Roland Scahill just followed me, he has a blue check mark but I never heard of him so I Googled. Hmmm lmgtfy.com

A former theater agent has been sentenced to six months in jail after admitting that he bilked investors of hundreds of thousands of dollars to back a nonexistent Broadway play.

Roland Scahill, 42, confessed to a scheme that took place between October 2014 and August 2015, in which Mr. Scahill told associates that he had secured the rights to the life story of Kathleen Battle, the opera singer, and was going to produce a one-woman play called “The Kathleen Battle Project” with Lupita Nyong’o as its star.

Oh good, if you’re still here, you can help solve a mystery! Does the “Show Users” function only drop people from the list if they log out or close the thread tab? I thought it would look for thread activity like commenting or dinging, but if not, could someone’s name stay on that list for as long as the tab stayed open…?

It’s very difficult to tell when a user is “online” or “active” in a Web sense; websites have very little control over getting notified if a user navigates away or closes the window. Most sites, such as Facebook, set a timer and say that the user has performed some action within the last, say, 15 minutes. My assumption is that the “Show Users” function behaves the same way.

As much as I hate discussing politics on FB, if we expect to sway anybody’s opinions away from the GOP/Glibertarian POV, we will need to engage the enemy (as it were). I used to do this whenever a friend sent me one of those numbskull emails. I’d have to debunk whatever was being expounded in a follow-up email to the entire recipient list.

Eventually she gave up including me on those mass email forwards.

So, yeah, I need to do the same on FB.

Nah. I’ve boarded that thing more than a few times, I rode it to ski down and ride it again. When the snow is deep it’s the greatest amusement park in the world, at least for a guy like me who’s been skiing since I was four years old.

In my part of the world, the English name for this is “cableway” or “cable car.” Most in China are not used to haul people up to ski down a mountain, but to bring them to some lofty mountaintop scenic area or temple.

Trams are what they call interurbans or trolley cars here. Probably the British influence.

Skiing is beginning to catch on here. Some southern cities have indoor ski areas — bunny slopes mostly — where folks can get a taste of sliding downhill on flat sticks. But I’m not sure if China has developed any proper ski areas yet.

Well put. It’s going to be a crucial time. An army or a political cause might make good or bad choices in tactics or strategy, but the very worst thing either group can do is to ignore the enemy.

“I saw him in Nashville” in April 2015, Torshin added later, the date and site of the NRA’s 2015 convention. Trump gave a speech at that convention, the outlines of which would become familiar as his stump speech throughout the 2016 presidential campaign. The White House did not respond to repeated requests for comment by NPR, but denied Trump has ever met Torshin to Bloomberg News in 2017.

Among his tens of thousands of tweets, Torshin also documented his attendance at every NRA convention between 2012 and 2016, only some of which have been previously reported.

Torshin’s attendance at the NRA convention in 2016 is where he reportedly met with Donald Trump, Jr.

Bounties are part of the whole Initial Coin Offering (ICO) craze, where projects sell cryptocurrency tokens to raise money for their projects and/or extravagant lifestyles. They award extra tokens (bounties) to participants who promote the ICO on social media. Bounty0x apparently will serve as go-between to match bounty hunters (aka shills) with bounty providers (aka ICOs).

Some ICOs are for legitimate projects with definite use cases. Others are scams created mostly to enrich the developers/leaders. One notable ICO recently took in several million dollars only to abruptly close up shop and replace its website with only one word: penis.

I have no idea. They probably have done a good job covering their tracks.

Another, bigger ICO fail is the Tezos project, which technologically seems very good but has project leaders, the Breitmans, who are better engineers and coders than business people. There are hundreds of millions of dollars tied up in this project while the Breitmans and the head of the foundation they created to manage the money argue over who has control over the money and the future of the project. It’s a total mess, and several class action lawsuits have been filed against the Breitmans and the Foundation leaders.

No product has yet to be created.

