Jordan and Kobi Libii each embed themselves with very different activist groups – one white, one black – who want to make people rethink how they view guns.

Klepper airs Thursdays at 11:30/10:30c on Comedy Central.

About Klepper:
Klepper is a docuseries that follows host Jordan Klepper as he hits the road and leaves the comfort of his desk behind. Whether he’s in a capsized boat with environmental protesters in a Louisiana bayou or waiting to post bail at the Fulton County Jail in Georgia, Jordan is on the front lines of American activism.

(CNN)- Sometimes called “Columbiners,” they romanticize and idealize the student killers behind the 1999 mass shooting that claimed 13 lives at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

Now, 20 years after the massacre, the Jeffco Public Schools district is asking its community whether the high school should be torn down and rebuilt in an effort to temper this subculture of online fans who remain infatuated with the killing and the teenage shooters.

“School shooters refer to and study the Columbine shooting as a macabre source of inspiration and motivation,” Jason Glass, district superintendent, says in a letter to the community.

The move comes less than two months since the FBI said a high school student who was “infatuated” with the Columbine shooting traveled from Florida to Colorado and made credible threats.

The threats forced the closure of schools in 19 Colorado districts in April before the woman — 18-year-old Sol Pais — was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Glass’ letter says the school has a gravitational pull for many people.
“Annually, local law enforcement and Jeffco’s Department of School Safety make contacts with hundreds of individuals seeking to enter the school and reconnect with the 1999 murders,” he wrote.

“Most of them are there to satisfy curiosity or a macabre, but harmless, interest in the school. For a small group of others, there is a potential intent to do harm.”

A record number of individuals have tried to enter the school illegally or trespass on the property as the tragedy marks its 20th anniversary, Glass says.

Why bother actually dealing the problems that are causing these people to become dangerous and obsessed with Columbine when we can just knock the building down and start over?

In Texas and many other parts of the USA, mosques would be entirely within their rights to arm members with AK-47s and post them outside during open-carry Islamophobe demonstrations. Imagine the response if they did though.

And that’s one of many things that infuriate me about this country.

Because it’s easier to just destroy the building than rebuild the mental state of the community.

De jure? Yes. Dr facto? Gunned down like Philandro Castile. Non whites do not have 2nd amendments rights and the NRA is hard at work keeping it that way.

this is why i do not engage crackpots

From that post and apropos:

I don’t have to have an epistemological argument about the nature of science and reality every time a crackpot comes along who doesn’t like some scientific fact or conclusion. Or wants to put one forth that they can’t conclusively, let alone even remotely, prove - other than by rhetorical twaddle.

Anti vaxers are afraid of something that’s not in vaccines. You don’t sit down and calmly, rationally “discuss” and explain this to someone, or the world, that they’re afraid of something that has never existed in reality. You say clearly and loudly “that’s crackpot fantasy (dangerous) thinking ” and move on.

Since they can’t make their point through counter scientific/math analysis, they attempt to tear down the mechanism that drew the conclusion.

Are they doctors?
Published researchers with advanced degrees?
No.
Let them learn the language, science, math.
Then do the science and math with the language.
Let them prove they deserve, yes earned the right to participate in the discussion.

Correlation ≠ Causation
You have to have additional proof

Exactly, and that’s why I never do engage these poor deluded people - mockery is the only attention they get from me.

There was a time when I did engage with anti-science types and tried to reason with them, and it never ended well. Even if one in 10,000 people (a very optimistic estimate) might be sincerely educated out of this garbage, it’s not worth the effort and annoyance to try.

I’ve been a subscriber to the Skeptical Inquirer magazine for nearly 40 years.

I recently cancelled my subscription and I sent them an explanation why I think they have headed down the wrong track. I included a modified copy of the ‘dont engage crackpots’ lgf post linked above.

I didn’t really like Jordan Klepper’s comedy show much, but he’s much better in these more serious discussions. The update above has the full 45-minute discussion about this documentary bit, and it’s really smart and interesting.

Exactly, and that’s why I never do engage these poor deluded people - mockery is the only attention they get from me.

