Trump did not pop out of a vacuum like some subatomic particle pair.

Trump is part of an expression of a deep problem in our society, where religion and authoritarianism is being welded into a single force for atavism.

That’s my worry. We had systematic problems before Trump and he’s created new ones. You know what I worry about? Something similiar happen. We get a successful center-left President like Obama again and because he’s not perfect enough for the purer than thou, they have a tantrum and someone like Trump does this again in 2028. My take is that our society is now so successfully fragmented into different spheres-of-information that the “cable news” is really about narrow-casting to very tightly defined audiences.

This is not journalism in the sense that we understood journalism during the heyday of TV network news.

Rather, these “cable news” outlets are about highly targeted marketing projects, where advertisers are attempting to match up to their most-likely customers.

Sure, there may be a specific program here or there - such as Maddow - which can do good work.

But on the whole, cable networks are like the old advertising fliers we’d get packed into our newspapers, back when we got such things.

I agree with ckkatz’s list with one exception: Unless you have a deep interest in naval aviation, scratch Virginia Beach off the list. I recall its beach as being one of the ugliest in the continental US, and if you do decide to stop there, don’t book a room near the top of the hotel, as the naval jets will sound like tornadoes going overhead.

Once you’re in NC, if you like barbecue, I’d detour a little from the coast to the Rocky Mount area, a mecca for eastern-NC style BBQ. I wish I could send you to the great Melton’s, but it was wiped out years ago in Hurricane Floyd. Even so, you can’t go very wrong here. When you smell the hickory smoke and you’re hungry, pull in. Keep in mind this is eastern NC. Don’t look for gooey red sweet/sour sauce. Eastern BBQ is mainly about vinegar and peppers.

I am glad that someone spoke up on the merits of the North Carolina bbq. I, regrettably, lack the expertise to do it justice.

Also, it is very true that the Virginia Beach/Hampton/Newport News area can be noisy and very congested due to the constricted geography. Another naval history point (I believe) is that the Monitor-Merrimack battles occurred in the area.

The “systemic issues” will not be really addressed until we can convince enough Americans that the Constitution is not a magic document inspired by some god.

The Constitution has some deep flaws which were brought to light very early in our country’s history, then again in the time of the Civil War, and now again in the era of corporate-friendly, religiously-fuel atavism.

We need to fix the Constitution and the government it outlines.

We simply can not continue to allow fictitious persons (corporations) to be treated as equal to humans.

We also have to remove the profit-motive from elections.

And we need more checks on Executive malfeasance.

And finally, or perhaps firstly, we need to have a truly representative government.

He’s not match or complementing his wife.

Her dress is intentionally an echo of earlier centuries, with frills, the color, and the pattern. The only thing that is really post-19th century is the sleeveless nature. Thus it is an intentional blending of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

His threads, though, are very blase, as if they’re straight out of the Men’s Wearhouse back rack, for bog-standard two-piece formal wear.

Instead, Jared needs to also blend different eras. He should also echo his wife’s colors, or complement them.

There is no doubt a deep frustration felt by some who are, frankly, not very educated, when they are confronted with the 21st century, which so far has been the “information era”.

So they lash out.

I used to despise them, but finally decided I was wrong to do that. Currently I reserve my spite for the immoral who know better (e.g., Trump, Steve King, and the rest).

The late night “comedy” shows are much more informative and interesting than most of what’s on cable news these days.

They are, and good for the networks for allowing them to be so. This is a corporate decision that makes them money and keeps us informed. This may be why they are doing so.

By putting the hammer to the slow-motion disaster that is threatening our democracy through the lens of late-night vs. the lens of traditional news reporting (which is The Evil MSM and Fake News, after all), it allows the networks to broadcast the truth in the news lens and avoid being labelled as “biased” by Faux News and the other gaspers, by putting commentary on late-night.

It’s actually a damn smart move by the Networks. And the late-night hosts, who are really smart people, are fully capable of giving as good as they get in regard to the shade thrown by the gaspers. They have been brilliant against the Conservative counterforce.

Car buyers these days love SUVs. They don’t, however, love actual cars like hatchbacks and sedans —as Ford has learned.

Ford (F) said on Wednesday the only passenger car models it plans to keep on the market in North America will be the Mustang and the upcoming Ford Focus Active, a crossover-like hatchback that’s slated to debut in 2019.

That means the Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and the regular Focus will disappear in the United States and Canada.

Ford will, however, continue to offer its full gamut of trucks, SUVs and crossovers.

By 2020, “almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles,” the press release says.

When the Trump administration got with the car manufacturers and started rolling back fuel efficiency standards, we said we’d buy foreign. But I noticed that Toyota was one of the companies that participated in those discussions.

I went to go look up the Focus Active, and noticed that in Europe, they offer a Fiesta Active. I wish I could get one of those.

On the whole frilly dress discussion: All three examples up above are kind of old-fashioned-looking, but what’s really wrong about them all is that the waist is way too low—something like that with radically different textures top and bottom, really needs to be an Empire style. IMO.

