In my part of the world, the English name for this is “cableway” or “cable car.” Most in China are not used to haul people up to ski down a mountain, but to bring them to some lofty mountaintop scenic area or temple.

Trams are what they call interurbans or trolley cars here. Probably the British influence.

Skiing is beginning to catch on here. Some southern cities have indoor ski areas — bunny slopes mostly — where folks can get a taste of sliding downhill on flat sticks. But I’m not sure if China has developed any proper ski areas yet.

Bounties are part of the whole Initial Coin Offering (ICO) craze, where projects sell cryptocurrency tokens to raise money for their projects and/or extravagant lifestyles. They award extra tokens (bounties) to participants who promote the ICO on social media. Bounty0x apparently will serve as go-between to match bounty hunters (aka shills) with bounty providers (aka ICOs).

Some ICOs are for legitimate projects with definite use cases. Others are scams created mostly to enrich the developers/leaders. One notable ICO recently took in several million dollars only to abruptly close up shop and replace its website with only one word: penis.

I have no idea. They probably have done a good job covering their tracks.

Another, bigger ICO fail is the Tezos project, which technologically seems very good but has project leaders, the Breitmans, who are better engineers and coders than business people. There are hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in this project while the Breitmans and the head of the foundation they created to manage the money argue over who has control over the money and the future of the project. It’s a total mess, and several class action lawsuits have been filed against the Breitmans and the Foundation leaders.

No product has yet to be created.

The mining is a computational way to verify a transaction on the blockchain (distributed ledger). IOW if I send you some Bitcoin, the network has to verify the amount, the sender and the recipient so that the transaction is known to be unique and cannot be replicated by someone else (to steal the money). The cryptography required to make everything private and irreversible is what requires the computational power.

That’s called Proof of Work, and the miner who solves the cryptographic puzzle to verify the transaction gets rewarded with some Bitcoin.

There are other verification systems that do not require mining and the related power consumption to run the computers.

I doubt they go that far, raising the age requirement is too close to an actual restriction on arms themselves and creating the precedent for new hardline restrictions is anathema to most GOP reps. The most we’re going to get is a ban on bump stock accessories, some idiotic bullshit plan to arm teachers, and a vague promise to study mental health while scapegoating video games, movies and popular culture. We might get universal background checks but I’d be surprised, more likely we just get some talk about “strengthening” the current NICS check system for FFL transations that won’t amount to any real difference.

In a sense, it does exist, as an electronic version of the money you sent someone else.

Suppose I want to send you $20. I can use Coinbase to buy $20 of Bitcoin, which converts the electronic version of the $20 I have in my bank account to an equivalent amount of Bitcoin, which I send to you over the ‘Net. Then you can leave that Bitcoin as is, deposit it into your bank account, or convert it into a $20 bill by using an ATM if you like.

It’s not much different than the code used by the credit card networks when you pay for something online. The big difference is how the transaction is verified. With a credit card, you rely on the CC company to ensure they money you sent ends up where it should go, only once. With Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, you’re relying on a decentralized network to verify the transaction without any human intervention.

Oh, you’ve got to watch the first two seasons. The series is based on a book series, and holds true to the written version pretty well. The tech is mostly real-world physics, and the writers have done a great job of working out the politics of a human civilization distributed across Earth, Moon, Mars, the Asteroid Belt and several other bases. Plus, the characters are believable and the acting is quite good.

It’s good enough I would happily watch it all over again, if I had the time.

Oh, you’ve got to watch the first two seasons. The series is based on a book series, and holds true to the written version pretty well. The tech is mostly real-world physics, and the writers have done a great job of working out the politics of a human civilization distributed across Earth, Moon, Mars, the Asteroid Belt and several other bases. Plus, the characters are believable and the acting is quite good.

It’s good enough I would happily watch it all over again, if I had the time.

As a streamer, where would I find this? I have subscriptions to all of the major streaming networks (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime). If I have to pay for it, I can budget for it, despite my current employment status.

It’s not much different than the code used by the credit card networks when you pay for something online. The big difference is how the transaction is verified. With a credit card, you rely on the CC company to ensure they money you sent ends up where it should go, only once. With Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, you’re relying on a decentralized network to verify the transaction without any human intervention.

