GOP & Trump: “Sure, we think Mueller should testify. We believe he can offer more to understanding this report that totally exonerates the White House.”

Mueller: “Alright, I think Barr totally spun my report’s findings and…”

G&T: “WE DON’T NEED TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM MUELLER! IT’S ALL OVER, TRUMP WAS EXONERATED, WE NEED TO MOVE ON!”

Left behind (like the movie) on the last thread:

Oh, boy, creationists are mad at Pat Robertson for throwing creationism under a bus.

Wow, when you’ve lost Pat Robertson … saying he’s an atheist and adopting “man’s pagan religion.”

Ken Ham does not understand “atheism,” “pagan,” or “religion.”

“You know, this universe that we live in is about 14 billion years old and there’s no question about it,” Robertson claimed. “And we have tremendous geological records and all the rest of it. And that 6,000-year stuff just doesn’t compute. But we, as Christians, we need to know the truth.”

In describing the vastness of the universe, which He attributed to the hand of God, he then told viewers with a chuckle, “Let’s give God the credit for what He did and not try to limit Him to 6,000 years.”

Good Lord. Pat Robertson sounding almost rational??? We are totally through the looking glass here.

If I was going to believe in God, I would believe in the one who started things off 15B years ago with the snap of His fingers way more than one who created everything fully formed recently. The first one is actually way more powerful.

In 2005, Judge Kavanaugh had a net worth of $91K, with $10K in the bank and $25K in credit card debt:

In Feb. 2006, property records show he took out a $980K mortgage to finance the purchase of a $1,225,000 home — indicating a down payment of $245,000.

Is anyone investigating how Kavanaugh suddenly acquired his wealth? Or was the original report about his finances inaccurate?

I got a written warning, but mostly because I have the Gold Star Family plates on my car, veteran on my license, and I don’t think he really wanted to embarrass himself writing a speeding ticket for a Smart.

There was some questions raised about it before his nomination hearings, but nothing substantive came of it. Now that the Dems are in control, we can expect more serious actions to find out how Kavanaugh managed to become so flush with money so quickly.

Worst song ever?
From the 1962 version of Lolita:

In his biography of The Ventures, Del Halterman quotes an unnamed reviewer of the CD re-release of the original Lolita soundtrack as saying “The highlight is the most frivolous track, ‘Lolita Ya Ya’, a maddeningly vapid and catchy instrumental with nonsense vocals that comes across as a simultaneously vicious and good-humored parody of the kitschiest elements of early-sixties rock and roll.”

Juliette Kayyem at WaPo: Anti-vaxxers are dangerous. Make them face isolation, fines, arrests.

I love my children. And, if I’m in a gracious mood, I believe that parents who do not vaccinate their children love theirs as much as I love mine.

But, I am quite confident in this fact: I love their children much more than they love mine. These anti-vaxxer parents — call them free-riders or even pro-plague — are putting my children and our communities at risk to cater to their erroneous belief that vaccinations would harm their children rather than contribute to the elimination of childhood diseases.

It is time we stop viewing the anti-vax movement and its adherents’ responsibility for the measles outbreak as a public health problem. With more than 700 reported cases confirmed in 22 states, it is now a public safety crisis, and the tools of public safety — arrests, fines, isolation — are absolutely necessary.

Driving by again, though I’m not lurking from the hospital wi-fi now so am more likely to log in when I get a few minutes.

Pneumonia sucks.
Old age has no dignity.
Family can be a blessing, if you’re exceptionally lucky.

We brought my mom home on hospice Saturday morning. She was in the hospital from April 22nd (my sister’s birthday) to May 4th (my nephew’s birthday). We’re in the held-breath stage of waiting to see if she will rally for a few days or even weeks, if I’m lucky; or if she’s ready to let go and ebb out, after 94 years.

But she’s home. Mostly sleeping, but she knows where she is. She knows she’s had the five kids she raised and the one she adopted later around her. She’s had seven of her twelve grandkids visit; another is coming soon; and one great-granddaughter is here. My brother came in for a week; my sisters have been here since April 25th & 26th — one just had to leave, two will be staying till Friday. All of her kids were together to make the big decisions about her care, about when to get her home. As much as we disagree on politics and some major issues, we can pull together for a crisis. And enjoy each other’s company. That seems to be incredibly rare; she counts that as her major accomplishment in a crowded, sometimes chaotic, often painful life — she prides herself that her kids like each other.

