VIDEO: A Surprising Development for Once: Mitt Romney Says He’ll Vote to Convict Trump

Politics • Views: 22,699

YouTube

It’s been a long time since a Republican surprised me, but Mitt Romney did it today. Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t make me a fan. Romney is independently wealthy and his Senate seat is pretty safe, so he doesn’t face the same kind of political pressure from the Trump cult that many GOP senators do.

It won’t affect the outcome. The complicit GOP is still going to acquit their crime boss. And even though it technically means the impeachment process was not “partisan,” I don’t expect the GOP to stop insisting it was.

But still, I didn’t expect him to do the right thing, so I have to say good for Mitt Romney, just this one time.

Same. First ever to vote for the removal of his president in their party. It also really is going to make certain talking points harder to get away with it and we both know Trump is furious.

I don’t think it was some triple-bank political calculation by Romney. I think he honestly believes he swore an oath, and he’s already eaten all the shit from that traitor criminal that he’s going to eat.

I wonder how Romney would’ve voted if he was up for election this year, but he will be remembered for doing the right thing. And I’ll give him credit; if he still harbored any hope of becoming President, he shut the door on any possibility of that permanently today.

That’s the brilliant part. Nancy can go “ Well you see how he acts.” It didn’t even take Trump Jr a hour.

I’ve been wondering how long the made-in-hell alliance of Mormon and Evangelical conservatives would last, considering that the latter regard Mormons as hell-bound heretics who baptize dead people and refuse to smoke cigars.

Mormons also aren’t as xenophobic about immigrants which is why it was annoying to see candidate Mitt pander to that

yes, it takes a certain amount of courage to buck your party - especially this party and at this time given its cult-like nature. after all you didn’t take an oath to him, did you? or did you?

so yeah mitt gets some props for that.

however

it shouldnt take some extra kind of deep reserve courage worthy of special recognition to do what you promised to do when you took the oath of your office and/or the additional oath to act in judgement of an impeachment.

it’s what you agreed to do
you dont get bonus points for doing what you agreed to do
and if you cant then you damn well dont take the oath. or you quit.

if you end up not doing what you agreed to, even knowing the specific sort of challenges that would be ahead in the execution of your office, that’s just cowardice or corruption

i dont want to split this hair too fine because i think we agree

we give awards and medals for good works, exemplary lives, challenges overcome.
not merely because someone never became a criminal
(limbaugh notwithstanding)

and the challenges in soldiering are an entirely different animal than those for sitting in congress

honors certainly for what you do and how you do it.
what you face and how you confront it.

not merely for adhering to your oath.
because i find that a low standard. especially in the case of this senate that cant even manage to do that.

While Mitt will be the subject of the most public rage from Cheeto, the guy who can expect to hear the most screaming behind closed doors is Mitch. After all, he was supposed to deliver an “acquittal” vote from the entire caucus (and possible a Dem or two) today. It was supposed to be Donny’s big triumph, that he’d managed to not only defeat the “partisan” attack by the Dems, but do so with entire party united in support of his greatness. Now Mitt’s gone and shattered that dream, which means Mitch has failed his Don yet again.

Trump’s cult hasn’t grown since 2016. Therefore they are not the danger in 2020.

The danger in 2020 is that the D base is prone to get moody about doing their civic duty, and swing voters are intrinsically meatheads, equally able to vote for and against fascism for the pettiest of reasons.

It’s Donald fucking Trump over country. They could get their tax cuts and judges from Pence. I know, Trump controls their base, but I don’t think he has an unbreakable hold on those fucking morons. They could paint Trump as a failed businessman or even worse - a Democrat. They’ve had decades of smearing their perceived enemies. No, they want Trump because deep down in places they don’t talk about at parties they’re exactly like him. He allows them to finally say the quiet parts out loud, and they’re like pigs in shit.

And if you told me this morning that Mitt would give me a little relief from the onslaught of fascism today, I wouldn’t have believed you.

I’m more optimistic than you are on that front I concede but I think we both can agree that we’ve got nine months to go so nothing is certain. I’m just happy that he can’t act like it was a total witchhunt/hoax or whatever he wants to call it. Now he’s going to spin it either way but it’s nice that particular detail is against him.

The caucus system is totally broken and there’s little reason to believe that it’s an indicator for anything other than how awful caucuses are. What people need to focus on is the GOTV in the primaries and the general election, and registering new voters.

What demographic group didn’t vote for Trump in 2016 that is going to in 2020? And how many of his primary supporters (old white men) have died in the last four years? He won with basically the narrowest possible margin in 2016. Not that everyone can assume it’s in the bag and go lie on the beach, but it’s the farthest thing from hopeless.

