Because they’re all dicks? (I’ll see myself out now…)
Remember back when Motel 6 decided to leave a light on for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and turn over guests “with Latino-sounding names” for deportation? The motel chain’s decision to moonlight as mass deportation agents is set to cost the company millions, following legal action from a group of Latino guests racially profiled by the motel chain in Arizona and Washington state.
“Motel 6 will pay up to $7.6 million to Hispanic guests to settle a proposed class-action lawsuit claiming that it violated their privacy by regularly providing guest lists” to ICE, Reuters reports. “Motel 6 also agreed to a two-year consent decree barring it from sharing guest data with immigration authorities absent warrants, subpoenas, or threats of serious crime or harm.”
That probably should have been the policy all along, except it wasn’t, and it’s going to be an expensive mistake: “up to $5.6 million will go to Motel 6 guests who faced immigration removal proceedings after their personal information was shared,” Reuters continues. Last fall, Motel 6 admitted that motel employees regularly shared guest information with ICE. In two Arizona locations, agents conducted at least 20 arrests between February 2017 and August 2017 without any arrests at surrounding motels during that same period.

OK: other than being very skeeved by the phrase “prominent American Islamophobes with ties to the Admin and Congressional GOP” - I’m curious as to what the MPs are actually worried about: is this Tommy Robinson (who I’ve never heard of before) likely to bring a gang of aggro skinheads with him to, what? Go down to a street corner and try to whip up a mob to go stone a mosque, or whatever?
I mean, I’d naturally prefer these bigoted foreign cretins stay home and pollute the discourse in their own countries, rather than ours: but what am I missing about the “threat of violence”?

If they did, then you should let all the votes be countered but you, Voldemort, your racist pal DeSantis, and your little buddy Rubio don’t want that.
Democrats also picked up 12 seats in the Texas State House. Before, the ratio was 95-55 R-D, and was really close to being a supermajority for Republicans, which would have really sucked. Now, it’s 83-67. Current rules require 100 members to meet to be a quorum.

It’s been obvious from the comments from the campaigns that Sinema is going to win AZ. I thought Nelson in Florida was a longer shot, but that tweet from Trump is pretty much a confirmation that they are petrified that their giant ‘win’ in the Senate is going to turn out to be nothing from a terrible map for the Democrats.

Not quite “nothing” (even if disappointing from King Orangeanus’ view): the Senate GOP is still going to have enough of an edge that hanging together under Mitch McTurtle’s iron-fisted control is going to let them fundamentally set the Senate agenda - the handful of GOP Senate “mavericks” have been replaced (AFAICT) by dutiful Trump-worshiping hacks - and it doesn’t seem likely that their Leader is going to change much.
One the positive side, though, with a Democratic-controlled House, the worst they can do is block/neuter legislation they don’t like (i.e. anything Dem); they will probably be unable to push much of Trump’s agenda (such as it is) on their own.
On the other hand, they will be able to ram through as many RWNJ nominees as they can bring up: on strict party-line votes, no doubt: but as we saw from the Kavanaugh nomination circus, they could care less about “comity”.
To Republicans, any votes for any Democrat is fraudulent.

So they all spoke too soon and created a narrative
Now they have no place to go
it can no longer be about accuracy and every vote counts and the most votes wins no matter how long it takes to count
Now it’s about any argument any tactic so the narrative doesn’t change
They can’t possibly admit to being “,wrong”

So glad wildfire season is over. A fire came within two miles of my house this summer. The Lake Christine Fire to the south of me scorched 15,000 acres and polluted the air in the valley for over a month. The east/west thoroughfare I-70 closed several times this summer due to fires.
I guess there’s no fire season in California anymore, it’s a year-round threat. *sigh*

That’s right, not in the mood. The GOP apparently wants this:
Before the hearing, Brett Johnson, attorney for the Republicans, said the lawsuit seeks to require all counties to contact voters after Election Day so their ballots can be counted.
There are 600,000 mail in ballots, these guys want to fucking EVISCERATE the whole notion of mail-in ballots by requiring contact. Fuck these asshats.

