Goddamn it, this woman should be our President right now.
I was thinking about this today, in relation to the gerrymandered state legislatures where Dems get more votes yet are always in the minority.
Not only is is it idiotic at this point in our history that it’s possible to lose the Presidency with a majority of the popular vote, Republicans had to rely on the Electoral College fucking twice in the last 20 years in order to win.
This party literally cannot win elections without rigging the system, and most Americans, when presented with this, go “Well, both sides are bad!”

As in, a bunch of little things that I can’t find locally and aren’t worth having shipped individually. I keep a list and order stuff every couple months or so. On the other hand, for my new granddaughter I ordered a car seat/stroller “system” directly from a real store. After I did, I looked on Amazon and it turns out I could have bought from the same store through Amazon. Why would you do that? It seems lazy.

You Can’t Be #NeverTrump if Trump Is Still an Option for YouLink by Martin Longman in Washington Monthly
For people like Bret Stephens and David Brooks, they’re threatening to not support the Democrat if the Democrat is too far out of the mainstream. That’s a clear indication that the reelection of Trump isn’t the worst thing that can happen in their minds, and that’s a moral judgment. If Medicare-for-All and free college and the abolition of ICE are more repugnant than being a suspected foreign agent, an obvious criminal, an opponent of NATO and friend of Putin, a menace to a free press, and a brutalizer of migrant children, then they should be clear that they’ll tolerate everything Trump can dish out to prevent the election of a far left-wing Democrat.
The Democrats want to win the votes of all decent people, but you’re not a decent person if you would consider Trump over the alternative. It is not “reasonable” to say “no thanks” to the Democrat because you think their policies are too far left if those policies don’t involve crippling America’s alliances and moral leadership while committing a litany of crimes, including crimes against humanity.

Litman said she is playing a long game to not only help Democrats win back control of government at all levels—but to keep it. That’s why she’s putting all of her energy not into the defeat of Donald Trump, but into the defeat of Republicans in state houses and city halls and school boards across the country, from Texas to Tennessee to Alaska.

Gazackly. Tom Nichols is a smarmy asshole, but I respect his position of voting for no Republican for any position at any level till Trump is gone. He voted for Hillary and urged others to.
Rick Wilson writes nice, cathartic columns, a funny book, and did actually take some of the blame for Trump, but when push came to shove, he put up a 3rd party guy (McMullin) and drained off anti-Trump votes from the one person who could have won.

One problem Dems so far have had in explaining M4A or other universal systems is that 1) Yeah, taxes will go up, but you’re already paying that money to insurance companies. You might not see all of it in your paycheck, but your employer calls it compensation anyway, and 2) Properly done, M4A might not ‘get rid of’ private insurance, but for most people should render private insurance redundant and stupid.
Among self-identified Ds and leaners, even liberals (51-37) prefer a universal system that preserves a role for private insurance. Right, and indeed that’s part of the confusion. What exactly do people mean by ‘private insurance’? People aren’t necessarily happy with their current insurance, but they are afraid of losing it. But M4A funded at anything like our current per-person expenditure on healthcare and your private insurance will seem like a punishment. Medicare is THE most popular healthcare in the US.
At the same time, something like the private supplemental plans people get currently to cover what Medicare doesn’t also makes sense, so ‘private health insurance’ doesn’t go away, except most of it becomes redundant.

There’s a decent small-c conservative argument that says having Medicare as a market competitor might be a better system - at least at first - because if it goes tits up, at least we still have the, um, (no pun intended) pre-existing system. There’s also the question of what happens to all those people who work for health insurance companies when their jobs are rendered obsolete.
Personally, I tend to trust people to make decisions as to what is best for them in their own lives, which is why I favor a public option.

There’s also the question of what happens to all those people who work for health insurance companies when their jobs are rendered obsolete.
Personally, I tend to trust people to make decisions as to what is best for them in their own lives, which is why I favor a public option.
If they had perfect information and equal access to all options.