The mining is a computational way to verify a transaction on the blockchain (distributed ledger). IOW if I send you some Bitcoin, the network has to verify the amount, the sender and the recipient so that the transaction is known to be unique and cannot be replicated by someone else (to steal the money). The cryptography required to make everything private and irreversible is what requires the computational power.

That’s called Proof of Work, and the miner who solves the cryptographic puzzle to verify the transaction gets rewarded with some Bitcoin.

There are other verification systems that do not require mining and the related power consumption to run the computers.

I doubt they go that far, raising the age requirement is too close to an actual restriction on arms themselves and creating the precedent for new hardline restrictions is anathema to most GOP reps. The most we’re going to get is a ban on bump stock accessories, some idiotic bullshit plan to arm teachers, and a vague promise to study mental health while scapegoating video games, movies and popular culture. We might get universal background checks but I’d be surprised, more likely we just get some talk about “strengthening” the current NICS check system for FFL transations that won’t amount to any real difference.

re: #166 MsJ

But it still doesn’t exist. I simply can’t wrap my head around it.

In a sense, it does exist, as an electronic version of the money you sent someone else.

Suppose I want to send you $20. I can use Coinbase to buy $20 of Bitcoin, which converts the electronic version of the $20 I have in my bank account to an equivalent amount of Bitcoin, which I send to you over the ‘Net. Then you can leave that Bitcoin as is, deposit it into your bank account, or convert it into a $20 bill by using an ATM if you like.

It’s not much different than the code used by the credit card networks when you pay for something online. The big difference is how the transaction is verified. With a credit card, you rely on the CC company to ensure they money you sent ends up where it should go, only once. With Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, you’re relying on a decentralized network to verify the transaction without any human intervention.

Oh, you’ve got to watch the first two seasons. The series is based on a book series, and holds true to the written version pretty well. The tech is mostly real-world physics, and the writers have done a great job of working out the politics of a human civilization distributed across Earth, Moon, Mars, the Asteroid Belt and several other bases. Plus, the characters are believable and the acting is quite good.

It’s good enough I would happily watch it all over again, if I had the time.

Except there is no buyer protection for the person sending bitcoin to the recipient if the recipient doesn’t fulfill their end of the deal, the transaction fee can vary wildly and the transaction methodology uses up thousands of times more energy to complete.

That’s a lot of disparate real estate. Denver to Colorado Springs is a good 45 minutes. In good weather. I’m not sure where the other locations mentioned are located but it sounds like 45 minutes would be short.

Buyer protection - True. Transactions are irreversible, and there is no way to get your money back.
Fees — Segwit has reduced Bitcoin’s fees to less than 25 cents, and the fee swings are less volatile than before.
Energy use — Definitely true. One major disadvantage to the Bitcoin Proof of Work system is the power consumption. The creator apparently did not take into consideration how quickly usage would grow, and how congested the network could get.

Bitcoin as a payment system sucks. Visa or Mastercard can process thousands of transactions per second. Bitcoin could barely manage a handful before SegWit. So, transactions could sometimes take two hours to be confirmed, and cost as much as $100. Other systems offer lower fees and faster times, but Bitcoin being the first gets most of the attention.

“Well, we constantly pair our oldest daughter with the captain, and our two youngest we leave to the care of the robot that routinely goes berserk and the 100% saboteur, 50-50 some kind of disturbing sexual predator, Mr Smith.”

It was geared mostly to a child audience, I assume, and kids would probably not have picked up on the parental irresponsibility and sexual subtext. At least I didn’t.

Interesting to compare Lost in Space (1965-68) and Star Trek (1966-69), both of which I watched as a kid. LiS appealed to a younger audience, while ST:TOS to a more adult audience. At age 9, Lost in Space was worth watching, but I quickly realized by age 10 that Lost in Space was pretty stupid and Star Trek was much better.

Irwin Allen also created Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. My buddies and I would later mock the show for its overuse of exploding electrical panels whenever the ship ran into danger, but when I was 8 years old I was willing to ignore the shoddy workmanship in a futuristic submarine.

