It will be interesting to see which World leaders show up.
Or, more interesting, which don’t.

In the meantime, 12 degrees F (-11 degrees C) here in the wild north country… which, believe it or not, is rather on the warm side for this time of year.

And I will beat this horse again: if Trump were half the builder of big projects he claims to be, then he would have convened a planning commission to produce engineering & environmental reports, design and engineering studies, legal impact statements and of course, a proposed budget and timetable.

Yet again, nobody is taking him to task for his chaotic approach.

HS classmate just IM’d me via Facebook that another 2 classmates from High School passed away. One from heroin OD and another from fentanyl. Of course that had to be published in the local paper.

365 graduated in May of 1973 from Ambridge High School. Now only 49 are still alive…

Those are nightmare statistics. Based on a typical population — without any extraordinary exposure to conflict or natural disaster — over 70% of that population should still be alive; i.e. there should be over 255 survivors, and not only 49.

That is so sad. And those populations have significantly higher mortality. So the portrait of the Knapp family discussed here yesterday reflects the lives of your classmates who did not escape to healthier communities. This is the nightmare world of the Russians, whose life expectancy gives them 3rd world status — actually most of the third world is doing better than Russia.

So, here’s something you’re not likely to see anywhere but on YouTube: It’s a Kenyan documentary from the early 1970s called The Black Man’s Land Trilogy.

Black Man’s Land: Images of Colonialism and Independence in Kenya; White Man’s Country ep 1 of 3

Black Man’s Land: Images of Colonialism and Independence in Kenya; Mau Mau Crisis ep 2 Of 3

Black Man’s Land: Images of Colonialism and Independence in Kenya; Kenyatta ep 3 of 3

Apparently, it’s still used in African studies programs…..that’s some staying power, I gotta say.

It’s three chapters: Part 1 is White Man’s Country, Part 2 is Mau Mau, and Part 3 is Kenyatta.

Genuinely fascinating and something you’d almost certainly never see on American television.

I looked it up and apparently, it was shown on American TV, but so long ago it’s now almost entirely forgotten.

Here’s an excerpt from an April 1979 review by John J. O’Connor of the New York Times:

“Black Man’s Land” succeeds extremely well on several levels. Simply by providing breathtaking airplane shots the land, it demolishes misconceptions of Africa as a mass of tangled jungle. And by affording a forum for black leaders, past and present, it conveys the sense of an enduring dignity that no colonialist rationalizations can eliminate. The series is being presented by KOCE‐TV, a UHF facility in Huntington Beach, Calif. The station merits enthusiastic applause for both its recognition and support of such an important project

Looks like it is open season on Iranians in Iraq.

High-level Popular Mobilization Forces leader Taleb Abbas Ali al-Saedi was shot dead late on Saturday in Karbala, a city about 62 miles southwest of Baghdad.

Local media reported that al-Saedi was ‘assassinated’ by unknown gunmen, but no further details about the shooters were immediately available.

Al-Saedi was the commander of the Karbala Brigades, a unit within the Iran-backed Shiite PMF umbrella group.

What we’ve discovered during this administration is that laws and precedents only matter if the institutions expected to enforce them do their jobs. When the courts and Congress choose to sit back and allow the Executive to do whatever it likes, any assurances that something Trump wishes to do will fall flat are pointless because he’ll be able to do it until told he can’t. So yes, I could totally see Bolton mumbling that Trump asserting “executive privilege” means he’s barred from providing testimony “until the courts rule.”

My heart goes out to those who suffered damage in Alabama. Speaking of Alabama, my wife and I saw Just Mercy today. We went because we were alerted to Bryan Stevenson’s work (should have known, I guess) by his interview with Preet Bharara last year. The movie was very well done. One note: a judge presiding over an appeal for a retrial based on massive evidence of wrong-doing by the sheriff, Tom Tate—including the sole witness recanting his coerced false statement against Walter “Johnnie D” McMillian—was made to look almost exactly like Jeff Sessions.* Could be a coincidence; I don’t know what the real judge looked like. But I doubt it. Anyway, rat bastard Tom Tate was re-elected six times and only retired last year when his use of an Alabama law that let’s sheriffs keep money not spent on prisoners’ meals revealed that he, like other Alabama sheriffs, had pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars.

*Forgot to add that the judge refused a retrial.

Another note about Just Mercy is that it doesn’t beat you over the head with the irony that Monroeville’s claim to fame is that it was the home of Harper Lee. There are just a couple of scenes where the Stevenson character is told as a newcomer that he should really go see the Mockingbird museum. Here is the real Stevenson from his memoir that I’m stealing from a local blogger:

“Monroeville, Alabama, celebrated its native daughter Lee shamelessly after her award-winning book became a national bestseller in the 1960s. … Her reclusiveness proved no barrier to the county’s continued efforts to market her literary classic — or to market itself by using the book’s celebrity …

“Sentimentality about Lee’s story grew even as the harder truths of the book took no root. The story of an innocent black man bravely defended by a white lawyer in the 1930s fascinated millions of readers, despite its uncomfortable exploration of false accusations of rape involving a white woman …

“Today, dozens of legal organizations hand out awards in the fictional lawyer’s name (Atticus Finch) to celebrate the model of advocacy described in Lee’s novel. What is often overlooked is Atticus did not successfully defend the black man falsely accused in the story. Tom Robinson, the wrongly accused black defendant, is found guilty,” Stevenson pointed out.

I just finished this blog post by “Bitter Southerner” and I highly recommend it. It includes lots that bring issues to 2020.

took just a week to uncover this

United States troops at the Al-Asad air base in Iraq were aware that an Iranian attack was imminent, allowing them to take shelter two-and-a-half-hours before missiles struck on Wednesday, CNN reports

and wtf
if this was clearly ‘staged’, as it seems to be how did they not ground hold all comml air traffic?

So Iran gave the US a few hours warning - and then fairly precisely hit a barracks building that they knew/guessed would be evacuated?

Pretty much. Iran gave Trump a way out and a way for them to save face.

Jeez: Rudy and his pals are still trying to flog the MEK as some sort of viable “opposition” to the Iranian regime? That article is right, one really has to wonder who is financing them (and I’m guessing it ISN’T “George Soros” for once)?

The left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing is a persistent organizational problem within authoritarian regimes mostly because of paranoia and factional infighting.
