Read the original and the sequel (Killing Time). Great books TR as the Police Commissioner is a great character (Bully!).
Don’t have cable, but look forward to seeing the DVD’s. Great storyteller, is Caleb Carr.

Just watched the parade videos in the previous thread.
Sheesh, 200 years ago marching in formation was how you fought wars. Not today.
A parade with thousands of military in it will require tens of thousands of support folks.
The units will need to stop real training and practice marching. Then they will have to redeploy, do the parade, and then return to their base. At which point they will have to restart whatever they were doing before the parade. All the wear and tear to the units, their personnel, and their equipment will need time and money to fix.
And during this entire time those units and support folks will be unavailable for real missions.
If I were a global trouble maker, I would look at a parade as an excellent time to make that trouble.
I’ve always thought John was one the five or six best living songwriters in the US. He’s been covered by everybody.

It seemed to me that the idiot in the video was an immature male who was looking to attack someone weaker than he and less able to defend herself.
I think that he figured out pretty quickly that she could defend herself verbally and was unafraid. And it seemed to me that he fled pretty quickly upon realizing that.
But yes, my reaction was the same as yours.

I’m a tiny guy, but I would have at least tried if it came to protecting another person. I might get put in the hospital, but rolling over me would allow another to escape.
The problem in Nazi Germany in the Thirties was as the rhetoric and then violence escalated, an awful lot of people sat around and said “it can’t get worse” or “it doesn’t affect me.”
When the chips are down is when the mettle of your courage is actually measured. Considering the massive protest rallies (on behalf of both women and science) occurring in the nation, along with the wannabe fascists running away from their protests, I think that mettle is testing well so far.

I agree, street fights are a real crapshoot. And if you are older than 35, you know you are going to get hurt. It’s just a matter of how badly. The hope is to make the other guy understand that it will not be an easy fight.
Most predators (including our current president) are just looking for easy wins. A good book on this is “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin De Becker.
I also agree that mass movements and mass protests are far more effective. The two women’s marches and the other protests including Boston and even Charlottesville against the fascists, were, to my mind, extremely effective.

So… This happened last week:
(nota bene - I did rearrange the order of the quotes to make a bit more sense of the story.)
“It started Saturday night with a raid and seizure of a marijuana dispensary retail outlet in the Black Creek Dr.-Eglinton Ave. area. Two officers tasked with guarding evidence were later allegedly experiencing dizziness and impairment from something consumed from that stash.”
“One officer was allegedly flying so high, he ended up in a tree.”
“Meanwhile, a female officer was allegedly wandering around in an altered state at great risk to herself and perhaps others, according to a source.”
“[A] third officer — who offered assistance — suffered a head wound while trying to help one of the officers.”

“I can ski the double blacks in Breckenridge.”
“If there’s a mandatory air, even if it was five feet or less, would you jump into the run?”
“I… don’t think so.”
“You’re not in this group, go to the next group to your right.” (actual conversation I heard at Silverton Mountain)

Tumblr was also overrun by Russian trolls, though the company is saying little about it. Those trolls promoted Bernie Sanders whilst denigrating Hillary Clinton.
The article starts (more at the link):
Russian trolls posed as black activists on Tumblr and generated hundreds of thousands of interactions for content that ranged from calling Hillary Clinton a “monster” to supporting Bernie Sanders and decrying racial injustice and police violence in the US, according to new findings from researcher Jonathan Albright and BuzzFeed News.
While Facebook and Twitter continue to face intense public and congressional pressure over the activity from trolls working for the Russian Internet Research Agency, Tumblr has somehow managed to escape scrutiny. But the blogging platform was in fact home to a powerful, largely unrevealed network of Russian trolls focused on black issues and activism.
“The evidence we’ve collected shows a highly engaged and far-reaching Tumblr propaganda-op targeting mostly teenage and twenty-something African Americans. This appears to have been part of an ongoing campaign since early 2015,” said Albright, research director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.

Plus, governments in various parts of the world are trying to put the brakes on people dumping their money into cryptocurrencies, for a variety of reasons, which made a lot of people wonder if the market was going to tank entirely. He’s got a point, just not in the way he thinks.
People go to opiods because safer, less addictive drugs aren’t available, and in weed’s case, treated like an infinitely worse substance than the things literally killing people while pushed by companies feeding the addictions.

We’ve got a mixed bag of precip on tap today.
Trumpworld has the usual shitstorm of ongoing agitprop and misinformation, though it looks like they’ve turned it up to 11.5 today.
For starters, we’ve got a top WH aide who should never have been allowed anywhere near the WH if they did any kind of proper screening. Extreme vetting my ass. This should have been picked up and flagged, but apparently no one seems to think domestic violence and assaults are red flags:

This is their ongoing pattern of deception, obstruction, and conspiracy. https://t.co/i3YyV4AipH— lawhawk (@lawhawk) February 7, 2018
If you thought that was a BS misinformation campaign, you’d be right.
There’s a huge difference between getting information and obstruction of justice by shutting down investigations.
Trumpworld and the right wing echo chamber want to conflate the two. Trump did the latter. The former isn’t criminal, let alone any indication of wrongdoing or interference in ongoing investigations.

