I get checks 3 to 6 times a shift. Always elderly people. I have never carded any of them.

Cigs? Alcohol? Lottery? Yep. Checks or groceries? Nope.

I think I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve seen someone pay with a check in the last year. And yes, they are generally older women who seem to still be balancing a checkbook rather than just pulling up their banking app on their phone. Most everybody else has moved to check cards with RFID chips, if only because we can be over and done with in less than 2 minutes.

“…Having provided volunteer legal services at a family detention center in Dilley, Texas, I’m certain that our government should never incarcerate children. I saw dozens of young children coughing, sneezing, and vomiting. Parents reported that their children were suffering from diarrhea, lethargy, high fevers, rashes and conjunctivitis. Children exhibited clear signs of behavioral regression, like crawling when they already know how to walk, banging their heads against chairs, crying uncontrollably, or refusing to release their arms from their mothers’ legs.

The furor over family separation has revealed a deep concern for the wellbeing of children, and this should extend to the incarceration of families. It’s simply immoral. But it’s only one aspect of a system growing more brutal, irrational, and unlawful under President Trump

Obama was right. They’re on a different planet. And I do blame both them for refusing to look at sources that aren’t right wing propaganda and the right wing propaganda itself for this but it’s their own fault. Anyone who really thought Donald Trump cares about anyone but himself is a fool.

re: #1 Ace-o-aces

We arrived in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, after going to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaentology in Alberta today. It is quite famous for its collection.

I also got the bill today from the lawyer for restoring our electricity. Good news, it was under our home-owner’s insurance deductible of $3,500. Bad news: That’s still a lot of money.

As for writing cheques, everyone where we live does that. (What is this “tap a debit card” of which you speak?) That said, no one needs ID to cash a cheque (or for that matter, shop for groceries, Trump is an idiot.)

I’ve heard the argument “you need ID to cash a cheque, so why not to vote” before, for decades from conservatives. That’s not a new argument.

The solution is simple if they really want that: a national ID card. Wingnuts have gone crazy at that suggestion for decades as well (something something mark of the beast or something). What conservatives have wanted ever since I was old enough to vote was to be able to either eliminate elections entirely, or at least make sure the only people who vote would vote for them.

Dear Heaven, they actually are. They say that this will publicise that because ‘illegals’ aren’t vetted, most of them ‘are disease-carrying vermin’, and the ones that aren’t will become diseased while in close custody with the ones who were already carriers after their arrest, so people will stay in their country of birth and try to make the most of having to give up half their children to serve as MS-13 footsoldiers.

If anyone thinks the child who died in fucking ICE custody is the only one, I have a bridge over some swampland for sale….

I worked as a day care teacher for one to two year olds for several years. We had strict cleanliness and disease control protocol to follow to control things like staph, strep, the flu, colds, etc. None of that is being followed in the dog cage shelters run by ICE and assorted contractors (who need to be run out of existence). It would be miraculous if these places were NOT a fucking lab for diseases of all kinds. This is genocidal shit right here. And when this is done, every fucking one of these places needs to be searched by forensic experts for remains. I wish I was paranoid rambling but I honestly don’t think so.

You can flip it - you’re for the environment.
You’re for providing that health care is accessible to all people
You’re for making sure that redistribution of wealth doesn’t accumulate in the 1% to the harm of everyone else.
You’re for holding government accountable when they engage in criminality.
You’re for human rights.
You’re for lots of things -

It’s the GOP that is against human rights, equal rights, civil rights, and voting rights.

They’re against the environmental protections and land protections that people like Native Americans hold sacred (think Bears Ears).

They’re against corporations being held accountable for malfeasance - pollution, fraud, ripping off consumers, etc.

So… we can frame things as a positive too.

Gerda Taro took some of the most dramatic war time photos ever seen before her life was cut tragically short.

Taro fearlessly turned her lens on conflict to capture arresting but sensitive photographs of fighting at the front in the Spanish Civil War. Widely considered the first female photojournalist to cover a war, she was also the first to die doing so.

To honor Taro’s dedication to delivering images of the war to the world, Google dedicated its Doodle on Wednesday to the pioneering photojournalist on her 108th birthday.

It’s really kinda silly to believe an ideology will die out simply because originators or current progenitors will eventually die. There will always be someone, somewhere who believes this tripe is the only way to save (white) civilization and will try to indoctrinate others accordingly.

What needs to be done is to make it clear that this kind of garbage is unacceptable.

A note from the Day 2 trial.

