Jim Wright (Stonekettle) was asked this afternoon from a follower about a relative who is considering military service and enlistment. Mr. Wright’s response on Twitter was “Don’t,” which sparked a long conversation.

He has now written a blog post on why he feels that way.

Monsters (goes to Stonekettle Station)

If I was asked the question myself since I am also a veteran, I would give the same answer, and for the same reason: Enlisting requires an oath or affirmation that one will defend the Constitution, and obey the President and the officers appointed over you.

With Pumpkin Pinochet threatening war with half the planet, there is no way I could uphold such an affirmation. There is no way I would counsel anyone else to do so either.

Yeah, but those Generals he’s got working for him will keep a lead on him.

Yup, since the cynical Bush 43 “Get re-elected by Invading Iraq”, I have felt the same way.

Philip Glass - String Quartet No. 3 “Mishima” , VI

Personally, I dig Philip Glass. This piece is one of my favorite short classical compositions.

Saw the US premiere of his opera version of Kafka’s “The Trial.”

Funny and poignant. Had this incredible solo—must have been an endurance trial for the singer—that’s effectively the whole monologue about “The Law” that ends the novella.

I’ve always detested Philip Glass. Listening to Satyagraha was pure torture. I couldn’t stand more than 2 minutes of that piece.

re: #6 Hecuba’s daughter

For some reason as I’ve grown older I appreciate him more.

Conversely, I find some of the older operas with showy bits—Mozart’s habit of “watch the soprano hit these two crazy notes, again and again”—make my head hurt.

For sheer weirdness, though, I tried watching Lulu, which is twelve-tone and features a Berg’s devotion to symmetry: it’s a palindrome.

Don’t get me wrong. I think Glass has done some brilliant stuff. But he’s a true minimalist. GoGo Penguin isn’t, at least not in classical sense.

His soundtrack for The Fog of War was absolutely brilliant.

You either like 12 tone and associated flights of musical fancy, or you don’t. It’s like anchovies or pineapple on pizzas. I find much of his music boring in the extreme, but then he does something absolutely brilliant.

He’s definitely an acquired taste.

Gee, that’s a real shame. Just waiting for the Tiny Penis Club to blame this on Obama…

Oh there are a number of ways to spin this.

That liar Obama! He was going to take over the country and set up Jade Helm FEMA camps under Wal*Marts to make us gay-marry our lawn mowers and take our guns! Now he’s going to try to do a secret Benghazi on Remington!

Typing that made my head hurt.

I bought the Universal 1931 Dracula Blu-Ray with the alternate Glass score. I wasn’t impressed by it at all, love the original track. Still remember when my Dad and I watched Dracula on WIIC Pittsburgh’s Chiller Theater one late Saturday night when I was a kid. Dad told me of when it was originally released and people fainted in the theaters.

Part of me wonders if William Castle was slipping some $$$ into the pockets of those fainters.

Then there was the time when I was 3 years old and Dad took me to the theater to see The Tingler. Dad sat in one of the chairs with Percepto, the seat buzzer. When it went off, Dad jumped out of his seat. Scared the CRAP out of me…

I think any chance to drop challenging music on people is a mitzvah. Pushing art, in any form on people makes them think, and making people think is a good thing.

There is apparently a back story to the Kate Bush Cloudbursting song.

Kate Bush’s single “Cloudbusting” (1985) described Reich’s arrest through the eyes of his son, Peter, who wrote his father’s story in A Book of Dreams (1973). The video for the song features Donald Sutherland as Reich and Bush as Peter.”

en.wikipedia.org

“This song is told from the point of view of Peter Reich, son of Austro-Hungarian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich. The song discusses Wilhelm’s incarceration by the FBI in 1941.”

I’ve been trying to improve my cultural literacy by watching the original Dr. Who from the 1963 beginning. Amazon has this on their Britbox feature. William Hartnell is the grumpy, fallible and sometimes even deceitful first Doctor with granddaughter Susan (Carol Ann Ford) and a couple of kidnapped teachers to keep him in line. I’m up to episode 10, in which the Doctor and companions finish their very first encounter with the Daleks. This is really fascinating stuff, well written and acted with clever though elementary effects and sets.

Money in the economy is like water in the ecosystem — it needs to circulate. That’s what keeps everything and everyone and the system itself healthy.

If you allow it to collect in too few places, to stagnate… that’s where parasitic diseases come from.

29
Cheechako  Feb 10, 2018 • 12:37:32am

Here’s a story about the benefits of circulating money:

Its a slow day in a little East Texas town. The sun is beating down,
and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and
everybody lives on credit.

On this particular day a rich tourist from back east is driving through
town.

