One of the Most Amazing Tiny Desk Concerts Yet: Classical Pianist George Li

Aug. 31, 2018 | Tom Huizenga — When George Li, the 23-year-old American pianist, revealed his Tiny Desk setlist, one thought came to mind: How will these powerhouse showstoppers sound on an upright piano? The music he intended to play, by Franz Liszt and Vladimir Horowitz, was designed for a real, 7-foot concert grand piano – the kind they used to call “a symphony orchestra in a box.”

Turns out, there was nothing to worry about. Li’s technique is so comprehensive, so agile, so solid, that instead of making our trusty Yamaha U1 quake in fear, he made the instrument sound several sizes larger, producing glorious, full-bodied colors and textures.

Li comes by his achievements honestly. He began lessons at age 4, and at 10 gave his first public concert. Five years later, he snagged the silver medal at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Last fall, he released his debut album on a major label and these days he’s playing with many of the world’s major orchestras while touring the globe. He just graduated from Harvard where he studied English literature and piano, in a hybrid program with the New England Conservatory.

Li is still young, but in some ways he’s an old soul. Forget streaming services; he still listens to CDs. And his “idol” is the old-school, swashbuckling virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz, a pianist who died nearly 30 years ago.

To honor Horowitz, Li begins his Tiny Desk recital with the master pianist’s electrifying reboot of a theme from Bizet’s opera Carmen. Li describes it as an “insane knuckle-buster.” Just watch his hands blur during the fiendish interlocking octaves at the explosive climax. Then it’s two pieces by the ultimate monster pianist, Franz Liszt. The Consolation No. 3, with its gently flowing, long-lined melody and diaphanous ornaments, reveals the poetic side of the composer, while the rip-roaring La campanella begins with a single tinkling bell that multiplies into a wild cacophony of trills and scales, ending in what Li calls “a big bang.”

George Li is a pianist whose star is very busy rising. And judging from the panache and precision in which he dispatched this extremely difficult music, he’s an artist worth keeping an ear on for a good long time.

Set List
Horowitz: Variations on a Theme from Bizet’s Opera Carmen
Liszt: Consolation No. 3
Liszt: La Campanella

So, it seems I am going to be fostering a feline overlord. A friend of a friend (whom I remember from High School) has apparently gotten himself a 5 year vacation with the state of Wisconsin a while back (not sure why, didn’t ask) and his feline overlord needs a place to stay. I was considering adopting anyway so I’ll care for his Sophie for the rest of the time that he’s away. Hopefully she’ll help with the mice problem… < big grin >

I’ve heard they’re coming to Earth in droves.

I always think about the series Andromeda, it was a Roddenberry story but made after he died. It sort of turned traditional futuristic space stories on it’s head - instead of the Earth being the center of some galactic government, it was just a backwater planet that wasn’t particularly important in galactic politics. For some reason, I feel like that’s more likely than a Star Trek style Federation where we’re the most important species - especially since we can’t seem to get agreement among our various cultures.

Well, a ton of the opposition to the TPP came from portside (in this country, anyway) - I recall seeing lefty blogs full of fulminating screeds about evil “corporatization” and viewing TPP as a combination of sweatshop exploitation and copyright warfare (i.e. forcing compliance with restrictive US IP law), etc.

And on the other side, there was a sort of sensitivity on the Right that it would turn into a Pacific NAFTA, with a load of negative political connotations (mainly that wasn’t enough grift involved to buy off workers’ “job-losing” complaints).

So TPP had major opposition on both sides of the political spectrum here: and (as is not uncommon with complex international-trade negotiations) the Obama Admin couldn’t sell the deal with simple sloganeering - which Republicans weren’t going to go for in any case because Obama (and elections).

Of course, the notion that Donald Trump’s backward and simpleminded notions of “dealmaking” might - rather than benefiting the US’ trade position re the Pacific Rim - fuck it up mainly to China’s profit didn;t seem to occur to anyone….