No idea how my husband and I are going to manage if she rallies slowly and needs more help than I can give her when everyone HAS to go home, but the hospice folks are wonderful, and I’ll burn that bridge if I come to it. For now she’s home, and we can keep her comfortable. That’s the task at hand.

yours from a new battlefront,
tired toad

So the woman who posted a massive anti-muslim meme gets to keep her job as a county legislature. The Democrats framed it as racism and xenophobia, making valid points about freedom of religion and that, upon entering politics, they speech is scrutinized and they have to give up some rights of speech in lieu of the job.
The Republicans framed it as the Democrats are anti free speech and said it was not xenophobic, and that Democrats should be ashamed about their actions.

She used a public platform and her personal page to post an anti-islamic post, showing her xenophobic feelings towards rep. Omar especially and the Muslim religion, and yet has spun it that she is the victim now.

Doing my best. There’s a fridge full of food, and they’re fending for themselves so far. And I’ve only apologized for the state of the house a couple of times!

The living room looks like a toy store explosion — 4 1/2 year old great-niece Eden is having a grand time with my dolls and miniatures, a toy train, and the dollhouse my husband got me for my 63rd birthday this year. She’s the sunshine in these clouds — just wish Great-Grandma was well enough to watch her play. Mom kept saying she wanted to see Eden’s face when she laid eyes on that dollhouse.

Waiting for the next shift to show up in an hour or so. I’ll go crash then.

Here’s the thing: It’s not a singular vote that just happens and she needs to spend time building up support for. It is a vote that takes place after weeks or longer of hearings devoted to establishing the basis for each article of impeachment. That she won’t take the step of starting those hearings, instead settling for remarks like how Trump is “not worth it,” may be politically safe but it’s also giving the impression that the DNC is afraid of him.

“Methodical” means slow, it means safe, it means getting lost in the noise that the White House pumps out on a daily basis. And it means working on the White House’s schedule, as every court challenge and every foot-dragging measure eats up time between now and next November. The DNC just won big last November on the promise to hold him accountable, not spend 2 years making the case for why voters should be the ones to pull the trigger.

Belafon  May 7, 2019 • 6:14:33am

Imagine:

“The day after the White House released a stern statement announcing the immediate deployments of an aircraft carrier strike group and bomber wing to the Persian Gulf to deter an unnamed Iranian threat, Navy chief Adm. John Richardson was put in what has become a familiar position for the Pentagon brass: explaining a surprise White House statement on a controversial topic.

In response to National Security Advisor Advisor John Bolton’s Sunday evening statement that the forces were being dispatched to the Gulf in response to “a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings,” by Iran, Richardson said Monday that, essentially, the deployment was just business as usual.

“The Abraham Lincoln Strike Group was planned to deploy for some time now,” Richardson told the SeaAirSpace conference. He touted the Lincoln’s new route to the Gulf as an example of “dynamic force employment,” a new Navy tactic that is meant to surprise potential adversaries by having US ships show up off their coastlines without warning.

He didn’t explain how a White House press release is an example of tactical surprise.”

they won on holding him accountable AND on putting forth legislation to address many concerns (which they have done and has languished in the Senate (as expected) and in the world of the media never gets mentioned again.

She’s fighting to do this right and while I want instant gratification, they’re following the rule of law when it comes to these things. Listen, I know Trump is guilty of multiple crimes, you know the same, but unfortunately there’s still a large segment out there that has been both sides and Faux News spun that believe that this POS is not only not guilty, hes the victim. The slow methodical pace of bringing forth these witnesses and the following of norms to get the information is not just “the way things are done” its also civics 101 in how Government is Supposed to work. Now this may be lost on the press and the knuckle-draggers among us but I believe Nancy is using the government itself against someone who is hell bent to destroy it to show that while the wheels of justice move slowly, they grind just as fine all the same.

Do I wish this was faster, yes, because every day that DJT (and the entire GOP that aided and abetting and condone and attempt to legitimize his actions) is there, more damage is done yet if there’s any basis to restore our government to what once was, it has to be done this way in order to one, restore faith in the system itself and to illustrate the power of law and order (as well as indicate its weaknesses).