Later that day, after Manafort’s bond was revoked, Trump took to Twitter, incorrectly typing that Manafort had been “sentenced.”

“Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns,” Trump wrote. “Didn’t know Manafort was the head of the Mob. What about Comey and Crooked Hillary and all of the others? Very unfair!”

“Paul Manafort, who clearly is a nice man,” Trump told the host (Hannity). “You look at what’s going on with him, it’s like Al Capone. . . . It’s just a sad thing. It’s a very sad thing for our country.”

I think this is probably the most truthi thing trump has said. Alas, he doesn’t understand why.

The one thing I am not seeing in this Manafort trial is questions to the people on the stand on how they got paid. I would have expected this question to every witness: “Did you create any shell companies to get paid?”

This seems counter-productive:

Rabin went on to name some of the other American political consultants he worked with in Ukraine, as well as Rick Gates, Manafort’s former partner and the prosecution’s star witness. Gates is scheduled to testify later in the trial and is expected to offer key evidence of Manafort’s financial wrongdoing.

“Rick was the gatekeeper,” Rabin told the jury. “We didn’t want to bother Paul with schedules and invoices.”

I’m not able to follow the trial closely, but I think they’re laying the groundwork for how closely Manafort and Gates worked on things - and that Gates went to Manafort and Manafort personally signed off on these moves.

Watch the flow of information.

People gave info to X, info went from X to Gates, and then from Gates to Manafort. Manafort approved.

It’s the trail of evidence from start to finish. Manafort’s signatures on the paperwork will be the finishing flourish.

An FBI special agent testified that when a team searched Paul Manafort’s Alexandria condominium last August, they knocked three times and then entered with a key.

They did not have a “no-knock” search warrant allowing them to simply bust into the unit and did not pick the lock, Agent Matthew Mikuska testified.

The agents arrived just after 6 a.m., Mikuska testified. They waited 30 seconds between each knock; no one answered. But when they entered with the key and opened a door to the left, he said, they saw Manafort.

This does not seem to be going well.

11:30 a.m.: Judge grills prosecutors for a second time

After the defense raised an objection to prosecutors introducing an invoice seized in an FBI raid for proposed work on a Manafort home, Judge T.S. Ellis III dismissed the jury for a break — and then grilled prosecutors for a second time.

Ellis expressed skepticism over how the invoice actually advanced the prosecution’s case that Manafort filed false tax returns and did not fully report money he had made to the Internal Revenue Service. Furthermore, he worried that it might prejudice the jury against Manafort.

Ellis asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Uzo Asonye if it showed “just that Manafort is awash in money?”

Asonye argued the document furthered the prosecution’s case because it showed that Manafort had hid money from tax preparers and a bookkeeper, and that he used money from accounts in Cyprus to pay for a long list of luxury items. Those expenditures were never reported on tax returns.

Ellis said he would take the argument under advisement and decide later whether to allow the invoice to be introduced. Ellis has signaled some displeasure with the prosecution’s case Wednesday, grousing that it is “gilding the lily” by regularly referring to Manafort’s lavish spending and complaining about the pace. He has interrupted prosecutors on occasion to speed up their questioning and bluntly questioned them at other moments.

ICE’s statement is technically correct. The child wasn’t in ICE custody at the time of death. She died after her stay with ICE of a respiratory condition likely contracted during her stay exacerbated by poor treatment.

Edited for clarity.

Otto Warmbier didn’t die in North Korean captivity either. So North Korea is just as innocent as ICE.

Someone with time and patience needs to calculate the number of hours Dotard has spent tweeting and playing golf since he was sworn in.

Add in watching Fox, staging his Klan rallies, and going on vacation and I’d put the number at around 75% of the time he’s awake.

That article is more fucking whacked than even I expected. Holy shit.

Schmidt got his first two degrees from an unaccredited, Christian fundamentalist college, with a checkered recent history, in which men earn degrees in Bible and theology while programs “specifically for ladies” include “marriage and motherhood” and “missionary wife.”

So, literally, it’s a college where people can get an MRS degree.

Then Schmidt — who replaced controversial Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. when he abruptly resigned last year — in recent years got his doctorate from a tiny Baptist college in Marinette County where he once served as an unpaid consultant before it shut down in 2015. He is pursuing a second doctorate from yet another unaccredited religious school based in Louisiana.

His dissertation focuses on how he believes the biblical book of Daniel should be interpreted to explain why it has taken so long for the Rapture to occur, kicking off the Apocalypse.

Off topic sports news.