Spree shootings being public, are much more likely to get national attention. Workplace violence seems to only get such attention if it has a high body count, and family murders if they have a large count or the people aren’t the white colour.

By way of comparison, my town covers appx 9 square miles, with a population of just over 60k

Wow. So yeah, I decided to go looking through Steam for flight simulators on a lark, saw they had ye olde Microsoft FSX on there. Cost of game with all the DLC (i.e. aircraft) they’ve added since it was released to Steam? Almost $5,000.
Yeah, the DLC is optional, but still.

My rental house in Montecito had sprinklers built onto the roof. They were basically just for psychological reassurance though since the roof had wood shingles and siding and the house was surrounded by mature trees. I did turn the sprinklers on during the Tea Fire, mostly just to see if they actually worked.
I went back this Spring after the mudslide to gawk, the house was a very modest beautiful 1960’s craftsman ranch style built by my landlady’s father, who also was the contracted builder for the Vedanta temple just up the street, designed by architect Lutah Riggs. The new owners of my old place were in the midst of tacking on a modernist cubic monstrosity addition and making everything horrible.
Or to paralyze them with laughter.

Watching your house burn, live on television. That would definitely suck.
As for watching a town burn, that seems sort of like pyro-porn to me; I’ll pass.
After seeing the photographs that came out of Fort McMurray, this doesn’t look like it’s going to fare much better.
The guy in the helicopter was noting one of the problems with this fire as it burns houses is that palm trees next to them don’t just burn; they explode at the base and launch a burning missile palm tree in any direction up to a couple blocks away. They showed one on camera doing that, with the palm tree smashing into the side of a house and starting that house on fire.
This is awful.

So if Skeletor fails to survive the recount, that would mean that the “Kavanaugh bump” took down only a single vulnerable Dem: Heitkamp. Every other Dem who voted against him (told that it would cost them reelection) either retained their seat or passed it on to a Dem successor. Despite 26 possible pick-ups including ones in states that Trump won, a Scott loss would put them back where they started last year: 52 seats.

Claire McCaskill is on line 2 and would like to have a word…
That’s right. I think honestly McCaskill is going to be the last statewide Dem that Missouri will have for awhile. Missouri seems to be going from historical swing state to red state. Happens on the other side too. I think Virginia is blue to stay and Colorado as well.
Locals know this, but as the sun comes up and makes a little heat, watch the Santa Ana winds really pickup. This is gonna get harder before it gets better if the usual pattern holds.
Greets and saluts from the NYC Metro area. There were marches nationwide last night to support protecting the ongoing Mueller investigation.
Trump fired Sessions. The direct and proximate cause for firing is because Sessions recused himself from interfering in the Mueller investigation. That’s it.
Trump fired him because he wants someone who will interfere and end the investigation into his criminal misconduct. That’s why he elevated (or thinks he can elevate) Whitaker to the post.
Turns out that Whitaker’s record is one that would make Peter Strzok blush in partisanship. Whitaker took positions and pushed policies in an official capacity that were highly partisan, despite being in role that should be nonpartisan.
If Strzok’s comments were disqualifying and fire-able offenses, then Whitaker’s are ones that elevate you to the AG? Only in Trumpworld.
Meanwhile, Trump and GOP continue to do nothing except promote gun sales in the wake of another mass shooting - the worst since the last one 12 days ago.
Thoughts and prayers are a dodge and deflection to do nothing by public officials who have an obligation to do something to protect the general welfare. The GOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NRA (itself a Russia branch). They are compromised and complicit, and now that the House control is back in the hands of Democrats, there’s a chance we’ll see some action - at least from the House.

