This 2002 Snopes story needs an update in light of Trumpism and flat earth resurgence:

Working with Idiots Can Kill You!

Did a medical study determine that working with ‘stupid people’ is ‘one of the deadliest forms of stress’?

CLAIM: A medical study has determined that working with idiots is ‘one of the deadliest forms of stress.’

STATUS: FALSE.

The claim originated with the “World’s Most Reliable Newspaper,” the Weekly World News. Idiocy was one of WWN’s favorite themes around the turn of the century.

I stumbled upon this guy’s YT channel several days ago. He’s a young boatbuilder/sailor who has taken upon himself the somewhat mad idea of restoring a 108-year sailing vessel mostly by himself. If you’re even a little bit interested in woodworking, sailing or mad ideas, you might find it interesting. I’ve watched all 20 episodes.

youtube.com

In one episode. he drives to inner Georgia to meet with a colorful fellow who has the only sawmill in the USA cutting live oak. His saw mill is a great example of repurposing cast-off machinery. It uses four forklift motors.

On the previous thread there was discussion of Ford Motor Company discontinuing all automobile models except the Mustang and another model.

Around here all you see are pickup trucks or SUVs. There are very few cars.

That said, at the grocery store today, someone honked their horn at us because of our Smart car … looked over to see, it was an electric Smart with out-of-state tags (I couldn’t make out the state, they were blue with white letters but not similar to Montana).

There’s no way someone drove it to Bridgeport NE due to the range of an electric Smart (sixty miles or so). I figure they brought it on a trailer.

Since Ford trucks and SUVs cost more than my house, I guess I won’t be buying one of those when I need a new vehicle. We’ll just keep driving our Smart (which is approaching five years in age and 60,000 miles). It gets 50+ miles per gallon anyway and has plenty enough room for us. (Smart discontinued selling gasoline operated cars in the USA in 2017, essentially cutting themselves out of the rural market.)

more odd overlaps, hammer dulcimers, proofreading, eastern european heritage: my ex-wife drove a smart until she totaled it spinning out on a snowy road and slamming into a retaining wall. fortunately there was no oncoming traffic.
but the safety cell was deformed so we had to write it off.
our daughter called it the “little zippy car”

Quantum Link is so old it’s new again. Running a program named VICE, a Windows or Linux setup becomes a Commodore 64, 128, Plus 4, or Vic-20. You can then run C-64 or C-128 software to access Quantum Link Reloaded (a reverse-engineered version of the original 1985 site). (You can also use an actual Commodore 64 or 128 connected to a PC via a Commodore serial cable to connect with QL Reloaded.)

I have VICE on my computer, primarily for playing SID audio files that were uploaded during the day to QL and Usenet. (My claim to fame is a SID song I wrote and copyrighted.)

From Twitters’s policy (so when does Trump get kicked off for threatening nuclear war, men for harassing women, every Nazi on the site glorifying genocide, &c)

Violent threats and glorification of violence

Twitter Rules: You may not make specific threats of violence or wish for the serious physical harm, death, or disease of an individual or group of people.
Rationale

We want Twitter to be a place where people feel safe to freely express themselves. Thus, we will not tolerate behavior that encourages or incites violence against a specific person or group of people. We also take action against content that glorifies acts of violence in a manner that may inspire others to replicate those violent acts and cause real offline danger, or where people were targeted because of their potential membership in a protected category.
When this applies

Tweets that violate this policy contain violent threats or glorify violence.

Qwest. The same company as CenturyLink (my telephone company). Every once in a while CenturyLink decides they need to kill my Internet service whether I want it dead or not. Sometimes it will be out for a couple days.

Hey at least we have touch-tone service here now. (We’ve actually had it for a while but I didn’t know. I don’t see the need to replace my dial telephone though, it works fine.) We did get 911 service in 2011. (The card the county distributed is still on the wall by my telephone stand… .)

Yep. One and the same. I still call them Qwest even thought they changed their name. What irks me is I pay a premium for a fiber optic connection and the speed just isn’t what I expected. May fall back to standard ADSL and save a few bucks.

