Gunmen kill 24 people in attack on Mexican drug rehab centre

At least 24 people were killed in an armed attack on a drug rehabilitation facility in the central Mexican city of Irapuato, Mexican police said on Wednesday, underlining the challenge the government has in fulfilling a pledge to stop gang violence.

Police in the city, located in Guanajuato state, said the gunmen also wounded seven in what was the second such attack to take place in Irapuato during the past month. The attack was also confirmed by a federal government official.

This is the second such attack in recent weeks. Ten people were killed in an attack on a rehab center in Irapuato on June 6.

Ex-George W. Bush officials launch super PAC backing Joe Biden for president

A group of former George W. Bush administration and campaign officials have launched a new super PAC supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, the latest in a growing number of Republican groups to come out in support of the former vice president over President Trump.
The group, called 43 Alumni for Biden, has recruited at least 200 former White House officials, campaign aides and Cabinet secretaries who worked under Bush to join the push against the Republican incumbent. They’re planning to roll out supportive testimonial videos featuring high-profile Republicans and to launch an effort in key states aimed at turning out disaffected Republican voters. News of the group was first reported by Reuters. Bush was the 43rd president.

Interesting, isn’t it? It’s almost like Old Republican money is reaching out to R Senators in risky seats to turn on Trump to save the Senate Majority. This smells entirely of Karl Rove, aka “The Turd Blossom”.

Panhandle cases are accellerating, especially in my county. The site was down yesterday.
pphd.org
They added individual county data since the start of the outbreak here, which might explain why the site was down.

Total cases: 312 (+7 today, +3 yesterday, +16 June 29)
Most by county: Scott’s Bluff 215 (+1, +1, +5), then Morrill 41 (mine, +3, +1, +7)
Total tests: 5,400 (5.6% positive)
Women are two-thirds of cases; women are blue on the chart, men are pink.
Most by age: 10-19 (53), then 20-29 (51)
Deaths: 3 (+1, Scott’s Bluff County)

He might. That law as written usually includes using a firearm to stop any crime. Stealing his flag would be a crime, and thus to a wingnut, worthy of the death penalty.

On the other hand, shooting her in the back as she was running doesn’t really qualify as standing ground. The article notes the sheriff has security video from his home, and he made no attempt to stop her or call out to her other than to come out and shoot at her.

Bellevue woman welcomes House’s approval of bill that requires auto shut-offs in keyless ignitions (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR, a woman who thought her parents were on an Alaska cruise last year found her parents dead in their home after two weeks.

They died of carbon monoxide poisoning after their keyless ignition vehicle started in the garage and ran through its whole tank of gasoline.

She’s since been pushing for a bill to have cars with an automatic shut-off with keyless ignitions. That bill passed the House on a party-line vote.

The Senate is expected to kill the bill.

I’m totally on the same wavelength as Sen. Hunt, dining out should be a luxury at this time, if only because you are asking people to put their health at risk so that you can be waited upon rather than calling in an order for pick-up or delivery. If you’re not willing to pay for the experience, then take your cheap ass to the McD’s drive-thru. At least there they only have to pretend to like you until you drive off.

After a Black protester is killed in Omaha, witnesses claim a rushed investigation ignored signs of the shooter’s allegedly racist past (Yahoo!)

The bar owner Jake Gardner who killed James Scurlock at the beginning of protests in May had an expired concealed carry permit. He was taken to the police station but released without charge. The county prosecutor was shamed into appointing a grand jury to investigate, and an independent prosecutor has taken over the case.

A woman was one of the witnesses; when the man came out with a gun she tackled him from behind and brought him to the ground. The man fired what was described as “two warning shots” which caused the woman to jump off him; Scurlock then tackled him and the bar owner shot him in the chest.

The witnesses say they tried to identify themselves to the police but the police ran them off. Thirty-six hours later the prosecutor said there would be no charges.

[Alayna] Melendez approached a crowd of people that had gathered outside a nearby bar and saw a man (who would later be identified as Gardner) with a gun in his hand, waving it around.

“I was taught gun rules from a very young age,” said Melendez. “My grandpa told me never to point a gun at anybody, even a BB gun.”

In video footage from the scene, Melendez can be seen standing behind Gardner. She was, she said, contemplating how to disarm him.

“I thought, I need to take this man down,” she said.

Melendez, who weighs 130 pounds and is 5 feet 3 “on a good day,” says she had never tried to wrestle a gun from anyone before. But as soon as Gardner placed the gun back in his waistband, she saw an opening, grabbed him from behind and brought him to the ground, landing in a puddle in the street.

With the young woman on his back, Gardner quickly fired what the county attorney would later describe as “two warning shots.” Melendez said it took her a second to register that the loud noise was not the flash-bangs police had been throwing to disperse crowds. “As soon as I realized they were gunshots, I ran away,” she said.

