Mrs. McCain might actually be a relatively decent choice considering the enormous quality and depth of Derp that is the Arizona GOP. It’s been rumored (whispered actually) that she still retains some semblance of a soul and while that would disqualify her in a political debate in AZ Politics, the Gov is able to do as he wishes (and he’s a loon as well, but a PR savvy one) and thusly, may appoint her.

To be honest, she would be a step above (IMHO) Martha McSally, Kelli Ward and Sheriff Joe and that would even include the remainder of the GOP Congressional representatives that currently hold office.

I could see Ducey following this as somewhat established protocol although to be honest, if McCain had resigned or even switched parties the outcome could have been even more positive. Granted, I will acknowledge the man for some of the stands he took and the few efforts he made that actually served the common good, but make no mistake, he could have done a LOT more had he shown the political will to do so.

In a sense, I think he was just as flummoxed as a lot of old line GOPers are about how to handle the nascent racism and idiocy (if not outright corruption and lack of ethics) that comprise not only the rank and file but much of the leadership.

I once (very briefly) considered joining a fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, because my older bro was a member and their frat house was directly across the street from the Geology Building, and that would have meant being able to sleep in until 7:45 for an 8:00 class.

Last week’s Infrastructure Week was a big success! We’re moving forward to MAGA!

Well, there was that little hiccup about McCain’s death, but, bygones.

Drumpf has been part of 17% of the Greatest Bull Market Ever, but Oboma’s 83% was a fucking disaster.

Meanwhile, quietly, quietly, Mueller’s team, without leaking a fucking word, slowly turns the vise grips on Drump’s balls. It’s going to get worse. The remarkable thing for me is that they didn’t offer Cohen immunity. That means one simple thing:

They didn’t need anything that he had to give them.

Think about that. He was burnt toast. What they recovered from raiding his electronics and paper files was sufficient to put him in prison. Not a very good lawyer, was he? Not very prudent, as GHW Bush would say.

Drumf’s accountant is a different story. That’s the motherfucker who has the juice. He has the tax returns, the financial records, the proof that the Russian money that Fredo Jr. bragged about providing their working capital ten years ago after American banks quit loaning Daddy money after his abject failure as a CEO will bring Daddy down.

It’s going to be a fun new Infrastructure Week, isn’t it?

Night all, sweet scaly dreams.

Good point. I was focused on the voodoo cuts and forgot all about the tariffs. Combined with record deficits they will push inflation through the roof.
This raises a thorny question though: Should we still care about the homeless when huge masses of MAGAts find themselves destitute and living on the streets? Would it not be too easy to remember the hate and contempt they spewed on the poor in earlier times?

Not everybody rendered homeless would be a Trump supporter.

As for homelessness, that hate wasn’t just spewed by Trump supporters; conservatives have been doing that for a long time.

Sarah Palin Says John McCain “Had Some Strange People Around Him” (Mother Jones)

Even John McCain’s running mate has to weigh in on all that conservative love for the late Senator.

Poor John McCain can’t die in peace without a last few digs from his former vice-presidential running mate, Sarah Palin. While most of the political world was fondly remembering McCain and issuing sympathetic statements to his family, Palin took the opportunity to make McCain’s death all about her. She went on the click-happy British website DailyMailTV to vent—again—about her frustrations with his staff and advisors during and after the 2008 presidential campaign.

She told the DailyMailTV that McCain lived in the DC “bubble” and was out of touch with real people and as a result, overreliant on his advisors to tell him “what America really wanted.” She went on to say:

I don’t think inherently he necessarily was really connected, so he did rely on people telling him - in polls - telling him and…he went from there.

I think that’s unfortunate because he had some strange people around him and..disloyal people, and you know, I don’t say that as like hate speech or griping about it, it’s just a fact they were just some not nice people.

Unfortunately that is true. I thought McCain could have handled that situation better perhaps but he at least defended Obama’s personal character. Romney and Trump would have never done that. One of the reasons I first supported McCain over Obama was his decency and tendency to put country over party. My support vanished once he chose Palin as his running mate. Granted, he was probably manipulated into choosing her, but that and the Keating 5 scandal were already too many hits against his overall character. I answer to the head of the organization, based in Beijing, and I will have a staff of two office workers and seven other teachers. I’m also in charge of local personnel matters, which given our current line-up of teachers may be very interesting as the term progresses.

