Great Interview: Seth Meyers w/ Sarah Kendzior, on the Systemic Issues That Will Outlast Trump

Politics • Views: 36,038

YouTube

Writer Sarah Kendzior talks about studying dictators for her PhD, why she loves complaining and the systemic problems that will still exist once Trump is out of office.

In the Trump era, Sarah Kendzior has been one of the most prescient and accurate writers and prognosticators about our benighted political hellscape. Here she is with Seth Meyers discussing her PhD background in studying authoritarianism, and making appropriately pessimistic predictions about the coming days of the Trump Horror.

Very good.

Trump did not pop out of a vacuum like some subatomic particle pair.

Trump is part of an expression of a deep problem in our society, where religion and authoritarianism is being welded into a single force for atavism.

That’s my worry. We had systematic problems before Trump and he’s created new ones. You know what I worry about? Something similiar happen. We get a successful center-left President like Obama again and because he’s not perfect enough for the purer than thou, they have a tantrum and someone like Trump does this again in 2028. I geuss, one step at a time.

re: #4 Charles Johnson

My take is that our society is now so successfully fragmented into different spheres-of-information that the “cable news” is really about narrow-casting to very tightly defined audiences.

This is not journalism in the sense that we understood journalism during the heyday of TV network news.

Rather, these “cable news” outlets are about highly targeted marketing projects, where advertisers are attempting to match up to their most-likely customers.

Sure, there may be a specific program here or there - such as Maddow - which can do good work.

But on the whole, cable networks are like the old advertising fliers we’d get packed into our newspapers, back when we got such things.

From the previous thread:

re: #126 whitebeach

I agree with ckkatz’s list with one exception: Unless you have a deep interest in naval aviation, scratch Virginia Beach off the list. I recall its beach as being one of the ugliest in the continental US, and if you do decide to stop there, don’t book a room near the top of the hotel, as the naval jets will sound like tornadoes going overhead.

Once you’re in NC, if you like barbecue, I’d detour a little from the coast to the Rocky Mount area, a mecca for eastern-NC style BBQ. I wish I could send you to the great Melton’s, but it was wiped out years ago in Hurricane Floyd. Even so, you can’t go very wrong here. When you smell the hickory smoke and you’re hungry, pull in. Keep in mind this is eastern NC. Don’t look for gooey red sweet/sour sauce. Eastern BBQ is mainly about vinegar and peppers.

Enjoy your trip.

I am glad that someone spoke up on the merits of the North Carolina bbq. I, regrettably, lack the expertise to do it justice.

Also, it is very true that the Virginia Beach/Hampton/Newport News area can be noisy and very congested due to the constricted geography. Another naval history point (I believe) is that the Monitor-Merrimack battles occurred in the area.

Here are what I came up with:
Virginia
- Jamestown
- Richmond-Petersburg (2 hour drive inland)

This area can be very congested due to how geographically constricted it is:
- Colonial Williamsburg
- Yorktown
- Virginia Beach
- Newport News
- Hampton
Monitor vs Merrimack
- Norfolk
Great Dismal Swamp
(Officially the northernmost Alligators are just south of the swamp, in Merchants Millpond, North Carolina. But…)

North Carolina
Outer Banks
- Kitty Hawk
- Roanoke-Croatan colony
- Edward Teach/Blackbeard at Ocracoke
- The local North Carolina dialects (such as High Tiders and, further south Lumbee) are fading as the area is no longer isolated. But linguists love to talk about them.

Now off to Dulles to pick up my lady. Who is returning from a chaplain’s conference in New Orleans.

Says Who Cohen says he will plead the Fifth.

washingtonpost.com

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen on Wednesday told a federal judge that he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself in a lawsuit brought by adult entertainer Stormy Daniels.

Cohen’s declaration, in support of his request to pause proceedings in the civil case, cited an “ongoing criminal investigation by the FBI and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.”

The “systemic issues” will not be really addressed until we can convince enough Americans that the Constitution is not a magic document inspired by some god.

The Constitution has some deep flaws which were brought to light very early in our country’s history, then again in the time of the Civil War, and now again in the era of corporate-friendly, religiously-fuel atavism.

We need to fix the Constitution and the government it outlines.

We simply can not continue to allow fictitious persons (corporations) to be treated as equal to humans.

We also have to remove the profit-motive from elections.

And we need more checks on Executive malfeasance.

And finally, or perhaps firstly, we need to have a truly representative government.

If I were a fashionista, I think I’d point out that the real problem is with Jared.

He’s not match or complementing his wife.

Her dress is intentionally an echo of earlier centuries, with frills, the color, and the pattern. The only thing that is really post-19th century is the sleeveless nature. Thus it is an intentional blending of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

His threads, though, are very blase, as if they’re straight out of the Men’s Wearhouse back rack, for bog-standard two-piece formal wear.

Instead, Jared needs to also blend different eras. He should also echo his wife’s colors, or complement them.

Amazing, isn’t it?

There is no doubt a deep frustration felt by some who are, frankly, not very educated, when they are confronted with the 21st century, which so far has been the “information era”.

So they lash out.

