They were all traffic stops. One for my light that lights up my rear license plate was out, one (one New Year’s Eve!) for not scraping my windows of frost adequately, and one for speeding. Two out of those three police encounters of mine involved women officers. And they were super cool.

Family can be a blessing, if you’re exceptionally lucky.
We brought my mom home on hospice Saturday morning. She was in the hospital from April 22nd (my sister’s birthday) to May 4th (my nephew’s birthday). We’re in the held-breath stage of waiting to see if she will rally for a few days or even weeks, if I’m lucky; or if she’s ready to let go and ebb out, after 94 years.
But she’s home. Mostly sleeping, but she knows where she is. She knows she’s had the five kids she raised and the one she adopted later around her. She’s had seven of her twelve grandkids visit; another is coming soon; and one great-granddaughter is here. My brother came in for a week; my sisters have been here since April 25th & 26th — one just had to leave, two will be staying till Friday. All of her kids were together to make the big decisions about her care, about when to get her home. As much as we disagree on politics and some major issues, we can pull together for a crisis. And enjoy each other’s company. That seems to be incredibly rare; she counts that as her major accomplishment in a crowded, sometimes chaotic, often painful life — she prides herself that her kids like each other.
No idea how my husband and I are going to manage if she rallies slowly and needs more help than I can give her when everyone HAS to go home, but the hospice folks are wonderful, and I’ll burn that bridge if I come to it. For now she’s home, and we can keep her comfortable. That’s the task at hand.

Hospice is one of those greatly underappreciated things, and depending on the organization, they may have the ability to provide assistance at home as well. One that I worked with was able to set up a live-in health care professional who could help with care, medications, etc.

Also, what happened in those seven months between the SNM and the beginning of proceedings? Answer: Grand jury indictments of co-conspirators in the cover-up and the release of the transcripts that allowed people a look at how Nixon acted behind closed doors. Well, we’re not getting any more indictments in the immediate future and Trump has so lowered the bar on his actions that there’s not much that could surprise us. So we’re instead left with this argument that we need to make the case to hold impeachment hearings just to hold hearings to make the case for impeachment.

What do mean “not starting those hearings”?
Mueller is next week. McGahn they’ve subpoenaed, Trump wants to forbid it, but ultimately it’ll be McGahn’s decision. The tax returns question will go to the courts, and that can slow things down, but the law is clear.

Indeed, we’re in a holding pattern right now, counting the days between hearings during which we’ve got a white noise of “Both Sides” reporting. To those of us who watched the hearing as it happened, Barr’s performance was a shambles and the case for obstruction was made stronger. For everybody who gets their daily dose of political commentary in bite-sized chunks at 6pm, Barr had some uncomfortable answers but overall it was the Dems being mean to the Attorney General.
It’s a bit hard to get people to take this shit seriously when there’s long pauses between “bombshells.”

My mom passed away 2 years ago of pneumonia. We all thought she would recover & live to be 100, because she was super tough, like my grandmother. My sister was with her when she passed. She called me at work and I started to sob right there at my workstation.
A co-worker near me came over and hugged me. I had to interrupt my manager at a video conference by passing him a note: MY MOTHER JUST PASSED AWAY. He ended the meeting. Then the team had a moment of silence.
I’m pretty sure Manchin will not vote to end the filibuster if Democrats retake the Senate unless things just go really south over the next year and a half. We’re going to have to have more than a one vote margin in order to do that.

I’m no expert on maritime law, but even a glance at a Wikipedia map of the Northwest Passage shows that the bulk of the route passes between indisputably *Canadian* territory. Now I’m not sure of all the ramifications of exactly where and how the waterways/sealanes run wrt the landmasses, and who has sovereignty/jurisdiction over wherever, but one thing, even to this layman, seems fairly obvious. Dismissing Canadian interests re the Northwest Passage as “illegitimate” is imbecilic. Though about par for the Trump Administration….