They need to enforce this part:

Arrol Sheehan, spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said the state’s “Safer at Home Order” explicitly states that people who test positive “shall be quarantined to their place of residence for a period of 14 days.”

Sheehan stressed that violation of the heath order is a misdemeanor and fines for each violation can be up to $500.

“Suspected violations of the home quarantine order should be reported to law enforcement and the local health department,” she said in a statement to ABC News.

It could be a blocked condenser drain line, if there is an AC condenser in the attic, as is sometimes the case with a two story house. If the condenser line is blocked, the water will go into a drain pan and that drain line frequently empties through the eaves.

While house sales are down, there are a few surprises which show up on the market.

In one of San Diego counties exclusive neighborhoods a mid-century modern classic is now for sale: Antelline House

Current listing is secretive, but you can find pictures at an older listing here.

A good example of mid-century modern.

The only bad thing is that the street it is own is now a busy street. When it was built the road was much more a country road: goo.gl

If it was priced cheaper (I think when it last sold in 1998) the price was only $788k) then I suspect that a “developer” would just come in and bulldoze it to build some oversized monstrosity, given that developers want new.

Yes—even our 1-story originally had the drain from the attic. The replacement is in a 1st floor closet, but still pumps the condensate up to the original line.

If anyone watches the Bravo show Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles, this season the first big budget house is one in San Diego, called the “Razor House”.

On the show Altman and Flagg convince the seller to drop the price from $30M to $25M. Well….

They did end up selling the house, the episode has not aired yet, but the sales data shows that the final selling price was only $21.6M.

zillow.com

It’s a cliffside monstrosity, a memorial to “new money”: Razor House - the most unique and exclusive “trophy properties” in the world

Anyway, in this much newer house one can find design clues that go back to the older houses like the Antelline House. But the newer house I find grotesque, while the older house is much more graceful.

Quite a few people here and elsewhere, including real experts, have noticed the same thing. Obviously the unexpected opportunity presented by Covid19 would create an increase in demand but I wonder if there might be another factor: Skilled trolls who are perfectly willing to get Trump re-elected, recruit spies, or incite goober militia might balk at a project whose objective is to spread disease and mass death. Public records show about $34 million was spent building the 11,000-square-foot estate, which has never been occupied. Construction began in 2002 and was completed in 2008. The original sale price was set at $45 million but has consistently been slashed according to the market and even more when it became a bankruptcy property.

Since bars have been able to offer pickup service, we’ve been getting our beer from a local brewery. They let you order online and they can the beer fresh from the tap for you to pick up.

The ordering software defaults to a 10% tip, but we always max it out to 25%. The brewery has been struggling, so we’re trying to help them by ordering regularly (and I’ve picked up some of their merch with that cool Commie logo). It’s the least we can do in return for good beer.

Another Republican criminal goes down. This time the county clerk of Goshen County, Wyoming [seat Torrington].

Former Goshen County [Wyo.] clerk, accused of embezzling more than $209,000, pleads to two felony charges.

Carlson interviewed Rickard at a Scottsbluff hospital on Jan. 24, 2019, as she was a patient there. During that interview, Rickard initially denied knowing how the funds were missing, but eventually admitted to taking some money from the bank deposits. She allegedly said she was sorry and admitted the money was used to pay bills, rent and a cell phone for a relative. She said her family, which also owned Wyoming Theatre, was living from paycheck to paycheck.

That is one rugged picture of her in the article at the Star-Herald.

The funds were discovered missing when the Goshen County Attorney was notified cheques drawn on the county’s bank account bounced.

She will be sentenced in mid-July.

The economy continues grinding away. Trump’s failures continue piling up, and the unemployment rate is still well above the peak from the Great Recession. It’s also an illusion because reopening too soon may have generated some of the recovery, but as businesses are forced to close again particularly in states like FL, TX, CA, and elsewhere (NY, NJ) are looking at delaying/prolonging shutdowns due to cases climbing there, it’s going to be a prolonged depression.

It didn’t have to be this way, but Trump and his cult followers decided to ignore the health experts and wont mandate mask wearing, even though that’s critical to the economic recovery.

Paywalled, but I know the lyrics. A sloppy American electorate done fucked up, and we’re going to pay for it. We won’t be that lucky again.

Hmm. It didn’t flag me for a paywall. I can read the article.

The Pentagon has always found “war games” indispensable. Informed role players provide a sharper sense of how military escalations unfold. The same is true of the electoral battlefield. In three out of four US election games run by the Transition Integrity Project, a non-partisan group created by Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law school and Nils Gilman of the Berggruen Institute, the US republic hit constitutional impasse by the conclusion in January 2021.

Even in the fourth scenario, where Mr Biden had clearly won the popular vote and the electoral college, the result was contested. Mr Trump only agreed to leave office after Mr Biden promised him a blanket pardon.

