If these students weren’t so well spoken, would they still be getting attacked? Yeah, probably. But I have been so impressed with how they have handled themselves and made strong points in the wake of such a senseless tragedy.

If these students weren’t so well-spoken, they would have found some other reason to discredit them, on top of insulting them because they aren’t flawless orators.

Twitter allows him to freely indulge his power/control needs, specifically attacking anything that makes him doubtful or feel publically put down. He gets to slag everything, lie however he wants, and he’s got bots and believers that will repeat it, praise it, and silence dissent.

How long as Chris Hayes been referring to Fox News Channel as Trump TV - I agreed - but it’s probably been said for months & I’ve not noticed - given I don’t watch nor read about Fox News.

Security footage archival is probably one of the things that’s worth keeping longer-term, but 12 years is a pretty long time. I would imagine most places would recycle the media after 5, 7, or 10 years, maximum.

Yeah, it’s the kind of thing that probably didn’t last more than a year.

It’s wishful thinking to hope that this footage exists.

Then again, the Access Hollywood tape did exist, and there’s supposedly more incriminating footage that Apprentice producers are keeping under wraps.

TV footage is a weird animal, though. Those guys keep archives for-fucking-ever. Generally it’s so that they can remaster it for another round of profit if the display medium changes in the future. I mean, think about the fact that Doctor Who first aired in 1963, and the BBC still had tapes laying around in archive facilities within the last decade.

It’s funny about that, though. They don’t have the video for some of those episodes, but they do have the audio. They’ve created animated versions of those episodes using the existing audio.

I remember a few years back, TCM used some archival footage, photo stills, and script notes to re-create an approximate version of Lon Chaney Sr.’s long-lost “London After Midnight.”

Old-tech video capture (kinetoscope) used silver-based film. Thousands of miles of it were recycled to recover the metal.

Seriously, being on a TV camera prior to the Internet age is the closest thing there was to immortality at that time. They kept almost literally everything, in the hopes that maybe, someday, it might prove to be worth keeping.

You are correct. They keep a lot of stuff, so much stuff that the archiving itself has become news stories. It was interesting that you mentioned Doctor Who. I just found wikipedia article on the fact that there are missing episodes of the show:

Numerous portions of the long-running British science-fiction television programme Doctor Who are no longer held by the BBC. Between 1967 and 1978 the BBC routinely deleted archive programmes, for various practical reasons (lack of space, scarcity of materials, a lack of rebroadcast rights).[1] As a result of the cull, 97 of 253 episodes from the programme’s first six years are currently missing, primarily from seasons 3 through 5, leaving 26 serials incomplete. Many more were considered lost until recovered from various sources, mostly overseas broadcasters.

Doctor Who is not unique in its losses, as many broadcasters regularly cleared their archives in this manner. Until the BBC changed its archiving policy in 1978, thousands of hours of programming, in all genres, were deleted. Other affected BBC series include Dad’s Army, Z-Cars, The Wednesday Play, Steptoe and Son, and Not Only… But Also.[2] ITV regional franchises also deleted many programmes, including early videotaped episodes of The Avengers.[3]

Doctor Who is unusual, however, in that each of its 97 missing episodes survives in audio form, recorded off-air by fans at home.[4] Most episodes are also represented by production stills, telesnaps, or short video clips. Furthermore, after careful restoration, all 1970s episodes exist in full colour, which is not always the case for other series.

It’s because TV archives are a potential profit source - “50th-anniversary remastered from the original source! Only $19.99!” Security footage, on the other hand, serves no purpose other than evidence in a criminal or civil court case. Once the statute of limitations has passed on the common types of court cases, the balance sheet stands at the cost of storage versus exactly zero profit.

The CEO at the evil too big to fail bank is having a town hall next month. They’re soliciting questions. I submitted a question (which I stole from the NYTimes’ DealBook from yesterday) asking if we couldn’t just not allow our credit cards to be used to purchase assault weapons.

There is precedent for it; you can’t purchase some things with credit cards (examples that come to mind are Bitcoin and online gambling). I don’t know how possible it is, but I thought it was worth a try. It would force gun nuts to get their assault weapons with cash, which might help to cut down on the supply. I’m willing to try anything at this moment.

Here’s the DealBook article: nytimes.com

Hoping some other people got the same idea from the article. I know I passed it on to one of my simpatico friends at work.

