And to be honest, I don’t feel sorry for the people he ripped off. You really thought crowdfunding would fund a government project? I mean I hope he does get what he deserves in the end but the marks are such idiots.

Hung out to dry on the previous thread:

re: #330 HappyWarrior

For all his cracks about liberals and safe spaces, he’s the one that lives in one. How else can you be if you assume that someone who thinks it’s barbaric to imprison women over abortion is a “leftist.” I’m really hoping that little show we saw starts cracking the armor at the image he’s made for himself. It showed me what I’ve known about Ben for a long time. There is literally no room for shades of gray in his world. You’re a leftist if oyu don’t share his worldview.

re: #342 Anymouse 🌹

Maybe he can team up with Kevin Williamson and start a nutter shortwave broadcast on the horrors of the liberal agenda.

Well, there’s a good thing about all that.

That’s $22,000,000 that can’t be used for things like funding conservative candidates for office.

That said, I feel sorry for those donors in one specific way.

They’ve been exploited by Movement Conservative to hate anyone who looks different than they do, comes from a different country, speaks a different language, &c.

They’ve been moulded for years into marks.

Even for a very intelligent and well-informed person, a grift can be difficult to see when it’s presented to you. After decades of propaganda, the folks who contributed to this probably never saw it coming.

Maybe this will shake a few of them loose, or perhaps cause them to withdraw entirely from supporting political causes.

As for the person who exploited them, if the evidence supports it, jail. Wire fraud, theft, whatever they can get him for.

Considering people like Kris Kobach signed on to this as “board members,” perhaps it will end their political careers as well.

No. GoFundMe removed the fundraiser and refunded all money donated to it.

What happened after that was the guy set up his own Website and solicited donations through that.

I don’t think they could but the question I have is why did GFM allow this to proceed in the first place. I don’t see how this could fall under a fraud statute but I will admit that I’m probably the least informed of LGF’s Legal people. KG, Lawhawk, and others know much more than I do.

Because she is appealing to them by making plans in their interest. Biden and Pete’s appeals are the same appeals the US media makes - ‘it’s not your fault you’re racist, we have a whole bunch of excuses for you’. Arguably, Bernie’s appeals to them are more in line with what Elizabeth Warren does - actual economic arguments against inequality, and you could say that this is the only real strength of Bernie’s arguments. Unlike him, however, she actually has plans to address racial and gender inequalities, rather than handwaving them away as just the same things that white people are interested in.

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of people repeat the standard Lost Cause claim that the Civil War was really about a tariff rather than about slavery. This was taught as dogma in Texas public schools well into the 80s.
It’s occurred to me that a lot of these people don’t know what a tariff is or how it works. If you ask them for details they never know the name of the specific act, when it was passed, or which provisions were so egregious that they triggered war. Others have the stupid idea that there had never been tariffs in this country until the period right before the war.

She was put in jail when she was arrested working in a poultry plant in 2007, and her child was taken away from her then, and adopted by the Missouri couple. The original judge said you have no options, the MO supremes sent it back, and another judge said the same thing.

Yeah but they’re Catlicks.// I remember reading a profile on Tim Tebow and while I don’t dislike him, I found his father’s arrogance disgusting. See the Tebows were missionaries in the Philippines and the father claimed he was there because “most people there don’t know the name of Jesus Christ.” Most Flippinos are Catholic or Muslim. They definitely know Christ.

The evangelicals I know and grew up around tended to have all of their kids doing the housework, and a lot of times the oldest girl plays mom to the rest of the children. And these were families where all of the children are theirs. No, the stories I have seen, that Happy is talking about, are those where the black children were adopted and really raised to be what the parents thought of as white.

Yeah they totally take away the child’s cultural identity. I read some disturbing accounts about how the Evangelical parents would only let them play with other children of color adopted by fellow Evangelicals and have them play some very racially insensitive games. I hate to cast aspersion on adoptive parents. One of my good friends was adopted and most adopted parents are wonderful but Evangelicals who adopt children from poor countries don’t always have the most altruistic motives and I’m sad to say they use it as a get out of racism accusation card. Should also add that my mom’s cousin adopted and while he’s wrong politically imo he didn’t do it to force the three Russian children to adopt his brand either.

interesting bit of buried news: the reason a second judge looked at this is because the Missouri Supreme Court called the first judge’s ruling a “travesty of justice.” I’ve got this odd feeling that the Supreme Court assumed the second judge was going to do what judges are supposed to do when the Supreme Court tells them to look at a case again: find whatever legal realist bit of flummery one needs to in order to arrive at what the supreme court wants. Now that this hasn’t happened, I suspect the Missouri Supreme Court is going to look at the second decision and open a can of whoop-ass.

It has always been said in my dad’s family that we are Ulster Scots. Forever. Well, my dad got his DNA test done….not exactly.

We’re ~10% Scots-Irish

We’re ~ 72% WELSH. Huh? WTF happened there in the family history? That is NOWHERE.

4% Jewish. I’d heard before that was in my ancestry. There is more from my mother. Diaspora.

