Kind funny Charles. You just tweeted about a Chrome bug and here I am reporting a LGF bug. I went to tweet this page and get the error message I can’t tweet nothing, but yet the tweet shows up in my timeline. Weird.

Some financial bloggers — not the pro economists, who are more sanguine — say the next recession will be much worse than the 2008 crash. If the next one starts while Trump is still in office, he will probably do a Hoover and tank the economy even more, leaving it to the next administration to clean up the mess.

So I went out today and protested in front of where A*pologi*a is meeting. And ugh. Ouch.

I have video. Of course I always have video, because I wear a GoPro wrist cam, but it’s for my protection more than anything else. This time, I have video of people, both adults and children, telling me that women who get abortions should be executed. It’s shocking to hear kids and adults say this.

Should I take the time to edit this down and post a few chunks? I’m not worried about the parents of the kids complaining, because I had these same kids tell me a few weeks back when THEY were videoing ME that I was on public property and they could record me. But it’s just the shock of it…does it have any value?

It is unlikely she’ll change any of the adult’s minds.

The children are fair game. If they bring their children to protests in public, then there is no reason not to counter the arguments. (You don’t have to be mean to the children, just truthful.)

The videos of such things are good for countering those arguments with people who may never have run into this before, to provide context to a third person. Counter-apologetics is for people who have never encountered the arguments before, not for those making them.

Such videos would be good on a platform such as YouTube, where billions of people can see them and see what such people are really arguing for.

My wife just spent three days writing a takedown for a nutbar at the American Diabetes Association who claimed everything from the ketogenic diet is good for treating diabetes to GMOs are inherently bad for diabetes.

The guy went on a monumental Gish Gallop of woo quackery.

She posted her reply here:

community.diabetes.org

Like our esteemed church protestor, such takedowns aren’t meant for the true believer who posts such nonsense.

They are for the third-party who might go into a trusted site like the American Diabetes Association and read their nonsense thinking this is real medicine rather than some GoogleU graduate pushing nonsense (and trying to kill someone).

The only thing the ketogenic diet has ever been shown to be effective for (and its spinoffs like the Atkins Diet) is certain types of epilepsy in children.

It is getting serious study for epilepsy in adults, by real researchers and physicians.

The GMO nonsense is just that.

Proud of my wife tonight for tearing apart a woo medicine promoter.

Bitmain is a Chinese maker of dedicated cryptocurrency mining machines. They’re one of the two leading manufacturers (the other is also Chinese, IIRC). I have online friends in the States who have ordered Bitmain machines, and when UPS delivers it, they ask for the customs duties COD — usually around $200-300. If Trump raises the tariffs to 25%, those duties are going to make it pointless to even buy one of those things. Even with Bitcoin values rising, it’s barely profitable to operate the things now.

Lenovo computers will also cost more. FTM probably most computers will cost more, because so many components are made in China.

Maybe I should give up teaching and pursue smuggling as a sideline.

Atheist vlogger Godless Iowan has ended his channel, as she has come out as transgender.

She now has a channel named Objectively Subjective.

The new channel weighs in on progressive politics and social issues.

Lots of people dis YouTube personalities for not having jobs or whatnot (in the same way people used to do the same with film, radio, television, &c personalities).

At any rate, Godless Iowan puts out in her final video on that channel the declaration she is transgender. That public admission is about as hard as a public admission of atheism (so she has some experience in that).

I love both GOT and “Killing Eve”. Tonight, “Killing Eve” was a better show head to head than GOT. “Killing Eve” had better plotting, dialogue and acting. I was on the edge of my couch watching Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer more than any actor or scene in GOT.

Edit to add: I watched both when they were actually on instead of timeshifting.

Teachers Wanted: S.C. Company Hires Cash-Strapped Educators for Warehouse Jobs
By Sarah Schwartz on May 3, 2019 2:29 PM

Teachers taking on a second job to make ends meet is common: Almost 1 in 5 educators say they work outside of school, doing everything from tutoring to driving for Uber and working at fast food restaurants. But in this South Carolina city, one company has started an unusual program—offering part-time warehouse work for teachers in the area.