WASHINGTON (AP) — The company set up by President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney has agreed to rescind Stormy Daniels’ hush-money agreement and drop its planned $20 million lawsuit against the porn actress for violating the agreement.

An attorney for the company, Essential Consultants, said in a Friday night court filing that the company wants Daniels to repay the $130,000 she was paid as part of the agreement.

Daniels claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006, which Trump denies. She was suing to invalidate the nondisclosure agreement she signed days before the 2016 election.

Essential Consultants was set up by Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti, says he doesn’t have to accept the offer and won’t settle the case without deposing Trump.

It’s expected I guess but still interesting that Essential Consultants is now making offers to settle seemingly independent of Trump. Now that Cohen and Trump’s interests are completely adversarial this whole deal is a fucking goat rodeo. Does anybody know who is even representing Trump in the case now and what their disposition is regarding the validity of the contract? I suspect they’d want to cut anchor but then nothing they’ve done has made sense so far.

Amen, brother. The thing the TPP had going for it was that China was not involved in either the negotiations, nor the deal. The idea was to isolate China from an existing agreement among pretty much everybody else on the rim. It may have needed some tweaks, but the base was solid.

Dumping it has been an absolute boon to China, and an absolute wet farty shit for us. Absolutely stupid from any sane economic policy point of view.

FTR, Dakota Meyer’s Medal of Honor citation:

Corporal Meyer maintained security at a patrol rally point while other members of his team moved on foot with two platoons of Afghan National Army and Border Police into the village of Ganjgal for a pre-dawn meeting with village elders. Moving into the village, the patrol was ambushed by more than 50 enemy fighters firing rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and machine guns from houses and fortified positions on the slopes above. Hearing over the radio that four U.S. team members were cut off, Corporal Meyer seized the initiative. With a fellow Marine driving, Corporal Meyer took the exposed gunner’s position in a gun-truck as they drove down the steeply terraced terrain in a daring attempt to disrupt the enemy attack and locate the trapped U.S. team. Disregarding intense enemy fire now concentrated on their lone vehicle, Corporal Meyer killed a number of enemy fighters with the mounted machine guns and his rifle, some at near point blank range, as he and his driver made three solo trips into the ambush area. During the first two trips, he and his driver evacuated two dozen Afghan soldiers, many of whom were wounded. When one machine gun became inoperable, he directed a return to the rally point to switch to another gun-truck for a third trip into the ambush area where his accurate fire directly supported the remaining U.S. personnel and Afghan soldiers fighting their way out of the ambush. Despite a shrapnel wound to his arm, Corporal Meyer made two more trips into the ambush area in a third gun-truck accompanied by four other Afghan vehicles to recover more wounded Afghan soldiers and search for the missing U.S. team members. Still under heavy enemy fire, he dismounted the vehicle on the fifth trip and moved on foot to locate and recover the bodies of his team members. Corporal Meyer’s daring initiative and bold fighting spirit throughout the 6-hour battle significantly disrupted the enemy’s attack and inspired the members of the combined force to fight on. His unwavering courage and steadfast devotion to his U.S. and Afghan comrades in the face of almost certain death reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

from wiki’s article on Dakota Meyer:

Meyer was awarded the Medal of Honor in a ceremony on 15 September 2011.[13] When a White House staffer contacted Meyer to arrange the ceremony, Meyer asked if he could have a beer with the president.[14] He received an invitation to the White House for the afternoon before the ceremony. Meyer also requested that when he was honored, simultaneous commemorative services should be held at other associated locations to honor the memory of his colleagues who died or were mortally wounded during the ambush and his rescue attempts

Sounds to me like someone with far too much honor to be associated with the failin’ Palin’s for long. Hopefully he can keep his kids as far away as possible from their mother as well.