Condolences to his family, but isn’t free soloing pretty fucking dangerous?
re: #122 Belafon

That’s one of the good things that the ACA did - if you’re on the exchange you get most all of the material information. Same if you get employer provided health insurance and they give you options, you get a nice chart telling you what the cost is, what’s included, and all that jazz. Including another column that shows info for a medicare option is pretty straightforward.

That’s an amazing argument for Conservatives to make, isn’t it? “We need to preserve a suboptimal system that doesn’t serve everyone, serves many people poorly, and costs like stink because we need to preserve jobs for low and mid-level functionaries whose jobs aren’t really necessary.”
Personally, I tend to trust people to make decisions as to what is best for them in their own lives, which is why I favor a public option.
I feel like The Dread Pirate Roberts Westley when Inigo offers him his word as a Spaniard - I’ve known too many people to trust them to make decisions as to what is best. Not that I’m advocating rolling over them, but the thing is, we really do all pay for this system, and if people stick with expensive shit we all pay for, for stupid reasons, I’m less inclined to let them make all the decisions.
It’s like the mandate - sure, you might feel like you should be responsible for your own healthcare. But if you’re in the hospital and run out of the money you set aside because you’re a Rugged Individualist, we’re not gonna toss you on the street. No, we’re all gonna pay to care for you.
So, no. You don’t get to opt out of the mandate because we have no provision to turf you when you’re broke.

Except for the constant reminder that people do not make the best decisions, especially involving risks of high costs and very low probabilities or events that no one has the knowledge to evaluate properly. People will make decisions based on what they think they can afford now and then suddenly they are stricken by a health catastrophe out of the blue.
When I was 17 I did a three pitch climb with my brother-in-law in Eldorado Canyon outside Boulder. I seized up and just got too scared about halfway up the third pitch (about 200 feet off the ground). Never did anything like that again.

I believe in a purely government solution (Canada, England, etc), but I can see having to allow private insurance for the rich to feel they have the opportunity to fuck over the poor. That would leave some jobs there, some in the expanded Medicare system, some retirees and probably not as many as people think, needing retraining and/or new jobs.
But in the end, I believe that it is a moral imperative to provide health care to all. It’s not that expensive when you subtract the lost costs of our current system (bankruptcies, lost wages, lost productivity, etc), get the marginal rate back to where it was prior to Ronald Fucking Reagan and significantly cutting back on unnecessary defence expenditures. As I’ve advocated before, we have far too many aircraft carriers. We have 11 in service, 2 under construction and 2 more ordered. Scrap the five oldest and scrap the oldest in turn as new ones come on line. Make similar cuts in their escorts. We’d still have twice as many as everyone else combined and the amount of money saved annually would probably pay for M4A by itself.

3) The entire system is broken, rotten and rife with abuse. And Trump doubles down on it despite the growing horror — child detention, metering, Remain in Mexico, threatened ICE raids. Every action he takes exacerbates and entrenches the humanitarian crisis at our nation’s feet.

Similar. The English Backsword (later called Mortuary swords - royalists put an image of Charlie 1 on the basket) was a distinctly English version. Single sided and the basket was usually ambidextrous. The earliest examples were found in the wreck of the Mary Rose and they would be common in the military till the rise of the saber in the 1700’s.
The Schiavona was double edged and the complex hilt was generally tighter around the hand and right handed. But both were cut and thrust military swords for an era when most gentlemen and fops were wearing rapiers about town.

The key to the two is distance. A bladed weapon inside of 10 meters can beat a handgun easily; it is one of the few legitimate reasons for some cops to shoot first and ask questions later.

re: #106 Blind Frog Belly White
One problem Dems so far have had in explaining M4A or other universal systems is that 1) Yeah, taxes will go up, but you’re already paying that money to insurance companies. You might not see all of it in your paycheck, but your employer calls it compensation anyway, and 2) Properly done, M4A might not ‘get rid of’ private insurance, but for most people should render private insurance redundant and stupid.