The ones he ended up with are those (a) craving position and power, so they’d work for Vlad the Impaler or (b) so incompetent/clueless that they had no idea what their job would entail or (c) hoping to be the enabler of the RWNJ agenda of tearing down the federal government, or some combination of those three.

The Teacher Who Taught His Students to Challenge the NRA (goes to Splinter News), more at the link:

On the day of the shooting, Foster taught the AP Gov students about special interest groups, like the NAACP, American Medical Association, and the National Rifle Association. His lesson plan that day included a discussion about the Columbine and Sandy Hook school shootings, with emphasis on how every politician comes out afterward a tragedy to say the right thing about changing gun regulation. The students learned how the NRA goes to work as soon news reporters and the public move on to the next story.

“That’s not the NRA’s fault, that’s our fault,” Foster says. “We lose attention and that’s why interest groups run the country. If it’s not the NRA then it’s another group.”

Foster teaches AP Government all day: It’s the only subject he teaches. He had taught this particular special interest lesson four times by the time the gunman started shooting.

Emma Gonzales read her paper for her AP Government class on CNN … that was the source for her speech. The class about special interest groups was given the day of the shooting in her school.

Mr. Bill Kristol still being mostly correct. I’m not sure what to make of that.

All Trump’s Trade Wars (goes to the Weekly Standard)

To ask coherence of President Trump is to ask too much of a man with the attention span of a tweet, and for whom cognitive dissonance is not something he spends nights losing sleep over. So we have had large tax cuts, putting money into the pockets of consumers, which will enable them to increase their spending (saving is not in fashion in America at the moment). Which means they will buy more stuff, much of it imported, widening our already record trade deficit.

But the president doesn’t like trade deficits—job killers as he sees it—and so he has put tariffs on washing machines and solar panels and now is deciding what costs and restrictions to place on imports of steel and aluminium. A 1962 statute permits him to use tariffs or quotas if imports lead to “a weakening of our national economy that may impair national security.” Which he is assured by a report from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that imports of steel and aluminium do.

But our economy is strong, not “weakening,” the profit outlook for the steel industry is “rosy” according to the Wall Street Journal, and tariffs are opposed by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who is responsible for our natural security. All of which makes it difficult to understand how Ross’ Commerce Department reached the conclusion it did. Unless you know a bit of background.

Depth Of Russian Politician’s Cultivation Of NRA Ties Revealed

A prominent Kremlin-linked Russian politician has methodically cultivated ties with leaders of the National Rifle Association, and documented efforts in real time over six years to leverage those connections and gain access deeper into American politics, NPR has learned.

Russian politician Alexander Torshin claimed his ties to the National Rifle Association provided him access to Donald Trump — and the opportunity to serve as a foreign election observer in the United States during the 2012 election.

Torshin is a prolific Twitter user, logging nearly 150,000 tweets, mostly in Russian, since his account was created in 2011. Previously obscured by language and by sheer volume of tweets, Torshin has written numerous times about his connections with the NRA, of which he’s a known paid lifetime member.

Depth Of Russian Politician’s Cultivation Of NRA Ties Revealed

If the good guys can nail Wayne LaPierre and his gang of murder apologists as Russian stooges, it may well initiate the sudden collapse of what I called the Evil Bullshit Empire in this post last year.

My hope is that the entire Evil Bullshit Empire; Republicans, religious right quacks, Russian stooge conspiracy media, MLM pseudoscience, etc; is about to collapse in a massive heap of cultural wreckage. What are the chances? Slim, but more than zero, at least in terms of national political importance.
There is a precedent for a quack movement disintegrating with breathtaking speed just as it reached the height of its power and influence: the 1920s Ku Klux Klan. In 1925, the Klan boasted 6 million members. Then the most powerful Klan leader, DC Stephenson of Indiana, was convicted in a sensational murder and kidnapping case. Membership went into freefall. By 1930, it was down to 30,000 nationwide. The national organization was formally abolished in `1944 after it could not pay back taxes, to be replaced by a menagerie of local and regional Klans that seem to flit in and out of existence like so many biting gnats.