The rest is Viking berserkers. Like everyone from that region.

What fascinated me is the Welsh was absolutely nowhere in family history. Turns out my grandmother was Welsh. She never told us. But there are a whole lot of secrets in her family. Her mother died in a mental institution and bipolar is everywhere in their history. My great-grandfather was a Theosophist. Her artist brother had 3 families scattered across the world who did not know about each other. Mental illness + money adds a certain excitement to a family.

Maybe it’s about all 3 of the whites that asked Native Americans where the best place for them to settle would be.

It may be apocryphal, but, one of them might have been John O. Meusebach and a group of German settlers at the Adelsverein land grant near Fredericksburg, Texas in the late 1840’s.

From what I understand, they reportedly asked permission from the local Comanches to settle there. It was granted, and supposedly, that branch of the Comanche Nation generally left them alone after that.

But Texans probably know more about this story, than a Virginian. :)

The Germans are interesting. Carl Schurz, who is also known as the originator of the quote “My country right or wrong, and if wrong to be corrected” was a huge advocate for Native Americans.

I just don’t know why they think this is helpful. You’re not going to get me interested in your faith if you’re damning my friends. You’ll get me interested by having something compelling. I don’t know if there’s a God or not and honestly I don’t judge people if they do. I do not think believing in God makes you a better person but your actions define that. re: #15 Dr Lizardo

That’s a damn good question. Any of LGF’s resident lawyers/legal eagles around to answer that one?

The TOS for GoFundMe basically runs & hides behind the same statutes that govern most internet platforms - that they just exist there to allow people to connect. If enough people clamor about some content, they usually take it down, but there is no affirmative duty.

Caveat lector, basically.

The individual donors could probably sue - anyone can sue anyone at any time, for anything - but they’d have to form a class and show damages. “Relied upon to detriment” is a possible cause of action, but it’d be hard to make that one stand up to more than a stiff breeze.

Best case: a bunch of donors band together to sue. Raise a big stink. Tie a skunk around this dipshit’s neck. Make him rack up a shit-ton of legal bills during the demurrer and Order to Show Cause stages of litigation. Maybe make him defend an injunction of some sort. Start bleeding him dry during the discovery phase.

Which is usually when the Federal Judges step in and say “Settle this, or I’ll start making decisions that neither of you likes.” If he’s insured, the insurance company usually starts putting the screws on to settle. Otherwise, you just keep upping the ante until he kicks loose with some coinage.

Really strong imagery, there. Bit of the Wandering Aengus.

I had to look up your reference. Fascinating! And the poem has quite a resonance.

Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s I used to read Analog Magazine. There were two stories in it that still stick in my mind. Sadly I no longer have the names or authors of either.

The first story was of a man who had been marooned on a previously unexplored planet. During the story he slowly makes contact with the inhabitants of the planet and starts to learn about, appreciate, and assimilate into their sophisticated and subtle culture.

At which point the rescuers barge/blunder onto the scene and rescue/kidnap him back to his world. Needless to say, he desperately wants to return to that world, but never will be able to.

I see now it followed the Yeats poem’s storyline. Thank you!

Since I have done a bit (quite a bit) family history research… and that includes of those who moved west from the original 13 colonies… one of the wonderful things to discover is that many communities have public libraries full of local stories in newspapers and misc. publications.

Oh… and family history libraries are full of books written about, get this, the settlers who moved west.

Now, if the NPR tweet-writer is thinking there are not so many critical-historical review of these publications and artefacts, then perhaps that may be true.

While there are quite a few hagiographies (and genealogy is often bent in that direction) that need to be disassembled, still, there are libraries full of American history about the settling of the North American continent.

Interesting, did not know that. The German settlers did take quite a beating in Texas during the Civil War.

One side of my family were Germans that settled along the Kansas-Missouri border in the 1840-1870 period.

And yes, the Civil War in the Missouri/Arkansas region was pretty much a brutal ethnic war between the English who moved in from the South and the later arriving German settlers. The only reason the Germans won there, was because there were a lot more Germans than English in the Missouri/Arkansas/Kansas region

Yeah, the background of the folks fleeing Germany in the mid-1800s is that a lot of them were basically slaves for centuries under the (not-so)Holy Roman Empire.

They’d gotten fucked over by generations of land-owning shitheels, and they weren’t coming to a new country that promised freedom, only to see that cycle repeating itself.

Also, they hated the snotty, sneering, arrogant English. Deep aversion to “peacocking” in the Germans.

My surname is German. My Dad’s grandfather emigrated from Germany as a boy after the establishment of the German emperor. As my Dad as well as his own father were brought up Roman Catholic, I had always thought that we probably left since Otto von Bismark wasn’t too fond of Catholics but now that I’ve discovered the direct line is Lutheran, I don’t know. That said, the Catholicism seems to have come from his grandmother’s mother’s parents who were Catholics from the state of Baden. The Civil War second great grandfather I’m not sure was Catholic or Lutheran, a distant cousin told me there may have been a family schism over religion.