Myself, I wish to see how the money and logistical assistance was coordinated with the GOP so we can see an end to certain careers of certain politicos who allowed this travesty to come into being, but I suspect I will have to wait even longer for that to come to light

Meanwhile, in the current day, Trump shitcanned the one firewall (Sessions) to interference in the Mueller investigation five months ago, then appointed his own Bork in the guise of Bill Barr, a man who is actively muddying the water by arguing that Trump’s own attempt at such was simply his raising Mueller’s “conflicts of interest.”

Also, what happened in those seven months between the SNM and the beginning of proceedings? Answer: Grand jury indictments of co-conspirators in the cover-up and the release of the transcripts that allowed people a look at how Nixon acted behind closed doors. Well, we’re not getting any more indictments in the immediate future and Trump has so lowered the bar on his actions that there’s not much that could surprise us. So we’re instead left with this argument that we need to make the case to hold impeachment hearings just to hold hearings to make the case for impeachment.

And the only reason that will happen is if a large enough fraction of the public cares. A large portion of them will never care, because the power is too important. The middle third of the country can be persuaded, but it isn’t going to be easy.

Indeed, we’re in a holding pattern right now, counting the days between hearings during which we’ve got a white noise of “Both Sides” reporting. To those of us who watched the hearing as it happened, Barr’s performance was a shambles and the case for obstruction was made stronger. For everybody who gets their daily dose of political commentary in bite-sized chunks at 6pm, Barr had some uncomfortable answers but overall it was the Dems being mean to the Attorney General.

While Canada classifies the ‘thru Canada” passage as internal waters, most international maritime nations see it as an “international strait” with the right of “transit passage”. In the international view, Canada retains the right to enact fishing, environmental regulations and lawful fiscal & smuggling control. The way I picture the international view is similar to commercial air transit.
So, “some dispute” would be a reasonable view, but “illegitimate” is woefully ignorant.

I assume everyone has heard this old chestnut, but FTR:

As a singer I sing at many funerals & I was recently asked by a funeral director to sing at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a Pauper’s Cemetery down by Harrisburg. As I was not familiar with the area, I got lost. Everyone that knows me knows I can be directionally challenged AND my navigation lost its signal.

I hate AT&T!!

Anyway, I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt bad and apologized to the guys for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to sing. The workers put down their lunch and began to gather around. I sang my heart and soul out for this man with no family and friends.

As I sang “Amazing Grace”, the spirit began to move and the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I prayed a benediction and started for my car, my head hung low but my heart so FULL.

As I opened the door to my car, I overheard one of the workers say, “I’ve never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”

Apparently, I was still lost….

Yeah, reading up on the NWP, I can see that it’s not as clear-cut an issue as it might seem. But of course, this being the Trump Admin, what we get in the way of public statement is (as usual) “woefully ignorant” - seasoned with hackneyed belligerence about China (generally untrue) and Russia (true but legitimate interest).

In a saner world, maritime interests in the sub-Arctic would be worked out by an international agreement - but since there’s some small possibility that such an agreement might in some way constrain US bullying “sovereignty”, it probably won’t happen.

So the right-wing freaks are all moving over to Telegram?

“Can these republicans muster up the courage to say our names?” Loomer wrote to her Telegram followers. Noting that much of the attention in far-right and conservative circles has been devoted to portraying InfoWars reporter Paul Joseph Watson and actor James Woods as victims of alleged social media censorship, she added that conservative politics is a “men’s club.” Loomer even posted an open letter to Donald Trump on Telegram, pleading with him to help get her back on more significant social media platforms.

“My friends were my followers,” she wrote on Telegram. “Men only like me because I’m famous and have followers.”

Yiannopoulos, meanwhile, complained that Breitbart, the right-wing outlet where he once worked, wasn’t working hard enough to get him back on Facebook.

“If Breitbart still had any balls, it would be calling for mass civil disobedience,” he wrote on Telegram.

Telegram limits the audience size to 250,000 and is not visible unless you are part of the group. This cuts off the oxygen to these shitheels.

It would be risky, since the market was only down a bit on Monday, the day after the Deadly Tweet.

And the market hasn’t so far been tanked in the long run — it has fluctuated a lot, but it’s not far off its historic high. Day traders are the only ones seriously affected.