There was a time when I did engage with anti-science types and tried to reason with them, and it never ended well. Even if one in 10,000 people (a very optimistic estimate) might be sincerely educated out of this garbage, it’s not worth the effort and annoyance to try.

see what i just posted w/r/t Skeptical Inquirer magazine

Even worse, these days a lot of the people who spout this bullshit online only want to troll you, and if you try to argue with them they’ll play along as if they’re interested, ask for evidence and examples, etc., then ignore or discount everything you say and laugh at you. Who needs that shit?

So in other words Naders lawyer got brutally owned?

He actually tried the bonespurs gambit:

Judge Ivan reviewed a note from an anesthesiologist - not a cardiac surgeon or related physician - who suggested Nader be released for treatment, but was unconvinced of its credibility.

Prosecutors objected to the characterization by defense attorneys that Nader was desperately ill.

“When the government brought Mr. Nader to a doctor for evaluation on Monday, the doctor said, ‘don’t bring healthy people in here,’” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Prabhu said Friday.courthousenews.com

Water kills. Spread the word (and find out how to make a buck doing it).

Saturday night is the Festival of Shavuot, in which Jews celebrate the Giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai.

The holiday is typically celebrated by eating dairy foods, such as cheese blintzes and cheesecake. In previous years I would always make my own from scratch but this year it’s just me & Z so I bought cheesecake at the bakery and frozen blintzes at the supermarket. DON’T TELL ANYONE! The truth is, the bakery & frozen products taste just the same as I would make myself, without the hard work!

My kids sent these beautiful flowers:

And then my tin foil hat came on and I wonder whether the DoL would cook the books for the express purpose of getting the Fed to lower rates and help Dear Leader. What keeps me from going down the rabbit hole is that ADP had a similar report.

Anyhoo…am I the only that had this thought?

I’ve been a subscriber to the Skeptical Inquirer magazine for nearly 40 years.

I recently cancelled my subscription and I sent them an explanation why I think they have headed down the wrong track. I included a modified copy of the ‘dont engage crackpots’ lgf post linked above.

Behind the tags for the length, though it’s quick enough and does have some information not in the lgf post.

[Embedded content]

Isn’t the purpose of the magazine to provide a source to refute crackpot or conspiratorial ideas? It seems that if the magazine does not at least summarize these ideas and then refute them, there is no reason for this magazine at all. So, perhaps people should just go to snopes to find counterarguments? There are many ordinary citizens with no scientific training; it can be helpful to provide them articles from such a journal to combat ideas that others have suggested to them.

Also, that 5 °C increase is by no means an exact figure, it has a margin of error, so could be like 4°C or 6°C. And we only know that the 5(±1)°C caused the release of CH4 and further runaway greenhouse effect, not at exact what juncture the clathrate guns trigger is pulled.

It’s like it is with the threshold at which CO2 concentration begins to have a detrimental effect on peoples cognitive abilities. They tested test results at 500 ppm and at 1000 ppm. Which means that somewhere 500 and is 1000 is the actual threshold. We might be as little as 75 ppm from the climate crisis nerfing our noggins…

Yes, it is about vulcanism, which in the case of the Siberian Traps caused a 5°C-ish increase in temperature due to CO2 relase, which in turn pulled the trigger on the clathrate gun, causing at least another 5°C increase in temperature. And we are on a ride to a 5°C increase in global average temperature, which may pull the clathrate guns trigger again.

To quote a danish climatologist: “If even a fraction of the methane in the clathrate deposits are released, we’re fucked”. Yep. Said egghead dropped the F-bomb…

Warrior scientists and all that… Point being, it lead to the Permian-Triassic (P-Tr) Exctinction Event, where in round numbers 95% of all life on the planet perished.
For scale, the Cretateous-Paleogene (C-Pg) extinction event only managed a mere 67% extinction pulse…
And the Toba Catastrophe theory disaster (70 ky ago) only managed single digits, and it almost wiped our species out.

Just so y’all have an idea what the climate skepdicks, alt-right et al are playing with.

Mexico has a regular army and an organized militia, the the Rural Defense Corps, but no “national guard” as such.

In his inaugural address last December, President Obrador asked the Mexican Congress to revive the National Guard.

