On some of the amateur ones, the dishes they make are actually dangerous to the point where the judges will explicitly tell them, “We’re sorry, but we literally cannot eat this.”

I started reading “The Testaments” Margaret Atwood’s sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It incorporates events that occur in the TV series as well as the first novel (which was covered in Season 1).

I’m not fully caught up on Season 3 episodes.

Hello O Lizardim! I am currently about three days and seven threads behind, so there is a whole lotta news I still need to catch up on, sympathies and comments that have taken much too long to offer. Another three days with family here, then I might have a chance to reach the end of a current thread again.

But would like to shriek a quick “Help!” if I may, addressed to the many photographers here. I am currently trying to catalog my mother’s photo-related equipment, with an eye to selling or donating to someone who will be interested, and knows what the heck some of this is. Didn’t inherit the photographer gene, so would be grateful for any clues on what might still be useful, what is merely historic, and what is neither. Also suggestions if you know of dealers/camera clubs/museums that might be interested. (I’m in Denver Metro)

Notes below on what we’ve found so far. Probably nothing older than the 60’s, though there’s a Brownie camera around here somewhere.
— Seven cameras: Yashica Mat-124 for 120 film, 35mm Minolta SRT101 & Pentax ME Super plus a little Samsung point-and-shoot. The Minolta currently has a long Vivitar lens, so the shorter spare Minolta lens I found may belong to it. Two Super8 movie cameras, GAF Anscomatic & Kodak XL55. (Also a digital Olympus E-410 — keeping the camera for now, may not need both of the lenses in the bag.)
— One enlarger that may or may not be complete, with the stand and two Wollensak ‘raptars’ on mounting plates.
— An antique View-Master projector that looks like it’s made out of bakelite. A vintage Honeywell slide projector that could be as late as the 70’s. An out-of-date Disney/Lexmark photo printer from the Windows Xp era, 2007ish. Assorted miscellany, about some of which I am totally clueless.

(Cheap or even free for fellow Lizards. Can give details on lenses, which may be the most useful things in the collection.)

yours from the trenches, CluelessToad

I don’t know what the monetary value is — not that much, from the blind googling I’ve done so far. But it’s stuff she loved and history someone may be interested in. The challenge is connecting the history and the historian.

I can tell you a little bit about the Yashica. My late dad used it as portrait camera. One has to get used to taking a picture upside down and he was able to use a tripwire with it. I think he was also able to use it on a tripod. And the negatives came two for each portrait. That is about all I remember about it.

Cool! Mom took a lot of her scenery slides with it; may have used it for family shots as well. Will have to ask my genealogist sister, who is taking most of the negatives and prints to scan and sort.

That was the one camera I did not learn how to use from my late dad. I learned how to use his Konica S2 Rangefinder. As I said the negatives from the Yashica are doubles. I think they are also called duplexes.

I remember Heidi Klum on a talk show explaining why Project Runway is so much better than cooking competitions:

“When the judges are talking about how the food smells, how it tastes, the texture… the viewer doesn’t experience any of that. You don’t know if the judges are saying something you might agree with, you can’t learn anything from them. Project Runway, we’re judging them on what their entry looks like. And you can see very clearly what it looks like. Everything they say about it makes sense.”

I gathered together all the film camera stuff I had (2 Canon with some extra lenses, some old film, cases, etc.) and eventually found an art teaching group in north Philadelphia that used film still for art projects and took old cameras and equipment to at the minimum use with classes that were being taught. So I donated all of it to them.

So you might web search a bit and see if there is something like that around Denver.

Memories of the Polaroid SX-70 I got as a graduation present in 1973. Beautiful piece of work that took wonderful shots until Polaroid stopped making the film around 20 years ago. It laid dormant until I saw that they’ve started making the film packs again. So I bought a couple film packs hoping the old workhorse still had some life but the rollers no longer work…

I imagine this will become a behind-the-scenes talking point for the wingnuts in the near future, especially now that we’re in an election year. Either a behind-the-scenes talking point, or, given the nature of the Trumpites, the source of a very loud and very public freakout.

pbs.org

Demographers project that whites will become a minority in the U.S. in around 2045, dropping below 50% of the population. That’s a quarter-century from now - still a long way away, right? Not if you focus on children. White children right now are on the eve of becoming a numerical minority. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that, by the middle of 2020, nonwhites will account for the majority of the nation’s 74 million children.

