Ford’s greatest mistake. Had he not pardoned Nixon, he could have used the Bicentennial bump to win election. David Gergen described Ford as a thoroughly decent man but one who did not understand optics.
Who knows, if we would have had Ford in ‘76, it probably would have opened the door to Kennedy, Brown or Glenn in 1980.

I’m stuck with thirty-day renewals because conservatives in death penalty states experimented on death row inmates with my medication in Virginia and Oklahoma. The result was the company which makes it banned it for sale in the USA.
President Obama negotiated a solution with the EU to allow its sale here, but it requires signing an affidavit saying you won’t transfer the drug if you live in a death penalty state to any state agency, and limits prescriptions to thirty days.
Prior to human experimentation to kill people in Virginia and Oklahoma, I had ninety-day prescriptions.

Grandpa Bacon said that “This Land Is Your Land” should have been our National Anthem.
re: #170 TarHellion
I dated an Austrian au pair back in the early 1990s. She could not believe teams played the national anthem before games. She associated it with Nazism from the 30s. How prescient she would be. I love the national anthem. But the way it has been perverted.
I don’t mind it but I hate the mixing of the military & LEO with sport.

That or America the Beautiful, the Ray Charles version.

It’s something I never really thought about until recently. I remember finding it weird when we started singing God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch after 9/11. Now I feel the same way about the national anthem. If our patriotism is so weak that we need to sing the song before sporting events, then maybe we aren’t we who thought we were

And then he blocked me, so I’ll assume I was on target.
They have to have their culture war, because they sure can’t run on Trump’s or the GOP’s record.
If the GOP actually ran on what they support, tax cuts for billionaires and deregulation of such things as your safe water, they would be a rump party.
In my sixty years, I don’t ever recall a GOP campaign which did not include outrage at a perceived cultural ill.

While Marco tweets bible quotes, Eva actually DOES things to help people:

He may not be the most right wing in the Senate but he is one of the most obnoxious ones. I hate his choir boy act and his wanting to play the proud son of Cuban immigrants while shitting on other immigrants and not acknowledging the privileges that Cuban immigrants compared with other immigrants have had.

Forced patriotism isn’t patriotism at all. I always stand but I don’t knock anyone for choosing to kneel.

Kind of like people who have to advance their religiosity as if it is some affirmation of their faith. I’m a proud Episcopalian, but I do not advance it. I just try to silently live it, imperfect as it may be.

Michelle is fanfuckingtastic.
One half of my favorite first couple. I thoroughly enjoyed her memoir.

I’m not a big fan of the slavery apologtics of the third verse:
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Or the religious call-out of the fourth verse:
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Exactly. If your faith needs to be forced on others, it ain’t strong. I am not religious but I understand that faith is supposed to be a deeply personal thing. So something like forced prayer is something that I just don’t get.

This is a great speech. I know she doesn’t like politics but she is a powerful speaker.

Michelle is Killing it. Wow!!!
I’ll have to wait for it to go up on YouTube.
Cheer on my behalf, please.

It’s part of their plan to make America a “Christian” nation by making everyone follow Christian rules. Apparently they aren’t understanding that rules and laws aren’t what Christ came to preach.

I just try to be good to people. From talking by name with the cashier who checks me out, to the pharma tech who brings me or Mrs. TarH’s medicines. We are all in this together.
Ya’ll see who made Barack Obama president, right?

If I were scoring for points, I’d say I’d like a little less rhetorical and tonal pleading, and just a touch higher wpm.
But yes, a good speech, a strong message, saying things that need to be said.
re: #143 BeachDem
Eva is doing a good job tying things together as well. I think she was a good choice.
She was a guest on that PBS genealogy show; her first immigrant ancestor was 1603. Her family’s been in what’s now Texas since before the Mayflower set sail. Before Jamestown. Before any African slaves were brought to this side of the Atlantic.
This speech is something else. I’m tearing up.
I’m watching Star Trek, the original series. That’s as close to politics as I want to get tonight.

Most of the history of Christianity has been about forcing others to believe as they, or killing them if they don’t.
You don’t hear much about the 2nd Century Ebionites anymore (because Christians slaughtered them). Ditto with the Marcionites. Same with the Gnositcs later.
The most famous part of Christian rule was the Inquisition, on the heels of the Dark Ages.
The modern definitions of faith do not comport to the history of the religion. It was dragged into the modern era by the Enlightenment, not by anything the faithful did.
When the United States was founded as a secular state, we were the only one in the world. Zealous Christians want to correct that “mistake.”
Baby steps. The law forbidding changing your gender on your birth certificate was shot down earlier and now this. Fuck the bigots.

Next year is the centennial for my last direct ancestor’s immigration. The first one was in Washington’s first term. I’m a newcomer compared to Eva.

They have to have their culture wars. They can’t win on their positions.
They’re plenty happy fiscal conservatives spending tax money on unconstitutional laws.
See also the anti-abortion bill just passed in my state, which will also get shot down.
I just caught Billy Porter singing the opening? I didn’t know he can sing that good. Damn.

The sad thing is that Idaho’s A.G. flat out told Little that these laws would be found unconstitutional if he signed/enacted them and he did it anyway.

2008 I was uncertain who to vote for because I actually met Cdr John McCain post POW. He was very cool dude and gracious to my wild haired hell raiser self. And Obama was still a wild card
Two women sealed the deal: Michelle and Sarah
Michelle gave such a great and impassioned life story video at 2008 that made me respect the hell out of her and family.
Sarah. Sarah made me realize the effectiveness of willful ignorance in a sexyish package. But that wink made me sick to think she was the VP choice.
