Got CL’d.

Something I wrote a few days ago while spending time down by the water:

Low Tide

It comes and it goes,
but why? I don’t know.
Just another little mystery
Of life I suppose.

It exposes and hides,
What nature keeps deep inside.
Sometimes it’s quite narrow,
others it stretches out wide.

It ebbs and it swoons,
By the will of the moon.
The old cosmic dance,
To a long ago tune.

It’s the unflappable motion,
from the heart of the ocean.
And to the grains of sand
Shows its quiet devotion.

So I went out to play a gig this afternoon, and while we were out we had some rather extreme weather. NOAA says it wasn’t a tornado, but the Weather Service says it was.

All I know is that there are trees down all over our neighborhood, and one of them is resting on our shed in the back yard. I’m thinking tornado.

The Storm Prediction Center is showing only four tornado reports today on its map, all in South Dakota.

Trump took Tucker Carlson to North Korea, not John Bolton

Several journalists reported seeing Carlson on the sidelines of Trump’s historic visit to the the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea, and the hosts of “Fox & Friends” confirmed Carlson was there during a phone interview with him.

Meanwhile, Bolton was shipped off to Mongolia over the weekend.

While speaking to his Fox colleagues, Carlson defended Trump’s friendliness with the brutal North Korean dictator.

I think we’re about to get trampled here. Storm-relative radial velocity radar shows wind shear in the new storms, though that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

He’s the top article over at Quillette (no link here)

Antifa’s Brutal Assault on Andy Ngo Is a Wake-Up Call—for Authorities and Journalists Alike

The Antifa thugs who attacked Quillette editor and photojournalist Andy Ngo in Portland yesterday did not quite manage to crack his skull. But they did manage to induce a brain hemorrhage that required Ngo’s overnight hospitalization. (For those seeking to support Ngo financially as he recovers, there is a third-party fundraising campaign.) The scene was captured by local reporter Jim Ryan, whose video can be accessed at the link below. We caution readers that it is an unsettling spectacle—by which we mean not only the violence itself, but the unconstrained glee this pack of mostly young men exhibit as they brutalize a journalist whom they’d spent months demonizing on social media, and whom they’d explicitly singled out for attack.

“Trolled” assumes that they’re not in on the con. Portland PD was caught redhanded collaborating with the local Nazi and white supremacist groups, remember.

re: #35 sagehen

Can we stop pretending Antifa is real? They are sock puppets for the Alt Right.
If Antifa were real, they would be spraying Trump’s golf courses with Round Up and freeing kids fron concentration camps. But all they seem to do is fulfill the wishes of the Nazis…how convenient.

The problem is that “Antifa” is real…just not the super-centralized, omnipresent leftist terror cabal people make it out to be. It’s a decentralized catch-all banner for protest groups like Black LIves Matter is/was. And, just like almost every protest group in the west coast, it attracted its share of Black Bloc nitwits making things tougher for everyone involved. And, just like anything emanating from any vaguely non-right-wing, collective blame is not only encouraged but demanded. Meanwhile, Proud Boys continue to exist and skirt by despite actual fucking central planning involved in that shit, not to mention the same white supremacist chuds with fellow travelers in police depts. everywhere.

It’s rampant double standards bullshit per usual, and its still fucking exhausting.

Turkey threatens Libyan strongman Haftar as six citizens detained (BBC)

Turkey says the forces of Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar will become a “legitimate target” if they do not immediately release six Turks.

The Turkish foreign ministry said the detention of its citizens amounted to “banditry and piracy”.

Gen Haftar’s forces said on Friday they would attack Turkish targets over Turkish support for the internationally recognised Libyan government.

They also claimed they had destroyed a Turkish drone at a Tripoli airbase.

Here is Trump’s machine plying the language of theocracy:

Amb. Friedman:
‘America’s spiritual underpinnings come from Jerusalem’

[…]

“What the Declaration of the Independence did was to rethink the relationship between government and the citizens… but how did the founding fathers know what rights to enshrine?”

“They came from the Bible,” continued Friedman. “And what place did the Bible come from?”

“The spiritual underpinnings of our society in which we honor the dignity of every human life comes from Jerusalem.”

It’s all a lie.

The Revolutionaries of the colonies were explicitly overthrowing theocracy and taking their clues from movements like Voltaire’s brand of Enlightenment.

Rights came from the Bible? Like the right to own slaves? Taking the virgin girls of a combat as sex slaves and killing all other women?

Yeah, none of that is in the Declaration of Independence.

I am so done with this “Judeo-Christian state” nonsense conservatives have pushed all my adult life. Christians spent most of their history persecuting Jews in the name of Jesus.