While Canada classifies the ‘thru Canada” passage as internal waters, most international maritime nations see it as an “international strait” with the right of “transit passage”. In the international view, Canada retains the right to enact fishing, environmental regulations and lawful fiscal & smuggling control. The way I picture the international view is similar to commercial air transit.
So, “some dispute” would be a reasonable view, but “illegitimate” is woefully ignorant.

As a singer I sing at many funerals & I was recently asked by a funeral director to sing at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a Pauper’s Cemetery down by Harrisburg. As I was not familiar with the area, I got lost. Everyone that knows me knows I can be directionally challenged AND my navigation lost its signal.

Anyway, I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt bad and apologized to the guys for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to sing. The workers put down their lunch and began to gather around. I sang my heart and soul out for this man with no family and friends.
As I sang “Amazing Grace”, the spirit began to move and the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I prayed a benediction and started for my car, my head hung low but my heart so FULL.
As I opened the door to my car, I overheard one of the workers say, “I’ve never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”

Yeah, reading up on the NWP, I can see that it’s not as clear-cut an issue as it might seem. But of course, this being the Trump Admin, what we get in the way of public statement is (as usual) “woefully ignorant” - seasoned with hackneyed belligerence about China (generally untrue) and Russia (true but legitimate interest).
In a saner world, maritime interests in the sub-Arctic would be worked out by an international agreement - but since there’s some small possibility that such an agreement might in some way constrain US bullying “sovereignty”, it probably won’t happen.

More and more voices are coming out demanding action, such as all the former prosecutors signing on to the “yeah, Trump should be indicted” side. There will soon be more public hearings with Mueller. More and more of this damning information will become public and unavoidable even to those not paying direct attention. The longer Nancy holds on, the louder the demands.
Announce official impeachment proceedings in the fall when Americans are back into routine. Televise the hell outa the hearings so it is THE topic of conversation. Pound the GOP as enabling/assisting in this massive corruption on the campaign trails and in the debates to assist down-ticket and state races. Force GOP leaders and candidates to continue to try to defend the indefensible, looking more and more corrupt and ridiculous. Back McConnell into a tight fucking corner and make GOP Senators running for re-election sweat blood.
That’s the way I’d do it anyway.

My mom passed away 2 years ago of pneumonia. We all thought she would recover & live to be 100, because she was super tough, like my grandmother. My sister was with her when she passed. She called me at work and I started to sob right there at my workstation.
A co-worker near me came over and hugged me. I had to interrupt my manager at a video conference by passing him a note: MY MOTHER JUST PASSED AWAY. He ended the meeting. Then the team had a moment of silence.

I’m going to try to bring the political discussion here back into the current century if you don’t mind.
Why the Mueller testimony is not a sure thing.
Trump himself could not stop Mueller from testifying, but he could try to convince his attorney general not to allow his testimony. If the Justice Department were to change course and oppose Mueller appearing before Congress, lawmakers would have several possible options to try to bring him in anyway.
The first would be to wait until Mueller is a private citizen, although the special counsel’s office has given no indication when Mueller will leave the department.
The second would be to subpoena for his testimony.In addition, the White House has another tool to try to limit Mueller’s testimony: claim executive privilege over certain elements of the report.
The White House waived executive privilege for the special counsel investigation and didn’t try to block anything in the release of the report — but the White House argues it has not waived executive privilege for Congress, and still reserves the right to invoke it with the legislative branch.

Thomas (he spelled his name “Meekes” in early records) came to New Haven, Connecticut sometime before 1647 when he is first mentioned in town records. Thomas and Rebecca married when she became pregnant and were called before the court July 3, 1649 “to answer to their sinful miscarriage in matter of fornication, with sundry lies added thereto by them both in a gross and heinous matter.” Thomas was ordered severely whipped and fined 5 pounds, and Rebecca was fined 10 pounds.

Watching the first episode of the Chernobyl Miniseries. So far so good.
