Another $1 trillion was the spending bill.
It’s hard to keep up with all the debt they’re adding when in the midst of the greatest redistribution of wealth from everyone to the rich since the gilded age.

A bunch of right wing extremists are demanding the DOJ investigate Clinton, Comey, Sessions, McCabe, etc.
As if the past 8 investigations into Hillary has resulted in GOPers, including Gowdy, Chaffetz, and the rest of the right wing echo chamber to throw their hands up in the utter futility of finding wrongdoing because there isn’t any there no matter how many times they’ve tried - and despite having Hillary testify for 11 hours.
They’ve got nothing, but they’re intent on making a burger out of it.

Breitbart Gun Columnist Says Dick’s Should Have Donated Unsold Assault Rifles ‘To The Poor’
This morning, Breitbart deputy political editor Amanda House brought on Breitbart’s gun columnist AWR Hawkins to discuss Dick’s decision to destroy the firearms, which Hawkins said was “one of the best proofs ever that liberalism is a mental illness.” Hawkins explained that properly destroying and disposing of weapons was costly and tedious, and suggested that Dick’s instead give the unsold assault-style rifles to low-income communities.
“If this group wanted to do something that would make them look good, Dick’s, I said what they should have done is donated these guns to the poor and let the poor use these guns for self-defense,” Hawkins said. “But see, that’s how a conservative thinks.”
Hawkins theorized about a single mom living on the south side of Chicago who can “only afford a baseball bat” to protect her “six kids.”

I’m glad Colbert went after Comey a bit in that interview, and I like the way Colbert leads up to the questions (the bit about his wife was good), but I wish he’d questioned him a bit about why bringing up Weiner’s emails was ‘good’ while bringing up Trump’s Russian ties was ‘bad’. The interview didn’t make me any more of a fan of Comey. He’s still far too self-satisfied.

Very interesting interview. Colbert is an excellent interviewer. He kept on point, kept after weak points in Comey’s thoughts, and got more information out than any of the cretins on CNN or the other terrible talking head shows.
Comey was good when talking about things he knows he has good moral standing on, ie. the bad character and failings of the president. When talking about the Clinton stuff, part of him seems to know that he’s just trying to justify his own biases - like most people in the world, he just knows that Hillary Clinton is shady, so must be scrutinised far more closely than anyone else, even obvious criminals, in the same position. He came across as weak, dismissive, and sanctimonious.

In one of his now many interviews, I heard him say that he didn’t bring up Trump and Russia because it was so early and they didn’t have confirmed details that would allow him to make such a confirmation. Where in Hillary and Anthony Weiner’s emails they had facts to deal with.
The problem is he didn’t need to do either address to the nation regarding Hillary’s emails. He could have done a recommendation on Hillary’s emails to the Justice Department and let them decide what to do. And, he hadn’t yet looked into the Weiner computer to see the emails were duplicates of what they already had.
But he just had to throw his big ol’ feet into it all.

Milwaukee Civil Rights Icon Vel Phillips Dead at 94
Milwaukee civil rights leader Vel Phillips—whose life was marked by shattering glass ceilings and tireless activism—died Tuesday evening at the age of 94.
Phillips was a pioneer, a giant among her people, recognized for the work she did for civil and human rights across Milwaukee and Wisconsin as a whole, Fox6Now notes.
She was the first black woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin Law School back in 1951. In 1956 Phillips became the first woman and the first African American to sit on Milwaukee’s City Council and would remain alone in those accomplishments for years.

Hum, hum (clears throat)
Sorry to out-pedant you, but that would be *modern* Greek. We don’t know for sure how the “b” letter was pronounced in ancient Greek, but there are a few indications from literature: Aristophanes, for example, when writing down the sound of sheep, spells it “bê, bê”, which in modern Greek would read as “vee, vee”. Given how sheep actually sound, it was more probably pronounced “baa, baa”…
The phonetic evolution from “b” to “v” (and in reverse) is very common in the history of languages. See how “v” in Spanish is pronounced “b” as in “cuervos” (French “corbeau”).
Of course it doesn’t make the “Moron labe” crowd any less idiotic, or more knowledgeable about the realities of ancient Sparta…

No, Yertle, you won’t allow a vote because you’re scared shitless that one of two potential outcomes will happen: It fails on a party line vote and thus doom your party’s chances of retaining the Senate or it passes and Trump turns his ire on you.

When you already have $$$$ a tax cut means nothing to your lifestyle, financial status or anything else - but it does bring the opportunity to rant about why the country can’t afford a,b,c and d - thus making the poor even poorer. Fiscally and morally wrong and people still vote for them while the media still protects them.

