They’ll need 20 Republicans in the Senate to get to 67 votes. And we were short in the House of the 290 needed. But I suspect if the Senate gets to 67-70 votes, we might see some House Republicans jump ship too on a veto override vote.
Latest Pew survey finds 59% of Americans think immigrants strengthen the country, 34% that they’re a burden. That’s a complete reversal from 1994, when it was 31% strengthen/63% burden, and way more positive than in the mid-Obama era, though down from 65% strengthen in 2017.

The Alarming Scope of the President’s Emergency Powers
From seizing control of the internet to declaring martial law, President Trump may legally do all kinds of extraordinary things
We live in a different universe today. Although interpreting a 1942 law to cover the internet might seem far-fetched, some government officials recently endorsed this reading during debates about cybersecurity legislation. Under this interpretation, Section 706 could effectively function as a “kill switch” in the U.S.—one that would be available to the president the moment he proclaimed a mere threat of war. It could also give the president power to assume control over U.S. internet traffic.
The potential impact of such a move can hardly be overstated. In August, in an early-morning tweet, Trump lamented that search engines were “RIGGED” to serve up negative articles about him. Later that day the administration said it was looking into regulating the big internet companies. “I think that Google and Twitter and Facebook, they’re really treading on very, very troubled territory. And they have to be careful,” Trump warned. If the government were to take control of U.S. internet infrastructure, Trump could accomplish directly what he threatened to do by regulation: ensure that internet searches always return pro-Trump content as the top results. The government also would have the ability to impede domestic access to particular websites, including social-media platforms. It could monitor emails or prevent them from reaching their destination. It could exert control over computer systems (such as states’ voter databases) and physical devices (such as Amazon’s Echo speakers) that are connected to the internet.
The bogus cover to allow Trump to violate the constitution now and prevent someone else from doing it in the future. Tillis is ignoring his oath of office and the role of Congress. https://t.co/Ek82quqXm9

re: #22 Scottish Dragon
Beto should stick with flipping Texas. He would be of far more use in the senate right now.
Castro made the argument in an interview when he announced that he believes a Texas Democrat can do more to help flip the Texas by running for president than by running statewide.
There’s probably some merit to that in that Texas is traditionally a pretty low turnout state. It’s turnout was only about 51% in 2016 and somewhere around 46% in 2018 (and those are high turnout years). The idea being that coattails from a Texas Democrat at the presidential level could help down ballot candidates win.
I think the coattails theory actually works both ways, though. If you get good local and/or statewide candidates who can spend the time/resources necessary to do registration drives and GOTV at the local level, that can help higher up the ballot as well.
SANCTIONING AMERICANSNext to war powers, economic powers might sound benign, but they are among the president’s most potent legal weapons. All but two of the emergency declarations in effect today were issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or ieepa. Passed in 1977, the law allows the president to declare a national emergency “to deal with any unusual and extraordinary threat”—to national security, foreign policy, or the economy—that “has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States.” The president can then order a range of economic actions to address the threat, including freezing assets and blocking financial transactions in which any foreign nation or foreign national has an interest.
Gives him the power to go after Democrats and high profile adversaries.
Again, if he loses an election and is looking at jail time, what does he have to lose?

He traveled all over the state, multiple times, in 2017 and 2018. He built a network of people, and set up campaign offices in places that hadn’t seen a Democratic one before (for instance, Rockwall, which went 75% for Cruz, had a Beto office). He did a great job of increasing the numbers, as we saw by the turnout. And it wasn’t enough against Cruz. Now, try that against the number 2 in the Senate, who is liked by the GOP here.

This is the big one: The one he can use to come after all of us and stop protests and arrest outspoken liberals.
The Insurrection Act of 1807 provides the necessary authority. As amended over the years, it allows the president to deploy troops upon the request of a state’s governor or legislature to help put down an insurrection within that state. It also allows the president to deploy troops unilaterally, either because he determines that rebellious activity has made it “impracticable” to enforce federal law through regular means, or because he deems it necessary to suppress “insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy” (terms not defined in the statute) that hinders the rights of a class of people or “impedes the course of justice.”
Unilaterally at his own discretion.
Again, given that he just threatened this sort of thing today, does anybody think he won’t try use troops to keep himself in the White House and arrest or even kill his opponents?

There’s been a couple of polls out in January and February showing O’Rourke either tied or within a couple percentage points of Cornyn (and most importantly with Cornyn under 50%). So there’s at least a chance.
But moving Texas to “swing state” status is going to take a lot of effort up and down the Democratic Party - it’s going to take national help, state level, and local level, plus compelling candidates (plus activists outside the party structures). O’Rourke is a compelling candidate, and it seems he’s tilled the soil for grassroots support. The question is whether the party and activists are willing to spend resources there when everyone is also dedicated to defeating Trump and there are plenty of other targets that are closer than Texas.

