Never, because nobody gives a shit about us X-ers. We’ll be the next after the Silent Generation to not have any president from our cohort. We’re just Megan Mullally off in the corner drinking wine from the bottle.

Business Insider did an analysis of what our rich people would look like if Warren’s wealth tax plan had been in place since 1982. Jeff Bezos would be worth $48.8B. Bill Gates would be worth $13.9B.

OT re the previous thread on being sober:

it’s a thing i really love about being here and interacting facelessly and without baggage

i relate to people on their merits and online ‘tone’. i learn what i learn about them based on what they want me to know, (or let slip)

your interests are varied and your experiences and areas of expertise are fascinating as are health concerns, families, etc.

and while i, like everyone else prejudges and sees through my own colored lenses - ie some he’s turned out to be she’s, etc., you all turned out to be taller than i thought.

when i learn stuff like this - these struggles and triumphs, i think, wow i didnt know that, and in not know that it didnt have any effect on my ‘evaluation’ of who you are and arent

i’ve been seeing the same doctor for 15 years. he talks about his adult kids a lot - because he’s proud - and because they were runners so it’s a logical topic for us.

last time in he mentioned he was a ham radio operator. and is like a master at morse code and using the key.

it was like peeling back a layer of onion or seeing a new facet of a diamond.

life is full of cool people.

I’m curious how they do the math. I suspect that many of those people would have had to sell stock to pay the wealth tax which would likely have driven stock prices down, further reducing their net wealth. And then there’s the question of what those sales would have meant for the larger economy - as in, what if Gates or Bezos or Walton or whomever had to sell enough stock that they lost their controlling interest in the companies they founded/owned/ran and institutional investor types were able to gain control of the board of directors?

Or Walmart? Would the board have used it’s reach to squeeze other companies like Sam did? Would the stores still be 24 hours?

Or Amazon? Would they have taken the losing revenue as long as Bezos accepted in order to get the company where it is today?

Perhaps they might pay taxes, too.

Perhaps they have to pay something for buying companies for the sole purpose of ripping them apart for profits alone. Talk about hits to local economies.

They wouldn’t have had to sell any stock; they’d just have issued dividends every year (which they haven’t always). Those dividends would have spread the wealth more broadly, and increased a bunch of other people’s taxes too.

possibly, but that also means those businesses likely grow slower, meaning potentially fewer jobs within those companies and/or contracts with other companies for goods and/or services.

You’re right that it would spread the wealth around a bit more, which would likely be a good thing. But then the question becomes what do those investors do with the money?

Which is why I think it’s way too complicated to just say “oh, they’d only be worth this much”

To a certain extent it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily wrong, either.

If Corporation X has $5m in profits, it has a choice - it can spend some or all of that money to expand (hiring new employees, opening new offices, buying stuff; either immediately or based on a plan for future growth); or it can issue dividends with some or all of that money.

But every dollar issued in dividends is one less dollar that can be reinvested in the business.

Arizona definitely: Georgia maybe: depends on who gets appointed to Isakson’s seat (and who has to stand in the General next year to keep the seat til 2022). Purdue is also up, so there is a chance for at least one pickup (IMO - and given the right candidate).

AZ is a better chance for Dems, I think: Martha McSally (another placeholder) is likely to face ex-astronaut Mark Kelly (Gabby Giffords’ husband) - don’t know enough about the race to opine. Yet.

Meanwhile in the “see it before climate change makes it go away” category of news: Venice.

Dramatic photos and video captured in Venice this week show rain-booted tourists and residents wading through the flooded streets and alleyways of the Italian city. Some said they’d been forced to essentially swim through the City of Canals after it was inundated by the highest tide Venice has seen in more than 50 years.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who said he would declare a state of disaster over the flooding, blamed climate change for the “devastating” acqua alta, or high waters, which peaked at over 6 feet on Tuesday night.

Arizona is truly in play. McSally lost to Sinema who she should have had a tremendous advantage over and the pluses that McSally brings, Military cred, being in the bag for Trump and his immigration stands are cancelled by Kelly with him being an astronaut and his wife’s history on immigration. There’s still the Giffords sympathy fully in play here with her common sense approach to gun legislation and regulation. Kelly has already out-raised McSally (at my last check) and her last political run painting Sinema as a stone cold kook really turned people off and she will have absolutely zero leverage doing said same with Kelly.

He can take her and all signs point to that happening as the state elected as Dem Sec of State in 2018, so much fewer coordinated opportunities for electoral shenanigans…

President Trump said he knows nothing about an alleged July 26 phone call with EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland in which he is reported to have asked about the status of Ukrainian investigations he sought into the Bidens and the 2016 election, Axios reports.

Said Trump: “I know nothing about that. First time I’ve heard it. The one thing I’ve seen that Sondland said is that he did speak with me with for a brief moment and I said “no quid pro quo under any circumstances.” And that’s true. But I’ve never heard this. In any event, it is more secondhand information, but I’ve never heard it.”

Forget that he’s lying in general . We know that.