Fiber optics? We’re only a few decades away from that here. ADSL is all I have available. (I could use a cell phone if I lived a couple blocks closer to the town cell tower.)

What really sucks is that it’s more of a hybrid setup. I still have 500 ft of copper wire to the junction box. If I want to have 100% fiber, I would have to have a T1 line installed. I love my internet and streaming video, bur I don’t love it that much.

My DSL can stream 720p just fine (which is the resolution of my screen), but a lot of videos are 720p60 nowadays. Who needs 60 fps? The worst offender is a channel where all the videos are just a guy standing there talking and displaying still photos. 60 fps? Really?

I have four blocks of copper wire to the central telephone office in the village, then they do copper wire to somewhere. My IP shows up as Jefferson City, Missouri, just up the road from here about seven hundred miles.

In the meantime, more trouble for Mike Pompeo. It seems that McClatchy uncovered connexions with his company in Kansas and the state-owned Chinese oil company, which he failed to disclose.

That brings the total of foreign-owned firms he has failed to disclose to four, all Chinese companies.

In the early days of television, 60 fps was selected for two reasons: a) matches AC current feed in US homes, so sync was easier, and b) 60 fps is fast enough that “flicker” is not really a problem for most viewers.

Yeah, that was 60 fields per second, interlaced to give 30 frames per second (odd lines first, then even lines). And it was 525 lines—only about 485 with picture information.

This is all 720 lines, with equal horizontal resolution—instead of less than half like TV—repeated 60 times per second. Much, much more information.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area.

Jackson has withdrawn his nomination for VA Secretary. Good. He never should have been nominated in the first place. Trump never vetted him beyond whether Jackson considered himself loyal to Trump.

That’s all Trump cares about. He doesn’t care about core competencies, only whether someone is loyal to him even as he shows zero loyalty to anyone who works for him. He is quick to throw people under the bus precisely because the moment they no longer are useful to him he’s done with them.

This is how the party of personal responsibility works these days. They’ll be quick to blame Obama for this failed nomination, even though all these problems should have been picked up by Trump’s vetting before his name was made public as the nominee.

Oh, and Trump was on Fox and Friends this morning, and it was as cringeworthy as one would expect.

He’s trying to claim that Cohen is just a tiny part of the Trump legal team. Trying to minimize the work Cohen does, even as Cohen has asserted his 5A right (you know, the one where Trump claimed that if you take the 5th, you must be working for the mob - and Trump’s right). Trump tweets from years gone by are a treasure trove of this kind of thing. Trump is mobbed up, and the investigations are showing just how criminal he and the people surrounding him are.

Back in ‘95 when I was with involved with IndyCar racing, one of the main sponsors of one of the Columbus Ohio race teams was LCI International, which was headquartered in Dublin, a Columbus suburb.

Qwest bought out LCI in 1998 for 4+ billion.

I think Qwest still has their building up in Dublin but I don’t know if is still identified as Qwest or CenturyLink.

Indeed it is, and what’s particularly interesting is that wage growth isn’t occurring despite the massive windfall to companies.

It’s as though the trickle down isn’t.

Which, any one following basic economics would have predicted. Trickle down doesn’t work, and the companies have instead sat on the windfall, bought back shares, or rewarded their shareholders, instead of raising wages.

I’m pretty confident that won’t happen. The GOP and Democratic parties are institutionalized into the government sector, so the GOP won’t go away; it will just change when the elderly white base it depends on for votes can’t support it anymore. Libertarians have no chance of becoming a major party because its goal of eliminating domestic programs is toxically unpopular and has already been pushed about as far as the Republicans can take it, as we see with the teachers’ backlash in WV, Ky and Oklahoma.

Amazing economic news this morning. Initial unemployment claims last week decreased to 209,000, the lowest number since 1969, when the labor force was only half the size it is now.

Lots of us aren’t really looking for work or more work anymore because it just isn’t there. Take that into account when you see those numbers.

re: #151 lawhawk

Indeed it is, and what’s particularly interesting is that wage growth isn’t occurring despite the massive windfall to companies.