Except there is no buyer protection for the person sending bitcoin to the recipient if the recipient doesn’t fulfill their end of the deal, the transaction fee can vary wildly and the transaction methodology uses up thousands of times more energy to complete.

Buyer protection - True. Transactions are irreversible, and there is no way to get your money back.
Fees — Segwit has reduced Bitcoin’s fees to less than 25 cents, and the fee swings are less volatile than before.
Energy use — Definitely true. One major disadvantage to the Bitcoin Proof of Work system is the power consumption. The creator apparently did not take into consideration how quickly usage would grow, and how congested the network could get.

Bitcoin as a payment system sucks. Visa or Mastercard can process thousands of transactions per second. Bitcoin could barely manage a handful before SegWit. So, transactions could sometimes take two hours to be confirmed, and cost as much as $100. Other systems offer lower fees and faster times, but Bitcoin being the first gets most of the attention.

These companies also probably don’t want their new hires dragging them into Mueller’s probe, even if only by association. Then there’s the rank dysfunction and backbiting. If the goal is to hire people with connections you want some assurance that even absent Trump those connections will be positive, and none of these people really seem to like each other even a little bit. The entire GOP establishment is in a forced marriage with Trump and his administration, and while they’re all smiling and putting on a show of unity in public, in private they’re busy crafting punji sticks and smearing them with feces.

It was geared mostly to a child audience, I assume, and kids would probably not have picked up on the parental irresponsibility and sexual subtext. At least I didn’t.

Interesting to compare Lost in Space (1965-68) and Star Trek (1966-69), both of which I watched as a kid. LiS appealed to a younger audience, while ST:TOS to a more adult audience. At age 9, Lost in Space was worth watching, but I quickly realized by age 10 that Lost in Space was pretty stupid and Star Trek was much better.

Irwin Allen also created Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. My buddies and I would later mock the show for its overuse of exploding electrical panels whenever the ship ran into danger, but when I was 8 years old I was willing to ignore the shoddy workmanship in a futuristic submarine.

The students learned how the NRA goes to work as soon news reporters and the public move on to the next story.

“That’s not the NRA’s fault, that’s our fault,” Foster says. “We lose attention and that’s why interest groups run the country. If it’s not the NRA then it’s another group.”

Foster teaches AP Government all day: It’s the only subject he teaches. He had taught this particular special interest lesson four times by the time the gunman started shooting.

Emma Gonzales read her paper for her AP Government class on CNN … that was the source for her speech. The class about special interest groups was given the day of the shooting in her school.

To ask coherence of President Trump is to ask too much of a man with the attention span of a tweet, and for whom cognitive dissonance is not something he spends nights losing sleep over. So we have had large tax cuts, putting money into the pockets of consumers, which will enable them to increase their spending (saving is not in fashion in America at the moment). Which means they will buy more stuff, much of it imported, widening our already record trade deficit.

But the president doesn’t like trade deficits—job killers as he sees it—and so he has put tariffs on washing machines and solar panels and now is deciding what costs and restrictions to place on imports of steel and aluminium. A 1962 statute permits him to use tariffs or quotas if imports lead to “a weakening of our national economy that may impair national security.” Which he is assured by a report from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that imports of steel and aluminium do.

But our economy is strong, not “weakening,” the profit outlook for the steel industry is “rosy” according to the Wall Street Journal, and tariffs are opposed by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who is responsible for our natural security. All of which makes it difficult to understand how Ross’ Commerce Department reached the conclusion it did. Unless you know a bit of background.

Senators gave the measure preliminary approval Thursday. The bill could receive final Senate approval next week, after which it would go to the House.

The bill requires presidential and vice presidential candidates to release their tax returns for the preceding five years. It was introduced after President Donald Trump bucked tradition and did not release his tax returns during his 2016 campaign.

Maryland could be the first state to enact such a requirement.

California and New Jersey passed similar bills, but they were vetoed.

Hawaii’s House and Senate passed proposals last year, but both bills died after Hawaii’s attorney general raised concerns about potential lawsuits.

Kinda puzzled. Who at State okays the delivery of 200+ offensive anti tank/personnel/low flying aircraft missiles (shoulder launched Javelin) to Ukraine? Escalating tensions with Russia at State and kowtowing at the WH.

