An Unprecedented Moment: The Washington National Cathedral Denounces Donald Trump: “Have We No Decency?”

Politics • Views: 29,354

Another extraordinarily terrible moment in our nation’s history, as the leaders of the Washington National Cathedral issue a very rare public statement: Have We No Decency? A Response to President Trump.

The escalation of racialized rhetoric from the President of the United States has evoked responses from all sides of the political spectrum. On one side, African American leaders have led the way in rightfully expressing outrage. On the other, those aligned with the President seek to downplay the racial overtones of his attacks, or remain silent.

As faith leaders who serve at Washington National Cathedral ¬– the sacred space where America gathers at moments of national significance – we feel compelled to ask: After two years of President Trump’s words and actions, when will Americans have enough?

Yeah I can see it now…The Trump® National Cathedral built with Chinese steel and cheap concrete. Stained glass windows with images of Trump. Crazy racist grandpa is now growing ever more paranoid.

President Donald Trump has been quizzing friends, advisers, and media allies about the loyalty of Fox News, once his favorite cable network, the Daily Beast reported on Tuesday.

Citing three sources who have spoken with the president about the subject recently, the outlet reported that it is very much on the president’s mind.

The sources said Trump had repeatedly asked “What the hell is going on at Fox?” and remarked that he’s “been good to them.”

According to the report, Trump has expressed concern that the Fox owner Rupert Murdoch’s sons, who are playing key roles running their aging father’s media empire, are “very liberal” and has asked his allies at the network whether the younger Murdochs can be trusted.

He has also reportedly instructed senior aides to do more interviews with networks other than Fox News, which has previously enjoyed unparalleled access to senior members of the administration.

I figure it won’t be much longer before Trump and his administration are going to end up relying just as much on OANN as they do on FNC.

Replying to @lawhawk
It is due to Trump’s reactionary know nothing actions, including his idiotic trade war that casts uncertainty on business decisions and hikes costs to consumers. It slows economic activity. It’s a drag, and the Fed is trying to keep economy on level ground.

lawhawk
@lawhawk
But for Trump’s idiotic trade policies, the economy would likely be growing somewhat faster.

It’s also clear that Trump/GOP tax cuts did not grow the economy as they claimed/promised. It was a smash and grab to massively grow debt and give 1% bulk of benefit.

spot on, chris

FNC is the GOP’s media outlet. Indeed, that’s what it was created for. The FNC bigwigs are more concerned about protecting the Republican Party and advancing the GOP’s goals and interests; if they conclude Trump poses a genuine threat to the GOP, they’ll turn on him.

Well, of course. But I think we knew he was a piece of work before this additional item came out.
Fathering All the Children seems to be a fairly common male goal-which makes sense on a genetic level. The alternate strategy of fathering some of the children and making sure they survive to reproduce and supporting those grandchildren as well, seems a more civilized strategy.

Abbvie, responsible for killing everyone who wasn’t a baby during the holocaust. Stock dives days after purchase. Yesterday, I bought Exxon. They didn’t kill anybody during the holocaust, but they very much wanted to. Down a buck today. Just fuck it.

I don’t know anything about child psychology either, but I’ll admit, if a 3 year-old boy told me he was a girl, I would assume it was a phase, because 3 year-olds don’t know shit about anything. If a 12 year-old boy tells me he’s a girl, then that’s a different story.

The first time I got in trouble at school was in pre-K; I was in the sandbox with the boy next door (we carpooled), when he snatched the Tonka truck out of my hands and said those were just for boys. I responded by smearing paste in his hair.

Both our mothers were called; we both got in trouble.

5 years later, my brother’s dog chased him up a tree and I had to rescue him. 2 years after that, my other brother’s dog ate half his sister’s goat and left the other half on their front lawn. But 3 years after that, he was my date for my first cotillion. And another 2 years after that, he taught me how to roll a joint.

Haven’t seen him since we went off to different colleges.

Neighbors are complicated.

WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. These charts are deceptive; both Reagan and Obama entered the WH during financial crises when markets were significantly depressed. In these cases, you would expect an upsurge when the economy was being handled competently in response to these crises. Trump’s situation is different; the market was rising over the years prior to his election. The question is can he continue this increase until November 2020; if not, and the market has a significant correction, there may be many who would turn against him.

what we want is for every gun owner to control his weapon at all times. and to be held 100% totally personally, financially and legally responsible for everything done with that gun

that includes storing, brandishing, illegally carrying or transporting, “unintentional” discharges, irresponsible temporary or permanent transfers (sales or loans) to other people….

*everyone* should be for gun accountability

I own a gun. I have no trouble with registering it.

Interestingly, new guns are like any other product; the manufacturer has you sign a mail-in postcard to register the date you bought it for the manufacturer’s warranty.

If the government wanted to “round up guns,” they could just get the records from firearms manufacturers.

sure, some they could
a lot they couldnt because so many have changed hands without a trail - ie privately

i long since gave up on ideas like ‘taking the guns’ and mandatory state or federal registration databases and the like: lists, checks, bans, limits, training, other “behavior” requirements, etc.

they are non starters with 2A activists and there will never be compliance.
the argument that it’s the first step on a slippery slope to confiscation becomes null and void when i concede: no databases.

no one should be against 100% personal responsibility. if not you, the owner, then who?

in fact all their arguments become null and void when the focus is on culling out those who are demonstrably irresponsible. i’m even for juries only of gun owners.

while no one should be against 100% personal responsibility and strict liability they still are. and it’s obvious why.

Yes! And if the kid wants dolls or cars and trucks and to like what the other gender is “supposed” to like, then let them do it. My daughter used to play Barbies in the mud while wearing boys sneakers and a dress. She is still she. At 3 such things are hard to sort out for everyone, mom, dad, kid, everyone. Patience and love and just letting them be a kid is really the best approach, part of being a family is figuring shit out as you go. A teenager will be much more articulate and understanding concepts like gender and sexuality. Figuring yourself out is a process.

It was one of Bevin’s early pet projects in April 2017. There was a groundbreaking ceremony for it last year.
It was a deal between Bevin and Braidy Industries. Some background here.

It’s a $1.8 billion project and neither Braidy nor Kentucky has that kind of money.

So the money-raising is still not complete?

The company says it recently completed the “crowdfunding” portion of its common stock offering, which was capped at just over $1 million worth of shares.

Braidy CEO Craig Bouchard says Kentuckians make up an overwhelming majority of the 700 shareholders participating in the crowdfunding offering.

Bouchard says he expects all necessary financing for the project to be obtained within a few months. United Co. Rusal, a Russian aluminum company, plans to invest $200 million in the project. Rusal was under U.S. sanctions until earlier this year.

The proposed aluminum plant near Ashland is expected to create 550 jobs once production starts, expected in 2021

I guess the first question is, where do you get the moderators? If they’re not members of the media, who will they be and what are their qualifications?

The second question would be, how would it be any different than what we have now? The party set the requirements to get on stage (and obviously set them too low since 20 candidates qualified).

Third question: what happens if the networks decline the invitation to cover the event?

The wealth tax, as offered is also probably unconstitutional. Per Article I, Section 2, Clause 3:

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers

That apportionment requirement is why we don’t have federal property taxes, they’re incredibly complex.

A week after JNJ purchase, it turns out they’re responsible for killing babies during the Holocaust. Billions of dollars in liability. Abbvie, responsible for killing everyone who wasn’t a baby during the holocaust. Stock dives days after purchase. Yesterday, I bought Exxon. They didn’t kill anybody during the holocaust, but they very much wanted to. Down a buck today. Just fuck it.

Peter Principle — The fault is not his — he is totally incompetent and should never have accepted the appointment but then the fault really lies with the Senate who should never have approved him. Surgeon General — maybe — but HUD? no way. I don’t blame Trump for this — Trump knows and understands nothing about government. But the GOP Senators — they are the ones who knowingly and deliberately failed their responsibilities

I do. He appointed Carson to HUD because he’s a black guy, they know all about those “inner city hellholes” that blacks don’t want to live in.

