Seen above, yet another pointless CNN panel.

OK, here we go again. CNN, in their infinite greed, has opted not to make embeddable live video publicly available, so here’s an old-school open thread for the discussion.

I’m already getting cranky, though.

Same with the Republican talking points complaint from debate moderators.

They are going to face Republican talking points from both Republican politicians and voters. If they cannot answer them satisfactorily, then they will get trounced.

Consistency is the hobgoblin of media mendacity instead of giving debaters the opportunity to delve into the subject matter.

But it’s not about the answers - it’s about CNN manipulating the conversation to suit their purposes.

And on that front - the DNC and all the candidates should demand that the DNC operate the next debate, and allow the network(s) to broadcast what they want. Let the Democrats control their own forum.

Maybe she and Christine “I am not a witch” can play sisters

To be fair to Christine O’Donnell, she said that line because Bill Maher dug up on her that she’d practiced witchcraft as a teenager. She later dumped that, but the “you’re not a Christian” argument was used to devastating effect against her campaign by Republicans.

On September 17, 2010, comedian Bill Maher aired a clip of O’Donnell from the October 29, 1999, episode of his old show Politically Incorrect on his current show Real Time with Bill Maher, in which O’Donnell said, “I dabbled into witchcraft - I never joined a coven. … I hung around people who were doing these things… We went to a movie and then had a little midnight picnic on a satanic altar. And I didn’t know it.” Her admission received widespread media coverage, and O’Donnell explained that she had been referring to high school experiences. O’Donnell followed up with a TV campaign ad for the general election which featured her declaring, “I’m not a witch”.

It was the follow-up ad that really sunk her campaign, because she thought she needed to counter the clip from “Politically Incorrect” Bill Maher played when he interviewed her.

Maher subsequently apologised after the campaign was over in another interview, and O’Donnell accepted it, citing the advert as the cause of the ridicule, not the clip Maher played.

As long as Republicans can run on the climate-change-is-a-UN-plot the GOP will be able to energize their (ignorance loving) base.

The Democrat candidates need desperate to reframe the issue, away from the UN, towards an economic one.

My libertarian brother really likes him; the one thing we agree on is that a UBI is a good idea.

My wife the former Libertarian Party member has also come round on UBI. The question now only is how much would be the proper amount. (For example, should it be flat for everyone, or indexed to cost-of-living: It costs a hell of a lot more to live in San Francisco or New York than it does here. Do rich people get it? [yes from me, everyone gets it], &c)

And that is due to bad local housing policy.

There’s plenty of room in this country for everyone; but lots of places have no jobs and the UBI would give people who can’t work anyway (or don’t want to) a place to go. Then those places would have to add a grocery store, a coffee shop, a crafting supplies place, an electrician/plumber partnership, an elementary school, etc., spreading economic development across a broader number of places.

Tulsi and the rest go after Harris’ record as California AG because the laws of California were followed.

It’s easy to say the weed users shouldn’t go to jail, but when the law says it’s a crime, then the AG can’t just blanket overturn the law.

It’s true that AGs have discretion on which crimes to pursue, but if for some reason someone goes to prison because they in fact broke the laws on the books that is hardly a condemnation of an AG.

This subtlety is not easy to sell, especially for single-issue voters.

The guy that sits across from me, the 2 guys on either side of him, and the guy next to me are all H1-Bs and I love them dearly.

My wife is not a fan of H1-B visas, but that is from personal experience in software engineering.

She noted after Digital Equipment collapsed and she tried to get another job in her field, job advertisements and such would be exceptionally specific and impossible. After a company ran that a couple months, that gave them an excuse to hire someone on an H1-B visa.

Those visas also really limit what a person working under one can do; they just can’t quit a crappy job and move on to another—they can be deported for that.

Chuck Grassley introduced legislation about a decade ago to curtail such fraud in the programme, but lobbying by the tech industry killed the bill.

During the Obama administration, a case was opened up by the Labor Department to investigate complaints against California Edison. They obtained H1-B visas for technical workers from other countries, then fired five hundred American workers. The Labor Department found no wrongdoing.

re: #196 MsJ

WTF?

While Trump cannot be prosecuted under the UCMJ for undue command influence, that sort of maneuver definitely qualifies. Moreover, it specifically breaks morale.

I have a Navy Achievement Medal. The Navy generally doesn’t hand those out like candy. In the order of precedence of military medals, it is the eighteenth highest award (on my ribbon bar, it is my highest). It can have a combat V if awarded for particular actions in combat.