So, Monday I went to the rental office to submit a maintenance request for my non-functioning A/C and the serious leak above my back door.
After hearing nothing, today I went to the complex maintenance web page & entered the request again. Check the little box that stated that if the problem (leak) wasn’t repaired soon it would likely damage the building of possessions (reasonably truthful).
Maybe 2 hrs later I got a knock at the door. (even though I requested they contact me before coming over) to address the leak. As I expected, got the “yeah, that’s gotta get fixed, in the long run. Said they’ll get with contractors who removed/replaced railing to see about patching.
As the Maint. guy was about to leave told him I also have the A/C problem request in. So, he decided to look at it. Determined problem was likely with the compressor outside, called an assist from another guy on staff, replaced capacitor, A/C running fine.
Hilarious thing happens during all this. Background, they just installed wrap around cedar railings/enclosures on all 1st floor units porches. So, as the first guy is checking the A/C initially, there’s this other guy tearing down the brand new railings a couple units down. Apparently someone decided that cutting off 1st floor residents access to the area along the river our porches face wasn’t a good rental aspect. After all the railings had been installed.
If we hadn’t been out there while the guy was removing the railings it could have been worse too. I stopped him from trying to hammer off a strut that was attached to the building with three bolts. Now that would have done some serious damage.

Yeah, there seems to be a disconnect between “Trump and Cohen did nothing illegal, there’s nothing there that amounts to a crime” and “Cohen would never turn on Trump!” If nothing illegal happened, then there’s nothing to turn against Trump. Turning on him implies that Cohen has evidence that Trump committed a crime or evidence that could be used to prove a crime. In either of those two cases, “attorney-client privilege” goes out the window as it cannot be used to cover up evidence of a crime.

I think the “logic” goes something like this:
1. Trump and Cohen did nothing illegal.
2. The Deep State made up/planted evidence.
3. They want to get Cohen in a dark room under a bright light to offer a false confession/false evidence of Trump wrong doing.
4. Cohen, like Trump, is too good of a man to fall for that.

re: #126 fern01
Economics would be my suggestion - removing taxes, killing all government programs
Point of Interest: The Nobel Prize for Economics isn’t a real Nobel Prize. Unlike all the other prizes it was not created by Alfred Nobel’s Last Will and Testament. It’s official name is the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel and it was created by conservative free market Swedish bankers in the 60’s trying to undermine government control of monetary policy.
So why does it exist? Notre Dame historian Philip Mirowski has found evidence that the economics award grew out of Swedish domestic politics. According to Mirowski, in the 1960s, the Bank of Sweden was trying to free itself from government oversight and become independent. One way to do that was to frame economics as purely scientific, rather than political — in which case, government interference could only hurt the bank. Having a Nobel Prize boosted economics’ scientific street cred. And Mirowski isn’t the only academic who is skeptical of whether there should be a Nobel-associated economics prize. Friedrich von Hayek, who won the award in 1974, used his Nobel Banquet speech to critique the prize.3 “The Nobel Prize confers on an individual an authority which in economics no man ought to possess,” Hayek said. He worried that the prize would influence journalists, the public and politicians to accept certain theories as gospel — and enshrine them in law — without understanding that those ideas have a different level of uncertainty than, say, gravity or the mechanics of a human knee.

Personally, my impression is that Trump hasn’t been the face of any business deal negotiated by his company in years. Either people have spoken with his lawyers or they’ve spoken with one of his spawn. If only because it’s made it easier for him to throw underlings to the wolves when the debt collectors drag his ass to court.

That’s also probably very true. There seemed to be enough stories floating around during the campaign that you couldn’t trust a fucking word he said in business for at least 20 years.

Sara Carter seems to be the source of the alternate narrative Republicans are pushing that somehow the “real collusion” was between the Russians, the Obama White House, and the Hillary campaign. She is on Hannity nearly every day, and used to work for Circa News, which is owned by Sinclair. Given the tinfoilhattery she’s pushing, and the company she keeps (Hannity), I’m surprised she hasn’t been discredited like Sharyl Atkisson.
The replies to that are batshit. The Conservatives who should be responsible to stop Trump since they caused him, are instead saying there’s no rule by law if Comey, Mueller, and the Democrats aren’t locked up. These people are dangerously insane.

re: #110 Targetpractice
Yeah, there seems to be a disconnect between “Trump and Cohen did nothing illegal, there’s nothing there that amounts to a crime” and “Cohen would never turn on Trump!” If nothing illegal happened, then there’s nothing to turn against Trump. Turning on him implies that Cohen has evidence that Trump committed a crime or evidence that could be used to prove a crime. In either of those two cases, “attorney-client privilege” goes out the window as it cannot be used to cover up evidence of a crime.
Make up your fucking minds!
Is Scaramucci sending a message to Cohen?
Maybe this is all meant as a reminder to Cohen, his lawyers and his friends, etc. about loyalty to The Don. In other words, we all expect you to keep yo’ mouth shut.
It also sends the message to Mueller and New York prosecutors; don’t expect our boy to say anything.
Not that it is going to scare anyone off, but playing heavy seems to be The Don’s way.
Been consuming a lot of Comey Media. Reading A Higher Loyalty. Immersing myself in Comey-ness.
I think above all things the man has a deep love for and loyalty to the FBI as an institution and for the men and women who work there. Everything he’s done needs to be seen through that lens first.
He thought he was protecting those things….he says that over and over. He was concerned about the public perception and reputation of the FBI.
What James Comey never understood was no matter what he did, no matter how he twisted norms to do “the right thing,” he could not protect the reputation of the FBI and the men and women that work there. Because once the right-wing media latches into a narrative they are going to eviscerate the “bad guy.” There are no words or actions that will change that. And they had latched into the stupid email server and there was no way to placate them. There was no way to protect the reputation of the FBI. If they and their followers decide something is true, nothing can swerve them.
I wish I could bold and highlight this: We cannot, cannot make decisions anywhere, ever, based on what the right wing media and their minions might think or do. Ever. Full stop.
So, I see Comey getting caught up in the court of public opinion. He still doesn’t understand he was never going to win.