If the Founders wanted to put God in the Declaration and Constitution, they would have done so. Not satisfied with Lying for Jesus, Christians have to also lie about the Founders.

When the fascist group Patriot Prayer was causing trouble in Portland, it was uncovered the city police were messaging back-and-forth with them.

Texts Between Portland Police and Patriot Prayer Ringleader Joey Gibson Show Warm Exchange (Willamette Week, February 14):

The texts show that Lt. Jeff Niiya had a friendly rapport with far-right organizer Joey Gibson.

Hundreds of texts between Portland police and right-wing organizer Joey Gibson reveal the extent to which law enforcement officers talked to and even coordinated with right-wing activists in order to police protests in 2017 and 2018.

The texts, obtained by WW through a public records request, show that Portland Police Lt. Jeff Niiya had a friendly rapport with Gibson, frequently discussing Gibson’s plans to demonstrate in Portland and even joking at times.

Gibson’s events, occurring regularly in the Pacific Northwest since President Donald Trump’s election, have alarmed and enraged Portlanders—even prompting the mayor to propose new rules restricting protests. That’s because the rallies have attracted white supremacists and other extremists, and are often thinly veiled pretexts for Gibson’s group, the Vancouver-Wash-based Patriot Prayer, to wage violent street fights with masked antifascists.

Destroyer of Worlds (goes to Tortoise Media)

This is the story of the founder of 8chan.

He no longer runs the site, but has left behind a monster.

He started out as a wheelchair-bound pre-teen running a Website for video games. That site probably had less traffic than my wife’s main site.

The douchecanoes at 4chan decided to brigade his small community, and destroyed it. He had no idea what had happened to his site.

When he figured it out, he went to 4chan to read. That turned him on to the far-right channer culture there, and he eventually went on to create 8chan.

He claims now he did not realise the toxicity which resulted from him inviting Gamergaters onto his site after they were kicked out of everywhere else, just that he was concerned about free speech. That exploded the size of 8chan from a few posts a day to over ten thousand an hour.

As he became more radicalised, he wrote an essay published on Daily Stormer promoting eugenics (he’d looked into that due to his own genetic disability).

He has since transferred ownership of the site to an American veteran living in The Philippines and disassociated himself from it.

His idea behind building 8chan was primarily about the fun of software coding, which he’d done since he was given his first computer before he went into foster care as a child.

There is nothing wrong with being proud of where you are from, but there is also nothing at all wrong with relocating to wherever furthers your career and life.

That is something that is absolutely clear to most Europeans, except a number of soon-to-be ex-Europeans on that collection of islands to the NW of the continent…

Conservatives here seem to think that people should be restricted by borders, but money should be able to travel wherever its owners want.

Money has more rights than people in the USA.

That is one aspect of the global economy that has not filtered down to the masses who support supply-side economics: that capital will follow the highest returns, and those are more often to be had in places with fewer restrictions of worker health, safety and ecological protections.

And of course, places where wages are low and workers’ rights are non-existent or unenforced.

Corporations are people, but unlike people, they can be aborted whenever they prove a nuisance.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Trump continues to savage our national security and inure benefits to our rivals and enemies. North Korea laughs at Trump’s “superior” intellect. Trump tweeted for a meeting at the DMZ, and that’s what Trump got. He got a photo op. Jong Un got everything he could have ever wanted and then some.

We’ve even got Trumpworld saying that they might be okay with North Korea possessing nukes, which would mean that nuclear blackmail is on the menu to stay. Trump’s willing to enable North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, all while he’s drumming for war against Iran, which ended up acquiescing to the JCPOA and limitations on its nuclear ambitions. The lesson here? Go big and go nuclear and Trump will cave to get a photo op.

How is this even possible? Because we’ve got a GOP that is beholden to Trump and the know nothing base, and they continue to enable a corrupt and criminal Trump all while they know that they can gerrymander districts to remain in power and have the courts packed with right wing extremists for decades to come.

Oh, and throw in the usual racism, Islamophobia, and Saudis whispering in Trump’s ear to go after Iran, while China knows that they can use North Korea to bully the economic powers in the region like Japan and South Korea and Vietnam. Trump refused to join the TPP to counter China’s economic clout, and the end result is that Trump continues to undermine our strategic partners and allies while our rivals fill the vacuum.

It’s disheartening to watch how awful Trump is, and how the GOP has gone to the lowest common racist know nothing denominator to remain in power.

“Antifascist” is an adjective. It mostly describes the Good Guys.

“Antifa” is a noun, the name of a very loose movement. It is confused, sloppy in its associations, and infiltrated as shit by the Bad Guys.