1. The IRS was understaffed and basically put together a spreadsheet of words that suggested political activity.

GOP cherry picked from list of organizations that the IRS flagged for scrutiny. GOP complained IRS flagged groups improperly. IRS Inspector General found that political groups were flagged because IRS was concerned they were seeking tax benefit they weren’t entitled to.
IRS indicated that the criteria was incomplete/insufficient; Congress needed to clarify with law (and still hasn’t). IRS therefore has to fill gaps with regulations and guidance.
GOP tries to find a fall guy to blame - besides Obama - attack IRS is their central goal.

What would account for the songs being less good than they used to be?
The mentality of the people making the music. Producers now are ignoring all the musical principles of the previous generations. It’s a joke. That’s not the way it works: You’re supposed to use everything from the past. If you know where you come from, it’s easier to get where you’re going. You need to understand music to touch people and become the soundtrack to their lives. Can I tell you one of the greatest moments in my life?

Lots of quotables for sure. He came off as kind of a hater and bullshitter to me though and I remember specifically using him as example one of the OGs who I admired because he was not that, years ago.
Fun read though.
He had a bit of that “DAMN KIDS GET OFF MAH LAWN!” vibe going there, especially when it came to talking about modern music, but, you know what? He’s Quincy Motherfucking Jones; I’d say he’s earned that right, many times over…and he wasn’t necessarily wrong on some of it either.

Why, when I was a boy, there used to be military parades all the time! Big ones, with long columns of troops marching past the reviewing stand, tanks, armored vehicles, big mobile missile carriers, and flyovers by a gazillion aircraft!
They were in the Soviet Union. We pointed at them and laughed, because you make a ‘show of strength’ when you’re not really strong.

Mucinex is if your nose is stuffed up and the mucus is thick.
If your throat hurts, I live by that spray in your throat Chloroseptic stuff. It freezes your throat.
Standard Robotussin might help with a drippy nose, as would Sudafed (I use PE which doesn’t have psudoepinepherine [sic] as that is bad for your blood pressure) because you want something that dries you, not makes you more drippy.
There’s an easy way to find out who this parade is honoring.
1. Are the service members going to be sitting in the bleachers drinking soft drinks and beer and eating good food while being treated to some world class entertainment
or
2. Are the troops going to be getting drilled so they can march pretty in formations so they can put on a good show for politicians and Trump?

It’s all of a piece with the increasing requirement to make a show of patriotism. We went off and fucking won WWII, defeating Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan at the same time. We mobilized the entire nation to do this. After the initial celebrations, we didn’t have military parades every year. We flew the flag on special occasions. Nobody wore a goddam flag pin on their lapel. This person is an idiot. No, global warming is not all ‘faulty computer modeling’.
1) the absorption spectrum of CO2 in the infrared is an incontrovertible fact. i.e. it traps heat.
2) the amount of CO2 we pump into the atmosphere is known, easily calculated from fossil fuel usage.
3) The increase in CO2 in the atmosphere and the oceans is measurable, and has been measured.
4) the increase in temperature in the atmosphere and the oceans is measurable, and has been measured.
So, we know CO2 traps heat, we’ve been adding A LOT to the atmosphere, and the temperature is rising. The data support the hypothesis. Now, you may hypothesize that it’s something else, but you have to actually NAME that something else. Things have causes. You can’t just say ‘It’s a cycle!’ without saying what it’s a cycle of. Solar irradiation? Yeah, we can measure that, too. It’s not rising. Falling, actually.
Oh, and those allegedly faulty models? Yeah - we’re right in line with them. Funny about that.

re: #271 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis
We all knew he had a combover for a large bald spot, but had no idea that his entire head is bald and covered with carefully combed extremely-long sideburns.
Yeah; I figured he was bald up top - not uncommon for a man of 70, to be honest - but his bald spot is much bigger than I’d thought it was.
Seriously - he should grow a goatee and shave his head. Go for that whole Walter White look (and if he lost about 30 pounds, that’d help too). He’d probably look better; there’s nothing that screams insecurity more than a comb-over.
re: #337 ObserverArt
I had a big post about that yesterday afternoon. It was pointed out it is very complicated and should be easy like California.
Ohio is not California. We have been under Republican state legislature control for some time. To get this done was extremely difficult and hopefully it will make this state more fair. Who knows, it might be the end of assholes like Jim Jordan. It is a start.
I don’t know if it’s good or bad. Or if they were drawn well or not. I just posted the map. You would know better than I. What do you think of the map? I can’t imagine it is easy, really, if you look at the number of citizens and land mass. I don’t know what CA did, either.
As no expert (not even playing one on teevee), I don’t have any comment about How. In short…I got nothin’.

His combover pompadour is so distinctive that it has become his trademark. Yes it is utterly ridiculous but it is uniquely associated with him. He doesn’t care how silly he looks.
If the accusations are untrue, why would he leave? (See Donald Trump as example).
re: #351 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis

He denied the allegations, so he gets to stay. That’s how it works for Republicans. I mean, SS specifically said the difference between Trump and Franken was that Trump denied the far more egregious accusations.

Not to nitpick, and not like I believe him, but the first line says ‘these outrageous allegations are simply false’. That sounds like a denial to me.

The Minutemen are fucking awesome. And yes, not nearly enough people know about them. Also back in the day I would never have predicted Mike Watt playing with Iggy…but I was pretty dumb back then.

That’s how they operate. Blow a hole in the budget with tax cuts, then a week or two later say we don’t have the revenue to pay for programs. They think we’re all as intentionally-clueless as the motivated-non-thinkers who call themselves Republicans.

Yes. I use Mucinex Sinus, and it helps a great deal.