Some of the slopes at Woolsey really do resemble the character of the blow furnaces at work. In recent months we have refined scrap jewelry that had burned in the previous set of wildfires. Rick Scott is annoyed because after all his efforts at voter disenfranchisement and suppression, he might lose. But he’s not really being a cry baby — after all, these tactics worked in 2000 to shut down a recount and send us on a trajectory from which we haven’t recovered. With the aid of Trump, he is hoping to interfere with the recount and guarantee himself another position he can use to destroy our nation.

He’ll survive long enough to do what Nunes couldn’t and traffic all the relevant documentation from the Mueller investigation he can to the White House, before they suddenly ask him to vacate the AG’s office.
Jennifer Rubin lays it out nice this morning (in a layout that is not so nice for copy/paste):
Confirmation bias at work:
Thousands of people retweet and like tweet claiming that Mueller’s going to be arrested Junior imminently (the acct making the claim is @sayshummingbird).
Few folks take the time to understand that this person doesn’t have any special insight, sources, or knowledge of the process.
It’s wish fulfillment.
Yes, I’d like to see the perpwalk, but is there anything in Mueller’s history that suggests that he’s leaking anything about anything he’s doing or has already done? He’s running as tight a ship as anyone could ever do under the circumstances. There’s no way he’s leaking.
Even when people try to figure out what he’s doing re: EDVA rocket docket filings, they’re inscrutable. He’s that good at holding the cards close and his indictment list even closer. That’s because he’s holding the entire deck. It’s left to others to speculate as to what he’s doing. There are logical inferences to be had - he’s working up the chain of conspiracy, based on who he’s indicted and obtained plea deals from thus far. That means there’s only a handful of people left - and nearly all of them are in Trump’s family and inner circle.
There’s also those on the periphery that he could go after, like the Roger Stone, Jerome Corsi, Assange, and Wikileaks angle, but the ones that people want to see are central to Trumpworld.
And that’s also why Trump is so desperate to end Mueller’s investigations - he knows that Mueller’s silence also means that he’s winding up for a big reveal now that the election is done. He must know how much dirt investigators have on him, and that’s before the Democrats dig in to all the rank criminality since Trump took office.

I think it’s possible that he’s just been ‘appointed’ to draw fire and change the subject from the midterm ass-kicking Trump got. As more information comes out (see Adam Pahramenko’s Twitter timeline, the guy is just fucking toxic), Trump will name a loyalist like Pam Bondi who won’t seem completely terrible by comparison.
Whitaker is just standing up to draw fire. He’ll never become AG.
re: #330 makeitstop
Bondi is just as much a partisan hack, and the $25k she took as a “donation” while dropping her state’s investigation into Trump’s scam school shows that she’s bought and paid for by Trump.
Politico is reporting that Christie is only being considered for AG because two other candidates have turned the job down (they don’t name who, although Labor Sec Alex Acosta said he’d only accept the job once Mueller is done with his report). They’re also saying Trump’s in no hurry to fill the job.
The smart people are not going to chance getting between Trump and Mueller.

It’s true he’s a lightning rod, but it’s also true that it’s going to take time for him to get a replacement in the position. So every day that goes by with Whitaker in the office is a day that is going to haunt the DOJ when a lawyer challenges anything that he either knew or signed off on during his “tenure.”

Bondi is just as much a partisan hack, and the $25k she took as a “donation” while dropping her state’s investigation into Trump’s scam school shows that she’s bought and paid for by Trump.
Yes, we know that.
But stand her up against Whitaker, who says that Russia didn’t interfere at all with the 2016 election, and suddenly she looks pretty reasonable, no?
re: #332 makeitstop
Politico is reporting that Christie is only being considered for AG because two other candidates have turned the job down (they don’t name who, although Labor Sec Alex Acosta said he’d only accept the job once Mueller is done with his report). They’re also saying Trump’s in no hurry to fill the job.
The smart people are not going to chance getting between Trump and Mueller.
I imagine most of them understand that this is Donny’s own attempt at a Saturday Night Massacre, that if they take the job they’re going to be facing a lot of questions about whether or not they’ll allow Mueller to do his job and release his report. The person who ultimately takes the job will be the one who feels the most comfortable lying through their teeth on national TV.