We’re into May, end of the school year, just heading into summer when most Americans are otherwise distracted. Congress is guns blazin’ in some serious investigations and Trump cronies are in stonewalling overdrive. It’s the subject of newscasts, keeping this shit on the front-burner and building. More and more voices are coming out demanding action, such as all the former prosecutors signing on to the “yeah, Trump should be indicted” side. There will soon be more public hearings with Mueller. More and more of this damning information will become public and unavoidable even to those not paying direct attention. The longer Nancy holds on, the louder the demands.

Announce official impeachment proceedings in the fall when Americans are back into routine. Televise the hell outa the hearings so it is THE topic of conversation. Pound the GOP as enabling/assisting in this massive corruption on the campaign trails and in the debates to assist down-ticket and state races. Force GOP leaders and candidates to continue to try to defend the indefensible, looking more and more corrupt and ridiculous. Back McConnell into a tight fucking corner and make GOP Senators running for re-election sweat blood.

That’s the way I’d do it anyway.

Convenient that any televised hearings for the next 90-120 days will be during summer vacation. When I used to watch the soaps, summer was the time for the big Young Love storylines ‘cause the daytime TV audience skewed much younger than the rest of the year.

I’m not sure. TBH the VP has increasingly been an important part of the executive branch which is why I think Biden got Obama praise whereas Palin did not for McCain.

The evolution of the VP has been somewhat fascinating. It really started during the Truman administration when he realized FDR hadn’t kept him in the loop on stuff like WWII. So it’s not so much “wake up and call to check on the president’s health” but how much the president does really depends on the president.

Would have to research. Back when triceratops walked the land, it was a bit of a disgrace not to hold your state, and help in the region.

The last time I can think of a VP pick being that sort of “expand the field” sort of pick was Edwards in 2004. North Carolina hadn’t voted for the Democratic ticket since 1980 (and didn’t in 2004). But otherwise most of the choices that I can think of weren’t the type that would change the map, as it were.

Anchor baby refers to a child purposely born on U.S. soil to anchor the child’s citizenship. There is nothing pejorative or prejudicial about it. It accurately describes a phenomenon. Kamala’s parents didn’t purposefully anchor her here, but the circumstance & result R the same.

‘anchor babies’ are natural born citizens. <<<<<<<<<<<———— that there is a full stop.

Clinton was a Southern Democrat, and the first one nominated since Carter. Like Carter in 1976, he carried a whole lot of the South in both 1992 and 1996. I’m not sure how much of a factor being a Southern Democrat is anymore, but we also haven’t seen one since Gore in 2000 (and I’m not sure how many people really considered him a Southern Democrat). Basically, not sure if it’s a correlation or causation thing.

There’s also a complicating factor of Perot in both 1992 and 1996. We know that nationally Perot’s vote in 1992 was fairly evenly split between Clinton and Bush supporters had he not been in the race. But we don’t know how that would have played out at the state level. Gore in 2000 got something like 47-48% in Tennessee while in a losing effort, which was about what Clinton won Tennessee twice with about the same vote.

I’m going to try to bring the political discussion here back into the current century if you don’t mind.

Why the Mueller testimony is not a sure thing.

Trump himself could not stop Mueller from testifying, but he could try to convince his attorney general not to allow his testimony. If the Justice Department were to change course and oppose Mueller appearing before Congress, lawmakers would have several possible options to try to bring him in anyway.

The first would be to wait until Mueller is a private citizen, although the special counsel’s office has given no indication when Mueller will leave the department.
The second would be to subpoena for his testimony.

In addition, the White House has another tool to try to limit Mueller’s testimony: claim executive privilege over certain elements of the report.

The White House waived executive privilege for the special counsel investigation and didn’t try to block anything in the release of the report — but the White House argues it has not waived executive privilege for Congress, and still reserves the right to invoke it with the legislative branch.

Nevada and New Mexico seem to be fairly solidly blue, and most of southern California is running that way now too. So, I suspect that Arizona will probably flip in the next couple of cycles. As it stands now, there are Democrats holding 5 of 9 House seats in Arizona. But the GOP does have a trifecta at the state level (bonus: Arizona has a non-partisan redistricting committee)

Thomas (he spelled his name “Meekes” in early records) came to New Haven, Connecticut sometime before 1647 when he is first mentioned in town records. Thomas and Rebecca married when she became pregnant and were called before the court July 3, 1649 “to answer to their sinful miscarriage in matter of fornication, with sundry lies added thereto by them both in a gross and heinous matter.” Thomas was ordered severely whipped and fined 5 pounds, and Rebecca was fined 10 pounds.