- Children in 2018: The share of the U.S. non-Hispanic white population has fallen since the mid-20th century. Between 2010 and 2018, the number of white children fell by 2.8 million, or 7.1%. In contrast, nonwhite children grew by 6.1%. In 2018, the last year for which data are currently available, the proportion of people in the U.S. under 18 years of age was just barely more white than nonwhite. However, children under 11 were more nonwhite than white.

In almost one-third of U.S. states, nonwhite children outnumber all white children under 18 in 14 states - including Nevada, Hawaii, Georgia and Maryland - plus the District of Columbia. Nonwhite children currently outnumber white children ages 0 to 4 in these 15 states and in Louisiana. In the next few years, the same will be true in North Carolina, Illinois and Virginia, followed a little later by Connecticut and Oklahoma.

In the coming decades, the percentage of all white children will drop - from 49.8% in 2020 to 36.4% in 2060.

86
Dread Pirate  Jan 12, 2020 • 2:30:16am

Whites are already a minority. Brown eyed “whites” are not white, but I’m not racist. My wife and one of my daughters have brown eyes. I’m to too sure if blue eyed people are white either, just us green-eyed devils.

how many stand-alone news articles did you see this week in the sniffing, wheezing, slurring from Trumps Iran adders?

Trump is a media star. Our press has a vested commercial interest in keeping him on display as long as possible.

re: #31 CleverToad

Can give details on lenses, which may be the most useful things in the collection.)

yours from the trenches, CluelessToad

the minolta srt 101 was the camera my Dad brought back from Vietnam in 68. As far as I know, they’re not worth much if anything. Nor are any of the kit lenses (I believe the standard lens they came with was actually a 55mm, rather than the typical 50mm, and I have no idea why). I wanna say that Vivitar was a Sears production, but it’s entirely possible I’m misremembering that. People do still shoot film, but not very much anymore, as digital resolution now vastly surpasses film resolution, and unless you live in a city with several million people, your chances of finding someone who develops it is slim to none.

Whites are and will remain the largest single ethic group by a long shot.

re: #78 BigPapa

Right now, Iran is a tinderbox internally. As some of you know, there are protests mostly around the anger that Iranians feel towards the gov after they admitted IRGC shot down the Ukraine Airlines aircraft

The protests here don’t have anything to do with the US and never have, and weren’t going to simply go away because of the assassination of Soleimani. The Iranian protesters are pissed that the government lied to them again and killed a planeload of Iranians and Iranian-Canadians through deadly incompetence.

Also, probably the best thing for the US to say about these protests is nothing. The government would love to smear the protesters as US-backed traitors.

I imagine this [demographic news] will become a behind-the-scenes talking point for the wingnuts in the near future, especially now that we’re in an election year. Either a behind-the-scenes talking point, or, given the nature of the Trumpites, the source of a very loud and very public freakout.

pbs.org

My guess is that the freakout - which (and you heard it here first!) is likely to be figleafed by The Serious Punditocracy as something like “cultural anxiety” - is going to publicly muted (overt racism still, thankfully, doesn’t “play” well in political discourse. So far.), but still be pretty pervasive on the starboard side of the electorate.

Yes, “Whites” (however defined) are still going to be the plurality ethnic group in this country, but America’s core culture has been defined - from the beginning - with quite definite ethno/racial notions of who is the “majority” and who is a “minority”: and those notions have formed (and ruled) our sociopolitcal structure for a couple of centuries now. And unlike the demographics, said attitudes are unlikely to change easily (if at all).

Iran’s sole female Olympic medalist says she’s defected

(CNN)Iran’s sole female Olympic medalist Kimia Alizadeh announced that she has permanently left her country for Europe.

“Let me start with a greeting, a farewell or condolences,” the 21-year—old wrote in an Instagram post explaining why she was defecting. “I am one of the millions of oppressed women in Iran who they have been playing with for years.”
Alizadeh became the first Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal after claiming taekwondo bronze in the -57kg category during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Affectionately known in Iran as “The Tsunami,” Alizadeh announced she was leaving her birth country with searing criticism the regime in Tehran.

