanted, all in black, all alone.
She was there she was his dress to kill-o
If only his glasses where cleaner.
He was an armadillo she was a concertina.
He struggled to make conversation, he leap frogged from topic to topic
If only she’d say something back, if only he wasn’t myopic
Bright silver buttons in rows, from head down to toes in black leather
Could this beauty love him here goes, poor Arnold thought its now or never.
He could picture her head on his pillow
He loved her the moment he’d seen her
He was an armadillo she was a concertina.
You can’t help but feel for the lad-o, how happy poor Arnold would be
If he could make love in the shadows and no one but no one could see.
Alas what he thought might have been-o, a sweet secret was soured completely
Sex with a concertina is rarely accomplished discreetly.
The dancer stopped stripping the willow
Oh what a loud misdemeanor
He was an armadillo she was a concertina.
Picture love as a kind of concerto, poor Arnold his first was unfinished.
What let everyone who was there know, was a very loud C sharp diminished
Somebody said “Hey look its Arnold”, and he ran from their scorn and their laughter
Into the darkness outside and never returned ever after.
Tales of lost love and dreams unfulfill-o
Cruel cupid you’ve never been meaner.
He was an armadillo she was a concertina.
He was an armadillo she was a concertina.

re: #83 Anymouse 🌹
When I was stationed in Virginia Beach in the Eighties, cities in the area were still fighting school desegregation.
Integration completely altered the development pattern in Lubbock. This is easy to track because the street grid is so regular, laid out after the widespread adoption of automobiles, and because the city grew so fast between 1940 and 1970 (from 30,000 to 180,000 in that time).
During the immediate post war boom, the expansion was toward the southeast. By 1953, it had reached 66th street on the east side (numbers increase toward the south) while on the west side, construction had only reached 39th street. Buddy Holly and his family lived on east 63rd street, for example. The black neighborhoods were on the east side as well, but they were rigidly segregated as were the schools.
In the late 60s, court ordered desegregation brought the southeastward development trend to a screeching halt. White families fled en masse. A brand new, gigantic suburban shopping center on the southeast side closed down after just a couple of years and was converted to warehouse space. Development switched to the southwest, fueled by recovery assistance and insurance money from the 1970 tornado. It continues to this day and has now reached 160th street. Meanwhile, 66th street is still the effective edge of town on the east side.

He’s struggling right now and if just one of these people would respond and offer up words of encouragement, or even send something as simple a guitar pick his way, it would mean SO much to him. But I have no idea what the most effective way to contact anyone would be. Via an agent or manager? Record company? Something else? Or is this an effort in futility? The Kid’s birthday is in March, but the timeline is less important than someone actually responding. Any ideas?

But they would not confirm local reports that the target of the raiders was not physical property but the man’s stock of the cryptocurrency. “
Try to convince me this doesn’t involve SGT Hathaway trying to explain to Inspector Lewis what ‘bitcoin’ is.

OK, this is probably a dumb question, but what the hell.
I am trying to figure out, even though I know the chances are slim, how to contact musicians/bands that have helped my son get through some shit in his life. Any ideas?

A few years later, Nazis, Fascists, and Japanese militarists everywhere were delighted with this upstanding group:
America First Committee
The America First Committee (AFC) was the foremost United States non-interventionist pressure group against the American entry into World War II. It was also characterized by anti-semitic and pro-fascist rhetoric. Started on September 4, 1940, it was dissolved on December 10, 1941, three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor had brought the war to America. Membership peaked at 800,000 paying members in 450 chapters. It was one of the largest anti-war organizations in American history

I am part of an earlier generation. After Sputnik, while I was still in grammar school, our parents were inundated with articles about how Johnny can’t read and Johnny can’t do math. In the 1960’s we had the much maligned (deservedly so) new math that negatively impacted the students in those years. I don’t know that our education system has declined over the years so much as our competitors have improved their teaching. And now, of course, we have ignoramuses like Betsy deVos trying to destroy it for everyone.

I graduated from high school in 1967. I mentioned parents because the isolationists were understandably portrayed pretty negatively in the education system in those days. For “America First” to have the positive historical association the right seeks to exploit, there would have to be some kind of racist or Bircher indoctrination to offset that in a young person’s life. That was actually very common at the time but it was usually below the mass media horizon.
In many respects, the John Birch Society was a revival and continuation of the America First Committee. It is stronger and more open now than it has ever been, and its depraved vision is being mainstreamed one school at a time. I know of a a high school in Texas that routinely allows local Birchers to come in and lecture students on the Bircher version of history and the Constitution.

