Free “tipsy tow” services will be available Friday during California’s first 4/20 cannabis day with legalized recreational marijuana, according to AAA.
Services will be available from 4:20 p.m. Friday to 4:20 a.m. Saturday. Tow trucks will provide a free ride home and a vehicle tow up to 10 miles. A standard towing rate will apply to any longer distance.
AAA officials said people do not have to be AAA members to use the service and anyone can call (800) AAA-HELP and say they need a “tipsy tow.”

Lubbock High Students Stage Walkout to Protest Gun Violence
LUBBOCK, TX - Students at Lubbock High School walked out of class starting around 10:00 a.m. Friday as a protest against gun violence.
According to news accounts, students nationwide were planning to participate on Friday, which is the anniversary of the deadly school shooting at Columbine High School.
A social media post on Thursday said, “Walk out of class, grab your signs, and meet … at 10 am.”

“Hungary is a thousand years old. Its people have a DNA all their own. They belong to a unique and storied nation of 10 million with its own language, religion, history, heroes, culture and identity.
Though a small nation, two-thirds of whose lands were torn away after World War I, Hungarians wish to remain and endure as who they are.
They don’t want open borders. They don’t want mass migrations to change Hungary into something new. They don’t want to become a minority in their own country. And they have used democratic means to elect autocratic men who will put the Hungarian nation first.”
If that is what they want, then they should not be part of Europe, they should be defending their own little territory without any aid from NATO or the EU.

Kneel for the National Anthem: How dare you!
Suggest hanging women who get abortions should be hanged: Hey respect his opinions
From that Williamson piece:
Let’s not equivocate: Abortion isn’t littering or securities fraud or driving 57 in a 55-mph zone. If it isn’t homicide, then it’s no more morally significant than getting a tooth pulled. If it isn’t homicide, then there’s no real argument for prohibiting it. If it is homicide, then we need to discuss more seriously what should be done to put an end to it. For all the chatter today about diversity of viewpoint and the need for open discourse, there aren’t very many people on the pro-choice side, in my experience, who are ready to talk candidly about the reality of abortion.
The funny bit is, I’m not sure many on the pro-life side are ready to talk candidly about the reality of abortion… that being that 98% happen pre-viability, and 89% happen in the first trimester.
Also, I find this interesting as well:
I’m an unassimilated conservative from Lubbock, Texas. Much of my career for the past 20-odd years has consisted of writing pieces that tell people things they don’t want to hear. My angry critics on the left think I’m a right-wing monster; my angry critics on the right don’t like the fact that I’ve reported extensively from Trump country and haven’t thought very highly of what I’ve seen. If I’d been hired for a new job at some conservative outlet, you can be sure there would have been talk about how I pray each night for the death of the white working class.
Maybe instead of being “unassimilated” he should take the time to listen and learn from people not like him. But then he might be forced to confront how some of his views are at odds with reality.

In more frieghtening news, I give you the Yellowstone super volcano:
Yellowstone is capable of eruptions thousands of times more violent than the Mount St. Helens eruption of 1980. The northern Rockies would be buried in multiple feet of ash. Ash would rain on almost everyone in the United States. It’d be a bad day. Thus geologists are eager to understand what, exactly, is happening below all those volcano-fueled hot springs and geysers.
“It’d be a bad day” feels like the understatement of the known history of man.
On the bright side, we have no idea if it might actually erupt (yay?)
Obviously they would like to know if and when Yellowstone will blow again, and with what level of explosiveness. A major eruption would be a low-probability, high-consequence event, a proverbial Black Swan, something that could have societal and planetary effects. The problem for scientists is that these big “supervolcano” eruptions rarely happen, and the most important action is out of sight, many miles below the surface, involving chaotic forces, complex chemistry and enigmatic geological features.

You should make a comma you can stick to it for another picture.
I’m seeing other old farts my age saying that instead of walkouts on the anniversary of Columbine (today), kids should stay in school and learn civics and wait until they’re older to try and make a difference. And I thought…
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action.

Here’s a quote from the local paper, the Albany Times-Union:
Federal prosecutors said Mack was arrested in New York City and is scheduled to be arraigned before a U.S. magistrate judge in Brooklyn on Friday afternoon. Raniere has been held in custody without bond since his arrest last month and will be arraigned on the indictment at a later date, they said.
The indictment, which was filed Thursday and unsealed on Friday, charges both Raniere and Mack with multiple counts of sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit forced labor. They face a potential minimum sentence of 15 years in prison if convicted.

Not only that, Williamson and the rest of the anti-abortion brigade don’t have a good understanding of reproductive biology. In addition to the sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor charges against cult leader Keith “Vanguard” Rainere and his buddy Allison Mack
An appellate court in Texas (I assume it’s the Fifth Circuit, but journalists never get detailed enough for me) told Rainere he had to pay $444,000 in legal costs to AT&T and Microsoft because he lied about having patents on marketing teleconferencing services.
It’s unclear if Raniere has financial assets to pay the penalty in the civil case. The Justice Department said that for the past 18 months Raniere had been using a credit card and bank account in the name of a former NXIVM associate and girlfriend, Pamela Cafritz, who died in November 2016.