It is the other three prospects we should worry about. Much like the situation outlined above — in which I helped play the role of the media — presidential incumbency is a huge advantage. America is unique in giving its losing chief executive another 10 weeks of power — nuclear button included — before handing over to the winner.

It is one thing when the defeated president is Jimmy Carter or George HW Bush (the last two one-term presidents). They personified fair play. It is quite another if the loser is Mr Trump. As they say, possession is nine-tenths of the law.

Graham is busy complimenting Trump on his golf game.

That’s right - suck up to Trump on the golf course, all while the economy craters, 131,000+ are dead from his malfeasance, and he’s a treasonweasel who refused to protect our troops from Russian bounties all while sucking up to Putin.

That makes Graham a complicit accessory to Trump’s misconduct.

That goes back to Sen. Graham’s first private golf outing Donald Trump invited him to, when Graham was an implacable enemy of Trump. He came out of that golf game as one of Trump’s strongest supporters.

I don’t know what Trump has on Graham, but it would seem to be something that would not only end his career, but maybe send him to jail.

I could see Trump trying to pull off some kind of “President in exile” bullshit. And you know what? I’m fine with him doing that.

He can do all that from his corner office in the Kremlin, never able to return to the USA, while his kids and his son-in-law are arrested, while the Trump Organization is brought down and as Trump Tower is seized by the city of New York and condemned as unfit for human habitation.

More on that from the same article:

The other games began with a narrow Biden victory and an inconclusive electoral college result. In both cases, Mr Trump threatened to federalise the national guard to skew or shut down ballot recounts in contested states. Bill Barr, the US attorney-general, helped Republican legislatures certify results that contradicted their Democratic governors. Four swing states — Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina — have split party control. In each scenario, Mr Trump leverages his office to gain the upper hand. The Supreme Court remains aloof.

None of this is far-fetched. No matter who was playing the game, Mr Trump’s instincts were never in question. The participants — senior legal, political and former government figures — were split between Republicans and Democrats. These were exercises rather than forecasts. Yet they left little doubt that the only prospect for a peaceful transition would be a strong victory for either candidate in November.

Since Mr Trump has almost no chance of winning the popular vote, the most realistic hope for US stability would be a clear Biden victory. Today’s polls suggest he would win comfortably. But Mr Biden’s lead will probably narrow in the 18 weeks between now and then. The closer the race, the less soundly we should sleep. American democracy is heading into the mother of all stress tests.

There it is in the news:

Jeffrey Epstein Confidante Ghislaine Maxwell Arrested, Sources Say (NBC New York)

Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite and heiress who became a confidante of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and was later accused of involvement in his alleged sexual crimes, has been arrested by the FBI, two senior law enforcement sources tell News 4 New York.

She was arrested in Bedford, New Hampshire around 8:30 a.m. on charges she conspired with Epstein to sexually abuse minors and is expected to appear in a federal court later today, the sources say.

Her father Robert Maxwell was a piece of work himself. He escaped from the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and built a media empire in the United Kingdom. When he died in 1991(found floating in the Atlantic next to his yacht Lady Ghislaine), huge discrepancies were found in the accounts of his company and banks started calling in loans. It was found he embezzled the pension funds of his company. The company collapsed shortly thereafter.

Ruffini is a GOP pollster - facts and new information are an anathema to GOPers.

(EDIT-added):

I’ve been to the Black Hills once. I’ve written about it, and I was fascinated to learn the history of how the US fucked over the Sioux and their claims to the Black Hills. It was set out in the Treaty of Fort Laramie. The moment gold was found in the Hills, the US abrogated the treaty and seized the lands. Even Mount Rushmore was expropriated by the US and state of South Dakota over objections of the tribe.

The parklands (Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, etc.) may now preserve the land, but it wasn’t meant to be federal land in the first place. It was set aside as tribal land. And we’re still fucking over the tribes. The US offered up a monetary settlement, but the tribe wants the land so the money sits in escrow in the meantime - now over $1 billion. That’s a pittance compared to the value of the land and gold extracted from just Lead, South Dakota mine district (which extracted ~1.2 million kg of gold over life of the mine).

If a kg of gold is worth around $50,000, that means you’re looking at $60 billion in gold alone.

Wholly crap, they go after Democrats because of Trump right out of the gate. The lede:

The Trump years have scrambled old ideological lines. So perhaps it is not so surprising that in recent days George F. Will, the elegant dean of conservative columnists, and Matt Taibbi, a raucous liberal iconoclast, found themselves gnawing on different parts of the same bone.

Here’s what made their agreement noteworthy: It had nothing to do with Donald Trump. In this case, both writers were agitated by what they see as the left’s effort to stifle free thinking and bully those who dissent from its rigid ideological and racial orthodoxy.