The idea of revoking such an award is revolting. The Secretary of the Navy is a civilian; Trump can fire him if he doesn’t carry out this abuse. Unfortunately, active duty personnel are prohibited from protesting in writing or calling this decision or asking him to resist Trump (UCMJ—Contempt for Officials). If SecNav said “no,” Trump would just fire him and find someone who would revoke the medals.

I can’t find an instance where someone had a Navy Achievement Medal revoked before. Might have happened, but I can’t find it.

The officers assigned to try that case were not some folks out to “get Trump,” they were following orders by their superiors and applying their training and the UCMJ to the case.

And tons of conservatives will cheer over a person getting off for an alleged war crime, because conservative voters don’t see enemy combatants as people with rights under our laws and international treaties.

When we came back from Massachusetts, I-80 was littered with Tulsi billboards. It seemed there was one every five miles for four hundred miles.

I’m hoping she’s spending all her money right away and runs out.

Interestingly, I have seen no political billboards at all here, except for the occasional Trumphumper with something in his or her yard (but even most of those are gone).

Considering how close we are to even in polling about the presidential race when Trump won by +25 here, it would be worthwhile (in my unsolicited opinion) for the Dems to put up some signs here in Trump Country (marca registrada).

If I had the money I’d rent a sign for a candidate (not Tulsi or Bernie or Marianne).

Our policy is a bit different. Our H1-Bs were all long-term employees in India who requested time in the U.S. for them and their families. We sponsored them. If they ever wanted to go back or had to go back they would have the same jobs. They’re not taking “American jobs.”

I met all of them in India before they ever came here. We know each other’s families, etc.

I didn’t mean to imply or suggest that all companies committed that sort of abuse. There does seem to be quite a bit of it in tech though.

Yea, that’s true everywhere. If rich people move into expensive towers, that starts a chain reaction as vacancies open up for each economic level.

Building upwards in SF is very expensive. Mostly due to geology. Additionally, mass transit is also expensive, also due to geology.

Some places on this planet are just area-limited.

That’s why they built all those buildings on landfill in the Marina District. Didn’t work out so well (also due to geology).

Joe Biden wrote this shitty op-ed in 1981. I hope his views on dual-income families where mother and father are both professionals have changed. He should be asked about it. And I don’t think “materialism” is a bad thing if people want to better their circumstances.

[Embedded content]

He seems to be talking about limiting the childcare tax credit to lower incomes. In inflation adjusted dollars he’s talking about cutting the credit for people earning above $115,000.

San Francisco, San Diego, NYC, etc. are all so expensive because people are competing to live there.

More people, more competition. More competition, higher prices.

I don’t think it works that way. If it did then Manhattan would be affordable, for certainly no where else are there so many high rise expensive towers.

Look, I’m retired. I worry about hyper-inflation and the cost of living as I grow older. I wish prices were cheaper around here, but I know that the only reason San Diego is so expensive (for property, not so much for some goods like food) is because now over 3.5 million other people want to live here.

I’d love to take a bunch of conservatives who spout that nonsense around my area up and down the Oregon, Mormon, or California Trails, to see the grave markers made from wagon wheels or carved in stone of parents or children who died on the Overland Trail to the West. They must have been bad parents or something.

Folks walked from Missouri all the way to Utah, California, or Oregon. They died of measles. Dysentery. Starvation. Bad water. Freezing weather. Blazing heat. Attacks by Natives. Attacks by bandits. In one instance, attacks by Mormons.

And they started on the trail knowing all that might happen. They took that risk for a better life.

Desalination would make more than enough water.

It’s expensive, energy intensive and there is a significant discharge of brine that affects local ocean chemistry.
There’s also the issue of where you’re going to put all the cars. The roads are packed as it is, and unless the area is dense enough to make mass transit more economically viable, people just won’t be able to use it.

I understand that people want to live here, and I’d be thrilled to see housing prices drop significantly so not just the old (who’ve owned their houses for decades) or the wealthy can live here. I’m just not sure that increased density is going to be the answer unless we radically change how our society structures things.

re: #273 Deep State SuperElite Satinist

The entire Bay Area needs to build more AFFORDABLE housing.

There is one problem with the concept of affordable housing.

Capitalism makes it rapidly unaffordable. You can’t really force builders or developers to build X houses for $20,000 each, even if they had the land. They are going to build for whoever pays them the most.