They are not the same thing. Try to keep this straight until someone comes up with better language.

Not to mention, once again, demanding collective blame from a group opposed to them, while affording the agency to be ‘lone wolfs’ from anyone ostensibly on their side. Defining Antifa solely by the worst of them, the ‘bad guys’ using it as an excuse to do dumb shit the way Black Bloc twits seem to always do, and then using them as the ‘face’ of Antifa like every single person claiming the banner must be precisely like them. Oh, and not to mention pretending that it’s a monolithic centralized supergroup instead of the loose banner it actually is.

You know, meanwhile, Proud Boys and militia groups still get to wild as they please while being far more centralized and organized than any left wing group they paint as ‘terrorists’.

There’s no amount of civility that we could observe that would ever get us treated as better than the worst of the assholes on the right. You have literal murders, attempted murders, genuine life-threatening gang beatings, etc. from the Proud Boys and like groups, not even getting into the actual stock intimidation tactics they embark in constantly. But somehow, it’s Antifa that’s the existential crisis and the real danger, the group with no murder in their name, some charges of violent vandalism (as tends to happen with the Black Bloc dips in the PNW), and some assaults that have rarely even risen to the least of what right-wing agitators have done.

There’s no amount of good faith we can act with that will ever get us treated as valid, because we are always the usurpers in the GOP’s mind and the media continues to spread GOP word as Gospel.

Half the problem is that infiltrating things in the same way and same degree as the right has requires a stark lack of standards, morality, and general humanity. If the last decade or so has proven anything to me, it’s that so much of our institutions rely on a thin assumption of good faith on all sides, and the right has masterfully weaponized that to the point that any attempt to act against them, in good faith or bad, will always be tarred as the worst of bad faith while their craven cynicism will always be uplifted and exalted as the best of good faith. It’s all completely self-feeding right now.

But, but, the left doesn’t sing and make a huge deal about the Pledge so they’re the ones that don’t believe in it! They don’t even wear flags all over their body like a real patriot would!!

The right is the very demonstration of the ‘hypocrites who pray in public’ like Jesus warned. They’ve made it all about performative nationalism and anything less than that is literal treason, and anything you do to fight that impression just gets you squashed under the weight of eternal weaponized bad faith, and the media’s willing credulity toward the ‘real’ rulers of this country.

It’s barely even an uphill battle at this point because to consider it even a ‘battle’ assumes that one side hasn’t been handed the outright win over and over again.

“…Blease was an architect of Section 1325, the part of Title 8 of the United States Code that makes it a misdemeanor to enter the country without authorization.

But almost any ordinary person can be transformed into a monster under the right conditions. Think of 1984’s daily 2 minutes of hate. You just have to come to believe that the opponent is the manifestation of evil and your side is fighting for truth. Trump can’t even break 50% in Rasmussen.

That right there is how awful Trump is.

Rasmussen is known for manipulating polls in election season, so that they’re an outlier at the beginning and then closing on the rest of the pollsers averages close to election day - so that they can claim that they’re accurate at the end.

Rasmussen is also very thin skinned when you point out all their problems with their polling, methodologies, and their slant. Kinda like Trump too.

I know. There’s no way around the Senate, and it would take something so completely awful to get McConnell to even consider the trial of Trump for removal. But that itself is an indictment of the GOP - they refuse to adhere to the rule of law and would instead protect the criminal Trump.

If I were Democratic party leadership, I’d do pressers where 50% is impeachment related stuff outlining Trump criminality and the other 50% is policy stuff. Every committee can be involved.

Nah, you still vote on it. Force every Republican on the record. Spend the next decade campaigning against them as the party of corruption. Force them to own it.

McConnell is probably facing his last election - he’s 77, he’ll be 78 on election day in 2020, which means he’d be 84 if he ran again in 2026. But there are plenty of other Republicans who are going to have to live with being the party of corruption for a decade or two.

There’s no stopping them now.

I was reading an article about how trees communicate with each other by secreting some sort of chemicals or hormones through the root network.

Well, older threes do that, the milliennial trees just use WhatSap

i get the logic of going through with it and im not against it

what i love about the not voting idea is they cant do anything but watch
“i like republicans who are powerless and impotent, ok?”

But they won’t be powerless and impotent. Trump will declare - against all evidence to the contrary that the Democrats wasted time and money and still didn’t find anything worthy of impeachment. Congressional Republicans will fall in line. Activists on the left will call House leadership chickenshit and wonder what the point of electing Democrats actually is if they won’t do their damn jobs. The MAGAssholes will cheer that Trump beat the cucks in Congress into submission.