If you have not yet done so, go down to the National Archives. They have copies of all of the files associated with veterans. I went down there in the 1970’s and pulled up the documents associated with relatives that served during the Civil War. I seem to remember that they also have national pension records there.

Please note that a lot of WW2 records were lost in a huge fire at a St Louis archive back in the ?1970s?.

Also, I believe that records are released only after a delay of ?50? years.

The pension application records can be quite interesting. I have a book about a Revolutionary War Battle based upon the not only on the contemporaneous records and reports, but also the pension applications

Yeah a genealogist based in Ohio was making trips to the NA. He got me my second great grandfather’s pension records. Finally identified the name of his hometown! But yeah I’m still waiting for Korean War records. I really don’t know too much about my own grandfather’s service records and I’m curious about them since I’m named after him and he always told us they thought he would have been officer material had he wanted it but eh was happy with civilian life.

I’ve since discovered that conscription was mandatory for all men in the Austrian-Hungarian and German empires during this time so it makes me think that my second great grandfather, the other German one who I share my surname with was likely a veteran of one of Otto’s wars of German unification. Not sure. I did later discover through talking to one of my Great Grandfather’s brother’s granddaughters that the brother was in the Pennsylvania National Guard in the lead up to WWI. I always wondered about how my Great Grandfather felt about the World Wars being a German native. I do know he was on the Ration board and I don’t know if he spoke accented English. I assume not since he came over so young.

I find cultural stories fascinating. They often describe how groups identify themselves and can be quite powerful. The inner-narrative, so to speak.

One recent example I bumped into was a song by Gjallerhorn. I have posted other songs by them on lgf.

This song is in Finnish, which I find quite impenetrable. Using Google Translate rendered a very incoherent translation into English.

Something about digging up a burning caterpillar and burning the whole place down. I wondered whether the song was an allegory about finding a nuclear bomb or digging up a demon ala Lord of the Rings Mines of Moria.

Then I saw a reference that it was based upon the Finnish Kalevala Saga. A poem written in the late 19th Century.

Still working on this. But it’s a journey, not a destination.

You should have. I mean it’s obvious the guy was a scam-artist. It must suck to hate Hispanic immigrants that much tho.

Happy Mothers day!

Rest In Peace Mom. Know that your kindnesses, your love, your lessons gentle and hard made me the man I am today. To this very day so long after you left this earth you live in my soul, my heart and my mind. The hardest days are still made easier by you, even in your physical absence. I love you Mother, Thank You For Everything.

So in honor of mother’s day. I posted photos of all the women I directly descend from. One of my German cousins who I’ve met through my research commented on my second great grandmother’s photo(her third great grandmother’s sister) and said she had some information that she would provide to me that her family has that was written about her or something like that. Very exciting. I know for a fact that she and her sister in law (the wife of my second great grandfather’s brother) traveled back to Germany sometime in the early 1900’s before my grandfather was born and I have a letter she wrote another sister. So I’m eager to learn more about her.

I hope he doesn’t have a family that needed it.

Texas……

My brother lives in Boerne, TX. It’s one of those German “Free-Thinker” areas that had conscription issues. As Brother said it’s not unheard of in these parts to see a couple of old boys in rough boots, spurs, and hats to be in an old world conversation over tea on a hot Texas afternoon.

re: #218 Charles Johnson

Apparently there’s some kind of huge controversy firing up the left against Alyssa Milano. I guess she’s unwilling to call Joe Biden a war criminal or something; I started looking at a few tweets and my eyes glazed over instantly. Too many grievances, too little time.

WTF? As a leftist I have never understood the American Left’s love of implosion and self destruction. Joe’s a decent old man, not what I want for president but hardly in need of that. I sometimes wonder how we manage to make any progress at all.

He was married to my friend. He was cheating on her. After the divorce, it came out that everything he bragged about having… the house/Harley/boat/pickup etc… She paid for it all. And she sold all but the house too! ;)

His kids are all grown, and want nothing to do with him either. Well before all of this.

Purity police. That’s the damning thing. Perfect as the enemy of better.

Because they’re obsessed with purity. They have no sense of pragmatism. Biden’s actually pretty low on my list of the candidates that are running but I’d gladly take him over Trump. I would hope that after nearly 2 1/2 years of Trump, they’d realize their foolishness.

Ahhh then I don’t feel bad at all.

It’s frustrating. I get not wanting Biden to be the nominee. I think we can do better but come the hell on.

re: #130 Colère Tueur de Lapin

Welsh are the original natives to the British isles before the Romans kicked them out and then the Saxons. No one admits to being Welsh.

(1/2)? /

not “no one”…

Tom Jones It’s Not Unusual 1965

And Princess Kate is Welsh.

The pub I used to hang out at on Santa Monica Pier (the Crown & Anchor) was owned by Welsh people, and lots of the regulars were Welsh. When Tom Jones played in LA, they took a whole busload to the show and they had a big Welsh flag…

(our arch-rivals in the darts league, the King’s Head, was full of English people. I don’t understand a word of Welsh, but the tone of voice the C&A crowd used when cursing them made their animus clear).