I’ve been reading a lot of FARK lately; I don’t know why… I must have a masochistic streak in me. Anyways, a lot of the commenters are saying something along the lines of, “If the gun-fuckers don’t compromise on this, give us at least SOME kind of partial weapons ban, then eventually the tide will turn and they will get ALL their gunz taken away.” I don’t think that will ever happen, unfortunately, but I can definitely see the day where their position is weakened to the point where they will have to agree to whatever we demand - short of a total gun ban - because they were too goddamn stubborn to see that they were in the wrong, that they valued their guns over human lives.

Dez: Me and the other 3 boys. We stand at the front and they get behind us.*I internally went from 0 to 100 real quick. My child is one of only 2 black children in a class of 23. Being transparent, I immediately went to the “why is my black son being put on the front line?” (Just being real) So I asked before I verbally stated my thoughts*

Me: Why did you get picked to stand in front of everyone else if a shooter came in your school?”

“Dez: I didn’t get picked. I volunteered to push the table and protect my friends

Me: *immediate nausea * Dez why would you volunteer to do that?

Dez: If it came down to it I would rather be the one that died protecting my friends than have an entire class die and I be the only one that lived.

This is true. Entertainment Tonight has an amazing machine room, because they need to keep at least one operational deck for all of the formats in their archives - which go LITERALLY MILLENIA

The GOP doesn’t think. They react. I caught a glimpse of an interview with Kevin and David Hogg tonight, Mr. Hogg is a Navy vet who has taught and went in to the FBI. This is the man they’re attacking because his son dared to speak out about guns. Eventually the GOP will run out of angry white voters and they’ll have to go to people they’ve scorned and I hope those voters give the GOP a much deserved political dirt nap.

Ya know my impression of gun nuts is they’re isolated. They don’t know or really care about the dangerous side effects of gun violence because it hasn’t impacted them. I see urbanites who support gun control talked down to as if they don’t understand rural life and that may well be true but I wonder how well these people understand cities. My impression of them is that they don’t know how reality operates. They think life and gun battles work the way they do in the movies, where you nail a perfect headshot without even trying, where no civilians get in the way, where you have 360-degree vision and always know where everyone is, where every shot that hits you is a flesh wound.

There’s a story on the “Not Always Right” website about a guy who goes into a gun shop and tells them he wants a gun so he can shoot a YouTube video of him curving a bullet around a friend’s head like they did in the movie “Wanted.” I suspect a lot of gun fanatics have no idea that reality doesn’t operate like movies do.

Ileum spelled with an “E” — as it is written in the bill — is part of the small intestine, according to the dictionary website.

NRA TV agitating for an ideological purge:

CHUCK HOLTON (NRATV CORRESPONDENT): Yeah, no question whatsoever, Grant. The Obama administration made a very intentional push to change the nature, to change the political climate in the military and in law enforcement, especially federal law enforcement, around the country. And in many ways, they succeeded. In the previous eight years, you could not get promoted unless you signed on to the radical agenda of the Obama administration. And that was — that led to what we see today. This deep state that is working actively against our president and that is not good for our country. There is no two ways about it. That is just not healthy for our country.

Amazing that all this drunk guy at the end of the bar talk is now being presented in “believe it, it’s the NEWS” format.

So Klaus Nomi came up the other day, and I’ve been chasing him on Youtube for a bit. This is such as nice little excerpt from a documentary about him:

I just did a web site for the people responsible for that show, who worked out of a performance space on St. Mark’s Place called Club 57. They were the ones who established Irving Plaza as a performance venue, and Club 57 was an early home for NYC artists like Haring, Basquiat, and any number of performers, Nomi included.

His father is also a Navy vet. Want to attack Kevin Hogg for that too, Jim? Is it wrong of me to hope a fist finds its way to Hoft’s face?

Insane AND pathetic:

“…Donald Trump’s jealous obsession with his predecessor is well known, but a Washington Post report indicates the psychosis is even worse than you think. (The first rule of Trump: it is always worse than you think.) Apparently, the ways Trump attempts to demonstrate his superiority over Barack Obama extends to allegedly greater use of the Oval Office. Every tour stop would include an emphasis on this point.

“Obama never used the Oval, but Trump is different,” the president would say, referring to himself in the third person as he often does, according to people who have witnessed the tours.”

A lot of people don’t know but I was the first to use the Oval Office. If he said that in my presence, I’d laugh at him because that’s a pathetic claim even for him.

So: Barack Obama was POTUS for eight years: what does Trump imagine he was doing all that time? And all those photos of Obama with everybody and anybody in the Oval Office? Does he think they were all faked at a set (by a golf course, naturally) and nobody - nobody in eight whole years - ever said a word?

“Insane and pathetic” doesn’t even begin…