…..this time, as a separate service of the armed forces under the direct control and responsibility of the Secretariats of National Defense and Public Security among similar lines as to the reorganized National Guard in France and the United States National Guard, with a primary purpose to contribute to overall national defense and help protect the public order and safety, the relevant amendments to the Constitution are still under discussion in both chambers of Congress.

Some require “membership in a gun-rights organisation” (read, NRA).

As a result of some gun ranges requiring that, a new organisation formed called The Liberal Gun Club to get around the NRA.

Part of it is political, but not entirely. Gun ranges require liability insurance, and few insurers are willing to offer that to a gun range. Board members and general members of a club could be held personally responsible for liabilities if a gun range does not have insurance.

As such, the NRA has its own insurance programme for gun ranges. Because of that, many ranges will require members of a range be members of the NRA.

Another way around that is to get personal insurance and present that to the range master, but that is also difficult to do.

re: #101 Mattand

The municipal gun range here does not require an NRA membership. If you’re member of the local gun club, which is $100 per year, that allows access year round to the range. If you’re not a member, you can rent certain parts of the range (trap, pistol, rifle) for $100/day.

I have a few friends and acquaintances who voted for Donald Trump, and I have to admit I’ll never see them the same way again.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but my neighbor up the street has been a contractor all of his life. He voted for Trump despite me pointing out that Trump made his alleged fortune fucking over people exactly like my neighbor; stiffing them after they finished working on Trump’s projects.

The other problem was that he was all-in on the “Hillary is evil” bullshit. Couldn’t tell what exactly she did wrong; just that she was somehow worse than Trump. There was a huge dollop of misogyny as well. He was convinced that male leaders wouldn’t respect a woman President, despite that fact she was SoS for years and dealt with these people all the time.

One of my other neighbors voted for Trump because she was angry at Obama for the ACA. I don’t know if she was one of the few who lost her preferred doctor due to plan changes or what, but I still think it’s a fucking stupid reason.

I have no idea how she rationalized voting for a man who was recorded bragging about assaulting women, but that’s just me.

My “I’m an independent voter who always votes GOP” buddy has tried to commiserate with me about what a disaster Trump is. Been listening to Rush Limbaugh since he was 19. He’s one of those geniuses who insists that Trump happened in a vacuum, rather than the reality that this is what the GOP has been working towards since 1980.

So, yeah; if you’re a Trump voter, I really question your ability to think critically and empathize with other human beings.

The municipal gun range here does not require an NRA membership. If you’re member of the local gun club, which is $100 per year, that allows access year round to the range. If you’re not a member, you can rent certain parts of the range (trap, pistol, rifle) for $100/day.

I imagine the difference between the gun range near you and the one near me is yours is “municipal” (public) and the one near me is “private.”

As such, the range here requires membership in a gun-rights organisation (and they really were surprised there is a Liberal Gun Club when I first went to use it after moving here).

Thanks everyone for the 411 on gun ranges, especially Anymouse. My neighbor’s take didn’t sound quite right. He was still running hot after he’d gotten into an argument with the Tea Bagger/MAGAt up the street (the guy used to fly the Gadsden flag a lot.)

Absolutely. The grounds are owned by the town, with a sign at the entrance that says Public Welcome.

Flooding under way here.

Thunderstorms dropping an inch of rain in a few minutes has created small stream and road flooding west of me.

East of me, the North Platte River is out of its banks in the next two towns over due to snow melt from the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. Flooding is expected to increase.

My village is safe from the river, being about a mile away and part way up the Sandhills.

Coming home from Massachusetts, the flooding in eastern Nebraska continues, with us having to drive on portions of state highway 92 under water.

I have been sweating the Illinois River for some weeks. I sit at the very edge of the river bottoms, and the river is at all-time level highs, higher than 1993, and it is just staying that high. We have the National Guard, and FEMA and IEMA and all sorts of folks running around sandbagging and shooting levels. I _think_ my house is above the water level. I _think_ my garage may get wet. Have done a lot of shifting of boxes and papers and books. Decided I couldn’t afford flood insurance, as it is expensive and comes with a very high deductible. As I just had to replace my computer (it is in the shop having its brain shifted to the new model) and I have to put a new roof on as soon as it stops raining.

I keep saying: I’m too old for this!