FTR, Dakota Meyer’s Medal of Honor citation:

And, the actions of Cpt William D. Swenson, during the same engagement. For which he too was awarded the Medal of Honor

Captain William D. Swenson distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as embedded advisor to the Afghan National Border Police, Task Force Phoenix, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan in support of 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, during combat operations against an armed enemy in Kunar Province, Afghanistan on September 8, 2009. On that morning, more than 60 well-armed, well-positioned enemy fighters ambushed Captain Swenson’s combat team as it moved on foot into the village of Ganjgal for a meeting with village elders. As the enemy unleashed a barrage of rocket-propelled grenade, mortar and machine gun fire, Captain Swenson immediately returned fire and coordinated and directed the response of his Afghan Border Police, while simultaneously calling in suppressive artillery fire and aviation support. After the enemy effectively flanked Coalition Forces, Captain Swenson repeatedly called for smoke to cover the withdrawal of the forward elements. Surrounded on three sides by enemy forces inflicting effective and accurate fire, Captain Swenson coordinated air assets, indirect fire support and medical evacuation helicopter support to allow for the evacuation of the wounded. Captain Swenson ignored enemy radio transmissions demanding surrender and maneuvered uncovered to render medical aid to a wounded fellow soldier. Captain Swenson stopped administering aid long enough to throw a grenade at approaching enemy forces, before assisting with moving the soldier for air evacuation. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Swenson unhesitatingly led a team in an unarmored vehicle into the kill zone, exposing himself to enemy fire on at least two occasions, to recover the wounded and search for four missing comrades. After using aviation support to mark locations of fallen and wounded comrades, it became clear that ground recovery of the fallen was required due to heavy enemy fire on helicopter landing zones. Captain Swenson’s team returned to the kill zone another time in a Humvee. Captain Swenson voluntarily exited the vehicle, exposing himself to enemy fire, to locate and recover three fallen Marines and one fallen Navy corpsman. His exceptional leadership and stout resistance against the enemy during six hours of continuous fighting rallied his teammates and effectively disrupted the enemy’s assault. Captain William D. Swenson’s extraordinary heroism and selflessness above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Task Force Phoenix, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division and the United States Army.

this was before he met the Palins.

Really? I’m surprised. The Medal in the Marine Corps is given rarely for survivors (Chesty Puller got five Navy Crosses, never the Medal). Lots of Medals for jumping on grenades, blowing a charge in a pillbox while unprotected from the blast, charging a pillbox while unprotected except for covering fire and wiping it out while dying of your wounds, &c.

In the Marines, maybe less than 20% are given to living men. Less if you count Marine aviators in WW II who happened to survive the war.

In Vietnam, 52 Marines got the Medal, 41 posthumously. One of the living jumped on a grenade. Another was a helicopter pilot who dropped his Huey into an a hot LZ and dragged an overloaded helicopter out of harm’s way. Ball’s like grapefruits, all of them, but most Marines get Navy Crosses for gallantry if they live.

Seems to me that apartments have numbers on the door. If you are trying to use a key on a door, it should match the number on the door. Unless you are drunk. Then bang on the door, because your key doesn’t work. And then, if someone opens the door to “your” apartment, you should probably ask them why they had the key changed.

If it’s a white woman or a white man.

Unless you were drunk, in which case you should pull out your service weapon and shoot the black man who opened the door without asking why the key had been changed.

So, public intoxication, resulting in depraved indifference, resulting in the misuse of a service weapon by an intoxicated civil servant, resulting in the homicide of an unarmed civilian opening the door of his own home, equals homicide in the second degree resulting in a forty year prison sentence.

Plead it out tomorrow and move on.

Another thought. LEO’s are trained in the use of weapons. They aren’t civilians. Any time they draw a weapon, it’s a premeditated act. The use of that weapon proves intent. If they kill someone, it is a homicide, by definition, and it should be investigated as a homicide.

Dead bang.

If your defense is that you “feared for your life”, shouldn’t you have to prove that the black man who said that he had a concealed carry license and was armed, sitting in his car with his hands on the steering wheel, when you shot him to death was actually a threat? When he didn’t reach for his gun because he knew that that was death sentence? That wasn’t a police action, that was an execution.