The excesses of corporations isn’t so much the money aspect as it is the rise of shareholder primacy among publicly traded business management types.

True though with a sole prop you can try and go after the individual

Only partially. Texas tried to build a rail from Dallas to Houston and people were not going to cough up their money, their land, or their cars.

That’s been the issue here in California as well. I kind of laugh when I see things like an article on HuffPo a couple weeks ago about how Democrats need to start talking about cars and how we need to move away from them. My first thought was, “oh, so you want to put California in play again?”

Well that sucks. The wife and I have been kicking around doing an Amtrak trip across the US. Or at least Pittsburgh to Denver to see our daughter.

That would be a beautiful journey. I’ve had this crazy idea about taking one from Washington to LA. I’ve been to California twice but never further south of Santa Cruz and LA would be another baseball stadium destination. Plus some cool music venues too.I was going to do a weekend trip to New York after Thanksgiving since a band I like was playing but the singer got laryngitis so that plan fell through. I haven’t done NYC as a tourist since I was a kid. I’ve been several times since then since I have friends in the city.

Yeah, but a sole proprietor can declare bankruptcy and the creditors are screwed. With closely held corporations and LLCs you can try and pierce the corporate veil if there’s evidence of malfeasance. But most individuals running small businesses aren’t going to be able to afford a multi-million dollar judgment. Hell, most probably wouldn’t be able to afford one in the high six figures.

Yeah that’s way out of my range. If I were ever to do that, I think I would probably start out in Petersburg and then go to Moscow from there and then begin the trip. I actually came very close to going ot Russia in 2008 but no one else signed up for the trip at my community college so I went to Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Austria instead. I enjoyed that but the Russia trip would have been with one of my favorite professors who sparked my interest in the Cold War and international relations.

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the Turks have been spying on Russia (and Ukraine) for centuries and they would obviously have some very deeply placed assets. As best I can recall, the plague was (and still is) hosted in various species of ground-dwelling rodents, but can easily spread (via fleas) to rats, which can then spread the infection to humans. Researchers agree, I think, that rats may have been the main vector for the initial outbreak of the Black Death in Europe in the 1340s, though the epidemiological models aren’t 100% clear.

I used to think that Republicans didn’t believe what they said. And that might have been true for Boehner, Lott, and Bush 1. There’s a lot about Ben Shapiro that shows me that he’s not as smart as he thinks he is. He may not be Charlie Kirk or Jacob Wohl stupid but he is what he is, a mediocre mind that looks somewhat smart because of the company he keeps.

Yet.

There is a LOT of resentment here that Martha McSally was appointed and not elected. A LOT of resentment. Then again, there are the Republicans like Kelli “John McCain Should Resign So I Can Be Appointed To His Seat” Ward who are complete and utter boxes of rocks. And Ward is the current head of the AZ GOP. It’s going to be weird, folks.

Let’s try a pic of a dream car to test the image library :D

There is no meaningful difference between Fox News, the GOP, Infowars or QAnon.

8:58 PM - Nov 13, 2019

True that. My brother regularly spouts QAnon conspiracies but claims he knows nothing of QAnon or Alex Jones — it comes down to standard GOP sources propagate these messages throughout the Internet and online newsletters. Anyone tuned into the GOP assimilates these stories and tries to persuade anyone nearby of their merits.

Am still waiting for Hillary and Obama and Comey to be arrested for their crimes against Trump. Going to happen any day now. Barr is on the case. ///

I have family members STILL expecting Obama, Hillary and Biden to be arrested for treason and molesting kids…

I can’t do a Cenk/Chernobylvitch campaign.

Sober.

I can do one with many stiff drinks.

You think you’d have it bad, but I’d have to vote in it.

I fucking hate this timeline so much.

re: #263 fern01

Trump & sycophants all have memory issues.

My thinking on this has changed dramatically in the last several weeks. I don’t believe they have memory issues, though they may attempt keeping track of their lies somewhat. This is similar to wondering if Trumpers believe Trump is truthful or not. It’s the wrong question to ask.

It doesn’t matter. The goal is to spout so much BS from all angles and such vigor that it completely mucks up any reconciliation of objective truth and reason. The goal is to destroy objective truth and reason, not reconcile with it.

I heard/saw something today that that stated TrumpCult has posited 17 diff excuses/reasons/stories in dealing with Ukraine. This is throwing shit up on the wall and seeing whatever sticks, then throwing it on the other wall, then the ceiling, then the floor. The goal is to throw up so much shit that it creates an immense amount of work for people resisting it. And for those that don’t resist it, become disheartened or throw their hands in the air and say fuck it.

The best way, not the easiest, is to put on our waders and raincoats, and help others put on the waders and raincoats. Objective truth and reason is important but thinking we can just deal some out and it will defeat the torrent of bullshit is inverse to the reality. More objective truth and reason will not win, because it is a finite thing, whereas bullshit is infinite and not with any limitation.

We need to inoculate ourselves against bullshit on a mass scale. We have our work cut out for us.
