The poll really spells out the contradictory world that US politics has to work in: Americans want free/cheap healthcare, but they don’t want to have to give up the security blanket of a health insurance policy. The problem is that the things they want to be guaranteed by law if not as a right…would put most insurance companies out of business.

One of the guys I miss from the bad old days when RWNJ’s populated this board was (correct me if I don’t have the Nic exactly right) Ed Mahmoud’s Sock Puppet. I don’t know if he was a trained meteorologist, but he was always spot-on as far as interpreting the level of threat of storms in Texas. I also believe that of the 254 counties in Texas, he had gotten drunk in at least 200.
Good for him.
So, we have two kinds of spring storms, and the one we we have tonight is sweeping in from the west generated by a low pressure system that is sweeping east, fast, from a low pressure system centered around Dallas.
Dave In Austin is going to get hammered tonight.
Here, in town, the 700’ drop from the Hill Country to our west tends to break up storm cells, and cause them to re-form to the east. We are often in a rain shadow from fast moving E -> W moving squall lines.
The real danger here in Flash Flood Alley is strong low pressure systems up in Oklahoma that drag instability down our way that result in thunderstorms training over the same patch of land. That’s what happened two Saturdays ago when I got just under 5” in my backyard.

And the squall line is losing intensity coming off the Balcones Fault. We were warned about two-inch hail, but all we are getting is heavy, but not inundating rain here in town.
The latest radar images show the the color shift as the squall line moves east off of the high ground. Typical, and fortunate for Austin:
You’ll notice that it is regenerating just east of the city. This is typical. The counties east of us will get much more severe weather than we will in town from a storm system like this.

My wife’s favourite aunt’s funeral was yesterday. She lived to be ninety-nine. She was born in November of 1919.
Her youngest brother just told her about it via E-mail. The overwhelming majority of her family disowned her many years ago because she is an atheist.
We went to one of her brother’s funeral many years ago, where my wife got the ubiquitous question from her preacher brother “what church do you go to” and my wife answered him honestly.
The funeral turned into a very ugly scene for us, and we left prior to the start of the service. (That was my only introduction to her family other than her younger brother.)

Because the Barr letter and the subsequent attempts at a media blitz did nothing to move the needle. The majority of voters still think that Donny is a rotten crook and today’s release of the “lightly redacted” report probably won’t do much to change that. If anything, new revelations from the report will only push the polls further against him. The public was promised “total exoneration” by Donny, but Barr has failed to deliver on that and the report’s release is only going to further muddy the waters.
China’s growing demographic problem will become an economic one.
China’s main state pension fund will run out of money by 2035 due to a decline in the available work force, according to new research.
The urban worker pension fund, the backbone of the country’s state pension system, held a reserve of 4.8 trillion yuan (US$714 billion) at the end of 2018. It is predicted to peak at 7 trillion yuan in 2027, then drop steadily to zero by 2035, a report by the World Social Security Centre at the government-supported Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has said.
And the gap between contributions and outlays could be as high as 11 trillion yuan (US$1.64 trillion) by 2050, with each retired citizen supported by only one worker, down from the current level of two, the government think tank calculated.
The report confirms long-standing concerns among the general public, especially among younger people, that China’s state pension system is financially unsustainable and highlights a major challenge for the government after four decades of restrictions on births.
The loosening of the one-child rule a few years ago came a little too late.
Pensioners would have to rely even more on their families for support, thereby putting tweeners (couples with kids and parents to care for) is even more financial stress. That would make it harder for such families to be consumers and investors, both of which China needs to keep its economy humming along.
A sensible policy would be to use the nation’s vast wealth to expand the pension system, even to expand it to cover all senior citizens not already receiving a pension. Whether the Politburo is that far-sighted is a big question. Universal retirement pensions are not as sexy as high-speed rail lines or international transport expansion.
So, for those taking notes at home, the AG announced last night that he and the Deputy AG will be holding a Comey-style press conference about the Mueller Report hours before said report will be released to Congress and the public. Atop that news was revelations that WH lawyers have been in discussions with the AG for weeks about the Report’s release and the subject of said Report spilled the beans about the AG’s presser on live radio hours before the DOJ announced it. And the subject of that Report has also been slagging it, the DOJ, and everyone involved in its genesis for days despite his continued insistence that it totally exonerates him.
Take all this in mind when the press begins breathlessly reciting the very things they said upon the submission of the Report to the AG a month ago, about how the whole thing flipped the narrative in the WH’s favor and the DNC looked ridiculous for not letting it drop.

There is some evidence emerging that suggests many Daeshbag controlled areas were at times run like protection rackets.

Iowa Republicans are attempting to pass a law to push out the Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court on a specific date in 2021.
The Chief Justice was the person who wrote the unanimous decision for marriage equality in 2009.
The bill would also eliminate the merit-based system of appointment of state supreme court justices (a non-partisan commission submits a list to the governor) with a system to allow the party in power to appoint justices without such input.
Christians already turfed out three of the justices from that decision.