I have been doing an unhealthy quantity of reading about Hitler since I got home, and one of the things that stands out is how the men around him were confident there was a deep meaning to the shit he said and did.
There wasn’t, ninety-nine times out of a hundred. But people were intoxicated, by the man, by the possibilities of their new power, and therefore kept putting up with his insane hateful manbaby behavior and making excuses for his massive fuckups.
This is a thing people do in general—a form of pattern-recognition error plus ego-involved re-commitment that it has to mean something, I’ve staked myself to this—but the shithouse rat craziness is when it’s powerful people driven by thirst and vanity .

Important point regarding NK - their new declaration saying they’ll close their test site basically seems more like they’ve done what they needed to do - once you have something that works, you don’t keep testing it.
But note the fourth point - they’re now a nuclear state that promises no first use without nuclear provocation. They’re not giving it up. ‘Denuclearization’ does NOT mean they’re giving up their nukes or missiles. Just that they won’t test any more, because they don’t need to.
Here’s KCNA with six points from Kim Jong-un. The Punggye-ri test site will close *because* North Korea feels it has conducted sufficient testing and is happy with its weapons. That’s important context here. pic.twitter.com/uRlu30LG2O

OT A little while ago I recommended a website for looking up those pesky callers. Find out who calls you was the name of the site. Please do not go there because my brand new MacBook Air picked up some &^%$ malware. It looks like a cleaner for Mac and it autoloads every time you start up. This *&^ claims to be MacAffee with a toll-free number. The phone number starts with 801. To my knowledge that is not toll-free. I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow to get rid of this *&^%% malware.

All of their tests have been failures. The first was perfectly consistent with nothing happening at all, just the HE going off. The second was a few hundred tons, like a single-point failure of a two-point air lens primary. The third supposedly got up to 6-8 kilotons and they seem to be stuck at that—remember at 12 kilotons, India’s first test was so disappointing they gave up on the whole idea for 25 years.
We know how much plutonium NK could have possibly cooked in their little experimental reactor, and they’ve used up close to, if not more than, half at this point. If they have more than we think, that’s bad for them because that means they cooked it too long—which FWIW is my diagnosis for why their bombs don’t work.
We have no idea how much these experimental devices weigh, except that it’s a certain thing they have no way to deliver them anywhere but maybe South Korea. Getting people in a swivet about North Korean nukes is just irresponsible sensationalism. South Africa had a more credible deterrent than that.

That may have bee true a couple years ago. It’s not true now.
Their last test was estimated by multiple international agencies as about 70-280 kt, so they’re WAY beyond 6-8 kt. Indeed, their last 3 detonations have all been higher than 6-8 kt. Not sure about miniaturization, but they also tested missiles that could reach the continental US.
Testing is provocative, so there’s a balance between demonstrating you now have a credible deterrent and appearing to pose a significant first strike threat that would elicit a preventive attack. Once you demonstrate that 1) you can reach your opponent, and 2) you can inflict significant damage, you’ve established the former, further testing only pushes you toward the latter.

This also happened regarding student marches in the Dallas area:
On the 19th anniversary of the Columbine massacre in Colorado, many students chose to set aside their fear of now-common school shootings to raise their voices against what they see as political inaction on meaningful gun control.
Some faced pushback. That included armed men in Frisco and threats against a high school in Keller.
…
At Heritage High School in Frisco, students learned a lesson about Texas gun laws during Friday’s school walkout.Students had gathered in the school’s gym for a rally and then a few headed toward a nearby park to continue their protest beyond the 30 minutes allotted by the school district.
That’s when a few men were spotted carrying long guns slung across their shoulders just off campus. Student organizers said in a tweet that the men were protesting the walkouts “and did not appear to be planning anything” and were more than 500 feet from the campus.

“70-280”? That’s a helluva range. I remember them claiming they tested a two-stage device, but the yield was still ~6 kT. Now testing a two-stage device with instrumentation where the secondary should be is perfectly standard practice, but it’s an easy thing to claim—a hard thing to prove.
Even if they do have a real two-stage warhead, all that’s going to do is make it heavier. A lot heavier. We have no idea what the throw weight of these missiles they’re testing is supposed to be, but the one thing we can be sure of is that these not-even-intermediate-range test flights were carrying no appreciable payload.

Jazz was the original moral panic. The defining feature of jazz is that a note is allowed to change pitch during its length, and this was going to somehow lead to the downfall of western civilization, with people fucking in the streets like animals… No, I don’t get it, either.

Yield was estimated by multiple international organizations based on seismic activity detected at considerable distance, not what NK claimed. IOW, they lit off a fairly serious nuke, probably around 150 kt.

Actually, we have no idea of the payload weight, and if you can go UP 2800 miles, you can go OUT about 8000 miles. That puts the entire continental US within range.

“Polite society” regarded jazz as “black people’s” music (they would have used a different term, probably), and therefore scandalous. Nothing a proper lady or gentleman would listen to, and of course they would never go to a jazz club!
Then came the Roaring ’20s.
“Polite society” regarded rock ‘n’ roll the same way in the 1950s.
And so it goes