Shouldn’t they all be held to a higher standard than civilians? And if not, why not?

It’s late at night, the weekend and I’m kicking back with a few dabs under the belt, so it’s time for a bit of a story!
Up until two weeks ago, we had a Penny problem here at our home.

“Hi! I’m Penny!”

She is named Penny because my wife named her Penelope shortly after we noticed her. When she moved in to our garage I started calling her Penny and thus she became Penelope/Penny. Penny came knocking on our garage door (OK, actually she was meowing outside it) after midnight one very stormy evening late last November. Frankly, my wife and I were quite happy (and relieved) that she decided to drop in for a stay. Unfortunately, this guy was not happy about her deciding to come over and check out his awesome home.

“I’m Stewie and I do not endorse this candidate”

But as I pointed out to Stewie, it’s his fault for bringing her plight to our attention. My wife and I first noticed Penny late last summer when we noticed that Stewie was across the street trying to get her fight him. Stewie is neutered but he learned some bad habits from an old orange cat that used to beat him up on occasion when he was much younger. Now he thinks he owns the neighborhood (and at 17 pounds, he pretty much does), thus his challenging the new cat. I went out, stopped the war before it began and chased Stewie home. This would repeat many times until Stewie got it through his thick head that even if he was able to attack her, he still had to get home through me. Eventually he got my messages and stopped harassing her.

As far as my wife and I can figure, her owners threw her out because she had horrible gas because they overfed her with cheap cat food, causing her to get so fat that her belly drooped over her privates which prevented her from cleaning herself. Add diarrhea to this and you have the recipe for disaster. In fact, disaster is a fine word to describe her then owners and their family. I’ll just describe them as people who have too much money and too little brains. Lots of police action at times, the never ending entertainment of their grandson and his procession of vehicles that he’s destroyed (along with my neighbor’s garage door one time) and too much more to mention. Suffice it to say that we know little about them and want to keep it that way. In the eleven years that we have lived across from them, we only thought they had two dogs that they keep indoors. Being that Penny is estimated to be about 6-7 years old, she was an indoor cat along with the dogs until they ruined her and tossed her out of the house.

My wife and I watched Penny throughout late summer and early-mid fall, noticing that her owners would almost always ignore her when they were outside. During one storm they finally let her in the house when she wouldn’t stop meowing on the front porch. They barely missed her with their cars numerous times in the driveway, not caring if the cat got out of the way or not. When she first started venturing out into the street, she panicked when confronted by a car and laid down in the street. After me chasing her out of the street a bunch of times, she figured out traffic and started avoiding it.

After seeing her meowing plaintively at strangers because she was so lonely, I started going over to the sidewalk in front of their house (when the crazies weren’t around) and giving her some badly needed attention. Even though she was overweight, once a day I would slip her a few Whiskas treats just because it was a nice gesture and I’m sure her food was real shit. That’s how it was, her living outside and under a trailer on the side of their house (another hilarious story in itself) until the night she decided that her owners just weren’t worth it and ventured over to see if there was a room for her at our place. There was but I had to convince Stewie and this guy:

“Hi, I’m Morty and I like to climb stuff!”

While Morty always tried to get in Penny’s face, when he would eventually do so he was pretty much at a loss as to what to do next. Since she was more than three times his weight, all she had to do was fall on him and the fight would be over. Fortunately for Morty, Penny was scared of the little Scottish shit and she never lit into him. Stewie was not as fortunate as Penny eventually started taking advantage of me protecting her and started strafe-attacking Stewie when he wasn’t looking. All Stewie would do is look mournfully at me like he was saying “I’m being good and she’s not!”, to which I would chastise/chase Penny to let her know that she was being a turd. A few times when I wasn’t near and Stewie had had enough of her crap, he would briefly light into her ass and walk away with his tail straight in the air, showing her his ass. While there was a sort of detente, we needed to find Penny a forever home that was all hers.