“Emotionally overwhelmed” by the headlines over Rob Porter, manipulated by Kelly, and interviewed by Mueller and Congress, the president’s surrogate daughter is leaving the Trump bunker at one of his toughest moments.

Germany is under a massive Russian cyberattack right now, but the US is nowhere to be seen, if not downright complicit (through trump’s recent calls with Putin). France has just totally upgraded its cyberdefense capabilities. (article)

At this stage the EU should scrap NATO and embargo the US.

And by hitting Russia, I’m talking Stuxnet the bastards. Take Russia offline completely….and keep hitting them until they’re back to the (digital) Bronze Age. In particular, target their banking and financial sectors.

re: #235 Anymouse 🌹

This was very insightful:

In an effort to relieve the pressure on steel prices created by China’s excess capacity, and its consequent dumping of steel on world markets, Ross persuaded the Chinese to agree to begin retiring that excess capacity. Ross hied to the Oval Office to inform his boss of his triumph. At which point Trump threw a fit and roared, “Tariffs, bring me tariffs.” There’s more. “Your understanding of trade is terrible. Your deals are no good.” And still more, “Wilbur has lost his step. Actually lost a lot of steps,” are among statements made by the president and reported by those in the room at the time.

Trump thinks trade imbalances are evil, and is willing to use tariffs even when they are not needed.

From the same article:

One economic study after George W. Bush imposed tariffs on steel in 2002 concluded that job losses in steel-consuming industries exceeded the number that would have been lost had the entire American steel industry gone out of business.

Right now all our area streets and roads are quagmires and the rest of the snow on the ground is going to make that worse when it melts. Then we get freezing rain to shellac it all, and maybe lose our power or Internet service.

A proposed law requiring presidential candidates to make their tax returns public in order to appear on Maryland’s ballot has advanced in the state Senate.

Senators gave the measure preliminary approval Thursday. The bill could receive final Senate approval next week, after which it would go to the House.

The bill requires presidential and vice presidential candidates to release their tax returns for the preceding five years. It was introduced after President Donald Trump bucked tradition and did not release his tax returns during his 2016 campaign.

Maryland could be the first state to enact such a requirement.

California and New Jersey passed similar bills, but they were vetoed.

Hawaii’s House and Senate passed proposals last year, but both bills died after Hawaii’s attorney general raised concerns about potential lawsuits.

Kinda puzzled. Who at State okays the delivery of 200+ offensive anti tank/personnel/low flying aircraft missiles (shoulder launched Javelin) to Ukraine? Escalating tensions with Russia at State and kowtowing at the WH.

Nearly four years after Russia’s initial incursion into Ukrainian territory and the shadow war that sparked off in Eastern Ukraine shortly after, the U.S. State Department cleared Ukraine to purchase FGM-148 Javelin advanced anti-tank missiles.

According to Defense News the $47M deal includes 210 Javelin missiles, 37 command launch units (CLU) and two spares, as well as training, logistics and support. This would be the first time the United States has agreed to provide advanced lethal weaponry to Ukraine since the conflict began.

Put this in context of Putin sabre rattling with doomsday weapons and naming us as the problem.

We are suborned in the WH and being steadily attacked in cyber, all with a abundant dash of cold war arms race. Putin wants to run the western world.

Not only that but conceal carry on campus. The students that would want to conceal carry are usually the exact same students you wouldn’t want to have a gun in the first place.

Yup. People who are obsessed with concealed carry are the people dying to be a “hero”. Gun fetishists stockpile and worship their weapons. They are just itching to use them. It runs through their veins and fantasize about using their weapons against a fellow citizen. They are NRA sycophants who buy into the “good guy” line. The gun culture is fucking sick and perverted.

I would. Kushner simply can’t do the job with only a secret clearance, and if he can’t get clearance, I don’t know how his wife can. I was kind of expecting Stephen Miller, but John Bolton would be even more awful.