What I’ve tried arguing in the past is Trump unlike his predecessors has no respect for democratic government.

The really big problem for him is that it would take a whole lot of people, like 80% of the government, to agree with him. And he’d have to get a number of governors and state legislatures to agree. And while Montana is conservative, troops showing up would be exactly what they don’t want the government to do.

All of his “any means necessary” rely on a lot of other people to go along with it. Looks like Sanders is about to learn the difference between being an alternative choice in a small field and a frontrunner in a large field:
Bernie Sanders advocated for the nationalization of most major industries, including energy companies, factories, and banks, when he was a leading member of a self-described “radical political party” in the 1970s, a CNN KFile review of his record reveals.
Sanders’ past views shed light on a formative period of his political career that could become relevant as he advances in the 2020 Democratic primary.
Many of the positions he held at the time are more extreme compared to the more tempered democratic socialism the Vermont senator espouses today and could provide fodder for moderate Democrats and Republicans looking to cast the Democratic presidential candidate and his beliefs as a fringe form of socialism that would be harmful to the country.
I look forward to him explaining this without yelling at people…

Unilaterally at his own discretion.Again, given that he just threatened this sort of thing today, does anybody think he won’t try use troops to keep himself in the White House and arrest or even kill his opponents?

IIRC, it was closer to 50% in this last election. But, yeah, Texas sucks at voting.

McCain solved that problem by never filing joint returns with his wife. All reporters knew about her finances was what they’d been able to figure out from other sources.

Up to this point, Trump has been violating laws with impunity. Emoluments, nepotism, evading Senate advise and consent and so on and so on.
As long as enough Republicans cover him, he will continue to simply ignore laws and violate them. There is no bottom, and McConnell will cover for Trump in any situation where Trump uses force to remain in office.
I don’t see how this get resolved peacefully at this point if my suspicions are correct and Trump goes full dictator to save his skin from prison.

I’ve had enough of hiding taxes. No taxes no vote from me. If you are playing loose around the edges fuck you. If you’re not ashamed show them.
I see that Cory Gardner doesn’t seem to understand what the role of Congress is within our constitutional system:
Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), another vulnerable incumbent up for re-election next year, also voted against the resolution. He said in a statement after the vote that he stood with Trump because “in the absence of Congressional action, the President did what Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer refused to do.”
Congress acted, Senator. You were there for the votes. Congress considered Trump’s proposal for a wall - multiple times - and decided each and every time that they did not want to authorize building a wall.
re: #90 William Lewis
Same thing? Not even close. I have to go now, but a handful of incompetent officers, scared troops given ammo instead of bayonets is not the same as ordering them to form up and fire on unarmed civilians first thing.
Agree.
MrBWS’s sister (who is a year older than me) was a freshman at Kent State and was on campus that day.
We here are intimately familiar with Kent State. Those kids had no warning at all of what was about to come down on them.

He can. Trump’s actions or there lack of shouldn’t be what we measure ourselves on. If the GOP hits him on it, yes but since he’s a Democratic candidate and not the nominee, he absolutely should be taken to task for it and I say that as a tentative supporter.

I hope you’re right. In the past 2 years we’ve seen and heard things I never expected from a “president”. He keeps pushing more each day and each day he gets less push back. I want to be hopeful that shit won’t happen. But this guy is really fucking dangerous.
What national emergency has he already called?
He’s dancing around one, and he just got a bipartisan vote against him. He is running his mouth more and more and losing Republicans now too.

re: #43 Belafon
He traveled all over the state, multiple times, in 2017 and 2018. He built a network of people, and set up campaign offices in places that hadn’t seen a Democratic one before (for instance, Rockwall, which went 75% for Cruz, had a Beto office). He did a great job of increasing the numbers, as we saw by the turnout. And it wasn’t enough against Cruz. Now, try that against the number 2 in the Senate, who is liked by the GOP here.
THANK YOU.

