Apparently that tweet that Dumb Jr responded to is a bot. I vaguely remember whispers along these lines about Obama in 2008 - he’s not a “real” African American because his dad was from Africa and his mom was white. Sadly twitter is going to give this bullshit a larger stage today than it had back when the first round of birtherism started.

Though it is interesting that the bots are going after Harris, that must mean she did well tonight (I didn’t get to watch much of the debate). From what I saw of the post-game analysis her line about being one of the students to benefit from busing that Biden apparently opposed was the big moment.

I’m also wonder if social media isn’t going to give some of these moments a longer life than they used to have. Yes, it’s way out, and probably not a lot of people watched these debates, but when people go on facebook or instagram, I’m willing to bet the video of that moment is going to pop up everywhere. And because of the nature of social media, it’ll keep popping back up.

I watched tonight’s debate with a group of anti-Trump friends — all of us over 60. One, who was not so into recent politics, thought everyone performed well. Another, who is an Eric Swalwell fan, was irritated that he wasn’t given enough time; she hated the format and suggested that everyone should be given the same question, with equal time to respond. Swalwell certainly had the best zinger of the evening.

Marianne’s first statement did make an excellent point — Trump did not win by presenting plans. Hillary had plans for everything — but too many did not care. I have no feel for what strategy that the Democrat can adopt to defeat Trump: as others here have said, Trump is not likely to debate the Democratic contender. If the media follows its performance of 2016 — and the recent Chuck Todd interview suggests that nothing will be different — how will the Democratic nominee get sufficient airtime?

Trump ran as the anti-politician, he sold his lack of any record of public service as a benefit. Now make sure that he gets his record hung around his neck. Starting with raising taxes on the middle class while cutting benefits to millions, on to keeping children in cages or “losing” them in the system.

Life in the USA in 2019 is all taken over by the presentation of the image and the management of one’s “brand”.

Sad but true.

Last night, Trump was attacked much more than Biden was attacked, but the candidates, especially Harris, made it clear that Biden ought not take this race for granted.

But for-profit media have to drive eyeballs to their product so running with any headline that is sensational enough will do.

this beauty pageant happened 9-12 months before it should have.

At least in this one the contestants didn’t have to worry about Trump walking into their dressing room while they were changing.

Greets and saluts from the soon to be sweltering NYC metro area. Night two of the debates is in the books, and pundits have thoughts.

It all still comes back to how to beat Trump and overcome the institutional and structural hurdles stacked against Democrats and who is the best to tackle the problems that the nation faces.

Trump doesn’t care about facts, logic, rational thought, and his base gives it even less thought.

I can totally imagine Trump trying to skip out on having to do any debates at all, all while trying to delay indefinitely the next census. This is a lawless regime whose party continues to put their full weight on the levers of power to retain power at all costs. The judiciary is being packed with right wingers and McConnell is making sure that Trump is insulated from any consequences of his lawless actions.

It’s not just the WH that we need to retake, but the Senate and state legislatures to begin having a chance at rolling back the reactionary know nothing racist agenda of the GOP.

The debates showed that 75% of those involved should be dropping out. They never had a chance, and never should have had a chance in the first place. Those who are running should take a hard look at considering Senate runs to take some of those contested GOP races. Want to unseat McConnell? Beat the fucking GOP in the Senate so that Democrats retake the majority. This is hard work, and requires a dedicated effort. We need a redoubling of the 2018 effort, because all elections matter at all levels of government.

After 2 days, these are the candidates who should get the rose/stay on the island:
Warren, Harris, Booker, Klobuchar, Castro, and Buttigieg.

That is all.

Biden again shows why he’s run for the 2x previously and failed 2x previously. He might have a wellspring of good feels from being Obama’s VP, but as a standalone candidate, he reveals himself as a poor candidate who can’t get out of his own way.

Bernie’s the same guy he’s been for 40 years - with a slim record of actual accomplishment. He’s the gadfly crazy uncle that thinks he’s entitled to be next in line, and his supporters are doubly so.