Also, I give more than even odds that Trump is either drooling in a hospital pillow or tucked away in a box by November, so there’s that.

Ayeah, consider how he’s spent weeks boasting that not a single Republican in the House voted to impeach him and there were Democrats who even voted against it. That was what he expected to do after today, go around boasting that he’d sailed through the entire way without a single defection and thus the entire thing had been “partisan” from start to finish. It’s not going to stop him from claiming that the whole thing was “partisan,” but after today it certainly stops him from insisting that not a single Republican voted against him.

New York Times: “When all the partisan posturing, parliamentary wrangling and legalistic arguing are stripped away, the impeachment process that dominated Washington for months produced a set of facts that is largely beyond dispute: The president of the United States pressured a foreign government to take actions aimed at his political opponents.”

“As the Senate moved toward acquitting President Trump on Wednesday, even some Republicans stopped trying to defend his actions or dispute the evidence, focusing instead on the idea that his conduct did not deserve removal from office, especially in an election year.”

the constitution doesnt say no impeachment in the last year of a term.
are you saying if he did this earlier you’d have booted him? no you’d have found another twisted rationale

so heres the problem with this idiotic kind of vote logic
he is impeached. in the last year of his term
everyone knows he did it - many of you admit it
but you wont remove him because it’s an election year or some other nonsense

because you wont convict, you are stuck with this as more or less ‘precedent’

this ludicrous reasoning to acquit is giving full cover and actually enshrining the specific and admitted bad (illegal) behavior as allowable in the future

- the abuse of power
- the obstruction of congress

congratulations

I don’t consider it an “acquital.” When the jury in a criminal trial stands at 7-5 in favor of acquittal and there is no way to change the outcome, the best the defense can expect at that point is for the judge to rule a mistrial and the prosecution to choose not to retry the case before a new jury. Any judge who tried to rule that an “acquittal” would have his ass before an ethics board in a New York minute.

Haven’t checked either Twitter or the news to confirm it yet, but one of my friends says she’ll never log in again because her TL would be flooded with Bernie-or-Bust leftists.

In particular, one of the folks she’d thought was balanced; just a few minutes ago RT’d a tweet that recapped that the DNC is assuming direct oversight of vote tabulation in all remaining primaries and caucuses because of the disaster in Iowa, and added a photo-meme captioned “holy shit, they’re actually rigging it”.

Which incidentally means that we’ll lose even more Sandernista votes by nominating anyone who isn’t Bernie this year than in ‘16, while I still remain convinced he’ll pull a McGovern if he is nominated due the the justified fear that since the majority of his supporters are Leninists, he might be one.

Mitt did something significant today, something that is only going to hurt his vulnerable colleagues: He not only acknowledged that Trump broke the law, he voted to convict him for doing so. And the flying monkeys are showing him not a bit of mercy because he only voted on that count.

So Susan, Cory, Joni, take note: You’re fucked no matter how you slice it. You voted to “acquit,” so not matter how you spin it, nobody is going to buy how “troubled” you were by Donny’s actions. And any acknowledgment that the call was less than “perfect,” even if you declare it wasn’t worth impeaching, is gonna lead to you being savaged by hordes of rabid MAGAts.

The cherry on top? Donny doesn’t reward loyalty because he expects it to be unconditional. He thinks you work for him, rather than you both working for the American voters. So if you’re hoping he’s gonna help you get over the finish line, then there’s a bridge for sale in NY that I’m giving away for cheap.

He tried in vain to convince me that same Republicans would work with Democrats to hold Trump in check.

As I tried to tell him then, it wasn’t a matter of me believing a Republican president to be like unto a king, but rather the Republicans believed so.

re: #243 Chrysicat

I just want to die now…

Sanders has stated publicly that he will vote for the Democratic candidate, because that’s better than DT. Who knows whether his rabid followers will do it.

Perhaps I am alone in this, but I am getting angry that the insane news cycle we are living in is in danger of letting the Iowa Democratic Party off the hook.

I continue to believe there is s strong connection between the electoral process being turned into a reality TV show and the fact we have a sociopathic reality game show host with a fake orange tan as POTUS.

For me:

(A) Caucuses must be eliminated from the process completely.

(B) Iowa loses “first in nation” status forever. Let’s break the continuous 48 states into groups by size (sorry folks in AK & HI, but it is simply too prohibitively expensive for non-billionaires to be campaigning for months in your states) and randomly draw a comparable state (in the 2-4 million kind of range) to begin with. Then there is at least a CHANCE the first state will represent the country better than Iowa and New Hampshire.

(C) The people responsible for this debacle need to be sent looking for work outside of politics.