Nevertheless, some young members of this new labor force brim with optimism. “We are living better now in the city,” says one 18-year-old line worker who sews pant hems for Indochine. (She asked that her name not be used.) She grew up 50 miles away with seven siblings on a 2.5-acre farm and now shares a room with another worker at a tin-roofed concrete apartment block on the outskirts of Hawassa. “In the countryside, we have no way to stay neat and clean. And we are getting experience,” she says, also speaking for her roommate. She hopes one day she can be self-employed as a tailor. Her monthly salary is $23.70, plus $7.30 for meals and, if she doesn’t miss a day of work, a $7.30 attendance bonus. She pays $9 a month for her share of the rent on her apartment, leaving her $29.30 if she gets her bonus. She spends about 50¢ a day on food and struggles to cover laundry soap and transportation to church. “The soap is expensive,” she says. Recently she missed a few days with a cold. She didn’t get her bonus and worries she’ll go into debt. Her room is illuminated by a single dangling lightbulb. She sleeps on the bare concrete, and the walls are almost naked, save for a banner that reads, “Whether my life is comfortable or uncomfortable, I still thank my God.”

Factbox - May sets out stance for new trade ties with EU

[…]

May stuck to her position that Britain and the EU should aim for a new kind of trade deal after Brexit. The EU’s existing agreements with Norway and Canada were unsuitable because they would hurt supply chains and make it hard to keep an open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, she said.

[…]

Any hard border or a customs border in the Irish sea, between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, which broke up the country’s national common market, was unacceptable, she said.

This still strikes me as similar to trying to be half-pregnant.

Crook or hack as he may be, Sec’y Ross isn’t stupid: that the main effect of the “Trump Tariff” is likely to simply be slightly-higher prices for manufactured goods using imported metals (and of that “ton” of steel used in making a car, the tariff will only apply to the imported portion) was something that could have been predicted well in advance. That these import taxes will - as the Orange Anus predicts - somehow spur a significant increase in domestic manufacturing and those JOBS! JOBS! $35,000 cars are typical? That’s twice my house, and nearly three times my car.

I’m doing poverty right I guess.

So I have my car serviced and they change the oil filter. Slap a 25% tariff on my oil filter. A new computer gets a 25% tariff on the steel parts in it.

This isn’t going to resurrect the steel industry, but in late-stage capitalism it will allow the rich to cash out.

The automakers will face choice to eat the higher cost (doubtful) or pass it on (more likely). Even if it’s several hundred dollars, it’s more than enough to overcome the supposed tax scam benefits to majority of Americans.

And that goes for all the other materials people buy - from canned goods to durable goods. It’s a hike that will dampen demand further.

Oh, and it’s a shot across the bow at Canada, not China or Russia.

That’s downright enemy action as once again Trump benefits our rivals and screws our allies.

Since we are already pretty close to full employment, I expect this tariff to not have much more effect than what the Fed is planning to do to check inflation anyway by raising interest rates. The tariff will not, of course, create jobs, but it does help keep the news cycle churning and gives pundits something to talk about besides the chaos in the White House.

Trump chose steel for symbolic reasons. It’s key to the America of 1950-1960, which he thinks we should become again. That’s what MAGA means, what ‘Take America Back’ means, that we become once again the industrial powerhouse, digging coal, making steel, building ships - these are literally the industries he and Bannon talked about. Why? They’re MANLY! Big, strong (and almost exclusively white) men, doing big dangerous jobs!

And for this vision of Days Of The Future Past, he wants to give up the actual future, in green energy, sustainability, information technology. He’s trying to re-create a mid 20th Century country in the 21st century. EVEN IF we could re-establish the steel mill economy of the 1950s in America, who’d buy our steel at the prices we’d have to charge?

May’s speech was still cake-and-eat-it, while handwaving away what the hell a “customs union but not THAT customs union” is supposed to mean in practice.