Sounding like Saint Urban Meyer, head coach at Ohio State may have put his job and career in jeopardy.

In the MeToo time we are in, this is not going to go well.

Local radio is ripping him for his “no tolerance for abuse” stand that he preaches.

A little bit to add to the story for those that may need a bit of background. The guy Meyer fired is the grandson of former Ohio State football coach Earl Bruce, who Meyer credits for being his mentor and gave him his first coaching job to start his career.

cleveland.com - Urban Meyer knew of 2015 domestic abuse allegations against Zach Smith: Report

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A report from Brett McMurphy on Wednesday claims that Ohio State coach Urban Meyer knew of a 2015 domestic abuse allegation against former receivers coach Zach Smith, and had knowledge of Smith’s alleged history of abuse against his ex-wife, Courtney Smith.

Zach Smith was fired by Ohio State on July 23 after McMurphy first reported that 2015 incident, another incident in 2009 in Florida and that Courtney Smith had an order or protection filed against her ex-husband in Delaware, Ohio on July 20.

Meyer said last week that he knew of the incident in Florida, when Zach Smith was a graduate assistant on his coaching staff at the University of Florida, and according to police reports obtained by McMurphy allegedly slammed his then-pregnant wife against a wall. Meyer said he went through the proper protocol, and that he and his wife Shelley counseled the Smiths and “moved forward.”

Police reports obtained by cleveland.com show that Powell police were called on Oct. 25, 2015 for an incident at Courtney Smith’s home and that Smith said she has “been a victim of sustained physical abuse by the suspect,” Zach Smith.

Meyer denied any previous knowledge of that 2015 report.

re: #281 Colère Tueur de Lapin

There is actual evidence out in the world that suggests that darning sock is bad for your footsies. The raised lump is an irritant that can cause problems.

Also, new pair of socks $3, or whatever? What is your time worth? Opportunity costs are important, here.

Well done darns are not bad. I think $3.00 socks would be…cheap material with so-so sewing.

Since Carsons is going out of business, I just went and got new socks that originally cost like $10-$15 a pair. They feel spectacular.

I went and look at the Twitter page.

I saw a video of a large Black guy standing just inside the door of a Chick-fil-A singing “I’m Proud to be an American.”

I’ve never been in a Chick-fil-A. I don’t think I will be going anytime soon, if at all.

The only good thing they used to have was the cole slaw made from scratch. So they stopped making it…

I have a new feature that’s not ready for prime time yet - I restored the retweet feature to the way it used to work, for now. Reload the page and it will be back.

No biggie. I am sure what you’re doing will be fabulous (as always). I just noted the change and figured it was a twitter API issue.

I just want this to end now. I know we’ll never get back to normal fully but we need to get rid of this asshole now and put him in a prison or at least in a place where he can’t tweet stupid blulshit.

The best part of Fuckface’s tweet is that it can be read as if he’s saying that the collusion between Russia and his campaign was one of the most successful collusive relationships ever…

I think eventually he will admit to it but enough of people on the right won’t care because they will say it was necessary to stop Clinton at all costs or continue with his lie that HRC colluded too.

3) Darth Vader

That’s how batcrap insane Trump tweets are. Then again, they sound better in the original Cyrillic.

Okay, Republicans, you can stop raising the bar on fucked up sex behavior online. We get it, you’re all fucking perverts.

An Illinois state lawmaker is expected to resign after allegations surfaced that he posted his ex-girlfriend’s nude photos to a fake Instagram account to trick men into having sexually graphic conversations with him, according to several reports.

Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin issued a statement on Wednesday, calling the accusations “troubling” and saying the lawmaker in question, Rep. Nick Sauer (R), would be resigning.

Politico was first to report on Wednesday that Sauer’s ex-girlfriend, Kate Kelly, had filed a complaint with the Office of the Legislative Inspector General, accusing Sauer of using nude images she had sent the lawmaker when they were dating to “catfish other men.”

“Nick would use this account to direct message men with my photos to engage in graphic conversations of a sexual nature,” she said in the complaint, according to Politico. “The men believed they were communicating with me and Nick shared private details of my life.”

You cannot make this shit up.

Kelly said she and Sauer, who was running for reelection and is a member of the state House Sexual Discrimination and Harassment Task Force, started a long-distance relationship in 2016 and she moved to Chicago from California in June 2017 to continue the relationship.

Trump would be content to let him die in prison. Putin, however, would have him hunted down and killed for flipping. Damned if you do; damned if you don’t.