Notice that Morty isn’t around…

The assholes across the street knew that she was living over here as she was always in our yard and lying in chairs in our garage all spring and summer, right where they could see her. At first Penny would run to her old home just about every time someone came out but after being repeatedly ignored, she eventually only went over there to shit in their flower beds (good kitty!). We took Penny to the vet and had her checked out as a stray that found us. There was no chip so that was great, and she was in great health other than being overweight (23 lbs!) and a bad case of fleas. We put her on Revolution for flea control, the same as our cats, and we put her on a diet of Blue Buffalo Weight Control food with a few Whiskas a day for treats. The improved diet solved the diarrhea and the best part was that she liked it.

By mid summer Penny was down to a much better 18 pounds and she could once again groom herself without a problem. The best news for Penny came this spring after a couple of good friends told us the bad news that their girl kitty of 20 years passed away. Her husband had his heart set on eventually getting them a kitten but I was a sneak and introduced his wife to Penny, whom she fell in love with. A few weeks ago he stopped by and told me that his wife wanted an “established cat” as in one that knows how to kill mice and I suggested Penny as she is a very active cat and loves hunting stuff. He told me that his wife fell in love with her and so the deal was done. That evening they picked Penny up with a good supply of food and treats, taking her to her new home where Rogue, a one year old Boston terrorist waited for cat training.

He stopped by earlier today and told me that Penny has convinced Rogue that while he wants to play, he will give her the space that she wants. All is well in her new home and she is fitting right in (or making room for herself, more likely). About a week ago I heard the granddaughter across the street exclaim “Where’s that fucking cat!”, which is the only reference I have ever heard them make about Penny. My thought was “She’s where she is safe, loved and cared for, so fuck you.”

Now that’s a happy ending… :) Bonus pic, Morty doing what he does best:

Being an asshole.

TBH Kavanaugh’s rise in the judiciary is entirely a thank you for his work with Ken Starr in the 90’s and Bush’s administration in the 00’s. The man is not your typical judge at all. Morning!

I just listened to the George Li Tiny Desk concert.

Damn he is good. I love his facial expressions and they way he moves his arms to get a feel to his timing.

As a drummer, I understand that as you can alter your stroke length and the like to vary your timing.

The first and third pieces are great and he really can play fast clearly and with dynamics.

But the second slower piece really blew me away because is was so delicate. And to me the slower piece really shows how good he is because I think it is much harder to play slow as well as he does as any change or little “off” shows. Faster pieces can mask those tiny little misses in my opinion. I think that way for guitar too.

Started playing at 4, playing publicly at 10, comes in second at a major international piano contest at 15…then off to Harvard for a double degree.

Yeah, he is motivated.

And so what is that bullshit I hear about some hate for Asians by the likes of Bannon and even The Orange Donny?

This young man has more going for him in one hand than both those fat ass ugly White bigot hater dudes ever will in their whole body and lengthy careers.

I’m not comfortable with it either, but sometimes we have to experience uncomfortable things. Teleskiguy wasn’t using the word as coming from him however, he was channeling (so to speak) the attitude of Bristol Palin and the rest of the Alt-Right faction too many of the Palins and their sycophants adhere to.

Read it as Palin’s words, not teleskiguy’s. Teleskiguy is blunt but he’s not racist. I’ve known him for 9 years, and disagreed with many things he’s said, but he’s never given me the idea he’s racist in any way.

re: #122 SteveMcGriftFlynnComey… …corruptemoligate RN

IIRC Paul was trolling John Lennon I guess referring to his entourage. John had a song trolling Paul called How Do You Sleep. At least that’s the story I heard

No story on the Lennon song. Pretty dang obvious.

I know the song well, because I always liked the guitar rhythm…that down falling sawing grind is so Lennon. And George helped on it too.

The Lyrics…pretty cutting on ol’ Paul.