Northern Ireland is the problem that they won’t be able to avoid. The UK is committed to no hard border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. AND, the UK is committed to the common UK market, that is, between NI and the rest of the UK. So, there’s no border between the EU and NI, and there’s no border between NI and rest of UK. BUT, the UK is leaving the EU customs union somehow. Okay.

And the EU has said over and over again that it’s not interested in some sort of blob glommed on to the EU common market where goods from who-knows-where can mysteriously come and go according to the UK’s whims. Besides, this whole arrangement is supposed to be stood up, implemented, staffed, and operational in a little more than a year.

The UK is going to be very obviously staring into the abyss in a few months, and the only way out I can see is a “temporary” Norway-like arrangement where nothing essentially changes except the UK can’t vote on anything and gets kicked out of EU agencies. Then, everyone has to wait for someone in the UK to force the country back to its senses and go back in, minus a bunch of special privileges.

Over and over this comes up - we across the world are all intertwined with each other more intimately than ever, yet the demagogues completely ignore this.

The demagogues continually sell the “other” as the enemy, but in fact the entire modern world is tightly knit into one inter-dependent unit.

I’d like to quote from a German friend:

What British people often seem unaware of is that contrary to their fond illusions about their fairness, honesty and all-round decency, - they are not regarded that way at all by the rest of the world, but are instead seen as being devious, underhanded and untrustworthy. British people have a reputation for always saying the opposite of what they are really thinking, thus leaving the impression that they’re not sincere.

In Europe that impression has been reinforced by the way the Cameron and May governments have tried (and failed) to bully and to split the EU member states while continually reneging on previously made commitments.

Hard reality will hit very soon in the form of the ever professional Monsieur Barnier.

The man who fathered the child and ran away is certainly to blame, but the parent who raised her to dance on the pole (Chris Rock reference) bears even more blame IMHO.

Maybot inherited a terrible situation, which she has made incredibly worse through incompetence, bad judgment, cravenness and a total lack of states(wo)manship.

She may rank below Chamberlain in the Hall of Shame of British PMs.

The whole political situation in the UK is pretty much hopeless. May is a weak leader, and made a huge critical error in calling the election which made everything worse. She can’t tack right or left without blowing up the government. Not that Labour is any great shakes right now, where Corbyn is still gamely trying to sit on the fence on Brexit, chasing after the British equivalent of the sainted White Working Class.

All we need for more chaos is Her Majesty popping her clogs, so I expect that will happen in short order too.

The great error was the belief we had to stop communism everywhere, no matter the cost, or we’d lose all of Asia. The most LBJ should’ve done was help the South Vietnamese fight for themselves. I’m not sure that’s quite an accurate assessment: I think the blame goes both ways. As much as the military tried to cover their “political” bases wrt to dealing with LBJ over Vietnam, Johnson also placed a great deal of reliance on the Pentagon’s war-planning and war-making strategies to achieve a “win” - or at least he did until the Tet Offensive in 1968, after which the generals could only suggest deploying even MORE troops (more than the 500,000 [!!] already in-theater) as a “strategy”. Old Ho may not have been a “fanatic”, but he most definitely a Communist (had been for decades), and was firmly dedicated to establishing a Marxist-style state in Vietnam. Which wasn’t - and never has been - a bloodless process. Though had we (the US), supported his government in 1946 (rather than backing De Gaulle in his “re-colonization” scheme), Vietnam could have turned out to be the Asian Yugoslavia (Communist, but “unaligned” and reasonably “open”), and another twenty years of bloody war might have been avoided.

of course you would. you’re smart and self aware
we’re touching on two problems though - staffing is one. the other is understanding the mechanics of the position

i would argue that even a competent staff would not be enough to compensate

the presidency (and the cabinet and high level departmental posts) need more than business executive experience (managing people, executive decision making)

and it’s more than just legislative experience, though that helps

you’ve also got to know this system and these players

and we’re only touching on domestic policy and legislating. add in foreign policy, the military, etc and it’ll take more than 8 years to learn it all

Sen. Orrin Hatch calls Obamacare supporters ‘stupidest, dumbass people’

