So, the Senators that confirmed Kavanaugh represent 44.2% of the population.

At the end of the article, the writer included this:

There are two responses that are sure to ensue from this article and that I will dispatch with here, long past any of those eager to offer them will have stopped reading.

The first is the common complaint that polling is hopelessly flawed and inaccurate, a complaint that is generally offered only about polls that the reader doesn’t like. Anyway, it’s not true.

The second is that America is a republic, don’t you know, and this is how the system was built to work. To which the curt response is that, yes, as someone who writes about politics for a living, I am aware of the Senate and the electoral college. It is worth noting, though, that this structure can at times conflict with the precept that all men are created equal.

I got an email from MoveOn, and while I agree with most of it, they’re either trying to pull the wool over people or can’t do percentages properly:

And if you think this upcoming election is in the bag, it’s not. New polling data shows a spike in Republican enthusiasm about the midterm elections, suggesting higher-than-expected Republican turnout. Now, the number of Democrats and Republicans who say the November elections are “very important” is a statistical tie.

That not actually what it means when the percentages are the same, since the number of self-identified Democrats is at 40% of the voting population while it’s at 28% for Republicans.

That’s not to discount that this is going to be a very tight election and we need to harness that anger to get people to vote.

I think they are going after the media narrative that Kavanaugh’s treatment has now made this race a tossup. I’ve heard it several times already. Bill Maher mentioned it last night. Local news here in Columbus has made that part of their reports.

Everyone wants and loves a horse race in the media.

It might just be smart to go with the talk going around so to fight it.

These numbers (i.e. Dem leads) are way the hell too close for comfort. It’s looking like Heitkamp’s seat is gone :( (then again, she was also far behind in polls prior to winning in 2012, so…massive Dem turnout in ND could save her yet):

For the GOP this was worth allowing and condoning an attack on our electoral system by a foreign adversary. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh were illegitimate from November 2016.

But we’re stuck with them. Time to move onward to November 2018 and 2020 and beyond.

I grew up in an evangelical right wing end times Amway family. My parents were double diamond direct distributors in the early days of that company. This is why I can’t discount the bullshit claim from McConnell and idiots about ‘you made us do this’. Yes, it’s bullshit, but it’s effective bullshit for those who waffle, and it seems to work on those desperate to look ‘independent’. And because hate is the fucking most powerful thing in politics. 357 are a bigger and more powerful round, but because of that are more expensive to use in target shooting by a lot, and are mostly made as revolvers rather than semi-auto. (Many also take 38 special round, which have the same limitations and benefits, but less so.)

9mm are smaller and probably the most common round after the .22, which makes them cheaper to train with (by about half, last I checked). They are also more commonly made as semi-autos, if you like that sort of thing.

That’s actually a pretty good result in the Senate. We face literally the most brutal election map in a century - we’re defending 26 seats, they’re defending 9. Many of those seats are in heavily Trump states.

The probability of taking the Senate, according to Nate Silver, was never better than 1 in 3, and now it’s a little less than 1 in 4.

Turnout is EVERYTHING.

Welp… I think I am going to get written out of the will for this one.

If you think that Brett Kavanaugh’s selection to the Supreme Court is a good thing purely on the basis of abortion, or Obamacare, or because he is a Republican, then we are going to have an issue. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Being pro-life is more than just being anti-abortion, being a Christian is more than being a Republican, and being an American means fairly and justly investigating all allegations, not railroading a candidate with serious and credible allegations against him into a seat on the highest court of appeal just because you have a political majority.

I’m fine with him. Or with any Democrat. But Schumer in particular (like Reid before him) knows where all the levers of power are and how to pull them. And he’s been fighting so hard from the minority side all these years. The Senate still respects seniority, and he’s earned it.

I am vehemently opposed to getting caught up in internecine infighting.

What are the relative merits of each? Asking as someone who has never shot anything except a .22 at my Granddad’s farm and in Boy Scouts.

9mm: lots of available firearms and amm o. NATO standard. Good performance in its intended role. For practical purposes only available in semi-auto pistols, many of which are designed to be easy to carry but are not easy to shoot. Lots of practice needed for the little ones. I would probably be looking for a surplus Star BM. Not as compact but easier to shoot.

.38 special/+P/.357 Magnum: the ultimate evolution of the police revolver. Smith and Wesson, a 4” barrel, and blue steel like the cop shows of the past. Performance ranges from puffball .38 special for target shooting to firebreathing magnums fit to stop bears all from the same gun. Absolute reliability - I’ve seen k frames that were not touched for decades be picked up and fired perfectly. Autos aren’t going to do that ;) modern revolvers can do 7 or 8 rounds.