Wish me luck.

Anyhow, I’ve heard a lot of great stories about how McCain was to people on the opposite side of the aisle especially if they were young staffers. You all saw the elevator intern Kennedy one. McCain was also very gracious to the interns that he met that my former poli sci teacher administered. He took the time to remember my teacher’s name, where he taught, and was always eager to place interns in his office. McCain valued public service like George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole before him. That sort of mindset has been deeply missing from his party since his defeat ten years ago. Instead you get scumbag businessmen like Mitt and Trump who see government as a means of protecting their interests and not the people from the lowest intern to POTUS in our government as people who are serving their country. I have no regrets at all about preferring Obama over McCain but I do wish this was John McCain’s GOP much more than it was Mitt and now Trump’s GOP. A party of bigoted, self absorbed assholes.

That gets me thinking about Mueller too. Mueller has been a Republican ever since he entered public life. Trump quite frankly has been a political hermaphrodite for much of his until he eventually settled on his final stage: Bigoted fuckwad. But I guess that’s what matters more to Republican voters. It doesn’t matter that McCain and Mueller for that matter have served their country in some way since the 1960’s. Nor does it matter that they were serving Republican administrations including the one many Republican voters claim to love. No, they’re not acceptable because they’re not bigoted assholes. This is the modern party of Lincoln. It’d be as if P.T. Trump never would have gotten captured for the same reason why Trump never wore an uniform. Trump only cared and still only does care about himself. That wasn’t the case with McCain.

We actually would be doing better if the tax cuts weren’t in place and trade war wasn’t ongoing. The latter is having a depressive effect, and the tax cuts were done via redistributing wealth to millionaires while the burdens flow to everyone else in higher debt and service cuts (and the GOP demanding more cuts to “balance” the books).

The GOP is trying to whitewash the longest sustained stock market bull market by ignoring that 80+% of the increase was on Obama’s watch.

Trump inherited a strong economy and it suddenly is awesome. All while Obama was in the WH, Trump attacked it as weak and growth was awful (including when Obama saw 4% growth or better). Trump gets 4% in a single quarter and he and Fox are celebrating like this is the second coming.

Hell they had no problem with Trump saying e were in the worst economic conditions since the Depression. Two years later? Things are more or less the same and it’s all a sduden: TRUMP SHOULD BE PRAISED FOR HIS HANDLING OF THE ECONOMY. Uh no. Especially because Trump’s policies are actually hurting the economy and it’s eventually going to show big time.

Lupin  Aug 27, 2018 • 6:24:54am

The disrespect shown by the US far right over John McCain is… unbelievable.

De Gaulle was as divisive a personality as could be, and the French far right never forgave him over what they saw as his “betrayal” of “French Algeria,” but when he passed, no one, but absolutely no one, let out a whisper of disrespect. Like McCain, his historical stature was just too great to express such opinions then.

Speaking of Algeria (or Indochina), my late dad served in both conflicts, although he was never really in great danger (French medical corps). While French troops behaved with great heroism, and we salute their service, with the passing of years and historical perspective, for the most part, we no longer glorify the cause they served then, i.e.: colonialism.

I thought the same judgment had been made over your side of the Viet-Nam war and I was a little surprised to see some of the hagiographic comments about McCain’s service there; I mean, bombing civilian populations (whether London or Dresden) doesn’t strike me as something one should flaunt.

This is in no way a reflection of McCain himself, whose public comments on the topic were (AFAIK) always wise and balanced, but some of the media’s hyperbole.

I’ve never been to Vietnam but I must say I really respect the people there. And yeah it says a lot that McCain’s former captor has been more respectful in his remembrance of McCain than Trump. I’ve said it early on about Trump but it’s who he decides to say nice things about and who he doesn’t that really tells us all about his lack of character. Certainly in terms of film there is an intense pressure to repeat successful characters. I’ll give you an example, but you mustn’t use her name. [Very famous Hollywood actress] has played the same role for 20 years. She even looks pretty much the same. She’s probably one of the richest women out there, but I would shoot myself if I were like that, only giving people what they expect.

So who do we think she’s talking about? I’m going to guess Jennifer Anniston.

Arrrgh!

I hate how certain things get picked up and used by everyone. Take “fake news” as an example.