Spring training. Fun to watch the old and new work out, get excited about some good pitching performances, check up on last year’s stars. The regular season starts this fall. But I like our whole team. They all support the fundamentals that we need to care about. While we may not all agree on our favorite candidate, we and they all agree on the important issues. This is huge in my book.

My concern is that Trump might simply refuse to participate in any debates, knowing that it’d go badly.

Of course, that’d make him look like he’s scared, so he might feel compelled to do so and then stalk around like a deranged lunatic just as he did in 2016 spewing empty platitudes, lies, and nonsensical word salad.

And it didn’t matter in the end either as the GOP carried the day for Trump.

The reality?

He’s failed to build any new wall. The immigration crisis continues to worsen thanks to Trump’s policies. The economy continues to putter along despite Trump’s efforts to undermine it through trade wars that have damaged his base (and some of them are beginning to realize it even with the bailout to farmers).

But the media will first state Trump lies without any of that context, and it will put any Democrat at an immediate disadvantage (and because media will magic balance fairy the fuck out of things to try and show how Democrats are no different from Trump and the GOP).

I had no idea what he was going to do or what he was saying but I did catch the one word. He seemed angry. Not sure why he came out of his shirt. Perhaps it was reflexive, like before doing a cannonball into a local swimming hole.

I agree. Which is why, when someone said that we’re not looking for a candidate only Democrats vote for, I mostly disagree. We should be looking for the candidate that will draw out the most Democrats, the one that will inspire them. And that’s going to take someone who inspires minorties, women, and the middle and lower class to vote. I think there’s a lot of possible candidates that fit that.

As political observers we often focus on text at the expense of subtext, the libretto at the expense of the score, where the real story is told. The big winner tonight was Kamala Harris. She was consistently strong in her answers. Her dramatic confrontation with Joe Biden is clearly the story of the evening. But again, score over libretto. Somewhat like Booker last night but much more so, she took possession of the room and turned it to her advantage. She repeatedly kept talking until she was done talking and did it without sounding rude or grating. She could do that because she embodied command. She made the moderators sound annoying. She continually showed through actions rather than words that she’s powerful, that she commands the room, that she shapes the moment rather than being shaped by it. This sort of demonstration of command is always important. It’s especially important when the ultimate opponent is Donald Trump. She was far and away the big winner.

His past stance on busing directly impacted millions of schoolchildren including one who debated him last night. It’s a nomination not a coronation. Putin’s Real Long Game

The world order we know is already over, and Russia is moving fast to grab the advantage. Can Trump figure out the new war in time to win it?

First, it is a war. A thing to be won, decisively — not a thing to be negotiated or bargained. It’s all one war: Ukraine, Turkey, Syria, the Baltics, Georgia. It’s what Vladislav Surkov, Putin’s ‘grey cardinal’ and lead propagandist, dubbed “non-linear war” in his science fiction story “Without Sky,” in 2014.

Second, it’s all one war machine. Military, technological, information, diplomatic, economic, cultural, criminal, and other tools are all controlled by the state and deployed toward one set of strategic objectives. This is the Gerasimov doctrine, penned by Valery Gerasimov, the Russian Chief of the General Staff, in 2013. Political warfare is meant to achieve specific political outcomes favorable to the Kremlin: it is preferred to physical conflict because it is cheap and easy. The Kremlin has many notches in its belt in this category, some of which have been attributed, many likely not. It’s a mistake to see this campaign in the traditional terms of political alliances: rarely has the goal been to install overtly pro-Russian governments. Far more often, the goal is simply to replace Western-style democratic regimes with illiberal, populist, or nationalist ones.

Third, information warfare is not about creating an alternate truth, but eroding our basic ability to distinguish truth at all. It is not “propaganda” as we’ve come to think of it, but the less obvious techniques known in Russia as “active measures” and “reflexive control”. Both are designed to make us, the targets, act against our own best interests.