The emergency alert sent to the residents of Ontario by Ontario government on Monday morning was sent in “error”, Pickering Fire Chief John Hagg said.

Ontario Power Generation tweeted, “the alert regarding #Pickering Nuclear was sent in error. There is no danger to the public or environment.”

Early Sunday morning, the province had sent out an emergency alert after an unspecified incident at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station was reported, but said that there’s been no “abnormal release of radioactivity.”

“People near the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station DO NOT need to take any protection actions at this time,” the alert read.

Why should I have the stigma of Impeachment attached to my name when I did NOTHING wrong? Read the Transcripts! A totally partisan Hoax, never happened before. House Republicans voted 195-0, with three Dems voting with the Republicans. Very unfair to tens of millions of voters!

and it’s not like his personal lawyer, security adviser, campaign chairman, etc., did anything wrong, it’s not like he is an unnamed co-conspirator in a criminal case, it’s not like he paid out multi-million settlements for fraud cases involving his charity and university…

and besides, her e-mails!

I have no hard and fast opinions, but I will note that the huge greenhouse growers in the Netherlands and elsewhere like them. Purple paint? The purple is from LEDs that are tuned for that frequency.

LED? Yes that would be right of course. The old tubes were my thought above. Some we bought back when had drip lines from the paint. I just have the idea including the rest of the frequencies is just as good for the plants. Cannabis growers seem to be split too. Except they tweak color for flower growth in some cases.
I once looked at using gels on good bright cheap daylight bulbs, but the dye just kills the lumens.

Eastwood should make one last western epic before his time is up and have these guys do the soundtrack.

re: #98 Shropshire Slasher

My Sunday morning yelling at the idiot box. Why is CBS Sunday Morning celebrating Carlos Ghosn?! The guy is a coward.

I’m going to disagree with that. He was in a very bad place. Once you get indicted in Japan, the odds are nearly certain that you will be convicted. (Seriously, a 99.4% conviction rate?) There’s also evidence that political machinations were at work. I am NOT saying that Ghosn is as pure as the driven snow. He’s not. I’m sure he broke some laws. But the Japanese legal system and the particular conditions of Ghosn’s bail were, IMHO, completely unacceptable. Not permitted to talk to his wife? Hello, that’s just deliberate cruelty.

I am of mixed emotions regarding his escape from Japan. I understand why he did it, but I don’t know that it helped in the long run.

That said, the January sumo tournament started today and two of my favorite rikishi (Hakuho, the GOAT of sumo and Enho) won.

Yes, my mother owned a Nissan for many, many years, and it was a wonderful, sound car. Probably before his time, but no one person is going to destroy a good company.

I think my favorite bit is “become extremely educated.” Making me think of going back to school, maybe get me my doctorate in CS. (Conspiralunacy Science, of course.)

Kinda-sorta agree: from what I’ve read about the Ghosn case, it looks like he IS technically “guilty” of some of those charges, i.e. that he siphoned off “unacceptable” amounts of corporate money for “personal enrichment”; but it also does seem like those charges are pretty much (IMO) a blind - that his real “crimes” are:

1. Being a foreigner in Japan; compounded by:
2. Being a foreigner in Japan who turned around/saved a major industrial conglomerate; compounded by:
3. Being a foreigner in Japan who turned around/saved a major industrial conglomerate by stepping on too many corporate toes.

and yes, I think there’s also 4. Spotlighting the inherent flaws of the Japanese “Justice” system. No surprise that he bolted.

One can be ‘extremely educated’ and still be dumb especially if one is reading mostly BS.

re: #61 Eclectic Cyborg

OFFS. “Damn” has been allowed to be in TV and film for almost 80 years now.

I recently saw a restored version of the 1958 BBC serial “Quatermass and the Pit”, and was quite struck by how an evening drama of it’s time was so casual in its usage of words like “damn” and “hell”.

Fast forward half a century, and you have Doctor Who under showrunner Russell T. Davis, and seemingly in each episode there’s at least one line where someone’s asking “what the HELL is going on”, and, although I love RTDs era of Who, it almost seems quaint and forced by comparison.
