OT re the previous thread on being sober:

it’s a thing i really love about being here and interacting facelessly and without baggage

i relate to people on their merits and online ‘tone’. i learn what i learn about them based on what they want me to know, (or let slip)

your interests are varied and your experiences and areas of expertise are fascinating as are health concerns, families, etc.

and while i, like everyone else prejudges and sees through my own colored lenses - ie some he’s turned out to be she’s, etc., you all turned out to be taller than i thought.

when i learn stuff like this - these struggles and triumphs, i think, wow i didnt know that, and in not know that it didnt have any effect on my ‘evaluation’ of who you are and arent

i’ve been seeing the same doctor for 15 years. he talks about his adult kids a lot - because he’s proud - and because they were runners so it’s a logical topic for us.

last time in he mentioned he was a ham radio operator. and is like a master at morse code and using the key.

it was like peeling back a layer of onion or seeing a new facet of a diamond.

life is full of cool people.

I’m curious how they do the math. I suspect that many of those people would have had to sell stock to pay the wealth tax which would likely have driven stock prices down, further reducing their net wealth. And then there’s the question of what those sales would have meant for the larger economy - as in, what if Gates or Bezos or Walton or whomever had to sell enough stock that they lost their controlling interest in the companies they founded/owned/ran and institutional investor types were able to gain control of the board of directors?

A new Atlanta Journal Constitution poll in Georgia finds Joe Biden leading President Trump in a potential 2020 match up, 51% to 43%.

In other match ups, Bernie Sanders tops the president, 48% to 44%, Elizabeth Warren leads, 47% to 44% and Pete Buttigieg is ahead, 46% to 43%.

I think there’s too many downstream effects over 40 years to properly game this out. But I don’t think the “simple” math they did is worth much of anything.

They wouldn’t have had to sell any stock; they’d just have issued dividends every year (which they haven’t always). Those dividends would have spread the wealth more broadly, and increased a bunch of other people’s taxes too.

To a certain extent it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily wrong, either.

If Corporation X has $5m in profits, it has a choice - it can spend some or all of that money to expand (hiring new employees, opening new offices, buying stuff; either immediately or based on a plan for future growth); or it can issue dividends with some or all of that money.

But every dollar issued in dividends is one less dollar that can be reinvested in the business.

Remember the point of a limited liability company: investors are only liable for losses up to the extent of the share they own. If a company like that goes down in flames and its losses exceed the equity of the company, they lose their stock but still keep their estates and yachts and Cayman Island accounts.

That encourages them to suck as much profit out of the company as possible and put it beyond the reach of creditors.

Remember the point of a limited liability company: investors are only liable for losses up to the extent of the share they own. Disagree- Nunes would probably clarify his statement as being that they should stop holding hearings, because Trump is just SO obviously innocent of any sort of wrongdoing, and continuing with the “kangaroo court” is a waste of the taxpayers’ money….

From the LA area I think it ends up being about 6,000 round trip. My mom is planning to meet him in Canada for part of the ride. But they’re semi-retired at this point, so he can afford to take the three to four weeks off for the ride.

Yeah that’s one to do when more money is in the bank. Thailand intrigues me for a few reasons. It would be by far the biggest culture shock, I want to try Thai food in Thailand as it’s my favorite cuisine, the geographic variety. Chiang Mai is another intriguing place in Thailand. I’m saving my next abroad trip for next winter probably though. Hoping to get a week in somewhere next summer somewhere new. I always try to get see a baseball game in the city I’m visiting. I’ve always wanted to see a game at Wrigley.

Well that sucks.The wife and I have been kicking around doing an Amtrak trip across the US. Or at least Pittsburgh to Denver to see our daughter.

That would be a beautiful journey. I’ve had this crazy idea about taking one from Washington to LA. I’ve been to California twice but never further south of Santa Cruz and LA would be another baseball stadium destination. Plus some cool music venues too.I was going to do a weekend trip to New York after Thanksgiving since a band I like was playing but the singer got laryngitis so that plan fell through. I haven’t done NYC as a tourist since I was a kid. I’ve been several times since then since I have friends in the city.

Yeah, but a sole proprietor can declare bankruptcy and the creditors are screwed. With closely held corporations and LLCs you can try and pierce the corporate veil if there’s evidence of malfeasance. Yeah that’s way out of my range. If I were ever to do that, I think I would probably start out in Petersburg and then go to Moscow from there and then begin the trip. I actually came very close to going ot Russia in 2008 but no one else signed up for the trip at my community college so I went to Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Austria instead. I enjoyed that but the Russia trip would have been with one of my favorite professors who sparked my interest in the Cold War and international relations.

My brother regularly spouts QAnon conspiracies but claims he knows nothing of QAnon or Alex Jones — it comes down to standard GOP sources propagate these messages throughout the Internet and online newsletters. Anyone tuned into the GOP assimilates these stories and tries to persuade anyone nearby of their merits.

Am still waiting for Hillary and Obama and Comey to be arrested for their crimes against Trump. Going to happen any day now. Barr is on the case. ///

I have family members STILL expecting Obama, Hillary and Biden to be arrested for treason and molesting kids…

Trump & sycophants all have memory issues.

My thinking on this has changed dramatically in the last several weeks. I don’t believe they have memory issues, though they may attempt keeping track of their lies somewhat. This is similar to wondering if Trumpers believe Trump is truthful or not. It’s the wrong question to ask.

It doesn’t matter. The goal is to spout so much BS from all angles and such vigor that it completely mucks up any reconciliation of objective truth and reason. The goal is to destroy objective truth and reason, not reconcile with it.

I heard/saw something today that that stated TrumpCult has posited 17 diff excuses/reasons/stories in dealing with Ukraine. This is throwing shit up on the wall and seeing whatever sticks, then throwing it on the other wall, then the ceiling, then the floor. The goal is to throw up so much shit that it creates an immense amount of work for people resisting it. And for those that don’t resist it, become disheartened or throw their hands in the air and say fuck it.

The best way, not the easiest, is to put on our waders and raincoats, and help others put on the waders and raincoats. Objective truth and reason is important but thinking we can just deal some out and it will defeat the torrent of bullshit is inverse to the reality. More objective truth and reason will not win, because it is a finite thing, whereas bullshit is infinite and not with any limitation.

We need to inoculate ourselves against bullshit on a mass scale. We have our work cut out for us.