Fourth, the diplomatic side of this non-linear war isn’t a foreign policy aimed at building a new pro-Russian bloc, Instead, it’s what the Kremlin calls a “multi-vector” foreign policy, undermining the strength of Western institutions by coalescing alternate — ideally temporary and limited — centers of power. Rather than a stable world order undergirded by the U.S. and its allies, the goal is an unstable new world order of “all against all.” The Kremlin has tried to accelerate this process by both inflaming crises that overwhelm the Western response (for example, the migration crisis in Europe, and the war in eastern Ukraine) and by showing superiority in ‘solving’ crises the West could not (for example, bombing Syria into submission, regardless of the cost, to show Russia can impose stability in the Middle East when the West cannot).

Bolton’s connection to (ie “employment by”) MEK suggests a possible scenario for the amateurish tanker attacks in the Gulf. I don’t believe that the US Navy would be willing to carry out this kind of false flag attack, and if they were, they would have blown the ships sky-high with actual Russian torpedoes like Iran’s rather than knocking a few holes in them with dubiously sourced limpet mines. Bolton, however, has the contacts and the information access to at least be helpful in staging such an operation. Though very warlike he is a little fuzzy on how military operations actually work, and it could well look like a good idea to him in light of his objectives.

“I wanted to confirm that this was all true, so I started calling a few people, and I got confirmation in various emails that this was all true,” Margaret Stock, an Alaska-based attorney, told Military Times in a Thursday phone interview…..

The memos show that both deferred action and parole in place are being eliminated for service members, veterans and their families, “with the exception of the immediate relatives of United States citizens ― and those are people who don’t actually need deferred action, for the most part,” because they have another path to legal residency, Stock said.

That covers military veterans, current service members and family members ― including parents, spouses and children ― in both the active and reserve components, she said.

“And then they’re also going to eliminate parole in place for family members, veterans, reservists, National Guard and all active duty people,” she added.

The changes will also affect troops serving under the Military Accessions Vital to National Interest program, which allows green card holders to serve in the military and eventually apply for citizenship.

While the more liberal members of the House are furious, Pelosi probably realized that even if the Senate had passed the House bill, Trump would not have signed it, since he wants the kids to suffer in order to deter future immigration. By going along with the Senate bill, the kids may get some help. This bill is a kind of asymmetric warfare. The Democrats really want to pass something, but the Republicans don’t really need the bill and would have been happy to have it die as long as they could place the blame on the Democrats. So Pelosi caved in order that the children got some help. In any negotiation about anything, if one side really wants a deal and the other doesn’t care one way or the other, the side that wants a deal is at the mercy of the other one.

I grew up in Gary, where my mom, a widow, could not afford to join all the other whites in their flight to the suburbs.

These people have little idea of the dynamics of race relations and how they relate to real estate and education.

Other black people who aren’t African-American — Haitians. Dominicans. A significant percentage of Panamanians. Americans whose parents or grandparents came from Trinidad or the Bahamas or other West Indies islands. Americans and Brits and French and Norwegians whose parents or grandparents came from Nigeria or Kenya. French people whose parents or grandparents were from Angola. Israelis whose parents or grandparents were from Ethiopia or Sudan.

A lot of white flight was deliberately engineered by the federal gov’t, or state legislatures, and a lot of the white people who flee’d wouldn’t have cared about minority neighbors or schools with diverse student bodies.

But subsidized mortgages in neighborhoods where single-family dwellings with nice yards, generous libraries and parks and community pools and brand-new spacious schools with small class sizes and football fields and baseball fields and state-of-the-art science labs…

And brand-new multi-lane highways from your suburb into the city, and new shopping centers near your home, and factories moving from the city to out beyond the suburb ‘cause land was cheaper there…

The individual desire to have cleaner air, quiet at night and a 2-car garage and a lawn and a flower garden made it really easy to not even notice that FHA regulations required these towns to be whites-only.

ETA: Busing was a 1970’s attempt to ameliorate some of the (predictable) results of these 1940’s/1950’s/1960’s land-use laws.