It’s the market. Small cars sell overseas better than here. I’m surprised about Canada, though.

Here’s the biggest issue with this, they won’t build brand loyalty. Start 20 year olds with a Focus and when they’re 30 they get a Taurus (or what have you, the family car) and at 50 a Lincoln.

The team was able to predict partisan users with nearly 80 percent accuracy and gatekeepers with 70 percent accuracy based on their tweets and network.

Sigh, time for my lament…everything I need close is in my hotel room & car. I don’t think it will all fit in the car at once. My storage unit it packed to the gills, I haven’t seen it, but packing Co took my desk (basically a kind of antique table where you cant/didn’t remove the legs) and my sofa to their own storage.

Will have to hire people to help pack 10’ uhaul & sort the boxes, leaving stuff behind. obviously everything was packed, I didn’t have the time to whittle down my possessions.

In other news I met a family here at the Marriott residence who’ve been here 8 MONTHS. Fire. So shut up complainer.

I can understand why Ford is looking at something like this, because the margins on cars tend to be much thinner than on trucks and SUVs, which still command a premium, new or used. But, this from the last paragraph of the CNN story:

And it’s not just Ford. Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) did away with the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 more than a year ago. And General Motors (GM) decided to scale back production of the Chevy Cruze, Chevy Impala, Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac ATS and CTS.

That said, I think it’ll be a huge short-sighted mistake for Ford (as well as for GM and FCA); not everyone wants, needs, or can afford mommyvans and Canyoneros. I just bought a pre-owned 2016 Nissan Sentra, loaded with only 1900 miles on the clock, for about $16000 last month; a similarly-equipped SUV/crossover would have easily cost me at least $5000-6000 more, way out of my budget.

Since I’m a little bit of a car nut, an eccentric one at that, my buying decisions may not be relevant to anyone else’s situation. That out of the way, I have bought just one new car in the last 30 years, a 2014 Toyota Avalon that I still have. I actually drive my 2004 Dodge Caravan, now named Caravan of Destruction in Trump’s honor, more often, and I’ve thought about selling the Toyota. The Caravan did indeed go over 200,000 miles last week and is still going strong. Far down on the mileage list but probably tops on cab time is my 1977 Ford F-350. I use this on the farm and spend a lot of time in it at either low or no speed. Besides carrying lot of stuff, it is a handy portable office and power source. It has about 96000 actual miles and is still going strong.

I’m still toying with the idea of a Tesla but my compulsive cheapness and other priorities keep getting in the way.

Mrs. Fish acquired - by means of her dad having one which he gifted to us - a 1997 Lincoln Town Car. For most non-car-nuts that may not mean much, but you probably know that the Town Cars of that era were built on the Ford Crown Victoria platform, also known as the Indestructible Cop Car of the 1990’s. It is sitting somewhere in the neighborhood of 205k miles at the moment, and aside from an A/C issue that I need to get resolved soon and a driver’s side window that doesn’t work, it shows no signs of stopping any time soon (although it may fall apart from rust consumption before it dies). The damn thing is practically bulletproof, and I’m hoping it can carry her through the next couple of years until my car is paid off and I can turn the savings from not having a car payment to invest in a new vehicle for her.

Since I’m a little bit of a car nut, an eccentric one at that, my buying decisions may not be relevant to anyone else’s situation. That out of the way, I have bought just one new car in the last 30 years, a 2014 Toyota Avalon that I still have. I actually drive my 2004 Dodge Caravan, now named Caravan of Destruction in Trump’s honor, more often, and I’ve thought about selling the Toyota. The Caravan did indeed go over 200,000 miles last week and is still going strong. Far down on the mileage list but probably tops on cab time is my 1977 Ford F-350. I use this on the farm and spend a lot of time in it at either low or no speed. Besides carrying lot of stuff, it is a handy portable office and power source. It has about 96000 actual miles and is still going strong.

I’m still toying with the idea of a Tesla but my compulsive cheapness and other priorities keep getting in the way.

Gillibrand is introducing a bill to allow banking at Post Offices:

“It is really an elegant solution,” said Gillibrand, who emphasized that benefits to the postal system, though significant, were a secondary consideration. “You have a system that already works. And you have the ability to let the unbanked have banking in a way that’s affordable.”

If you’re looking to go electric, look at the Chevy Bolt. I got one in October. It’s a fantastic car and the range is decent: 238 miles on a full battery on average. With the warmer weather, I’m actually closer to 260 this week.

I agree that the Democratic candidates should not make impeachment the main focus of their campaign. One of Hillary’s downfalls, in retrospect, was not taking Trump seriously as a candidate and focusing extensively on how unfit he was to be President, rather than promoting her own platform. You can hardly blame her, because this kind of candidate getting so far in the process was unheard of, and she, by contrast was very focused and serious and eminently qualified. But what she didn’t read was that enough people were becoming willing to overlook the many troubling aspects of his character and give him a chance. Democrats will win big in November if they show they are a clear and positive alternative to Republicans. I fear if they promise to vote to impeach Trump, they may alienate voters who might otherwise be willing to support them.