I used to despise them, but finally decided I was wrong to do that. Currently I reserve my spite for the immoral who know better (e.g., Trump, Steve King, and the rest).

Still, I don’t think we should give the ranting fools a pass. It takes a lot of work, but if enough people together keep working on building knowledge and educating others, then the society can keep moving forward, tiny bit by tiny bit.

The purpose is simple. Get Z list celebrities if you can even call them that to cry about how unfair Facebook is ot conservatives. Facebook definitely doesn’t censor conservatievs. You know how I know that because I have to see right wing crap in my TL all the time from my uninformed conservative friends.

Remember, Congressional hearings are not about actual investigations.

Hearings are public so soundbites can be recorded, to send to constituents to ask for money and reelection.

Diamond and Silk are tokens that racist conservatives trot out as their “black friends.”

I must say I am not surprised to see Trump aligning with the Kardashian Empire, though I am still a little fuzzy about what exactly Kardashians are.

For all y’all wondering about Kanye, look up when he was last spotted at Trump tower. It was right after he had a breakdown because he needed a big time cash infusion. He was begging some guy on Twitter for money and it got out of hand. Then like a week later, he’s in NY taking pics in front of the elevator at Trump tower.

He killed Lester in the WS too :). He hits lefties very well. That’s the one thing I have in common with Arodis Chapman and Jon Lester. We’ve both allowed hits to Brandon except my fastball isn’t nearly as fast as Arodis’ and I don’t have Lester’s repertoire. I can pitch sidearm though!

re: #4 Charles Johnson

The late night “comedy” shows are much more informative and interesting than most of what’s on cable news these days.

They are, and good for the networks for allowing them to be so. This is a corporate decision that makes them money and keeps us informed. This may be why they are doing so.

By putting the hammer to the slow-motion disaster that is threatening our democracy through the lens of late-night vs. the lens of traditional news reporting (which is The Evil MSM and Fake News, after all), it allows the networks to broadcast the truth in the news lens and avoid being labelled as “biased” by Faux News and the other gaspers, by putting commentary on late-night.

It’s actually a damn smart move by the Networks. And the late-night hosts, who are really smart people, are fully capable of giving as good as they get in regard to the shade thrown by the gaspers. They have been brilliant against the Conservative counterforce.

There is ample evidence that the Rs have happily assisted Drumpf in his assfucking of the American people. That is a winning strategy for gaining shitloads of seats at the table this fall. Federal, state, and local.

A President Hillary Clinton wouldn’t have called kneeling Black NFL players “sons of bitches” or encouraged ESPN to fire Jemiele Hill for her political commentary. Elections have consequences. Sitting out elections isn’t an option.

Is it the same color? I actually think the dress’s shape is kind of cute on both of them, but that pink on Ivanka just doesn’t work so well.

Millie Bobby Brown wore it in white—Kirsten Dunst (unfortunately for her and all who saw her) wore it in the pepto pink that Ivanka chose. I think, whichever color—it is a cute dress for a young teenager and that’s about it.

Car buyers these days love SUVs. They don’t, however, love actual cars like hatchbacks and sedans —as Ford has learned.

Ford (F) said on Wednesday the only passenger car models it plans to keep on the market in North America will be the Mustang and the upcoming Ford Focus Active, a crossover-like hatchback that’s slated to debut in 2019.

That means the Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and the regular Focus will disappear in the United States and Canada.

Ford will, however, continue to offer its full gamut of trucks, SUVs and crossovers.

By 2020, “almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, utilities and commercial vehicles,” the press release says.

When the Trump administration got with the car manufacturers and started rolling back fuel efficiency standards, we said we’d buy foreign. But I noticed that Toyota was one of the companies that participated in those discussions.

I went to go look up the Focus Active, and noticed that in Europe, they offer a Fiesta Active. I wish I could get one of those.

On the whole frilly dress discussion: All three examples up above are kind of old-fashioned-looking, but what’s really wrong about them all is that the waist is way too low—something like that with radically different textures top and bottom, really needs to be an Empire style. IMO.

It’s the market. Small cars sell overseas better than here. I’m surprised about Canada, though.

Here’s the biggest issue with this, they won’t build brand loyalty. Start 20 year olds with a Focus and when they’re 30 they get a Taurus (or what have you, the family car) and at 50 a Lincoln.

Researchers at Aalto University in Finland recently examined more than 2.7 billion tweets posted between 2009 and 2016, and found that Twitter users are exposed mainly to political opinions that agree with their own. The results indicate a strong correlation between biases in the content people both produce and consume, leading the researchers to conclude that echo chambers are very real on Twitter. Said Aalto’s Aristedes Gionis, “An echo chamber exists if the leaning of the content received by Twitter users is in par with the leaning of the content they share.” The study identifies three main roles for Twitter users: partisan users who both consume and produce content with a one-sided leaning; gatekeepers, who have a central role in the formation of echo chambers; and bipartisan users who produce content with both leanings and try to bridge echo chambers. The researchers developed machine learning algorithms to predict the roles of users in several data sets. The team was able to predict partisan users with nearly 80 percent accuracy and gatekeepers with 70 percent accuracy based on their tweets and network.