Plus, deflect racism charges. “See, I have a black guy in my cabinet.”

Carson himself ran for President (early on in the race my county was flooded with Carson stickers). If he’s not qualified for HUD, he’s certainly not qualified for President.

Ultimately, Carson is a conservative, and they believe in grasping and expanding their power. Considering he’s also a religious wingnut, he fits right in.

There’s actual video of this, and I think we can confirm that dude got knocked clean out of his shoes. We have the photo/video evidence. Myth - confirmed.

The full video shows the OG getting tossed to the ground, then the young kid kinda victory jogs away.

Then the OG gets up, puts his Kangol back on and takes care of business.

As the comments say, in the aftermath, there was the moment where the kid on the ground got the lecture: “I didn’t want to have to do that to you, but apparently you needed a lesson. Now think on that.”

For multiplication it doesn’t matter, and for division fraction bars and parentheses should be used as needed to make what’s being divided by what clear.

I guess the first question is, where do you get the moderators? If they’re not members of the media, who will they be and what are their qualifications?

The League of Women Voters has long experience in this.

The second question would be, how would it be any different than what we have now? The party set the requirements to get on stage (and obviously set them too low since 20 candidates qualified).

Set higher requirements.

Third question: what happens if the networks decline the invitation to cover the event?

Livestreams. YouTube. PornHub. If the media wants to make themselves irrelevant that’s on them. My guess is they would cover it anyway.

The wealth tax, as offered is also probably unconstitutional. Per Article I, Section 2, Clause 3:

That apportionment requirement is why we don’t have federal property taxes, they’re incredibly complex.

Capital gains tax (cough), inheritance tax (cough).

Wealth taxes are not inherently unconstitutional. They are if they target specific people. A wealth tax targets piles of hoarded money.

That’s a sign that this isn’t really a math question — it’s a question about which rules are being used to deal with ambiguity. E.g., en.wikipedia.org

However, in some of the academic literature, multiplication denoted by juxtaposition (also known as implied multiplication) is interpreted as having higher precedence than division, so that 1 ÷ 2x equals 1 ÷ (2x), not (1 ÷ 2)x.

For example, the manuscript submission instructions for the Physical Review journals state that multiplication is of higher precedence than division with a slash, and this is also the convention observed in prominent physics textbooks such as the Course of Theoretical Physics by Landau and Lifshitz and the Feynman Lectures on Physics.

This also comes up only with the short forms of division (using /, or ÷) - if you use the full form of division, with the numerator and denominator explicit, the ambiguity disappears.

I said church organisations, not individuals or specific churches. And the National Cathedral doesn’t include the people who are not Christians, so it does not represent the whole country.

The National Cathedral is an important church, but only one Episcopal Church. Its oversight body has not condemned Trump’s racism by name (see the comment made above about the organsation of Catholic bishops and the Catholic Church’s selective outrage against Obama versus Trump).

They have not condemned the NIFB’s desire to use the State to kill LGBT people (though individual churches and parishioners have). No church organsiation has.

The key word in all that is “organisation.”

Nice strawman, by the way, saying “all belief is evil in your mind.” I never said nor implied any such thing. I don’t believe any religious assertion has met a burden of proof sufficient for adoption. That is not “belief is evil.”

The biggest problem with the acronym was PEDMAS suggests that division come before multiplication (and addition before subtraction) instead of the left to right rule. Once I acknowledged PEDMAS as something they heard of before, I never spoke it again. The students that did the best in the course were the students who mastered the order of operations or never relied on PEDMAS.

I did not know that.

Apparently they teach different things in different countries (per Twitter). I was thinking like Asia vs the West but Canada used BEDMAS (neither of which I know… Just the operations without the L/R) which results in 1.

So my math skills still suck.

I was great at basic math. I can still do quick calculations in my head faster than most but get to algebra and I’m useless. I have a love hate relationship with mathematics.