Why yes, I’m a old revolver guy. :D

BUT WE ARE NOT BEATEN YET. This will be discouraging for a lot of people, but if we can break the air of inevitability and get back on the offensive, we’ve already seen that there are more of us than there are of them. We CAN make a difference in 2018, and maybe get rid of some of these evil fuckers if we elect the right people. It’s most important to get out there and BE PASSIONATE. DON’T QUIT. When you add in the availably of firearms, that is definitely true, especially if you’re looking to get proficient rather than just being able to say “I has gun.” I bought a 357 a while back on a fluke (some cop was selling it for $100 or so), which I took to a range a couple of times before I realized I didn’t have $90 to spare every time I wanted to send a reasonable amount of rounds down the lane. Now it just sits around collecting dust.

My bow, on the other hand, I can plink around with for hours and never need to buy a new arrow.

re: #62 Eclectic Cyborg

Wait, is there ANOTHER Trump rally tonight?

JFC.

He is now in campaign mode and on the road to help all this election’s Republican candidates.

He will do this talking one minute about the candidate and then on to talking about himself. A lot, much of what is now familiar.

I think I saw where he has these schedule for the next three weeks.

Yes, it is another Trump rally. More coming.

Run on Trump, and say nothing. He will speak for you.

And the bad thing, it works for them.

Doesn’t seem ethical… Is it? It seems he’s flying somewhere every night for his “Fascism in Motion” rallies. WTF?

He is doing his damnedest not to lose in November because he knows if he does, it is the end of his political career and his life as a free man. Ethics went out the window on January 20, 2017.

I did archery in Boy Scouts, too. I sucked, but I loved it.

The ironic thing to me is, if Trump had never gotten elected, he never would have come under such severe scrutiny. He may have been able to fly just under the radar until he died of old age, syphilis, or cirrhosis of the liver. His sudden appearance under the spotlight of the Mueller investigation guaranteed his eventual downfall; now it is just a matter of timing, to which he is reacting by trying to draw it out as long as possible. I’m going to do my best to make sure that does NOT happen.

OT, but in the previous conversation on handguns and bows I revealed that I was a BSA dude. Actually, I am an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow veteran. It’s kind of a wonder to remember that to myself now—hey, I spent a night in the woods in northern Wisconsin alone with a tin can and water, a 1/4 lb of hamburger, a knife, a flint and tender kit, and insect repellent. I made a fire, made a sapling burger-holder, made fiddlehead fern soup in the tin can, and basically stayed up all night in my lean-to tending the fire because I was scared of bears. I didn’t know that adults were walking around making sure we were ok until later. Oh and the day of silence the next day! Fun tour down memory lane.

Trump to Mitch, “Look I have no idea what the fuck happened, but I didn’t think I would win. Our friends the Russians had better results than expected. They own me. I’m in over my head here!!!”

Mitch: “You got the job, let me run the show, you do and say what we want. You get to jet around and act like a President. We get to shove through all the tax cuts, legislation and conservative judges we could ever dream of.

You benefit, you get to be on TV, we protect you and you sign what we put in front of you. They will love you and Fox will make sure of that. I’ll call the Russians and work this out with them. I have contacts too.”

Heh. I’ve never told anyone this outside of meatspace friends and the family who know, but I underwent the same rigors and rituals - but it was a religiously indoctrinated version, co-opted by an evangelical sect to infuse their young boys/men with religious fervor as well as outdoorsman skills. So while I’m the equivalent of an Eagle Scout, the BSA would never recognize me as such.

I was never a scout, but I caught a bluegill in the Wisconsin woods. My uncle showed me how to clean it (by cleaning the ones he caught). I cleaned it and ate it. And I hit the paper plate stuck on a tree, with a BB gun, first try.

I’m ok. I did once manage to (completely by accident) robin-hood two aluminum arrows so tightly that they’re still stuck together on my mantle. So, as far as anyone else knows, I’m Green Arrow come to life. And I do as little to disabuse them of that notion as I can.

Nicely done! Cleaning fish is above my pay grade, but my mom learned from an excellent tutor. Her dad was the local fisherman-guru, and her mom cleaned and fried all sorts of fish. She was “lucky” enough to get to help in the kitchen.

I keep meaning to look into that, but there’s a part of me that wants someone professional to handle the explody stuff. I’m sure I could do it, but that first shot is still a bit of a leap of faith…