“… stifle free thinking and bully those who dissent, &c …”

(VIA Daily Beast) “What has been created is a mindset of a large segment of the population that COVID is not real, that it isn’t serious,” said Shelton, a Democrat. “There’s the far-out conspiracy theorists that think this whole thing’s an effort to hurt President Trump. I mean, just really outlandish conspiracy theories floating around, which is hampering the ability of all levels of government to respond to COVID-19.”

And now his home state of Mississippi, like others across the country is facing the potential consequences.

Shelton is among those in the state who have continued to show concern over the statewide handling of the pandemic, which has seen Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves mix in severe warnings about the coronavirus with loosened statewide rules in recent weeks that came before the state’s recent spike in cases.

Those issues culminated Wednesday in Reeves announcing he was pausing the state’s reopening and emphasizing “this is not a hoax,” as the state considers next steps. The state needs “more cooperation, not more mandates,” Reeves said.

“Additional orders are useless if people will not follow what we have in place now,” Reeves told reporters during a press briefing. “And you and I both know that is the reality on the ground.”

Republicans have spent decades creating this monster, now they’re pissed because they’re losing control of it.

It would almost be funny if there wasn’t so damn much at stake.

It’d go up to the 3d Department Appellate Division. From there, it’s the State Court of Appeals (top level court in NY). But I’d go out on a limb to say those other courts would rule that prior restraint wins the day and allows publication. They’re not going to deny the publication here.

The USA right now has 1000 Leicesters or Güterslohs

The situation in Gütersloh, Germany, is connected to a single meat packing plant. And do you know what the government is doing? Invoking the Defense Production Act to force people back to work while exempting employers from liability?

No, they are reforming legislation concerning working conditions and the treatment of animals in the meat packing industry, as this is badly damaging Germany’s reputation as a producer/exporter of quality meat products.

Trump flew into a rage every time US intelligence warned him about Russia, so officials gave up briefing him on it, report says

President Donald Trump was briefed less and less with warnings about Russia’s behavior toward the US because he would get angry when presented with intelligence about it, CNN reported on Wednesday.

Early in Trump’s presidency, officials learned to limit their verbal briefings on the topic and would often see their written materials ignored, former administration officials told CNN’s Jim Sciutto.

“The president has created an environment that dissuades, if not prohibits, the mentioning of any intelligence that isn’t favorable to Russia,” a former senior national security staffer told CNN.

Our president is a manchild who sticks his fingers in his ears and babbles “LALALALALA I CAN’T HEAR YOU!” if anything bad about his goddamn sugar daddy Putin is said.

Yeah, that “Lamborghini of walls” is looking more like a Yugo: sounds like the first bad flood of the Rio Grande will wash most of it away.
But it seems to have accomplished its principal function, anyway: not deterring border-crossers, of course, but qualifying its grifter builder for more Federal bucks. Mission Accomplished….

He Was Convicted of Murder Then Pardoned By Trump. His Troops Suffered A Different Fate

Only a few hours had passed since President Trump pardoned 1st Lt. Clint Lorance and the men of 1st Platoon were still trying to make sense of how it was even possible.

How could a man they blamed for ruining their lives, an officer the Army convicted of second-degree murder and other charges, be forgiven so easily? How could their president allow him to just walk free?

“I feel like I’m in a nightmare,” Lucas Gray, a former specialist from the unit, texted his old squad leader, who was out of the Army and living in Fayetteville, N.C.

“I haven’t been handling it well either,” replied Mike McGuinness on Nov. 15, the day Lorance was pardoned.

“There’s literally no point in anything we did or said,” Gray continued. “Now he gets to be the hero . . .”

“And we’re left to deal with it,” McGuinness concluded.

re: #301 wrenchwench

I’m afraid of Trump because the people who are supposed to help him, and therefore the rest of us, are afraid to do anything helpful.

Malicious narcissists can’t handle criticism or the implication that they are responsible for anything bad. Bringing up Russia, no matter the context, would be perceived by Trump as a reference to the whole Russia election scandal and as such, a criticism.

Narcissists react to any real or perceived criticism by punishing the offending party, by attacking and denigrating the person, since to them, no criticism is valid.

All his hires are the “best” until they leave, then he immediately trashes them, especially if they speak negatively about him. His only motivation in current hires is putting sycophants in place to ensure loyalty to him rather than the country.

Knowing the pettiness of the orange leaky bag of mostly stupidity, I can only image the dread of being assigned the task of trying to get information through the membrane of reality-denying ignorance containing all the concentrated stupidity. Especially in light of his history of vindictiveness for those trying to follow their oaths to the constitution, instead of being blindly loyal.

That doesn’t change the fact that any functional administration wouldn’t have this issue, or that speaking truth to power is the obligation of those in public service.

I’d say fuck trump, but we’re the ones who are fucked until we get rid of that putrid puss-sack sliming the Oval Office.