To borrow a line from Varys: power lies where men believe it does.

Republicans will see this as an opportunity to strengthen their positions.

HuffPo/YouGov polls about the debates… looks like Warren and Harris were the big winners. Both winning their nights with 59% of respondents. I found this tidbit interesting:

The survey also asked a few questions about Harris’ confrontation with Biden over busing in the second debate. Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters ― including those who didn’t tune into the debates ― said, 49% to 23%, that they trust Harris over Biden to handle racial issues, with the rest unsure or trusting neither. By a smaller margin, 44% to 33%, those voters said it’s more important that children attend schools with students of other races, even if it means busing children some distance from their homes, rather than saying children should attend schools near their homes, even if that means most students are of the same race. (The general American public prioritized local schools over integration, 44% to 30%, according to the same poll.)

On the question of improved/worsened their view of candidates, respondents were not kind to Biden or Sanders; but apparently really liked Warren and Harris. Biden saw 35% of respondents have a worse view of him (and a net -11%); Sanders had 23% with a worse view (but 25% viewing him better for a net +2%). Warren was +54% net and Harris was +49% net.

Going to be an interesting summer.

The right wing has flat out lost their fucking minds.

Did they not think that Trump’s weakness and reactionary foreign policy would result in something like this?

The Taliban are making threats, and will blackmail Trump into doing their bidding (or else face more terrorism and attacks in Afghanistan and elsewhere). If Trump pulls out from Afghanistan, every other tinpot dictator, totalitarian regime, and terror group sees that its tactics work, and follows suit.

Trump again made the US weaker, and undermined our security - all for a fucking photo op with a totalitarian despot with a nuclear weapons stockpile that he will never ever give away.

The RW is fully on board with withdrawal from Afghanistan. The only country they may care about defending is Israel, but other than that, they ignore any place else. Remember the Trump policy is “America First”, the same as that of the pro-Hitler committee in the United States before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Do Republicans Even Believe in Democracy Anymore?

Michael Tomasky: “A number of observers, myself included, have written pieces in recent years arguing that the Republican Party is no longer simply trying to compete with and defeat the Democratic Party on a level playing field. Today, rather than simply playing the game, the Republicans are simultaneously trying to rig the game’s rules so that they never lose.”

“The aggressive gerrymandering, which the Supreme Court just declared to be a matter beyond its purview; the voter suppression schemes; the dubious proposals that haven’t gone anywhere — yet — like trying to award presidential electoral votes by congressional district rather than by state, a scheme that Republicans in five states considered after the 2012 election and that is still discussed: These are not ideas aimed at invigorating democracy. They are hatched and executed for the express purpose of essentially fixing elections.”

Everyone below 1% should drop out. Frankly everyone below 2% should be gone. Booker and O’Rourke should consider going too. But vanity will keep them in.

Again….not a Bernie fan, but his statement last week that three billionaires in the US have more money than half the US population is quite literally true.

So because it is true, the Washington Post fact checker said is was false because….uh, you can’t compare extreme wealth with people whose meager wealth is cancelled by their debt, meaning they have no wealth, so the claim is false…?????

I am not making this up.

So, I took Trump to task for abrogating the JCPOA and his new press sec lying about it.

So then this guy jumped in…. claiming it was a bad deal and Iran is bad and lying about their nuclear production, except that he glanced over the part where Trump and his admin admitted that Iran was in compliance before Trump broke it.

Why the fuck would any country do a deal with the US if the US breaks its word even if you comply? Iran has no reason to go back and comply now. They’ll go full nuclear and that’s it. Right wing hacks will claim that this is all Obama’s fault, when it was Trump who accelerated the nuclear program. Up is down.

I don’t remember the full details. Maybe. I just remember having the conversation with him and thinking “Jesus, he cannot be serious with this.” First time I had seen the libertarian thought process up close.

Kilgore rarely got noticeably angry, at least when I was around. I was geniuely shocked by his reaction.

Goddamn it, this woman should be our President right now.

I was thinking about this today, in relation to the gerrymandered state legislatures where Dems get more votes yet are always in the minority.

Not only is is it idiotic at this point in our history that it’s possible to lose the Presidency with a majority of the popular vote, Republicans had to rely on the Electoral College fucking twice in the last 20 years in order to win.

This party literally cannot win elections without rigging the system, and most Americans, when presented with this, go “Well, both sides are bad!”

if im correct, the last time a non incumbent R (GHWB) won the popular vote was 1988 - 31 years ago

the only time between then and now an R (GWB) won the popular vote was 2004 reelection - 15 years ago