Sounds like the same critter:
Huntsman spiders, members of the family Sparassidae (formerly Heteropodidae), are known by this name because of their speed and mode of hunting. They also are called giant crab spiders because of their size and appearance.
Also:
More than a thousand Sparassidae species occur in most warm temperate to tropical regions of the world, including much of Australasia, Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean Basin, and the Americas.

re: #172 Belafon
Beto didn’t open it. I think every candidate should have to, but neither Trump nor Sanders released their returns last time. And I don’t really think many other candidates have.
Most contenders and nominees have going back to the 1970s. But how much they release is up to them. In 1980, Reagan (who had long opposed release tax returns) released his returns for 1979. Romney released two years of returns in 2012. Usually, it’s a non-event in the context of a primary or general election. It can tell us a little bit about the candidate’s life (based on various deductions). And it might briefly spark a discussion about the tax code (especially if someone’s effective rate is very low). But I’m not sure most voters really care.
In the case of Trump, given his failure to divest from his businesses and general corruption, it makes sense that they should at least be provided to Congress per the law.

On Thursday, two long-range rockets fired from Gaza streaked toward Tel Aviv, one of Israel’s largest cities. And although no casualties or property damage have been reported so far, Israel is likely to respond forcefully.
Which means an already roiling crisis in the Middle East is likely to deepen.
Red alert sirens indicating incoming rockets sounded in Tel Aviv indicating the first time that the city was a target since 2014. That year, Israel and Gaza engaged in brutal, weeks-long fighting. The Israeli military said its missile defense system, Iron Dome, was launched to intercept the rockets, although it’s unclear if an interception actually took place. The video below shows Iron Dome interceptors flying through the night sky over Tel Aviv, but they self-destructed because an interception was unnecessary.

I actually got quite a bit back, much more than I expected, even with the SALT caps because I ended up giving much more to charity (for reasons unrelated to the tax changes), so my itemized deductions were more. But I got back a little less than in prior years. I probably gained overall—I’d have to balance the slightly lower return with the slightly higher bump I got in my paychecks.

U.S. Senate candidate Kamala Harris and her husband, attorney Douglas Emhoff, earned nearly $1.17 million in 2015 and paid almost $450,000 in state and federal income taxes, according to their 2015 tax returns.
The Sacramento Bee asked Harris and her opponent, Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez of Orange County, to provide copies of their 2015 returns as part of a longstanding practice of reviewing candidates’ financial records in major statewide races. Sanchez’s campaign has declined.

I haven’t even started our taxes yet because I know we are going to owe a lot, maybe thousands.
But I really can’t be bothered with that right now because I’m so worried about my little dog. I can not fathom HOW she is still alive when she hasn’t had any real measurable amount of food in more than a week. And gaining weight!Today’s progress report from the animal hospital is there has been no vomiting since one time on Tuesday night, but she’s still in IV fluids. Today she is much stronger, very alert, and visiting all over the hospital. They are going to try to introduce food/water by mouth to her tomorrow. Food was a no-go for her today, but maybe tomorrow.
Oh, and it appears that she has some early stage Sundowners/dementia. But then she is 17 years old and that’s pretty elderly even for a Jack Russell Terror.
Oh, sorry to hear about your doggie, hope he hangs in there and gives you much more time.
re: #216 Michele: Out of the closet and into the fire
Warren has put 10 years worth of tax returns online
Elizabeth Warren Says All 2020 Presidential Candidates Should Release Tax Returns
“I put the past 10 years of my federal tax returns online,” Warren wrote. “And now I’m calling on every other candidate for President to do exactly the same thing. Add your name to our petition calling on all 2020 presidential candidates to put their taxes online.”
Warren gets a plus one for me for that. I like Warren. I just like her more as a Senator than possible President but I like her.
re: #187 KGxvi
She released her 2015 returns when she ran for the Senate in 2016. So she at least has a history of doing so.
Dammit! I shoulda knowed! You beat me to it.
re: #210 lawhawk
I am getting a good chunk of $ back, only because of the federal EV tax credit of $7500 when I bought the Tesla, which I had to sell a bunch of stocks for (which counts as income). Next year will most likely be a different story.
re: #215 Sir John Barron
Of course if I had given as much to charity in 2017 as I did in 2018 I would have done much better last year as well.
But I was expecting a much smaller return this year so I was pleasantly surprised. Put it to good use.

Agree to disagree but I do agree his “Hadn’t thought about it” was a poor response. It’s fair criticism btw.

Yep. The motherfucker said that after one of the “fine people” on the one side killed another. And then this asshole has the nerve to call my party Antisemitic and thinks he can hide behind his sleazy son in law and daughter being Jewish to dodge the truth that he’s an Antisemitic pig.
Well it’s turned rather balmy here in the Mid-Atlantic region today. Working from home and got the sliding glass door open.