Any US-UK trade agreement would be subject to the same requirements to ratify any treaty: 2/3 vote. Even given their “win” last November, the Senate GOP don’t possess the votes needed to reach 2/3 without DNC votes. It’s the same reason why NAFTA 1.2 is still languishing in the Senate, because Mitch hasn’t been able to even line up the GOP votes he needs, let alone get the Blue Dogs to vote “aye.”

First there was Bendgate. Now there is … Foldgate?
Several reporters with early access to Samsung’s Galaxy Fold — a luxury foldable smartphone that turns into a tablet — say their new devices broke after just a few days of use.
Reviewer Mark Gurman from Bloomberg said his “review unit is completely broken and unusable after just two days in.” In a series of tweets, he documented how his screen broke after he removed the protective film on the screen. Meanwhile, The Verge’s Dieter Bohn called out a “small bulge” on what he said was a defective hinge.
Other reviewers have indicated a constant flickering screen.
edition.cnn.com [note: Autoplay vid embedded at link]
Granted, that protective film shouldn’t have been removed - it’s actually noted in the instructions. That being said, this is a first-gen product and bugs and defects are to be expected. I certainly hope that people considering blowing two grand on this baby maybe hold off a bit until Samsung gets the concept perfected. It’s a cool idea nonetheless.

Good point, especially about objective morality. The ancient Spartans thought it was a perfectly wonderful and commendable thing to be humping little boys; it goes without saying that such a worldview would be seen as abhorrent by most people today. That’s a great example of how morality changes over the course of time. Slavery is another example of that.
Morals change - what is acceptable, indeed laudable, in one place and time can be viewed by later generations as repugnant and monstrous.
re: #69 Dr Lizardo
Even that which is argued in Christianity as “the” objective morality (the Ten Commandments) is not objective.
“Thou shalt not kill” is sometimes translated as “thou shalt not murder.” The first (kill) is absolute, the second is defined in law.
My example of objective morals deals with “thou shalt not steal.” That’s a pretty clear statement: Theft is always wrong. It is morally repugnant.
If you are a police officer who is under cover, embedded with a group thought to be extremists, and you encounter during your surveillance the plans to blow up an elementary school, is it wrong to steal those plans and turn them over to your superiors to foil the plot?
Thou shalt not steal is a moral absolute. It does not make a distinction. Theft is wrong.
The fact that someone can rationalise that theft of plans as “for the greater good” (which ain’t in the Ten Commandments) shows that even in that cornerstone of belief, there is no objective morality when the rubber hits the road.

The countries with higher percentages of religious people aren’t free of crime including rape and murder. The countries which are less religious tend to be wealthier and safer. Just saying.
So, a bit of good news…..well, with any luck.
An alliance of pro-EU conservative, socialist and liberal parties would win an absolute majority in next month’s European Parliament election, though eurosceptic groups will gain ground, a survey showed on Thursday.
With Britain expected to participate after its departure from the European Union was delayed, the proportion of the assembly’s seats held by eurosceptics is seen rising to 14.3 percent from around 10 percent currently, according to the compilation of national polls commissioned by the European Parliament.
The figure was 13.0 percent in the previous survey in March, which did not include British voters.
Currently, a coalition of centre-right and centre-left groupings holds a majority.
Of course, time will tell, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope that this prognostication turns out to be correct.

It’s not just right-wing nuts either.
It kind of fits in with arguments of “if there’s no God, how can there be objective morality? Why wouldn’t people just go round raping and killing?”
a) There isn’t any objective morality.
b) Laws
c) If you need religion to keep from raping and killing, by all means I don’t want you to give up religion.
People will be rapey-killy-stealy-gambly all the time unless they all fear eternal retribution and flaming damnation
That is their view of human nature, or rather, their own self-loathing projected onto the rest of society.

‘Not my Jesus’: Christian students protest Pence, alarming conservatives (Goes to the Washington Post)
Taylor University, a Christian evangelical college in Indiana, has invited Vice-President Pence to speak at it’s commencement ceremony.
There is massive pushback against the university from students and alumni. A Change dot org petition has drawn over five thousand signatures.
“Inviting Vice President Pence to Taylor University and giving him a coveted platform for his political views makes our alumni, faculty, staff and current students complicit in the Trump-Pence Administration’s policies, which we believe are not consistent with the Christian ethic of love we hold dear,” wrote the petition’s author, Alex Hoekstra, who graduated from Taylor in 2007 and has since then held roles with the Democratic Party, including in Oregon and at the national level.

It would be satisfying to see Christian religious groups leading the counter-charge against the travesty that Pence and Trump have made of their religion

Glad to see push back within the Evangelical community on Trump-Pence. Pence is an as big hateful asshole as Trump.