It’s as though the trickle down isn’t.

Which, any one following basic economics would have predicted. Trickle down doesn’t work, and the companies have instead sat on the windfall, bought back shares, or rewarded their shareholders, instead of raising wages.

That is because despite the official low 4.1% unemployment rate, there is still room for job growth. The participation rate in the prime 25-54 age group is still not particularly high. Another factor is that the economy is losing diversity as fewer companies control more of it, so there is little competition for workers, plus almost no private sector workers have unions to bargain for raises anymore.

From The Economist.

I wonder why you won’t see anything like this in the New York Times…

The organising principle of Mr Trump’s Republican Party is loyalty. Not, as with the best presidents, loyalty to an ideal, a vision or a legislative programme, but to just one man—Donald J. Trump—and to the prejudice and rage which consume the voter base that, on occasion, even he struggles to control. In America that is unprecedented and it is dangerous.

The best rebuke to Mr Trump’s solipsism would be Republican defeat at the ballot box, starting with November’s mid-term elections. That may yet come to pass. But Mr Trump’s Republican base, stirred up by his loyal media, shows no sign of going soft. Polls suggest that its members overwhelmingly believe the president over Mr Comey. For them, criticism from the establishment is proof he must be doing something right.

But responsibility also falls to Republicans who know that Mr Trump is bad for America and the world. They feel pinned down, because they cannot win elections without Mr Trump’s base but, equally, they cannot begin to attempt to prise Mr Trump and his base apart without being branded traitors.

Such Republicans need to reflect on how speaking up will bear on their legacy. Mindful of their party’s future, they should remember that America’s growing racial diversity means that nativism will eventually lead to the electoral wilderness. And, for the sake of their country, they need to bring in a bill to protect Mr Mueller’s investigation from sabotage. If loyalty to Mr Trump grants him impunity, who knows where he will venture? Speaking to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 George Mason put it best: “Shall that man be above [justice], who can commit the most extensive injustice?”

The Greens will be key to Moscow’s plans to re-elect Trump. Trump got less than half the vote in states which gave him over 100 electoral votes. Moscow and its American operatives must convince a large enough sliver of the Left’s voters that the Democratic nominee is just another crooked politician and the Democrats and Republicans are the same in order to slip Trump through again.

1.) Trump said he decided to call into Fox News as a gift to first lady Melania Trump for her birthday. When asked by Fox hosts if he gave Melania anything else besides doing a Fox interview to celebrate her birthday, Trump replied that he “didn’t get her so much… I got her a beautiful card.”

2.) Trump ranted about Senate Democrats obstructing his nominees after Ronny Jackson, his pick to be secretary of Veterans Affairs, withdrew his name. Trump said that Jackson, who has been accused by multiple people of drinking on the job and fostering a toxic work environment, had an “unblemished record.” He also said that “top of the line people” were “leaving their jobs” to come work for his administration, but fumed that Democrats were throwing up roadblocks to their confirmations.

3.) Trump admits he stayed overnight in Moscow during the 2013 Miss Universe pageant. Former FBI Director James Comey alleged in his contemporaneous memos that Trump told him allegations involving him and Russian prostitutes couldn’t possibly be true because he didn’t stay overnight in Moscow during his trip there in 2013. Trump fumed that “of course I stayed in Russia overnight” — although he again denied that there was any collusion between his campaign and the Russian government.

4.) Trump throws his own lawyer, Michael Cohen, under the bus. In the most stunning part of the interview, Trump said that most of Cohen’s work isn’t as an attorney, but as a private businessman. Trump also said he had “nothing” to do with Cohen’s private business interests and claimed that Cohen only performs a “tiny little fraction” of the legal work done on his behalf. These statements could potentially undermine Cohen’s claims that all documents seized in an FBI raid on his office should not be admissible evidence because they fall under attorney-client privilege.