I am an auto racing fan. This morning I am reading some coverage of yesterday’s Begian Grand Prix at Spa.

World Champion British driver Lewis Hamilton, came second in yesterday’s race won by Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari. Hamilton drives for Mercedes Benz.

Hamilton talking after the race said he thought Ferrari had some trick things going on in their cars.

British newspapers played it up and did headlines saying Hamilton said Ferrari used tricks (hinting illegal) to win the race.

Hamilton this morning is saying he never meant that. Tricks can mean legal parts or systems that are just advanced beyond what everyone was doing before. A new trick.

So what did he say? Hamilton is quoted as saying the headlines are “fake news.”

We are going to have to deal with Trumpisms for some time aren’t we? We have let the BS artist put his BS into the world’s language. Lasting damage.

A bigger part of the economic growth for Q2 was the shifting of resources/purchases due to Trump’s trade wars.

If the war goes ahead, the growth slows.
If the war doesn’t, then those companies have excess inventory and will depress further purchases to avoid having excess inventory.

Either way, the growth will slow. It was goosed because of the trade war, and it will depress it going forward.

In other words, it was a one-shot boost due to avoiding taxes - the Trump trade war tariffs.

Seriously, who would want to write “White House staff, Trump Administration” on their resume now?

Trump can’t do anything about any state AG. Dershowitz is an idiot.

Are we so sure about that? Trump can (at least I think so) take refuge behind the State/Federal “firewall” and basically ignore any State investigations as long as he’s President. I can imagine the WH response to, say, a subpoena from the NY AG - for either records or personal appearance - would be to first, dump it in the nearest bin, and secondly, say “see you in court”. And then, create (AFAICT) an entirely new legal/constitutional crisis over the relative “immunity” of a sitting President: one which might take months/years to resolve (if ever), and then, might not get as “favorable” a ruling from SCOTUS as we might like.

Unexplored territory, to be sure, but not unexpected when “we” elected a shady-verging-on-crooked businessman like Donald Trump to the Presidency.

You have to admit that the people still working for trump have virtually no opportunities a standard white house employee would have. Those who have tied their careers to the trump thing are going to hurt for life. They better have fully formed resumes that will allow them to not put their trump experience on them because any resume that sniffs of trump is a career killer.

Breaking story from Sweden:

A Swedish MP has had shots fired at the bus or van he was travelling in. Apparently, a car overtook the bus and shots were fired from it. Inside the car was a member of Parliament who apparently has a leading position and already was under the protection of the Swedish Security Service. The Swedish Security Service has taken over the investigation and so far, it is being investigated as a aggravated criminal threat.

All scandals end with ‘gate’, thanks to Nixon. Still.

It did not diminish the gloriousness of the day he resigned. Still.

I’ll jump in and right back out to weigh in.

According to the US Flag Code, the flag is to be placed at half-mast on the day of death and the day after on the death of a sitting senator or representative, and that person’s desk in the House or Senate is to be draped in black.

The relevant branch of government (in this case the Senate) can order a longer period (that was done with the Supreme Court when Associate Justice Antonin Scalia died), hence the flag is at half-mast at the Capitol.

The Department of Defense has no authority to order flags on Federal buildings around DC to be lowered, though they can weigh in with an opinion to the President if asked.

At the White House, where the flag is at full mast now, Trump has chosen not to lower the flag for the customary period (until McCain’s interment).

An example of that is Sen. John Glenn’s death. President Obama issued a proclamation for the flag to remain at half-mast until his interment. As he laid in state first in Ohio, then in the Capitol Rotunda, the flag was at half-mast for a long time.

obamawhitehouse.archives.gov (Proclamation of Sen. Glenn’s Death)

Trump has already made his decision - no proclamation. Trump doesn’t admit he is wrong, so if every government official in DC howls about this, he will not reverse his decision.

On the issue of what day the flag goes back up based on the Flag Code, his death was very close to sunset. As such, I made an executive decision in my town that it was after dark when he died (our time) and decided the flags would go back up to full-mast tonight.