He stops at the motel and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants
to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night.
As soon as the man walks upstairs, the owner grabs the bill and runs
next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt
to the pig farmer.

The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill at the
supplier feed and fuel.

The guy at the Farmer’s Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt
to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had
to offer her “services” on credit.

The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the
hotel owner.

The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the
rich traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, picks up the $100
bill, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and
leaves town.

No one produced anything. No one earned anything.

However, the whole town is now out of debt and now looks to the future
with a lot more optimism.

Chalk up yet another one for General KKKelly!

The former commander of the Marines’ Wounded Warrior Regiment who spent two months in the brig last year after driving drunk to his own arraignment is behind bars again, this time as a civilian.

Todd Shane Tomko, 54, was arrested and lodged in the Adams County Jail in Quincy, Illinois Nov. 22 on outstanding warrants from the Virginia Beach Police Department, officials with the jail confirmed to military.com. The Quincy Herald-Whig, which first published news of Tomko’s arrest, reported that he was arrested on seven felony warrants of indecent liberties with a child.

At Tomko’s May 2016 court-martial in Quantico, Virginia, his military attorney described him as a broken man, beset by post-traumatic stress after a 33-year career, which included combat tours. He was fired from his post as commanding officer of Quantico’s Wounded Warrior Regiment in 2015 amid reports of misconduct including drunkenness at public events and inappropriate relationships with female enlisted subordinates

In all, four active-duty and retired general officers testified for Tomko as character witnesses, including retired Gen. John Kelly, former commander of U.S. Southern Command and now White House chief of staff.

The entire White House is like this. We’ve got a WH Comms Director in Hope Hicks who doesn’t know how to do communications (and the entire admin is a train wreck in this). We’ve got Trump’s inner circle who enables wife beaters and domestic violence.

I don’t care about Hope Hicks’ dating preferences. I do care that she and the rest of the WH publish nonstop lies and obfuscations about what they’re doing and it goes to ongoing complicity in a coverup/obstruction of justice case in the Russia-Trump investigation.

We’ve got Trump inner circle members getting access to classified info despite not having full clearance (Jared Kushner and Porter, we’re looking at them). Neither should ever have been allowed clearance - temporary or otherwise. Kushner should have been perp walked long ago, but the GOP looks the other way while the WH runs roughshod over the rule of law.

The long and short of it is he loved the Nunes memo because it totally misrepresented classified documents and information in a way that benefited him while relying upon a simple verification method: “Trust us, this is totally what the documents say.”

The Schiff memo actually relies heavily upon the same documents, but goes into detail to show how Nunes’ was lying out his ass and the reality is totally at odds with what Trump wants to believe. So of course he’s going to complain that the Dems totally did this as a political stunt (while, as we all know, Nunes’ memo was an act of heroism) and he had “no choice” but to refuse release and order them to send him back something easier to “refute.”

Women’s lives are being shattered and destroyed by abusive men. All are true and none are false. It makes no fucking difference if they are old or new. By the way, Donny, “due process” means Porter has to provide more than his word that the allegations against him are false. When one wife has visual proof of an injury and the other secured a protective order, saying “I’m innocent” is not enough to keep your ass from being shit-canned. The FBI felt the evidence compelling enough to deny him full security clearance…oh wait, I forgot, you think the FBI a den of vipers who are all committed against you. I see where the problem is.

I don’t know at Trump’s business, but most any other business in the US, if your boss gets credible evidence that you abuse your spouse, it’s sufficient grounds to can your ass. You can dispute the decision and argue your defense, but you are not denied “due process” if you mount no serious defense beyond professing your “innocence.”

Well, yeah, because domestic abuse is a crime, and companies are well within their rights not to employ people who are credibly accused of committing a crime. There’s a reason they do background checks on potential employees.

Seems kind of eerily back page that battles in Syria are heating up so strongly. Israel has been hammering many Hezbollah targets in Syria, and it looks like Syria and Russia set up a SAM battle plan designed to mousetrap Israeli planes. It worked, they got one, both aircrew safe. Russian plane shot down and pilot executed maybe a week ago. Turkish attack chopper shot down.

Among all this is an ongoing suicide drone battle, Iranian drones now disperse chaff to survive enemy missile fire. Any of this can trigger a wider conflict. Right when we are half in and half out, and rudderless leadership wise.

One of the guests on Bill Maher last night claimed that the US military has killed more civilians under Trump than were killed in the 8 years under Obama. My limited research under Google indicates that seems to be true. Why isn’t the media attacking the administration for this slaughter? Or does it not matter because the deaths are among Arabs and Muslims? And Americans don’t care if others are dying.

Morning! In some Ohio related political news…

Ohio Universities do not want Richard Spencer speaking on their campuses. He keeps threatening lawsuits…universities ignore him tell him to go away.