Anything less than the above is fucking bullshit IMO.

Storyline Fever

On occasion, we all do battle with motivational paralysis
Unable to perform some simple task
Trapped at the stage of analysis
Thoughts of the shortness of life may beget
Bouts of shortness of breath in your chest
Doubts about the worth of the nights you got left
Crowding out all the fear and regret
You got storyline fever, storyline flu
It’s filtering how everything looks to you
Don’t you reckon it’s affecting your attitude?
Storyline fever got its hooks in you
Storyline fever got its hooks in you
You took your love to the marketplace
In the wanting corner of a Western state
Where every other shopper is a basket case
Just relies on the horizon, forms a frowning face
Hanging around those haunts at night
Where half the clientele was part poltergeist
Grinding an axe against all that exists
Minus their protected exceptions to it
You got storyline fever, storyline flu
Apparently impairing your point of view
It’s making horseshit sound true to you
Now it’s impacting how you’re acting too
Now it’s impacting how you’re acting too
Got a comb over cut circa Abscam sting
Make a better Larry than Lizard King
But you got to find a way to make it work
‘Cause your feet is where your demons lurk
When you’re seller and commodity
You gotta sell yourself immodestly
Turn your pedestal into a carving board
If that’s what the audience is starving for
You got storyline fever, storyline flu
You’re filtering how everything looks to you
Don’t you reckon it’s affecting your attitude?
Storyline fever got its hooks in you
Storyline fever got its hooks in you

Neither the DNC nor the Iowa Democratic party controls when Iowa goes on the calendar. That is controlled by the state government. So, for it to change, Democrats will have to gain control of the legislature and governor.

Similarly for the caucus vs primary. If the state doesn’t want to pay for a primary, the party will have to. And running a primary without the help of the state will be expensive.

Also, though, the Iowa caucus is 5/9 in determining the nominee, thus it’s useless at determining the top of the ticket. OTOH, it can weed out lower candidates.

It needs to change, but the state party doesn’t have as much power as people think.

What exactly did Trump “win”?

- The best one can argue about his approval rating is that it has rebounded to where it began last September, much like it did during the Clinton impeachment, but that still leaves him underwater and experiencing (at best) a dead-cat bounce. So the assertions that impeachment would make him more popular are shredded

- Despite all the assertions that he’d be better set to win reelection, he’s still trailing in most election projections. And all those projections assume the economy stays the same or experiences approval no greater than what has already happened. So if the economy tanks in the next 9 months, then he’s fucked.

- The predictions that impeachment would be wildly unpopular and he’d benefit from such? Nope, the best the Repubs have managed is polls showing impeach/removal within the margin of error, there has never been a point in the proceedings where people were as opposed as they were by the time the Clinton “trial” concluded.

- And the final indignity is that all of the above likely explains why he will be the only president in history to have a member of his own party vote for his conviction, while not a single member of the opposition party voted for “acquittal” like 10 Republicans did for Clinton. So while he’ll try to insist (despite the evidence) that the conviction vote was “partisan,” the one thing he can’t do without leading to laughter is insist that his “acquittal” was “bipartisan.”

Absolutely, he’s going to try again because A) he thinks Dems will shy away from further investigations/impeachment now that he’s “beat” them, B) knows that Senate Repubs won’t ever vote to convict him, and C) that the public will take his side if the Dems do try to impeach him again.

I said before: TEN FUCKING REPUBLICANS could have voted to convict and we still would have had acquittal by a significant margin. The outcome of this was never in doubt but because one guy voted against the party on one vote that in the end didn’t mean shit, he’s suddenly persona non grata.

My favorite was the supposedly libertarian and skeptical of too powerful government Rand Paul saying the name of the alleged WBer but then again I’ve always thought Rand and his father were both frauds when it came to liberties when push came to shove. Both of them have some rotten stuff in their closets.

If Trump shot someone on 5th Avenue, Rand Paul would harass anyone who called 911.

He still did a brave thing. It was nonetheless very much the wrong thing and if he had to acquit on one article, Article I would have been the better one for just the reason “Independent Justice” pointed out. He’s still making the President a king, since Congress can’t investigate any allegation.

i know this is an unpopular point of view
and it will be an uphill battle when it comes

nevertheless

what happened in the impeachment trial re article 2 may be a ‘precedent’

it is not a precedent and can (and probably will) be clawed back.

re: #365 Targetpractice

So while he’ll try to insist (despite the evidence) that the conviction vote was “partisan,” the one thing he can’t do without leading to laughter is insist that his “acquittal” was “bipartisan.”

post impeachment dead cat bounce is all

Ayeah, consider how he’s spent weeks boasting that not a single Republican in the House voted to impeach him and there were Democrats who even voted against it. That was what he expected to do after today, go around boasting that he’d sailed through the entire way without a single defection and thus the entire thing had been “partisan” from start to finish. It’s not going to stop him from claiming that the whole thing was “partisan,” but after today it certainly stops him from insisting that not a single Republican voted against him.