Many years ago, a cousin (my father’s generation) had found a job by understating her age by 10 years. She worked there for many years but then when her real age reached 65, she wanted to retire. Let’s just say it took awhile before she could straighten out the paperwork and receive the Social Security and pension benefits she was entitled to.
( Certainly her pension would be underfunded because the costs were understated — but it was a large employer, so the harm there was minimal.)

Yep. Looked like before things started changing in FL and AZ that they may be able to polish that turd but now it looks very possible he could only have a net gain of one seat. in the Senate despite the Senate map being very favorable to him and his party with all those ruby red state Dems up. It’s the beginning of the end for him and he knows it. He’s going to be a lame duck in many ways.

Federal prosecutors have evidence of Trump’s participation in hush-money payments to women, contradicting two years of denials by Trump, his legal team and his advisers—and raising the possibility that the president violated federal campaign-finance laws. https://t.co/IqNkLHYHW5

Why can’t our media state that even Trump’s most obvious lies are lies? https://t.co/rZgfDk0vbd

“…Playing along in any way with the gaslighter in chief — by for example being unwilling to write a story whose headline and lede simply state that Trump is lying about not knowing the man he just appointed to quash the Mueller investigation — ultimately enables the totalitarian logic of truth being whatever the Leader says it is at any given moment. “

In the 2016 Election I was winning by so much in Florida that Broward County, which was very late with vote tabulation and probably getting ready to do a “number,” couldn’t do it because not enough people live in Broward for them to falsify a victory!

I’ve been watching the fate of Bruce Poliquin, the very last GOP Congressman from NE. Because neither candidate got over 50% of the vote, Maine’s new ranked vote system is supposed to go into effect, and its believed that the Democrat Jared Golden will win in that round. Poliquin holds a slim lead in the initial vote, so he may challenge the legality of ranked choice voting in court.

And most of the mentions since are now the “where are all the stories about the caravan now?” Oh yeah, they’ve disappeared because this was never a threat.
It was baffling racist BS to gin up the bigotry and white nationalism/xenophobia to 11ty.
IN SHS next press conference, if the media doesn’t boycott it, they should only ask her questions about her use of falsified evidence to silence Jim Acosta. Question after question after question until the news conference is over.

He’s panicking. Good. Fuck him.
“America’s Got Talent” alum Benton Blount abruptly lost his opening-act gig on ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons’ concert tour after his pro-Trump Facebook post got him temporarily banned from the social media website.
Blount was four shows into the seven-show slot when he learned he was kicked off the tour, South Carolina’s Greenville News reported.
The post showed Blount wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat and an “I Voted” sticker on Election Day while holding a Chick-Fil-A sandwich and drink. The photo carried the caption, “Someone reading this just got offended multiple times. My work here is done! #Vote.”
“Drove down here (Atlanta) from Greenville, South Carolina to the venue. I get a call from my friend from California who informs me that not only have I been banned from Facebook but as a result from being banned from Facebook I was pulled off of the Billy Gibbons tour, effectively immediately,” Blount said in a Facebook Live video.

But they won’t because they’re aloof to the danger we’re all in.

I went into a Twitter wormhole and discovered all the Star Trek TNG gang are on the right side of history. Picard, Number One, Data and Troi.
I started when Marina Sirtis got bitched out by Snoop WhateverAnimalHeIsThisWeek because he was tired of her politics (which is weird coz he is no rightie, but I digress) where he unfollowed her and she blocked his ass. Which of course Data chimed in. So I looked at all their timelines and was happy since TNG is my fav ST flavor.

Then parents and grandparents should be able to get life insurance policies for those fertilized eggs. And considering that only 30% of conceptions make it to actual live birth, insurance companies are going to paying out a SHIT LOAD of claims.