I can understand why Ford is looking at something like this, because the margins on cars tend to be much thinner than on trucks and SUVs, which still command a premium, new or used. But, this from the last paragraph of the CNN story:

And it’s not just Ford. Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) did away with the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 more than a year ago. And General Motors (GM) decided to scale back production of the Chevy Cruze, Chevy Impala, Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac ATS and CTS.

That said, I think it’ll be a huge short-sighted mistake for Ford (as well as for GM and FCA); not everyone wants, needs, or can afford mommyvans and Canyoneros. I just bought a pre-owned 2016 Nissan Sentra, loaded with only 1900 miles on the clock, for about $16000 last month; a similarly-equipped SUV/crossover would have easily cost me at least $5000-6000 more, way out of my budget.

Mrs. Fish acquired - by means of her dad having one which he gifted to us - a 1997 Lincoln Town Car. For most non-car-nuts that may not mean much, but you probably know that the Town Cars of that era were built on the Ford Crown Victoria platform, also known as the Indestructible Cop Car of the 1990’s. It is sitting somewhere in the neighborhood of 205k miles at the moment, and aside from an A/C issue that I need to get resolved soon and a driver’s side window that doesn’t work, it shows no signs of stopping any time soon (although it may fall apart from rust consumption before it dies). The damn thing is practically bulletproof, and I’m hoping it can carry her through the next couple of years until my car is paid off and I can turn the savings from not having a car payment to invest in a new vehicle for her.

I’m still toying with the idea of a Tesla but my compulsive cheapness and other priorities keep getting in the way.

Gillibrand is introducing a bill to allow banking at Post Offices:

“It is really an elegant solution,” said Gillibrand, who emphasized that benefits to the postal system, though significant, were a secondary consideration. “You have a system that already works. And you have the ability to let the unbanked have banking in a way that’s affordable.”
Under Gillibrand’s proposal, Americans could cash paychecks and deposit money in accounts free of charge at each post office location. Deposits would be capped at the larger of two amounts ― $20,000, or the median balance in all American bank accounts.

The postal banks would be able to distribute loans to borrowers of up to $1,000 at an interest rate slightly higher than the yield on one-month Treasury bonds, currently about 2 percent.

If you’re looking to go electric, look at the Chevy Bolt. I got one in October. It’s a fantastic car and the range is decent: 238 miles on a full battery on average. With the warmer weather, I’m actually closer to 260 this week.

This would be interesting to see, but getting to Alabama would be hard:

A Lynching Memorial Is Opening. The Country Has Never Seen Anything Like It.

“Just seeing the names of all these people,” said Bryan Stevenson, the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, the nonprofit organization behind the memorial. Many of them, he said, “have never been named in public.” […]

Inspired by the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, Mr. Stevenson decided that a single memorial was the most powerful way to give a sense of the scale of the bloodshed. But also at the site are duplicates of each steel column, lined up in rows like coffins, intended to be disseminated around the country to the counties where lynchings were carried out. People in these counties can request them — dozens of such requests have already been made — but they must show that they have made efforts locally to “address racial and economic injustice.”

For Mr. Stevenson, the plans for the memorial and an accompanying museum were rooted in decades spent in Alabama courtrooms, witnessing a criminal justice system that treats African-Americans with particular cruelty, or indifference.

Make sure you click on the NYT link, and see the picture of the pillars hanging from the ceiling with the names of those lynched on the bottom.

But how long does it take to charge the car? And how many places are available? I am far more interested in Volt because of the backup fuel supply.

re: #58 MsJ“For all y’all wondering about Kanye, look up when he was last spotted at Trump tower. It was right after he had a breakdown because he needed a big time cash infusion. He was begging some guy on Twitter for money and it got out of hand. Then like a week later, he’s in NY taking pics in front of the elevator at Trump tower.”

The best way to describe Kanye is to call him what PBO called him—-a jackass. I’ve never bought and will never buy one piece of his music because he is a jackass of the 1st order. The Trumps can praise him to the hills and tweet about how wonderful it is to watch blacks slowly move over into the Trump camp, but while they’re doing it, they need to pay attention to the fact that most of us can’t stand Trump, his offspring, everyone associated with him, Shania Twain, Kanye, and all of their supporters. We have as much respect for them as we do with the offal we flush down our toilets. I had six brothers, and unsurprisingly, my parents didn’t name any of them Donald Trump.

re: #48 Unshaken Defiance

I agree that the Democratic candidates should not make impeachment the main focus of their campaign. One of Hillary’s downfalls, in retrospect, was not taking Trump seriously as a candidate and focusing extensively on how unfit he was to be President, rather than promoting her own platform. You can hardly blame her, because this kind of candidate getting so far in the process was unheard of, and she, by contrast was very focused and serious and eminently qualified. But what she didn’t read was that enough people were becoming willing to overlook the many troubling aspects of his character and give him a chance. Democrats will win big in November if they show they are a clear and positive alternative to Republicans. I fear if they promise to vote to impeach Trump, they may alienate voters who might otherwise be willing to support them.