He wants to speak at Kent State on May 4th. Yeah right, like they are going to let a shit stirring White Nationalists on campus on May 4th at Kent State. Campus will be tense enough knowing current politics and the history of that date.

Kent State University again rejects speaking date for white nationalist

CINCINNATI (AP) — Kent State University, facing the threat of a lawsuit, reiterated on Friday that it cannot accommodate a request to allow white nationalist Richard Spencer to speak in early May as part of his campus tour.

The university, which is based in Kent but has regional campuses elsewhere in the state, said it had responded to attorney Kyle Bristow reaffirming its earlier response that no suitable space is available for Spencer to speak between April 30 and May 12.

Bristow had told Kent State it had until the end of business Friday to agree to rent space at an “acceptable date and time” or face a lawsuit. Several other schools, including Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati, are in litigation over Spencer.

Tour organizer Cameron Padgett wanted Spencer to speak at Kent State on the May 4 anniversary of Ohio National Guard shootings that killed four students during anti-war protests in 1970. The university said early May is too busy with activities around the end of the academic year.

Bristow said last year that Spencer planned to speak March 14 on the University of Cincinnati campus, but the university said there was no contract in place, and the two sides are now in a legal standoff over the university’s demand for a security fee of nearly $11,000.

Bristow sued the university last month, saying requiring such payment because a speaker is controversial or prompts hostile reaction is discriminatory and unconstitutional. The university said it expected to spend much more on security than the fee. The March date falls during the university’s spring break.

The university on Feb. 2 asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit as meritless, saying the organizer hadn’t paid the fee or obtained required insurance.

He has let the Generals have their way for sure. Trump is getting a pass where Obama took crap day in and day out. I’ll feel like a hypocrite if I don’t admit being a critic of Obamas Syria policy. That been said, Generals are implementing a lack of direction in our policy apart from killing ISIS and Taliban where we can. Israel is doing more to push back on Hezbollah than we are now. Arab spring and ISIS are played out, now we have to manage a return to a nation states in charge policy. And get our troops out finally.

OT: Playing with a newish to me bit of software called “Darktable”. Essentially it’s a Lightroom replacement for linux/opensource and, as such, only does the raw manipulation, lens correction, etc. A working photo editor (GIMP for me) is still needed. Still it’s an interesting change to the workflow for me - I’ve been happy to ignore raw because it’s generally not been work the effort till now, especially since Olympus’ JPEG engine is quite good. Still, I’m always interested in improvement. Here’s what I’ve been puttering on today.

I’ve started with the RAW orf file from my Olympus camera. I used my 50/2 Russian Jupiter 8 for this shot. A copy of the pre-war Zeiss Sonnar, it makes an excellent short tele on the 2x crop sensor of m4/3. I cropped the image a bit to get the square aspect ratio and get the power lines out of the image. I then used the channel mixer in grey scale mode to convert to a passing resemblance to Tri-X (r:.25 g:.35 b:.40, grain iso1600 & 25%) and a fairly short toe and head on the tone curve.

Thoughts and or tips greatly appreciated.

This is always the problem, though. Evidence-free assertion takes almost no time and effort. Evidence-based debunking takes time and explanation. That’s the whole point of the Gish Gallop.

The Nunes Memo is just a couple strides in the Gish Gallop that is the Trump Presidency.

I enjoy cumbias. Thanks for posting the video!

I generally find the style of Spanish spoken by the introducer amusing. Blindingly fast (at least to me) and yet clear. I wonder what her spoken words per minutes is.

Back in the 70s, I spent a month in Mexico, travelling by train and bus (and hitch-hiked once). I found that the words-per-minute decreased as I headed north. I’m almost positive it wasn’t my ability to understand increasing.

Mmmm. I just bought all the stuff I need to make up another batch of chili.

Just thinking…to make little tortilla bowls, could you use a small tea-cup strainer as a mold by pressing the tortilla into it?

Maybe drape the raw tortilla over an inverted small bowl and bake the in an oven? Dunno.

Round ball. Cast iron press. I’ve only seen them in corn-tortilla-size. But, you know, start small.

I guess I could have used my press on these, it worked pretty well last week on some half flour/half masa tortillas but I could tell that the gluten would be an issue - press them out only to watch them shrink back to pucks. Roll them into the ball and rest them for 20 minutes or so before pressing might work.

Thanks for the information. I have to think about it.

It does a lot more than I originally thought it would. For example, I like to keep hard boiled eggs around. When cooking them on the stove ya gotta watch to see when the water boils, time them and just generally have to pay attention. (I have forgotten about them too many times to count to unfortunate results.) With the IP, I put them in, set the timer for 5 minutes and go do whatever til it beeps. Added benefit is that they are always easy to peel. No more stuck shells.