You reminded me of the famous Milgram studies. They were a series of studies by Yale psychologist Stanley Milgram.
“They measured the willingness of study participants, men from a diverse range of occupations with varying levels of education, to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience. Participants were led to believe that they were assisting an unrelated experiment, in which they had to administer electric shocks to a “learner”. These fake electric shocks gradually increased to levels that would have been fatal had they been real.”

Hey, don’t be dissing Supertrain; what what I’ve learned and seen of it, they actually had pretty high production values (at least in the beginning), which is mostly what doomed the show and almost killed NBC. - A lot of empty promises to “fix” the very problems he created/made worse in the past year
- A lot of talking about vaporware proposals that pundits will waste ink fantasizing about, such as that infrastructure promise that he touched once last year and then immediately abandoned
- A lot of insults aimed at the DNC for not slavishly falling at his feet, which (again) the media will argue should be overlooked in order to sign onto those same vaporware proposals
- And ending on a “America owes me big time” note as though we’re supposed to believe he’s had any positive impact on the nation in the past year.

Well, I still remember how the Birchers in Pennsylvania went nuclear when the Supreme Court ruled school prayer unconstitutional. That’s the point that the Birchers and Religious nuts started running for school boards and dumbing down the curriculum.
Our schools set aside one class period a week to discuss current events based on newspaper articles. There was a very nasty local School Board election where the conservatives got control of the board and fired the superintendent replacing him with a religious activist. Then there were new textbooks that were phased in and the right wing slant was more and more apparent.
The school board had a shift that made football and basketball their #1 priorities and other activities (such as the school Bridge and Chess clubs) were curtailed. My dad always wanted me to get into the debate team, but I found myself blackballed because the Board remembered how my grandparents were the field marshalls organizing the Steelworkers Union.
By my senior year, the brainwashing was complete as the overwhelming majority of kids cast their votes for Nixon in the mock presidential election. Humphrey had won with 3/4 of the votes 4 years previously.

While I think the cellular network and the internet ought to be considered infrastructure that companies compete on, rather than them owning, this will go nowhere. AT&T and Verizon currently own the FCC. They’re not going to give it up.

Military personnel around the world have been publicly sharing their exercise routes online - including those inside or near military bases.
Online fitness tracker Strava has published a “heatmap” showing the paths its users log as they run or cycle.
It appears to show the structure of foreign military bases in countries like Syria and Afghanistan, as soldiers move around inside.
The US military is examining the heatmap, a spokesman said.
Air Force Colonel John Thomas, a spokesman for US Central Command, told the Washington Post that the US military was reviewing the implications. (more)

I was checking out the heat maps in Afghanistan. In more than a few places if you cycle from the map view to the satellite view, there’s nothing there. The bases have blocked from view. There are also a number of linear heat maps, out in the boonies of Afghanistan, that I’m relatively sure no one was out doing PT along. More likely someone left their device during a regular vehicle routs.

re: #212 sagehen
Back in March 2012, I wrote a column describing the “perfect” Republican candidate who was divorced, impregnated his wife before marriage, supported gun control, and opposed anti-gay efforts. Upon revealing the name of Reagan and saying he would have NO CHANCE at getting the nomination, people refused to believe he had taken those positions. The United States of Amnesia indeed.
There are very serious reasons not to trust the Trump administration with this kind of power over the 5G network, despite any possible benefits.
— Charles Johnson (@Green_Footballs) January 29, 2018
In case you haven’t noticed, this administration has very marked tendencies toward authoritarianism. Nationalizing a major cellular network would be a major step in a direction we should NOT take.

I’m not sure that racism is the driving force here. People emphasized Hussein because they thought there was something wrong and inherently negative about it. In Haley’s case, those people bringing up Nikki Haley’s birth name don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, Nikki Haley apparently does.

I have no problem using a person’s preferred name. After all, Romney’s first name isn’t Mitt, Bush’s first name isn’t Jeb, and Gingrich’s first name isn’t Newt. In the past and clearly continuing to current times, many people Americanized their names to help with their careers or acceptance with the public. It certainly has been a widespread practice among actors. There’s enough reason to attack every Republican currently alive, without focusing on these distractions, though it remains sad that Americans would reject a candidate purely because of the implied ethnicity of their name.

We know that? I don’t. Fer instance, my mechanic goes by the name of Bobby, I presume because it’s easier for us to get our mouths around that Bhavesh. Apparently she has gone by the nickname of Nikki all of her life and she was married to a guy named Haley, so that’s her name as changing it is for many, likely still most, the norm for women when they marry.

Exactly. Ms. Haley can call herself whatever she wants. Willard can go by Mitt, and Newton Leroy Gingrich can call himself Kal-El for all I care. At least “Barry” Obama had the guts to put his name on the ballot, no matter the consequences.