Nearly four years after Russia’s initial incursion into Ukrainian territory and the shadow war that sparked off in Eastern Ukraine shortly after, the U.S. State Department cleared Ukraine to purchase FGM-148 Javelin advanced anti-tank missiles.

According to Defense News the $47M deal includes 210 Javelin missiles, 37 command launch units (CLU) and two spares, as well as training, logistics and support. This would be the first time the United States has agreed to provide advanced lethal weaponry to Ukraine since the conflict began.

Put this in context of Putin sabre rattling with doomsday weapons and naming us as the problem.

St. Louis is a long way from here. All the way across Nebraska from the Wyoming line to Omaha, then down I-29 to Kansas City, then across Missouri to St. Louis.

Crook or hack as he may be, Sec’y Ross isn’t stupid: that the main effect of the “Trump Tariff” is likely to simply be slightly-higher prices for manufactured goods using imported metals (and of that “ton” of steel used in making a car, the tariff will only apply to the imported portion) was something that could have been predicted well in advance. That these import taxes will - as the Orange Anus predicts - somehow spur a significant increase in domestic manufacturing and those JOBS! JOBS! JOBS! he loves to blather about is -at best - a dubious proposition. From the get-go. But of course, the actual effects of the tariffs was probably always a secondary priority: Priority No. 1 is the same as it’s been all along: getting fawning, laudatory media coverage for the Moron-In-Chief.

So I have my car serviced and they change the oil filter. Slap a 25% tariff on my oil filter. A new computer gets a 25% tariff on the steel parts in it.

This isn’t going to resurrect the steel industry, but in late-stage capitalism it will allow the rich to cash out.

The automakers will face choice to eat the higher cost (doubtful) or pass it on (more likely). Even if it’s several hundred dollars, it’s more than enough to overcome the supposed tax scam benefits to majority of Americans.

And that goes for all the other materials people buy - from canned goods to durable goods. It’s a hike that will dampen demand further.

Oh, and it’s a shot across the bow at Canada, not China or Russia.

Since we are already pretty close to full employment, I expect this tariff to not have much more effect than what the Fed is planning to do to check inflation anyway by raising interest rates. Trump chose steel for symbolic reasons. It’s key to the America of 1950-1960, which he thinks we should become again. That’s what MAGA means, what ‘Take America Back’ means, that we become once again the industrial powerhouse, digging coal, making steel, building ships - these are literally the industries he and Bannon talked about. Why? They’re MANLY! Big, strong (and almost exclusively white) men, doing big dangerous jobs!

And for this vision of Days Of The Future Past, he wants to give up the actual future, in green energy, sustainability, information technology. He’s trying to re-create a mid 20th Century country in the 21st century. EVEN IF we could re-establish the steel mill economy of the 1950s in America, who’d buy our steel at the prices we’d have to charge?

Wife and I (before child) were in Loveland, CO at Serious Texas BBQ. Arnold was in front of us and ordered ribs, brisket, smoked turkey, sausage (about $40 of meat) and then ordered a piece of pie. As they got the meat ready for him he literally ate the piece of pie in 3 bites while his assistant paid. He then asked for 2 more pieces of pie.

We said hi - got a picture - hes a really nice guy. Apparently he was there because he was doing a gym thing in the area.

May’s speech was still cake-and-eat-it, while handwaving away what the hell a “customs union but not THAT customs union” is supposed to mean in practice.

Northern Ireland is the problem that they won’t be able to avoid. The UK is committed to no hard border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. AND, the UK is committed to the common UK market, that is, between NI and the rest of the UK. So, there’s no border between the EU and NI, and there’s no border between NI and rest of UK. BUT, the UK is leaving the EU customs union somehow. Okay.

And the EU has said over and over again that it’s not interested in some sort of blob glommed on to the EU common market where goods from who-knows-where can mysteriously come and go according to the UK’s whims. Besides, this whole arrangement is supposed to be stood up, implemented, staffed, and operational in a little more than a year.

The UK is going to be very obviously staring into the abyss in a few months, and the only way out I can see is a “temporary” Norway-like arrangement where nothing essentially changes except the UK can’t vote on anything and gets kicked out of EU agencies. Then, everyone has to wait for someone in the UK to force the country back to its senses and go back in, minus a bunch of special privileges.