Question for the gun owners out there: my neighbor and I were recently discussing the topic of shooting ranges. He claims that a lot of them require NRA membership before they’ll let you use their facilities.

It didn’t sound quite right to me, but I’ve never set foot in a shooting range in my life (although my partner and I have discussed doing so for the novelty a few times). Anyone ever hear of this?

My brother and I went to a range in Phoenix for sibling bonding time. I paid for it. I would have stomped out of there in a huff if they required NRA membership. Obviously, they did not.

Until about 15 years ago, I used to do a bit of target shooting and a small amount of hunting. Things may have changed now. But back then, no one at any range ever asked me for proof of NRA membership.

What I have seen is that many places will subsidize an NRA membership.

As AnyMouse pointed out, many ranges are business operations and admittance is a business decision. A few are public. and a few are private membership clubs. And, beyond the NRA, there are other, even more reactionary gun organizations.

I suspect that with interest in guns dropping, and support for the NRA declining, gun businesses are eager to expand their businesses, not limit them further.

There is an organization called the Civilian Marksmanship Program ( thecmp.org ) that serves a conduit for WW2 military firearms to US citizens. It requires membership in a gun organization. But it accepts hundreds of different organizations. Its the only place I know in this century that you used to be able to mail order a firearm.

I’m sorry to hear about your own flooding troubles. We did not go over the Illinois River returning home; we went over the Des Plaines River.

That said, the flooding information on the Illinois River doesn’t look very good.

riverweather.com

Here, most of our river is still in the bank, but at Llewellyn (about fifty miles ESE) it is out of the bank. Next station upstream (Lisco, about sixteen miles ESE) is right at “action stage.” We don’t have a flood gauge here because our town doesn’t flood from the river.

You’d think if any god was all-powerful, it could not be thrown out of anything.

As far as the oath for committees (which Mark Levin is talking about), it’s the same as every other oath in government service: “So help me God” is an optional formulation. One may also affirm rather than swear (as I did every time I took the enlistment oath since 1978, and twice for public office here).

Levin is citing Daily Wire, so I imagine it is just the same lying that Republicans have said about Democrats all my life. (Fun fact: The overwhelming majority of Democrats are Christian. We just don’t bash you for not being one, as that’s your business, not the party’s. Levin’s party practically requires being a Christian, as reflected in the recent move by a Texas county GOP to remove an officer because he is a Muslim.)

It’s good to scare Christians into thinking Democrats are out to get them though and paint themselves as victims (sometimes even seen amongst liberals arguing groups like FFRF are “militant” atheists even though that group is primarily Christians).

Checking Mark Levin’s claim with Snopes, what actually happened is a draft oath for the Natural Resources Committee was circulated at the start of the present Congress. (Every two years the new House reads, amends, or changes rules for committees.) FOX got their hands on the draft and started howling “Democrats are trying to run God out of government” (where by the Constitution he doesn’t belong).

That draft was amended to include the optional “so help me God” as has always appeared, and that was the version adopted.

A Minneapolis police officer convicted of murder was sentenced Friday to 12 and a half years in prison for the shooting of an unarmed woman who had called 911, and he apologized in court for “taking the life of a perfect person.”

Mohamed Noor was convicted in April of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the July 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a 40-year-old dual citizen of the U.S. and Australia. Noor shot Damond when she approached his squad car in the alley behind her home.

Noor’s lawyers had argued for a light sentence, saying sending him to prison would only compound the tragedy, and that incarceration won’t let him do service to make amends for killing Damond.

Friends in Low Places.

And I can remember that “Chris Gaines” rock song but not for the life of me place its name.

Also, this is every bit like U2 setting the record in 2011, because they’re each about as far from their heyday. Though Garth also increased the demand by being out of the game for a decade-plus.

Why not try it? Had the cop been white he’d have either gotten off (I was skeered!) or gotten a much lighter sentence. But a dark skinned cop killing a white woman? I’m only surprised they didn’t give him life.

Well I’ll be damned. Garth Brooks is the best albums-selling solo artist in the United States, ahead of Elvis Presley. He’s sold more albums than The Beatles in the United States. He also has seven diamond records in the United States (10+ million units sold), the most of any artist, period, ahead of The Beatles, who have six.