I wouldn’t bet on it. I’ve already seen a tweet from her basically condemning him to hell for doing that. OTOH, it’s a very good thing for Mitt that the king will probably be dead by 2024 because if Trump’s alive, he’ll bankroll multiple primary challengers.

And that’s assuming that he doesn’t have the party reworked in such a way that it’s illegal to declare oneself a Republican without a membership card and then deny one to Mitt.

Mitt did the bravest thing he ever has in his life. And it’s likely to cost him his extended family.

Trump wouldn’t personally bankroll *any* of them. It’s not how the grift works.

He’d simply voice approval for anyone else using *their* money to do it.

My limit just now was when he started saying Pelosi wasn’t smart ripping up the speech, that getting in the gutter with him “isn’t working for you!”

What worked for me was that she divided the speech in half and tore it up twice making sure that all of the sheets were aligned by thumping it on her desk while looking at Trump’s flanged wings of barely-there hair jutting from the back of his empty head.

But on the flip side could the whistleblower pee in Rand’s bourbon

Whether there is pee in Rand’s bourbon should be left up to the marketplace to decide. If he gets sick, it should be his choice whether he want’s to continue to buy that brand. There should be no law against it though because that would be tyranny. This rule only applies to libertarians.

Almost all Republicans now are dependent upon Trump’s deplorables in order to get re-elected.

Romney is one of the very few Republicans who doesn’t need them.

So this move by Romney, though on the surface is the high ground, was for him a rather low-priced stand.

Murkowski - remember in the last election she ran as an independent because one of the idiot Trumper types manipulate the AK GOP. She beat him and the Democrat. Maybe she feels she couldn’t pull off the same stunt twice.

I keep seeing that Trump was acquitted. But was he, really?

In criminal trials, the verdict of the jury must be unanimous, either to convict or acquit. If that bar isn’t reached, and the state opts not to retry, the defendant has not really been acquitted. He still has the benefit of the presumption of innocence in the law, but failure to convict is not the same as acquittal.

In impeachment trials, the threshold for conviction is 2/3. Shouldn’t that also be the threshold for acquittal?

Sure, if you don’t get 2/3, the accused isn’t convicted, but he’s not exonerated, either.

Sort of OT but not exactly: I just got three pieces of mail from our so-called president. All three pieces have my name spelled incorrectly. DT has truly pissed me off. Not only will he not get my vote but I am thinking of sending back said pieces of mail saying said person does not exist. I cannot think of anything else to do at the moment.

Damn damning

Sherrod Brown (D-OH): “In private, many of my colleagues agree that the president is reckless and unfit. They admit his lies. And they acknowledge what he did was wrong. They know this president has done things Richard Nixon never did. And they know that more damning evidence is likely to come out.”

“So watching the mental contortions they perform to justify their votes is painful to behold: They claim that calling witnesses would have meant a never-ending trial. They tell us they’ve made up their minds, so why would we need new evidence? They say to convict this president now would lead to the impeachment of every future president — as if every president will try to sell our national security to the highest bidder.”

“I have asked some of them, ‘If the Senate votes to acquit, what will you do to keep this president from getting worse?’ Their responses have been shrugs and sheepish looks.”

Profiles in courage

re: #334 Chrysicat

I wouldn’t bet on it. I’ve already seen a tweet from her basically condemning him to hell for doing that. OTOH, it’s a very good thing for Mitt that the king will probably be dead by 2024 because if Trump’s alive, he’ll bankroll multiple primary challengers.

And that’s assuming that he doesn’t have the party reworked in such a way that it’s illegal to declare oneself a Republican without a membership card and then deny one to Mitt.

Mitt did the bravest thing he ever has in his life. And it’s likely to cost him his extended family.

Trump bankrolls nothing - he will con someone into doing the bankrolling - it won’t be Donald.

My favorite was the supposedly libertarian and skeptical of too powerful government Rand Paul saying the name of the alleged WBer but then again I’ve always thought Rand and his father were both frauds when it came to liberties when push came to shove. Both of them have some rotten stuff in their closets.

I was in the Senate office buildings today and Rand Paul walked right by me and I said “Outing the whistleblower was shameful!” He didn’t respond. I’d like to mention that his Senate office is the ONLY one that keeps its door locked.