Nephron Pharmaceuticals, a drug manufacturing company in West Columbia, S.C., recently hired 650 current and retired teachers through a new program designed to provide educators with additional income.

Next up, landscape and day laborer work at construction sites.

She posted her reply here:

Nice takedown, give the Mrs. a high-five from me :) Refer to me as a Lizardim violently allergic to Woo.

I’m distressed that there are alumni from the Woo U Internet campus in such a place as a Diabetes Association, making recommendations that could be very hazardous.

As to GMO crops, as I understand the most is to ensure consistent quality of product by being resistant to pests and other facts. One of the quality of product facets being its sugar content, allowing for better dietary control for people who need to keep tabs on their nutritional intake. So GMO can be better for Diabetes unless it is a modification to make the produce a sugar hand grenade, of course…

As to fructose vs. sucrose, fructose is taken up faster by the body. I have that morsel of knowledge in my spine since my childhood because one of my classmates way back is a Type I.

Speaking of guys on thrones… Trump continues to act as though he’s guilty. Cohen reports to prison today, and Trump’s tweeting out that Mueller shouldn’t testify. If the report exonerates him as Trump claims, why not have Mueller testify to that fact.

The reality, as we all know, is the report is the opposite of exoneration. It’s a roadmap to impeachment, removal from office, and indictment on federal felonies. Trump knows this, and he’s counting on GOP obstructionism to ride this out.

At the same time, his North Korea gambit is falling apart as he appeals to Jong Un claiming that they have an understanding (they don’t - Jong Un played Trump and Jong Un is getting everything he wants and Trump gets nothing), which means that he’s got to focus on Iran (which doesn’t have nukes because the Obama JCPOA deal that Trump continually attacks is the one thing that got Iran to hold off on their weapons program). Oh, and Hamas and Israel have another flare up, because Jared’s so effective with his peace deals.

Trump got it from FOX, of course.

Scott Walker: Republicans need to wake up to Democrats’ nationwide judicial power grab (goes to FOX News Channel, posted three hours ago)

Former President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder won’t tell the truth when it comes to their redistricting strategy, but here it is: Pick a state, any state, and sue until it’s blue. They have spent years and millions of dollars selling the false narrative that Democrats draw “fair maps” while any and all Republican-drawn maps are “partisan gerrymanders.” While rhetorically cute, their primary goal has nothing to do with fighting gerrymandering as they repeatedly claim, but to put redistricting in the hands of unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats and lifetime-appointed judges.

Their strategy makes sense. There are plenty of unelected federal judges presiding over these redistricting cases who will enthusiastically toss out constitutionally drawn maps to help elect more Democrats. That’s exactly what happened recently in both Michigan and Ohio, despite the entirely dubious and suspect arguments from the left. It will also not be a surprise if liberal federal panels do the same thing in other states in the coming weeks.

Cersei’s opening was very strong. Dany has lost some pieces, entering the middle game. Both sides are considering their next move. Cersei is trying to provoke Dany into doing something stupid, like risking her last most powerful piece in a direct attack on the Queen of King’s Landing. OTOH, Cersei is over-confident, which means she’s bound to go down in some kind of Greek-tragedy way. Her brother Jamie? Arya of the Needle? A dragon falling on top of her?

Cersei is likely to be encircled and facing a siege. That’s a no win situation for her. But every day she’s on the throne is a day Dany isn’t.

Dany’s aching to unleash dragonfire on the folks responsible for her losing another dragon (which was all too easy, and suggests Dany’s tactics are awful and that the way to fight the scorpions is to get in underneath their firing angle - or to use weather to their advantage, which seems to be foreshadowed in a battle against Greyjoy’s fleet.

Her aerial combat tactics need a *lot* of work. FTM her naval tactics do, too.

Well, it’s not like she’s got that long left to learn… and her fleet tactics are largely at the whims of Euron’s tactics as a pirate. Always seems to catch their targets off kilter. Did Dany not know that Cersei had scorpions at her disposal? She did - because they fired on her dragons during the Battle of the Goldroad. They even nicked one of her dragons then.

Hubris… it’ll be Dany’s downfall.