5.) Even Fox News host Brian Kilmeade tells Trump to not watch so much cable news. During a long rant about the “unfair” treatment he receives in the mainstream press, Kilmeade interjected and said, “I’m not your doctor, Mr. President, by I would recommend you watch less of them.” “I don’t watch them at all!” Trump replied, before going into detail about a CNN show that he watched on Wednesday night.

6.) Trump went on a nonsensical rant about the Department of Justice being against him. Trump fumed that the DOJ was not investigating the alleged crimes of his political enemies, which prompted host Steve Doocy to tell him that “It’s your Justice Department!” Trump said that he does not want to get involved with the DOJ because of the Mueller “witch hunt” that’s being conducted against him. He then complained about the Mueller probe.

“I have a phony cloud over my head that doesn’t exist!” the president complained.

There was some talk about someone in the Pentagon must have big issues with Ronny being head of the VA. The thought was if Ronny was doctor to many Presidents, his issues must have been known by all previously. Why all of a sudden are they mentioned now?

Were they made up, unknown, hidden by someone in the Pentagon?

It even seems a bit like Ronny was comfortable with it all, like he knew it was hidden away too.

Seems like another “more to this story” kind of thing.

6.) Trump went on a nonsensical rant about the Department of Justice being against him. He then complained about the Mueller probe.

might not be the Achilles’ Heel of the Trump Administration, and what finally (if belatedly) brings it down. Twitter gibberings about “Crooked HIllary” and leading chants of “Lock Her Up!” at rallies may make for cheap cheers, but in the grubby reality the rest of us have to live in, “political prosecution” truly WILL take us to banana-republic dictatorship levels of governance.
What exactly “alleged crimes” are Trump’s political enemies supposed to have committed? And what level of hold-up-in-court proof might the G (?DoJ?) be able to produce to back up any such charges?
My own guess as to answers are a) bullshit and b) none: but unfortunately, who knows what an increasingly desperate Admin and GOP might try to deflect attention from their own criminality and/or corrupt toleration of it?

Republican congressional candidate and Pennsylvania State Sen. Guy Reschenthaler wrote an enthusiastic foreword to a bigotry-filled 2012 book by Carl Higbie, who resigned earlier this year from a government position because of toxic comments he made as a pundit.

Higbie’s book, Battle on the Home Front: A Navy SEAL’s Mission to Save the American Dream, attacked black, LGBTQ, Muslim, and Puerto Rican people as well as Hurricane Katrina survivors. In it, he also boasted of verbally attacking a fellow passenger on an airplane because of her weight and proposed killing undocumented immigrants who attempt to cross the U.S. border.

Reschenthaler is running in the Republican primary for Pennsylvania’s 14th congressional district seat against state Rep. Rick Saccone. He previously served as an attorney with the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He was also Higbie’s former co-host on the now-defunct Sound of Freedom radio program.

Trump is not “destroyed”, though, until he is impeached and/or in jail.

The former is very unlikely with Republicans in control of Congress.

The latter won’t happen for federal charges because the next Republican President will pardon Trump. However, I suppose it might still be possible for Trump to be convicted of breaking a state law, but if that day ever comes to pass then the politics in this country will be as ugly as the civil war, as I suspect somewhere in Alabama there is a judge who will want to throw Obama in jail.

Dr. Lincoln is at it again:

Length contraction: the real explanation

Fewer dissenters in the comments compared to the last video on time dilation. Maybe it’s because “time” triggers the reactions of people more, or perhaps it is because this time Don threw in some math.

Regardless, the hand wringing that shows up in the comments to Don’s videos remind me of this, from Conservapedia:

Attempts to prove E=mc²

Attempts to prove E=mc² are futile because there is no mass-energy equivalence. But that has not stopped people, including liberals who avoid the Bible, from insisting that they have cleverly developed a “proof” of E=mc², and thereby established a mass-energy equivalence which, in fact, does not exist. No Nobel Prize has ever been awarded for any experimental verification of this implausible equation, because no such verification exists.

The above is evidence why Trump made it into office as President.