(CNN)Sen. Orrin Hatch says supporters of the Affordable Care Act are the “stupidest, dumbass” people he’s ever seen.
Speaking about the massive GOP tax overhaul at the American Enterprise Institute on Thursday, the Utah Republican took some time to blast the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
“(We) finally did away with the individual mandate tax that was established under that wonderful bill called Obamacare,” Hatch said. “Now, if you didn’t catch on, I was being very sarcastic. That was the stupidest, dumbass bill that I’ve ever seen.”
“Some of you may have loved it. If you do, you are one of the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met,” Hatch added. “There are a lot of them up there on Capitol Hill from time to time.”

He also described Obamacare as one of the most “regressive taxes” in the tax code, especially because lower-income families were “paying most of the freight.” He said it was one of the “great ironies” of Obamacare.

I know Hatch is resigning…but anyone feel like neither he nor the GOP will ever get any consequence for speaking of constituents and Americans this way? While calling racists and the like ‘deplorables’ is consistently treated as the point where Hillary proved she hated all of America and apple pie too?

Just…fuck all.

When I transferred from recruiting duty to Spain, I flew out of Philadelphia on the regularly scheduled MAC fight with my wife and son and about a thousand soldiers headed to Kuwait on an L-1011.

We ran into a horrendous storm over the Atlantic that was affecting Spain and Portugal and were sent to make a landing at the Azores instead.

The landing was like she described there in Washington - the pilot could not force the plane down on the runway until we were halfway down it, and he burnt out the brakes stopping it (we ended up on the runway apron).

When we got into the terminal there were a couple fighter pilots standing outside watching the activity (mechanics, fire department, &c). One said “that guy’s a helluva pilot.” The other said “Better him than me.”

We spent three days in the Azores waiting to get the brakes on the plane fixed.

Except for the part where construction prices go up (particularly in tenant improvements where framing is steel, door frames are steel or aluminum, ceiling grid is steel or aluminum, door hardware is steel or aluminum), and people decide not to move and build out new spaces. Which leads to fewer jobs, which leads to less money spent by consumers, which means business have to downsize, which means less occupancy in buildings, which means less income for building owners.

Trump was angry and ‘unglued’ when he started a trade war, officials say

According to two officials, Trump’s decision to launch a potential trade war was born out of anger at other simmering issues and the result of a broken internal process that has failed to deliver him consensus views that represent the best advice of his team.

On Wednesday evening, the president became “unglued,” in the words of one official familiar with the president’s state of mind.

While Delta can’t just uproot and move to a different airport (infrastructure takes time to build), I imagine they could uproot their corporate headquarters pretty quickly, and possibly distribute flights the way they used to be done (regional hubs) and take them out of Georgia if they really want to do that.

On the other hand, the tax break on fuel they lost they might consider to be simply not worth fighting over. While aviation fuel is pretty expensive, it’s not the only cost of operating an airline.

Jeff Bezos on the other hand might seriously consider scratching Georgia off his list. If he does, I hope he loudly announces Amazon doesn’t bow to conservative extortion.

Perhaps that assertion was true at one time, but for years now Prager has been milking the wingnut evangelicals.

Years ago when he was doing a radio show in LA, the one where he would host ministers of different monotheistic congregations, it was a time when he played a more balanced intermediary.

Trump won’t change his mind. It’s his decision. To change his mind is to either admit a) I might be wrong, or b) an underling manipulated me into a bad position.

Since he can’t admit either, he’ll blow off Scott Walker. In the meantime, the House and Senate GOP will follow right along as lemmings.

If the tariffs don’t work (just about guaranteed), the blame then shifts to a) conservatism can only be failed (and someone goes to the axe) or b) we were sabotaged by (liberals, other countries, “illegal aliens,” &c)

There’s no other president in history that would have gotten away with acting like he’s the host of a reality tv show, yet a large minority of the country are just fine with it and media is trying to normalize him as if that’s going to help.