Any state governor can also order a longer period for his or her state, and Federal properties within that state are required to reply. It is a bit difficult for me to check every state, but I know neither Arizona nor Nebraska have issued such a proclamation. (Arizona’s governor’s office has a proclamation up about John McCain, but no half-mast proclamation.)

azgovernor.gov

No Republican governor is going to cross Trump. It would be nice if Democratic governors did; you can call your governor’s office to find out if they will release a proclamation to lower the flag to half-mast (even if only for the day of interment).

re: #240 Anymouse 🌹

Trump ordered flags flown at half staff for five days in Barbara Bush’s honor.

His need to be an absolute dick overrules any attempt at consistency.

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement following news that U.S. Senator John McCain passed away at the age of 81.

“Our country has lost a great patriot who dedicated his life to serving our country in our military and then in the U.S. Senate. Our prayers and condolences are with the McCain family.”

Who doesn’t know the flag code where the live and are from?
In my place of origin, it’s up at sunrise, down at sunset, treat the flag (regardless of nation) with respect, proper procedure for raising half mast is up full mast, then lower to half or at least one flag height from top, proper procedure for lowering is up to full mast, then fully lower.
For fixed flags, the procedure to mark mourning is black sorrow band on top.

So is Henry confused or am I? Where is this proclamation from the yam?

South Carolina observing Half Staff
Sunday, August 26, 2018

As a mark of respect for the memory of Senator
John McCain, the President has issued a
proclamation ordering that the flag of the United
States be flown at half-staff until sunset, on
the day of interment.
Accordingly, the Governor
directs that flags atop the State
Capitol Building be flown at half-staff
immediately and until sunset on the day of
interment.

Just now in the Oval: Trump just ignored multiple Qs about McCain, including four from @jonkarl who stood about 6 feet away from the president and asked if he had anything to say about the late senator and whether he believed McCain was a hero. The president stared straight ahead

I bet I can guess what happened.

My own state governor usually issues proclamations that say “the President has ordered the flag to half-staff” and releases them.

I’m guessing the So. Car. governor’s office prepared such a statement in advance, and simply released it with the assumption the President would release such a proclamation; or they used a boilerplate proclamation and just inserted the relevant information.

And if he tries to blame it on his staffers, then it goes to their sheer incompetence, and his vanity.

It isn’t about him.

It’s about respecting a man who spent 50+ years in public service, nearly dying several times while in the Navy (the Forrestal incident and then as a POW).

All that happened while Trump was dodging the draft so he could have his own personal Vietnam at Studio 54.

A president that has to be shamed into being a decent human being has never been one. If he releases such a proclamation now, it’s not because he’s had a “change of heart” or because of “long thought,” it’s because the same people in the press office who beat him into reading prepared statements after Charlottesville and Helsinki have again pistol-whipped him into showing an ounce of fake humanity.

Agree on the former part, disagree on the latter. They’ll spin it as the White House needing time to write a proclamation encompassing how great and awesome McCain was…before releasing something so generic you could mistake it for a pre-written macro.

Media is still giving Trump passes on claiming a deal was struck.

Ask him specifics on the deal struck. What was changed. SPECIFICALLY.

What will change from NAFTA? BE SPECIFIC. Here’s the text - ask what is changing. A great negotiator would be able to tell you what is changing. If he can’t even manage that, then ask why he doesn’t know.

The media just goes out there and repeats his stuff at these pressers, all while later acknowledging Trump pushed his vapid vaporware again and again.

Even the USTR recognizes this isn’t repealing NAFTA or invoking Congressional action on the repeal. They’re looking to modify some provisions - not an entire rewrite.

CORRUPTION CONNECTED TO PAYDAY LENDING ALLEGED

Meanwhile little fuckwad Mike DeWine is running ads in his governors race against Richard Cordray calling his time as Secretary of State corrupt even though he went after big banks and their bad practices in Ohio.

Then he attacks him for his time as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau saying he “secretly collected hundreds of millions of credit card accounts and mortgages. Worse, Cordray failed to protect our information. It was hacked over 200 times.”

That is called mostly false by PolitiFact and the only “hack” to the credit card info was more due to the contractors hired to enter the info. Plus, that was all done to set up the bureau even before Cordary started operating it.

So, what is the Ohio House Speaker, who resigned his seat due to bad dealing being investigated for? That’s right…payday lending scams.

And DeWine probably knew it was all going on being the Ohio Attorney General.

But don’t vote for the guy who was trying to protect ALL Americans against bad lending practices.

I hope that little snake DeWine gets beaten by Cordray…but right now it is too close.