Particularly when in polls, the majority of Republican voters wish to see the unredacted report released as well.

That may be because they think it will exonerate the maladministration. That puts them in a bind, because continuing to withhold it sure makes it look like they have something to hide. Conservative voters can see that too.

The church formerly known as Mormon has dropped a requirement that couples who have a civil marriage must wait a year before a temple sealing. The prior rule was applied unequally as some countries require a civil marriage. This primarily affected US couples.

A friend of mine got married to her husband civilly here in the USA because Mexico doesn’t recognize temple marriages. She had a hassle with her church leaders trying to explain why this had to happen. This was pretty touch and go. Her in laws could not get visas to come to the USA for a marriage. This was over 30 years ago.

Exodus 21:22 et seq — if you assault a pregnant woman in such a way as to cause a miscarriage, but the woman is otherwise unharmed… that’s a misdemeanor. Financial compensation is required. But it’s definitely not murder, and the penalty for killing that fetus is far, far less than the penalty for killing a human being.

Numbers 5:11 et seq — if the husband of a pregnant woman believes he’s not the father, religious law requires she drink a potion and undergo a ritual that’s supposed to reveal God’s verdict on the accusation. If it turns out she really did cheat and get pregnant by someone other than her husband, the pregnancy MUST be terminated. She cannot be allowed to take it to term.

Back in the days before modern medicine, before c-sections were a survivable thing… if a delivery was going very badly and it seemed unlikely to end up with a live mother and live child and a decision had to be made — a Jewish midwife or doctor would cut that half-born child into pieces if that’s what it took to get it out of her. If a choice had to be made between the woman and the child, if there didn’t seem to be a way to save both, then keeping the woman alive was absolutely the higher priority. Every time.

Thanks. Not being Jewish, I wasn’t aware of the cultural and historical contexts. He seems to be against abortion in all circumstances and he has a right to that opinion but as you point out, it’s at odds with Judaism’s scripture and history. So it seems to me that he twists just as much as the more liberal Jews he decries.

I’m worried about that too. Trumpers aren’t going to take defeat well. And Republican elected officials will feed that resentment just like they did with Obama’s election.

There has always been blood. My fear is that they will try and use the violence as an excuse to not go after the guilty.

Can’t see Roberts doing that but Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, & Kavanaugh. Yes.

I say all House committees should look at the parts of government where they’re charged with oversight, and demand compliance from the White House. Inundate them with demands.

It would highlight not only Trump’s cluelessness on how government is supposed to work, but his own inability to appoint people who do understand and can organize the work that needs to be done.

And the fact that he, and everyone who works for him, are not to be trusted.

Drive those ‘untrustworthy’ numbers up and we’re halfway to impeachment.

It’s no wonder why it’s a struggle to get lgbt rights federally protected when there are people in government who don’t believe racially equality should be protected.

We’re 52 years after Loving and public officials still talk this way. I don’t give a shit what your religious beliefs say. If they’re getting in the way of people’s rights, the right to marry, step aside. I have a lot of strong beliefs too. That’s why I probably wouldn’t make it in some positions that require you to be more impartially minded.

Again

Religious freedom is not: YOU can’t do that , it is against my religion.

My family disowned me because I fell in love with an African American woman. No ruling will stop their racist hate.

When I was a teenager, I wound up quite infatuated with an African American girl. We started “dating”, as kids do, and of course, I brought her around to meet the parents.

My parents came from the WWII generation, and let’s be blunt, interracial relationships were, by and large, frowned upon. That being said, after getting over some initial surprise, they accepted it, somewhat grudgingly. We ended dating for about a year (and oh yeah, I heard all kinds of shit from our 99.9% white classmates) and then she moved away and that was that.

After I got divorced from my Czech ex-wife, my dad told me, “Ah, you shouldn’t have married your ex; she was stuck-up. You shoulda married that black girl you were dating when you were a kid - she had a good head on her shoulder and she was damned smart, too.”

Heh. That came as something of a surprise to me.

Dad’s parents are your common Northside Pittsburgh pairing. German and Irish. The German grandparents themselves were Catholic and Lutheran which I imagine was a big deal when they married in 1903.
