I Would Prefer Not To  Apr 23, 2020 • 12:41:42pm

No I’m not dying. Getting better slowly. I just wanted to prepare for my eventual demise and have a lot of time on my hands. I decided to write what I want on my tombstone. I want people to know not who I was, but what I stood for, what I believed. i’m also hoping that kids will ask their parents and they will learn about the times we lived in and the evils we fought.

Here’s a preview.

Seriously though, that’s the wrong preview image for the article (if you look closer, they’re all coming out of a Walmart, and why would a European with dreaded “socialized healthcare” be wearing an “Access to Insulin is a Human Right” shirt?) The article itself shows this image instead.

True. If you want the legit story and a real (as opposed to stock) image, skip the Hillbait and read the BBC article they linked to instead (come to think of it, the woman actually getting the vaccine looks pretty happy too!)

“Will be allowed.” How many restaurants you figure will rush to open over the weekend to 50% capacity? There will be some, but the major chains are either going to remain closed or leave it up to their franchisees to decide with the understanding that they’ll be liable for any cases of CV-19 that can be traced back to their location.

Interesting bit of perspective here.

Canada is one of the most similar countries to the United States. They have roughly 10 percent of the population we do (37 million vs. 330 million). Thus, IF both countries were managing Covid-19 at similar levels you would expect our numbers to be somewhere around 10 times what the Canadian figures are.

However, to date Canada has reported around 42 500 cases. The United States? About 856 000.

Run the numbers and you’ll quickly discover our figures are about TWENTY times what the Canadian numbers are.

Why? There are many reasons but mainly because Canada was much quicker to shut things down early on in the outbreak, they have been much more aggressive with testing and they don’t have a for profit healthcare system.

And oh yeah, they actually have competent Federal leadership.

My prediction now is there will be an initial spike, perhaps for a few days or a week at the most. One that will get all sorts of news coverage about how the American people are so eager to go “back to normal” that they’re throwing caution to the wind and heading to all those businesses that had been closed for weeks.

And 90-95% of it will be pure astroturf, wingnuts rushing to buy up non-essentials or get their hair done for no other reason than to “stiggit” to liberals. While the media coverage will be driven by the pundits who bet the farm on Dems facing “dire consequences” for extending shelter-in-place orders in their own states.

Also, see: Walz, Tim, Governor (D-MN), who has said that our state needs to quadruple its level of testing to even consider reopening the state (putting the lie to “doing more testing than any governors ‘even want’”).

Evening Lizardim. 2204 new tests, a new high for us, brings us to new highs in other ways: 221 positives, up to 2721; and 21 deaths, up to an even 200. We’re going to see more of this in the days ahead, as the health care trifecta of State, Research, and Care (MDH, U of M, and Mayo) ramps up its test load. But I have faith that, when the testing regimen has been established, we will see how clearly Minnesota has bought time to survive the onslaught of this first wave and come out the other side.

When I came back into Canada they weren’t happy that I’d gone to the US even with the explanation of why - but it was all good.

I was told that, by law (which recently passed), I must self isolate for 14 days and if I break that self isolation it’s punishable by (I forgot how many) years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine. Had to give them my address, phone and email info. They’re going to check up on me. They take this shit seriously.

They don’t have to worry, I’m going nowhere. And hopefully that includes not dying.

Televangelist/scammer Jim Bakker is pulling out all the stops-send money now, checks only-because he might have to declare bankruptcy.

He first got into trouble by peddling a colloidal silver “cure” for the coronavirus. Missouri is suing him and NYAG Leticia James sent him a cease and desist. Then his credit card processor cut him off. Then AT&T, owner of DirecTV, sent a letter to the several networks who air Bakker, warning them vaguely of maybe not being in compliance with their contracts if they continued to air him.

Then this: kansascity.com

I’m thinking there is something serious going on behind the scenes because credit card processors really don’t like giving up that sweet, sweet 1.9 to 2.5 percent off the top of transactions. Unless, of course, the processor was getting a lot of chargebacks or some other shenanigans.

Up to 2.7 Million in New York May Have Been Infected, Antibody Study Finds

13.9% of people tested in a New York COVID-19 antibody study tested positive, meaning they had the virus, Cuomo says; that means up to 2.7 million people could have been infected statewide

This NY antibody study included many more positive (for antibody) people than the California studies. The studies in California, though Santa Clara did tests on roughly the same number of people, had far fewer antibody positives, thus false positives are more important in the statistics in California.