How Do You Sleep
John Lennon

So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise
You better see right through that mother’s eyes
Those freaks was right when they said you was dead
The one mistake you made was in your head

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

You live with straights who tell you, you was king
Jump when your momma tell you anything
The only thing you done was yesterday
And since you’re gone you’re just another day

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

A pretty face may last a year or two
But pretty soon they’ll see what you can do
The sound you make is muzak to my ears
You must have learned something in all those years

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

Has anyone put up any of his music here before??? Anyone heard of him? I guess he has a few albums. I need to do some more searching into his songwriting/music.

And by the way…my new favorite music discovery site is Jam in the Van.

Check it out. And if anyone ever says there is no good music these days…slap ‘em upside the head and then make them go to this site and click around on all the great talent.

My point is that they weren’t words from teleskiguy. Had he said them in his own voice I would agree with you. He was repeating an attitude from someone else. He couldn’t use quotes because they were an acknowledged paraphrase of the attitude.

No need to panic when you say something here. As far as Karma levels are concerned they don’t mean as much as we would like them to.

I’m seeing some political pundits are saying it was unprecedented for a former president to call out a current president. They go on to say it is dangerous because it will stir up Trump’s base and energize them.

Well too f’n bad.

Trump is unprecedented and I have no problem with using any political tactics to stop him.

Our country is under attack from within.

If you bitch about Obama doing what he is doing I am willing to call you an enemy of this country.

Trump’s breaking or ignoring virtually every political norm, standard, behavior
His staff are manipulating and managing him
He may have improperly influenced his own election

How dare Obama…speak

Trump is a lobotomized black swan. Normal tactics and approaches won’t do much, and we have to do something.

Study history and note how Teddy Roosevelt trashed Wilson OR how Hoover trashed FDR or Truman.

These gasbags are too lazy to do research!

Research is only half the problem
They dont really care what was true or could be proved

What matters is the narrative they are trying to create now
It’s the new truth

Weeknds are made for rockin’ right?

On my quest to discovering female rockers I came across this tribute band. Usually I don’t like tribute bands. In my opinion they often fall a little short.

These ladies do so well they could have replaced the band they are honoring live. If the audience closed their eyes they may have never known who was playing.

I know, I saw the original band, and live sometimes they were a little too loose.

I would be proud of these women covering my material.

Can these women rock? You tell me.

Zepparella!

The NYC equivalent is a really good band called Lez Zeppelin. They are excellent. I played in a band with the bass player for a while, and the lead singer is the current emcee for my buds in the live karaoke band.

I’m doing a show with her (and the karaoke band) at the Hard Rock in Atlantic City tomorrow night. Always fun.

In that thread is a link to an article about a book about right-wing election hacking
conwaydailysun.com

He used as an example the 2004 presidential election between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat John Kerry.

“Kerry was leading in Ohio, which was the critical state, and then something flipped at 11:14 at night,” said Simon.

He explained that the vote-counting computer servers in Ohio suddenly crashed when Kerry was leading by 3.5 percent. They were then rerouted to Tennessee to be handled by a company called SmarTech, which was run by the late Michael Connell, who was Karl Rove’s “IT guru.

“Votes went to Chattanooga, Tennessee; servers came back up; votes were sent back from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to all the county websites; and all of a sudden, Bush was winning by 3.5 percent,” Simon said, adding that it was explained by “late voting evangelicals.”

Simon said Connell died in a plane crash two weeks before he was supposed to testify in court regarding a lawsuit to challenge the legitimacy of the 2004 elections.

Yeah…I’ve watched her too.

There are some damn fine female guitar players there days. I love ‘em!!!

When I got out of high school and started playing drums and following bands, even doing some roadie work with a regional act, there were not many female guitar players like what I am seeing today.

I wish there would have been, it would have been fun jamming with women.

And bass players…drummers…keyboards too.

Rock on women…rock on!

And my precinct was one of the ones in question for Ohio SoS Ken Blackwell fuckery.

I was skeptical of fuckery at the time but after knowing what I know about 2016, the Nixon fuckery in ‘68, & the 2000 election shenanigans I really wouldn’t put it past the GOP to past pull that shit in 2004.

And if you planned it all that way…great job.