Specifically, Bourdain is like so many who run most of the time in very rich circles, and highly educated circles, that he can’t truly appreciate how indoctrinated into their religion many of the “conservatives” out there in WV truly are.

To the Trumpers who hate the likes of Obama, their hatred of Obama and love of Trump is part of their existential crisis. It’s all they really have left of their belief system after modernity has taken away all the magic.

Are we taking bets on how many minutes it will be before divorce papers are served once he’s gone?

Conservatives always whine and claim libruls play the “race card”, but Cubic Zirconia and Nylon did exactly that at the end of this video when they challenged Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) because they haven’t see him challenging White people. Wow. Just fucking wow.

lol, I’ll take your word for it. I’m not watching those morons, I’d rather take trigonometry lessons from Sarah Palin.

They did say the money was for plane tickets, so I’m assuming they were paid.

Even though the FEC filing lists the payment was for “field consulting”.

THIS x10000000.

These people ignored decency, morality, and dignity just so they can brag their team won. I have lost life-long friends, people I’ve known since grade school, because of their undying support for this monster. There is no political or social issue big enough for you to ignore the countless moral shortcomings of this vile, miserable asshole.

Ignore?

Or is the more painful truth is they acknowledge the moral shortcomings and agree?

If Trump has done anything, he has drawn out a whole crap load of hate that has been there all along.

Remember when we used to think “you don’t say that in polite company?”

We no longer have polite company. It is just let it rip because we have Trump and they are all now a part of the Trump gang so it is okay to say it.

This country is really no longer polite.

I’m not sure we’ve ever been a polite country. We’ve had times where we were polite to certain people, but it rarely extended to everyone. We (meaning, mostly, white people) have been impolite to African Americans, Asian Americans (Chinese Exclusion Act, Internment camps, indentured servitude), Native Americans, Indian Americans, gays, transgender people, Latinos, anyone who doesn’t speak English, the Irish, Italians, Muslims, Jewish people (turning away refugees before entering WWII), and just about every other group that wasn’t deemed sufficiently “normal” (meaning: straight, cis, Christian, white).

Hell, that impoliteness has even been intersectional as members of one minority group have been less than polite to members of other minority groups.

That we even merely think the words “president of the United States” and “unhinged” in the same sentence is…..

Anthony Bourdain gave an interview in the Daily Beast flogging the new season of his show on CNN. Apparently he goes to West Virginia and “gets real” with the folks about why they love their guns and support Trump.

He couches it in the usual “We have to have a conversation, everyone needs to listen, we have to understand their fears” stuff.

I’m so sick of hearing this. I’m so fucking tired of hearing I need to understand why people, who are so proud of being Christian and American, looked at a bigoted, immoral monster like Trump and said “Yeah, that’s our guy.”

I just don’t get it. Or I do, and it makes me sick to my stomach.

I’m still waiting on one of them (any of them) to come out to so-called “Trump Country” and interview one of us who voted for Hillary Clinton.

When the Philadelphia Inquirer published one of these “views from Trump supporters” articles, I directly wrote the author of the piece asking if the newspaper there would be willing to interview any Clinton supporter, anywhere, in or out of Philly. I offered a phone interview if he wanted one.

He did not respond to my E-mail.

I only watched a few minutes of some of the linked videos in this thread, but Trump seemed to use that whole “interview” as a way to dump out all of his frustrations.

I hope they flushed after it was over.

What if - now, bear with me here - what if I already DO understand their fears?

And what if I understand that most of what they are afraid of is not true, and the other stuff they’re afraid of is best addressed by something other than trying to recreated the US of the 1950s in a 21st Century world?

What if I also understand the fears of the rest of society, and what if I have compared the two and find the fears of the Trumpkins to be trivial and silly by comparison?

Yeah, it’d be nice if the whole “listening to the other side” thing actually went in both directions.

Am I the only one who suddenly started giggling at the thought that this abhorrent waste of time by a Congressional committee, in interviewing Diamond and Silk, may result in a full blown FEC investigation of Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign financial filings and payment activities?

Unintended consequences.