The upshot of the NY study is that, instead of a case fatality ratio of near 10%, the infection fatality ratio in the population is closer to 1%.

This is in accord with places that are doing much more dense testing of the active infections.

re: #76 Eclectic Cyborg

At this point I am convinced it’s possible to become infected with the virus and not necessarily be asymptomatic but not get sick to a level where you show major symptoms. I don’t know how else you explain those antibody findings.

Many people, if they are running a slight fever, may never notice it, especially when it’s cool and windy outside.

Same with an occasional cough. We just don’t think anything of it if we cough once or twice.

Or if we’re sleepy one morning and don’t want to get out of bed.

Repeating my concern about the California data: self-selection by volunteers combined with a few false-positives can inflate the anti-body positive results.

Not yet found any scientific data on the NY study. But when you’re looking at around 600 antibody-positives, a few false positives are not significant. The LA/USC study probably only had around 10 antibody-positive results (out of the roughly 680 tests overall), so a couple of false positives will make a significant change in the “adjusted” values.

That is common to basically any infectious agent. Many, if not most, people who get exposed will be asymptomatic. Not all agents are contagious while asymptomatic though.

Up to 2.7 Million in New York May Have Been Infected, Antibody Study Finds

This NY antibody study included many more positive (for antibody) people than the California studies. The studies in California, though Santa Clara did tests on roughly the same number of people, had far fewer antibody positives, thus false positives are more important in the statistics in California.

The upshot of the NY study is that, instead of a case fatality ratio of near 10%, the infection fatality ratio in the population is closer to 1%.

This is in accord with places that are doing much more dense testing of the active infections.

Now we can hope to figure out what kind of immunity, if any, is imparted after recovery.

Of the cases China tested, 80% of cases did not require hospitalization.

We have no idea what % of the population had it but never got tested because their symptoms were so mild as to not be noticeable or they were completely asymptomatic. The Diamond Princess data suggest that 10-15% of cases may be asymptomatic. There’s not a good handle on what % of cases are mild enough to pass unnoticed. There probably won’t be for a while.

My continuing question on this: How accurate is the antibody test NY used in detecting this particular coronavirus? How many false positives? Didn’t the NY Times article talk about problems with most of the tests that were being used in general (not necessarily the one(s) in New York)?

I know: my wife had two negative CV tests, both of which came back within a couple of hours, I had one that was reported back in 24 hrs: it’s not reassuring at all to find out that apparently
A) the quicker the test, the higher the likelihood of a false reading, and
B) even with the *best* tests, there is still a (relatively) high rate of false readings and
C) even those folks who know what they’re doing (I.e., not most Republicans) have had to admit they still don’t have a true- scientific - handle on how this pandemic is spreading.
Except, of course, that testing is vital and it still isn’t being done enough.
Fun times.

It was also because hemophiliacs started dying and the experts started realizing that the blood supply was contaminated. I know of women during that time who normally would have been given blood transfusions after a problematic delivery but instead the doctors thought it was too risky.

I’ve mentioned before how I shut down some co-workers who kept pestering me to have them as guests so they could swim in the pool at my apartment complex. I told them that one resident was HIV-positive (which was true) and he swam regularly in the pool (which wasn’t true). They never mentioned the pool again.

had an enormous white owl visit the farm this morning.
I can’t even imagine that there would be a snowy owl in eastern Kentucky, so it must have been an albino great horned.

THIS.

It’s easy as fuck to kill a virus. Freeze it out, burn it, use a harsh chemical to destroy it.

Unfortunately, all of these will ALSO kill the host, which is what we’re trying to avoid.

Might still be a Snowy.

From wikipedia:

In January 2009, a snowy owl appeared in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the first reported sighting in the state since 1987.[13] Also notable is the mass southern migration in the winter of 2011/2012, when thousands of snowy owls were spotted in various locations across the United States.[14] This was then followed by an even larger mass southern migration in 2013/2014 with the first snowy owls seen in Florida for decades.[

However, death reports are just that, reports. The death reports in the US are often limited to hospital or nursing home deaths, for example, and don’t include deaths elsewhere.

After a while, the Social Security system gets and publishes data on most deaths. Money talks.

Wow. And all I had was a groundhog outside my kitchen window. Through the screen.

The kind of people that will show up to have a sit-down dinner are also going to be the kind of people who are stingy as hell about tipping. Tipping is socialism.