What is a good Christian like Mike Pence going to do when he can’t even get any love from other Christians?
One thing for sure, he will not change. That fool is so damn drunk on his own brand of “Christianity” he can’t be touched by any angels.

Honestly, if the first question to Barr from reporters is not “Why should we believe anything you have to say?,” I’m probably going to turn off the TV. There is absolutely no reason to take seriously this whole charade if the press is going to act as though Barr has any credibility by this point.
“I can’t wait for the country to see the full Mueller report today so everyone will understand that I am innocent.” — things Trump isn’t tweeting
— Kaili Joy Gray (@KailiJoy) April 18, 2019
Telling you. There’s something in the report that Mueller concluded that he doesn’t like. My bet is that it’s only the precedent against criminally prosecuting a sitting President that saved him and Mueller thinks he did obstruct justice.

From DOJ spox Kerri Kupec: In his remarks at 9:30am, AG Barr will address executive privilege (whether it was invoked), White House + DOJ interactions over the last several weeks, and the redaction process.

The likenesses of music legend Johnny Cash and civil rights icon Daisy Lee Gatson Bates will appear in the hallways of the U.S. Capitol in marble form, replacing two figures from the Civil War.
…
Cash, the esteemed country music artist with crossover appeal, hailed from Arkansas. Some state lawmakers were opposed to using Cash to represent the state in Washington because of his troubled past, according to the Arkansas Times.“Mr. Cash is a great musician . . . but the drugs, the alcohol, the women, that kind of thing . . . no, I can’t hold him up to my children as a model,” state Rep. Doug House (R) said.
I wonder who House voted for (no, actually I don’t).
I hadn’t realized they were going to the US capitol.

So, greets and saluts on the Happy Barr Report drop day.
Oh you mean you thought you were seeing the Mueller Report today? Sorry, but that’s not what you’re going to see or hear. You’re going to see the report through the prism of Trump toady Barr. Barr’s going to spin furiously to give Trump breathing room, even though Barr’s already let slip that Trump is in trouble on obstruction (that from the original letter he released).
No one should trust for a moment that Trump is exonerated in any way, shape, or form here.
What we’ll likely find out is that Mueller couldn’t make a case on conspiracy against the US because of the obstruction of justice by Trumpworld and the nonstop lies coming from Trump so he couldn’t get to the bottom of what exactly occurred. Trump refused to testify, which added to the uncertainty.
But it’s going to be clear that Trump should be impeached on obstruction at a minimum.
How do we know that? Because Trump himself is tweeting nonstop about how this report is harassing him all while claiming he’s been exonerated. You can’t claim the report exonerates you when it’s harassing you. That’s not how any of this works.
And until we all read the report, all you’re going to see from the media and WH is spin and supposition.
Oh yeah, and what I’m writing here is supposition based on what we already know and what Trump’s already publicly stated and what Barr has publicly stated.
The report - Barr’s sanitized version or the unredacted Mueller report - wont be nearly as kind to anyone in Trumpworld.
re: #131 lawhawk
Gotti was surrounded by more competent people than Trump.
True. I’m just saying that Trump acts like Gotti. No one would mistake his legal team for Gotti’s. Bruce Cutler wasn’t an idiot like Rudy showed himself to be as a defense attorney.
Hilarious watching you defend the indefensible Trump who claims the report exonerates him in one tweet and claims it’s a witch hunt in the next.

I see the Trump Derangement Syndrome flung around quite a bit from people who had serious ODS. The question I have is why shouldn’t we hate Trump? There’s nothing admirable about him as a man let alone as President. I’m not going to respect him just because enough people were stupid enough to think he should be President. It’s not like he respected the Presidency ever.
I’m more interested in hearing Robert Mueller tell it all himself. https://t.co/qPwvfP5coW

I know the feeling since my family disowned me years ago because my then girl friend was black…
I’m going to watch it like it’s that scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark where Karen Allen drinks the entire country of Tibet under the table.

Are jobless claims *really* at all-time lows? @CapEconUS finds that state restrictions on unemployment insurance enacted since 2008 have made it harder & less appealing to file for unemployment insurance (NC is the most dramatic case). Otherwise, claims would be ~30,000 higher. pic.twitter.com/MZbaTZlPoh

Continuing the trend that began under Obama. Yup… Trump inherited a strong economy, and claims it all as his own just as he claims to be self-made, when he inherited his fortune from his dad.

OTOH family-run companies rarely survive past the third generation. Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka might not have much to leave their offspring. Tiffany and Barron would be wise to invest in an indexed mutual fund and just let the dividends accumulate.

Yeah Barr’s cred should be zlitch at this point.
I think it’s insanity to think that the media is going to act any differently than they have in the past. They’ll take the whitewash at face value and immediately spin it as the Democrats on a witch hunt. Nothing has happened since this started to make the media stop and say, “Hey, this administration is totally corrupt and lies 100% of the time and we should report it as much from the get go.”