Or, the tariffs will never be implemented and Trump will act like they were to save his (Mussolini) face.

If he does, I hope he loudly announces Amazon doesn’t bow to conservative extortion.

one thing im not clear on
they took a fuel tax break out of the bill
that’s on everybody right, not just delta?

Given that both Canada and Mexico account for significant amounts of the steel we import (while China supplies only about 2% of imported steel), and Canada provides us with something like half our imported aluminum, and also given that Congress has shown no great signs of agreeing with Trump that NAFTA is “the worst deal in history” or of wanting to back out of it, you have to wonder if this tariff stunt is just Trump’s braindead attempt to blow up NAFTA on his own.

Perhaps that assertion was true at one time, but for years now Prager has been milking the wingnut evangelicals.

Years ago when he was doing a radio show in LA, the one where he would host ministers of different monotheistic congregations, it was a time when he played a more balanced intermediary.

But since then he’s just gone right-wing.

His response to climatology is hilariously irrational for a guy who always pretended to be a champion of rationality.

I’m so old that I remember when Charles was a frequent guest on his show (back in the day when LFG was kinds right-wing)

DALLAS - A student called 911 claiming he was being followed and shot at near a Dallas middle school on Friday, authorities said.

Police responded to the call about a reported active shooter near the Comstock Middle School campus just before 12 p.m. A heavy police presence was visible from SKY4.

But officials later said that their investigation showed that no shots were ever fired near the school. They also could not find a gun or any evidence of a gun being fired, like casings.

Apology not accepted you old fart. Why don’t you just admit that is exactly what you wanted to say asshole.

The Hill - Hatch apologizes for ‘off-color’ comment about ‘dumbass’ ObamaCare supporters

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on Friday apologized for calling supporters of ObamaCare “the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met.”

“Yesterday, I made a poorly worded joke about Obamacare supporters — a joke that was not reflective of my actual feelings towards my friends on the other side,” Hatch said in a statement.

“Throughout my term of service, I have always recognized the importance of civility, particularly in engaging with those of different political perspectives,” he continued. “While I occasionally slip up, I believe that my legislative record reflects my commitment to bipartisanship and civility much more than my flippant, off-the-cuff comment.”

So we’ve rich folks in the GOP who think $1.50/wk “raise” is something to celebrate, $2000 “rebate” is enough to buy a car, and figure that people’s biggest worries in an era of trade war is the cost of soup.

Remember when Hillary was the one spun as “out of touch”?

That is a fallacy. Heritagecare never existed.

I know, I think I have the emails from the Heritage Foundation telling me so around here somewhere. They were only kicking around ideas, never meant to be serious legislation. That’s what they do you know; research policy.

In fact, they upon further study never endorsed it.

Write and ask them. You too can get the same documents if you are nice and act like you too are researching.

re: #713 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀

It’s like I said a while back - he has a really, really simpleminded view of the world. It was obvious in his announcement speech back in 2015, when he said,

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

“When Mexico sends its people”. Think about that. He sees ‘Mexico’ as a unit. Mexican government, Mexican people, Mexican companies, Mexican branches of American companies, Mexican drug cartels - it’s all one thing.

People immigrating from Mexico are CHOSEN BY Mexico to come here.

The trade deficit with Mexico is sitting in Mexico’s bank account, and they should use that to pay us for the Wall.

Mexico sends drugs here.

Any man who thinks in terms that simplistic will never grasp that the richest country has trade deficits because we’re the ones who have the money to buy everyone else’s shit.

But don’t worry. He’ll fix that. We won’t be the richest country, if he keeps up like this.

I bet that car stopped running a few feet after the video stops.

I remember a couple years back, coming home during a heavy rainstorm. Traffic was so slow on my usual route that I took a back road, not realizing 1) how high the creek would be running and 2) just how low the road is relative to that.

I did what they tell you never to do, and drove through a flooded patch. But I let a Honda Civic go through first.

We both made it, and there were no other flooded places, but in retrospect that was one of the STUPIDEST things I’ve ever done!