On top of that, people moving into an area (despite what conservatives say about California) drive the price of existing houses up (more buyers, same number of houses).

That would be the same anywhere, it’s just more noticeable there.

If I had three offers on my house (assuming I was selling it), $18,000, $34,000, and $60,000, I’m taking the $60,000.

I’ve then become part of the problem of affordable housing in this area, since the folks who can only afford an $18,000 house were turned away so I could get more money, even though that’s what I paid for it. (And our house is one of the least valuable in town.)

Desalination would make more than enough water.

Desalination is very energy intensive.

Navy aircraft carriers and submarines use nuclear power plants to drive their desalination plants, and they still sometimes have to implement water rationing on the crew (subs almost always have water rationing).

Kuwait is the only country in the world where 100% of its fresh water is from desalination. Kuwait drives their desalination plants with petroleum.

Almost all commercial desalination projects in the USA have collapsed due to cost. The taxpayers are unwilling to fund such projects (muh taxes, that’s sochulisms).

Ultimately, there’s a water shortage because there’s too many people.

Quoting a water magazine lying around here (Wikipedia):

Desalination costs in 2013 ranged from US$0.45 to $1.00/cubic metre. More than half of the cost comes directly from energy cost, and since energy prices are very volatile, actual costs can vary substantially.

By comparison, I pay about $50 for 3,000 gallons in a month.

A cubic meter of water is 234 gallons. so about $13 to make 3000 gallons. Most of the cost in water systems is the delivery infrastructure.

Delivery infrastructure is a one-time cost (other than maintenance). Water plant infrastructure (such as a desalination plant, or a well) is also a one-time cost (other than maintenance).

Labour is a cost in a water system regardless of how it works (unless you’re stupid like me and do it for free).

Except when we have stupid people here ripping out curb stops with a front-end loader because they know a guy who will swipe a county front-end loader for a little under the table work, the only costs to our water system are electricity used to run the pumps, and service on the reverse osmosis units in the homes.

That is noteworthy that the conversion shows the cost of the water itself is lower.

In the past, the town used to distribute water to all the homes for no cost (before I moved here). About two years before I got here, the state changed the rules to require all water users to pay something and install water meters (even on farm wells), primarily to keep track of the actual amount of water withdrawn from the Ogallala Aquifer.

Demonization of immigrants is nothing new, of course. In fact, Trump’s campaign represents a kind of revival of a time-dishonored American practice.

Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.

1882 cartoon opposing the Chinese Exclusion Act.

The act attracted a lot of opposition at the time, some of it from a curious alliance of entrepreneurs and idealists, and there was sustained opposition the entire time it was in force. Interestingly, the radical International Workers of the World were the only major union to oppose the act, calling for its repeal from the time of IWW’s inception in 1905.

Such was the power of xenophobic fear, though, that it was not finally repealed until 1943, at the height of World War II. Even then the quota for Chinese immigrants was pathetically low, just 105 per year. This did not change until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 abolished national quotas altogether.

Doofus Dave, fake historian, fake Christian, real Republican.

Christian Nationalist Claims Constitution Gives Christians More Protection Than Atheists

Dazed and confused: Leading Christian Nationalist David Barton makes the false claim that the U.S. Constitution offers more protection to religious people than non-religious people.

Barton, a leading figure in the Christian Nationalist movement, was commenting on the recent dishonest and disastrous Supreme Court ruling that a 40-foot Christian cross on public land in Maryland does not violate the separation between church and state because it is supposedly a secular symbol.

Barton, ignoring the actual justification for the disappointing ruling, instead asserted that “religious folks” are entitled to “more protection” under the First Amendment than atheists and other non-religious “folks.”

David has also claimed that Jesus opposed the minimum wage and the capital gains tax.

Fun. Fantastic. We’re fucked.

We’re going to need a friggin’ cop to clean up the criminality of the latest round of conservatism in the government.

The whole “Kamala is a cop” thing seems to stem from a man who was exonerated in a court case after spending thirteen years in prison for carrying a concealed weapon (a knife; California’s three-strike law made that a mandatory life sentence). The Innocence Project was able to show the police accounts were not credible, and the judge in the appeal said the man had proved his innocence to his satisfaction and ordered him released.

Kamala Harris at the time was a DA and appealed the release order, which stretched out for two years. Her argument was the evidence presented did not show he was innocent.

That one case seems to be the entire crux of the “she’s a cop” narrative.

I don’t know enough about California law at the time to make an informed opinion about the case.