I’m not sure that’s quite an accurate assessment: I think the blame goes both ways. As much as the military tried to cover their “political” bases wrt to dealing with LBJ over Vietnam, Johnson also placed a great deal of reliance on the Pentagon’s war-planning and war-making strategies to achieve a “win” - or at least he did until the Tet Offensive in 1968, after which the generals could only suggest deploying even MORE troops (more than the 500,000 [!!] already in-theater) as a “strategy”. After which even LBJ started to see the light….

Old Ho may not have been a “fanatic”, but he most definitely a Communist (had been for decades), and was firmly dedicated to establishing a Marxist-style state in Vietnam. Which wasn’t - and never has been - a bloodless process. Though had we (the US), supported his government in 1946 (rather than backing De Gaulle in his “re-colonization” scheme), Vietnam could have turned out to be the Asian Yugoslavia (Communist, but “unaligned” and reasonably “open”), and another twenty years of bloody war might have been avoided.

Not the first big business man to hold a cabinet position, but certainly one of the most controversial.

In my opinion, I think he died a troubled man because of some of his actions.

we’re touching on two problems though - staffing is one. the other is understanding the mechanics of the position

i would argue that even a competent staff would not be enough to compensate

the presidency (and the cabinet and high level departmental posts) need more than business executive experience (managing people, executive decision making)

and it’s more than just legislative experience, though that helps

you’ve also got to know this system and these players

and we’re only touching on domestic policy and legislating. add in foreign policy, the military, etc and it’ll take more than 8 years to learn it all

When I transferred from recruiting duty to Spain, I flew out of Philadelphia on the regularly scheduled MAC fight with my wife and son and about a thousand soldiers headed to Kuwait on an L-1011.

We ran into a horrendous storm over the Atlantic that was affecting Spain and Portugal and were sent to make a landing at the Azores instead.

The landing was like she described there in Washington - the pilot could not force the plane down on the runway until we were halfway down it, and he burnt out the brakes stopping it (we ended up on the runway apron).

When we got into the terminal there were a couple fighter pilots standing outside watching the activity (mechanics, fire department, &c). One said “that guy’s a helluva pilot.” The other said “Better him than me.”

We spent three days in the Azores waiting to get the brakes on the plane fixed.

Almost every demonstration, march, sit-in or other action brought out swarms of white politicians and just general racists, as well as newspaper editorials, claiming the protesters were agitators “paid by Russia.”

The same kinds of crazy accusations fly today from the same kinds of racists and RWNJs, but for some reason none of them uses the “paid by Russia” line. Wonder why.

While Delta can’t just uproot and move to a different airport (infrastructure takes time to build), I imagine they could uproot their corporate headquarters pretty quickly, and possibly distribute flights the way they used to be done (regional hubs) and take them out of Georgia if they really want to do that.

On the other hand, the tax break on fuel they lost they might consider to be simply not worth fighting over. While aviation fuel is pretty expensive, it’s not the only cost of operating an airline.

Jeff Bezos on the other hand might seriously consider scratching Georgia off his list. If he does, I hope he loudly announces Amazon doesn’t bow to conservative extortion.

While Delta can’t just uproot and move to a different airport (infrastructure takes time to build), I imagine they could uproot their corporate headquarters pretty quickly, and possibly distribute flights the way they used to be done (regional hubs) and take them out of Georgia if they really want to do that.

On the other hand, the tax break on fuel they lost they might consider to be simply not worth fighting over. While aviation fuel is pretty expensive, it’s not the only cost of operating an airline.

Jeff Bezos on the other hand might seriously consider scratching Georgia off his list. If he does, I hope he loudly announces Amazon doesn’t bow to conservative extortion.

I remember a couple years back, coming home during a heavy rainstorm. Traffic was so slow on my usual route that I took a back road, not realizing 1) how high the creek would be running and 2) just how low the road is relative to that.

I did what they tell you never to do, and drove through a flooded patch. But I let a Honda Civic go through first.

We both made it, and there were no other flooded places, but in retrospect that was one of the STUPIDEST things I’ve ever done!

Okay…just signed up for TSA Pre online. Signed the missus up too. Go in Monday morning to get fingerprinted and show them my passport. 5 years for $85. Kind of silly not to do it.

Too bad I didn’t think of this two months ago. Probably won’t get to use it for our flight to Hawaii on the 11th.