Let me do it for you.
The default mindset for all of the powers that be in America - political, corporate, media - is that the opinions of middle and working class white people are always the most important. Even if they are wrong, they are right enough that they must be a major factor in all public statements and decisions. Political campaigns, media coverage, financial decisions, all operate from this basic tenet - middle class white people must be okay with what we are doing. If not, we must change it.
Comey felt the same way - millions of ‘Americans’ (ie. middle class white people like me) are going to be angry if Hillary Clinton wins, and then they’ll accuse the FBI of being complicit if we don’t publicly pander to their biases by making it look like we’re investigating her as hard as possible, whether there’s anything there or not. It didn’t hurt that he also had similar biases.
Unfortunately, in 2018, middle class white people in America have become evil monsters. They have become a cult, corrupted by their saturated media environment. But all of the powers that be in America continue to operate from the basic assumption that these people are always right, even when they are wrong.

Comey did indeed fuck up with his actions during October 2016 - with the Clinton letter and refusing to acknowledge that Trump was simultaneously also under investigation.
Whether that was part of the NY office fuckery or not is irrelevant at this point.
It was Comey’s bad judgment that helped get us to this point.

But there’s nobody who is as terrible a human being as Donald Trump is. The rest can at least behave like an adult in public. (Except maybe Louie Gohmert.) The rest are probably at least good to their own families.

Trump will act against Russia as soon as they very much deserve it?
That’s some word salad response that indicates no interest in acting against Russia at all.
His excuses are getting more bizarre as he goes.
And, isn’t this just his own way of drawing a line in the sand? One that can never be crossed by anything Russia does.
Though saying “very much deserve” is really putting some fire in it! *Wanker*

See how “v” in Spanish is pronounced “b” as in “cuervos” (French “corbeau”).Of course it doesn’t make the “Moron labe” crowd any less idiotic, or more knowledgeable about the realities of ancient Sparta…
End of pedantic digression, back to my regularly scheduled lurking… ;)
I’m way behind, but I’ll jump forward. I almost wrote the same thing before. According to every Greek text I’ve ever seen, μολὼν λαβέ should be pronounced mo-lawn luh-béh, with a pitch accent on the last syllable.
Of course, the Spartans spoke Broad Doric, but I don’t think any distinctive features of that, like turning η into long α apply here.
Now returning to catching up with the thread….
re: #280 lawhawk
I’d call it kayfabe.
But the principle holds.
Trump telegraphed he was going to act more than a week before.
Russia moved their fleet of ships out of Syrian port days before.
The raid came on a predictable day/time.
Russia likely tipped off Syria so that no one was in the targeted buildings at the time.
Churning rubble isn’t success. Assad’s key people were safe and sound elsewhere.
Russia did what they usually do - help Assad get the compromising evidence out of the area and block investigators just long enough to sanitize things.
Trump played along with all this.
But you know what makes a lot of this tough to deal with. The U.S. can very much be said to have done similar, if not worse, with how we entered into the Iraq war. And how that started a lot of what is still going on.
To much of the world and to many here in the USA, we don’t have legs to stand on. And the Russians know it.
Remember The Don saying in that one interview with O’Reilly “what, you think our country is so innocent.”
Almost pre-excusing from the campaign trail. We should have seen this coming.

When they gave one to Paul Krugman they lost the plot on undermining government control of monetary policy. He knows how economies should work.
Few others I remember including Friedman spread much nonsense still causing grief today.

Look, Pence, Paul Ryan, or any of the current Republicans in Congress would be amazingly awful as President. Any of them would be one of the worst, most regressive, most blatantly corrupt Presidents the US has ever had.
But there’s nobody who is as terrible a human being as Donald Trump is. The rest can at least behave like an adult in public. (Except maybe Louie Gohmert.) The rest are probably at least good to their own families.
The fact that millions of Americans believe Donald Trump is a paragon is a testament to the power of cult media, and also a stain that America can never erase.
This is exactly what I have in mind when I refer to Trump as a corrupt piece of shit.
Idiots have been president, war criminals have been president, and there have even been a few good ones along the way.
Trump is the one and only piece of shit among US presidents. He’s white collar scum of the earth.