This also comes up only with the short forms of division (using /, or ÷) - if you use the full form of division, with the numerator and denominator explicit, the ambiguity disappears.

Exactly. In fact, if I were doing technical editing for a living, I’d reject any equations with ambiguous division like this.

The reason the same issue doesn’t show up for subtraction is that something like this
a + b - c + d
is always interpreted as a + b + (-c) + d, and then there’s no way to get to a different result by adding in different orders.

I’m not rich and I’m made money since 2009. How? the market is going up. The problem is most people don’t have the money to invest. The game is rigged, you just got to know that going in.

Not much different than a casino really. The huge investment houses and banks which literally try to situate their trading servers as close as possible to those recording the trades at the NYSE because milliseconds count make trading through a broker out here in Tumbleweedlandia a lost cause.

That, and you need money anyway, and I don’t have that.

In a dramatic downturn of the market, who are the brokers and traders going to pay attention to in the “sell” orders first? The ultra-wealthy investors, or mom and pop with ten shares of AT&T. They’ll get around to mom and pop after they’re finished with the million shares to sell from a hedge fund.

That’s the part I mean about the stock market being about wealth transfer from the middle class to the rich. Hundreds of thousands of people were wiped out in the Dot-Com bubble. Other than Dot-Com companies, no significant business or trading house was.

I’ve posted here before (so I won’t do it now) the video of a pastor in Springfield, Missouri using Biblical arguments speaking against an ordinance which would extend equal treatment rights to LGBT people.

I must offer an apology now.

The Washington National Cathedral did issue a statement about Trump’s racist statements (yesterday). Since I do not follow every religious outlet of every sect, I missed the statement by the Episcopal Church.

Have We No Decency? A Response to President Trump (Goes to the Washington National Cathedral official Website, more at the link):

The escalation of racialized rhetoric from the President of the United States has evoked responses from all sides of the political spectrum. On one side, African American leaders have led the way in rightfully expressing outrage. On the other, those aligned with the President seek to downplay the racial overtones of his attacks, or remain silent.

As faith leaders who serve at Washington National Cathedral ¬- the sacred space where America gathers at moments of national significance - we feel compelled to ask: After two years of President Trump’s words and actions, when will Americans have enough?

As Americans, we have had such moments before, and as a people we have acted. Events of the last week call to mind a similarly dark period in our history:

“Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. … You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?”

That was U.S. Army attorney Joseph Welch on June 9, 1954, when he confronted Senator Joseph McCarthy before a live television audience, effectively ending McCarthy’s notorious hold on the nation. Until then, under the guise of ridding the country of Communist infiltration, McCarthy had free rein to say and do whatever he wished. With unbridled speech, he stoked the fears of an anxious nation with lies; destroyed the careers of countless Americans; and bullied into submissive silence anyone who dared criticize him.

Wife and I will gladly give up a potential $250 to see Equifax dissolved.

When people first brought up the settlement here, they noted right away that $125 wasn’t going to be the final payout.

Considering the alternative was credit monitoring (one year for the other companies and ten years for Equifax), I opted for that.

Others noted they have things such as Lifelock so credit monitoring isn’t an issue, but since I don’t I’ll let Equifax pay for it.

I can’t get any of the several pithy quotations out of here, due to sticky cookies.

from outside or inside the deck looks stacked

Elizabeth Warren in 2014

A telling anecdote involves a dinner that Ms. Warren had with Lawrence H. Summers, then the director of the National Economic Council and a top economic adviser to President Obama. The dinner took place in the spring of 2009, after the oversight panel had produced its third report, concluding that American taxpayers were at far greater risk to losses in TARP than the Treasury had let on.

After dinner, “Larry leaned back in his chair and offered me some advice,” Ms. Warren writes. “I had a choice. I could be an insider or I could be an outsider. Outsiders can say whatever they want. But people on the inside don’t listen to them. Insiders, however, get lots of access and a chance to push their ideas. People — powerful people — listen to what they have to say. But insiders also understand one unbreakable rule: They don’t criticize other insiders.

“I had been warned,” Ms. Warren concluded.