That sounds good. I use the Cook’s Illustrated method. Cold eggs in cold water bring it up to a boil. Cover the pot and turn off the heat. Let them set for 10 minutes. Put them in an ice bath and peel them. They turn out good and no grey rings.

Heh. Perhaps it is my biases. But my experience regarding the speed of spoken English when approaching the US Southwest from the northern urban areas seems to mirror your experiences with Spanish.

I grew up in Pittsburgh. The local region speaks ‘yinzer’, but outside of that area, the local dialect is “Midland”. I spent time in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Northern Texas while in the Army. I found the dialect of spoken English there was a very similar Midland, but spoken a bit more slowly with a drawl.

I just finished reading that Boston Globe article on Chuck C, Johnson.

The closing paragraphs sum up Chucky completely. He’s a full of shit stirrer.

…Johnson says he believes the Nazis had a systematic program to kill Jews. But he’s offered a number of different opinions about the number of Jews killed.

“I think the Red Cross numbers of 250,000 dead in the camps from typhus are more realistic” he wrote on Reddit.

In an interview with the Globe, he gave another answer.

“It’s probably like 3 to 4 [million],” Johnson said. “Somewhere in there. It was a war. And people were not keeping detailed records.”

In a demonstration of how flexible his views can be (another hallmark of Trump’s Washington), Johnson said his thinking on the matter has evolved further. He said this week he has “new information” that’s led him to believe the 6 million figure, after all.

How convenient, he just got new info. No wonder he is pissed off about the article. It depants him and shows him for the smartass he is. If he is all that intelligent then he is also lazy to turn his smarts into duping people as a troll to gain fame. Get a life Chuck.

Consumer Reports did an article on Instant Pots*. Their conclusion was that it does about as well (a little better or a little worse) of multiple gadgets such as slow cookers, rice makers, yogurt makers, etc. And that it does save a lot of counter space.

Gluten is underappreciated. I tried a new pie crust on the first of the month. Came recommended by J. Kenji Lopez Alt, the master of pie crust. Second recipe.

Stella’s Old-Fashioned Flaky Pie Dough takes a tack that’s nearly the opposite of mine. Rather than limiting gluten formation by forming a fat/flour paste, it actually encourages gluten formation in a controlled fashion.

I made a rhubarb pie. No strawberries. Mr. w made the rhubarb last summer, when it was in season. It was his birthday, and he wanted a pie, so I made one.

Another trick I’ve learned lately since I’m trying to eat better. It’s hard for a single person to eat wholesome home-cooked meals because you can’t cook one person portions and who wants to eat the same thing every day for a week? And I don’t want to cook every day anyway. So I got these, freezer and microwave safe so I can cook whatever in the IP, divide it into individual meals and freeze them for a quick meal when I want it. I have quite a menu selection now in my freezer. I also got bowls to make several days worth of salads at once and just grab one so I eat great and healthy with very little food prep requirement.

Trump is agitating for a coup against his own executive branch.

Are we placing bets? I think I’d take Justice versus Trump, even with the Sessions elf in there mucking things up.

There will be a point where the Republican party may even have to face the wrath of Justice.

Would it not be interesting to see the FBI start talking about some investigations that have been going on into Nunes, Ryan, McCarthy, Gohmert, King, Jordan, Meadows, etc.?

Trump it seems is going to force a drag-down knock-out fight; who knows what form it will take because this is all new.

No one ever expected a president to be this caustic to the system. No one expected anyone to be this devious. No one expected his party to back the corruption.

It is uncharted territory, therefore it may take uncharted means to stop it.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I like living while this particular history is being formed. But on it goes.

People keep saying this is Trump, but that’s the surface eructation.

Behind all that talk of “local control” and “keep government out of X” is the understanding that implicit power systems—old boy’s clubs, the local aristocracy, the state’s political machine, et cetera—will create crooked structures…and that’s just dandy, because all of those groups gleefully use “tradition” to create exploitative systems.

Appalling that the judge knows nothing about history or maybe he is one that would have supported Plessy vs Ferguson. Actually sounds like a Federalist Society appointment — racist to the core.

Also growing up in Pittsburgh. We said “Yunz” instead of you. We called them “gumbands” instead of rubber bands. We “Redd up” our rooms instead of cleaned them. We put on “gutchies” instead of underwear. We “Warshed” up instead of washed up.

That sounds good. I use the Cook’s Illustrated method. Cold eggs in cold water bring it up to a boil. Cover the pot and turn off the heat. Let them set for 10 minutes. Put them in an ice bath and peel them. They turn out good and no grey rings.

This technique has never failed me.