I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that Daisy and I are going through the long goodbye. Something happened last week late Thursday afternoon where she suddenly started panting and shaking heavily.
We had a winter storm just started to move in and folks were told to stay off the roads.
Daisy’s panting and shaking lasted until 4 am Friday then stopped as suddenly as it started.
Then, later on Friday, the vomiting began.
And it never stopped. Until now that she’s at the animal hospital so they can see first hand what we’ve been dealing with.
If this doesn’t work then I’m sadly ready to let her go. Other options are exploratory surgery or sending her to a vet specialist in Lexington for an endoscopy and other invasive tests.
She is ~17 years old. I got her 15-16 years ago as a rescue when the local humane society called one day asking if I could take in a beagle mix to foster and prep for adoption. They showed up 30 minutes later and I said “that is NOT a beagle”. Good grief, the wee dog had springs for legs!
She has lived here with us in TheBackwoods ever since.

I just don’t see any reason, at her age, to put her through the torture of the other options, even though I can afford it.
I know that I am so very fortunate that cost is not in any way a deciding factor (been there, done that earlier in life). I just want a good quality of life and dignified/unpainful walk to the Rainbow Bridge for her.

OT but I’ve been watching a lot of interesting TV set in one of my favorite time periods to read and learn about. WWI and its aftermath. We often hear about the Greatest Generation and their heroics in the Depression and WWII but I feel so little about their parents, the men and women who shaped them. I just got done watching Rebellion, an Irish series about the Irish Easter Rising and later Irish War of Independence and right now I’m watching Road to Cavalry, a Russian miniseries based off a novel about two sisters caught up in the Russian drama from 1914-the victory of the Reds in the USSR. I’m thinking a lot about my grandparents’ parents. 8 men and women I never got ot know.

Google announces an employee has calculated Pi out to 31,415,926,535,897 decimal places. Happy Pi day!
I figured this out once just for the hell of it. If you could somehow measure the diameter of the observable universe at any given moment to the nearest Planck Length, and wanted to calculate its circumference, again to the nearest Planck Length, you’d only have to know π to 61 decimal places.

I really don’t know what it is about wingnuts and food/dietary issues: the whitey-righties are usually the first ones to scoff at the perceived bad eating habits of “the poor” - i.e. nonwhite poors - yet will bristle violently at any suggestion that they ought to curtail their own over-consumption of fatty-salty-sugary-preservative-laden fast food/junk food: usually in the name of “freedom”.

Hot Asian Ex-Wife is the logically, grammatically, and semantically correct formulation as “ex” modifies her former marital status as Rage Furby’s “wife.” Presumably, she remains “hot” and Asian, so “ex” cannot modify those attributes.

Because they think big mean Michelle Obama was “telling” them how to eat instead of actually saying what she was “For fuck sake, healthy eating is a good thing.” Even Mike Huckabee briefly thought that was nonsense until he saw it was more to his benefit to act like she was “tyrannizing” them by encouraging healthy eating.

Daisy didn’t have any foaming at the mouth, just vomiting thick clear mucus with some white foam on top.
Try the NutriCal. Honest. It’s miraculous stuff.
And if she’ll eat anything, salmon. My farm girl friend swears by it. SWEARS by it.

I’m sorry…I just had to.
Nah you’re good. I misread about Morris Dees too. I’m off today.

Right now, no… but when the polar ice caps are permanently melted?

I poured a splash of chicken broth into the water bowl Tuesday morning. She didn’t want any part of that until I poured in a splash of water.
She lapped up some of it and threw up.
Thus the trip for the extended stay at the animal hospital.

Are we sure that was a spider in that clip? It looked like was flying down, and folded wings before crawling into the bodywork. And I don’t think there are any spiders with wings (though if there were, I’n sure they’d be found n Australia).
I’ve been waiting for someone else to confirm what I saw!

Totally a crab spider. It wasn’t flying, it was climbing a silk thread.

Got a high wind warning until 8 pm issued.
The gusts are shaking the house.
That’s been going here all day, and I think it is worse now. I’ve had to dead bolt all the doors. When I had to leave the house, it was all I could do to stand up. It blew the pilot light out on my water heater. I’m waiting for tomorrow and no wind to try to re-light it. Thank heavens the trees haven’t let go, here in the yard. There were trees down everywhere I went this afternoon.

It’s gotten very scary quiet here…but not for long, I suspect.

No, the rule is half your age plus 7 years. That’s the line for creepy.
Hey, we’ve been through this before here. My husband was 20 years older than I am, and it was our business!
ggggrrrrrrrrr

I swear by Nutri Cal, too. Take just a dab on your finger and spread it on the roof of her mouth. Start slow…
It saved a lot of critters here, where lots of critters got dumped!
