Colbert: Ending the Coronavirus Pandemic Is NOT One of Donald Trump’s Accomplishments

With infections and hospitalizations spiking across the country, the United States is clearly a long way from ending the Covid-19 pandemic. But the White House seems to think a nonsensical press release will make Americans believe otherwise. #Colbert #Monologue #LSSC

i know this is correlation without causation
it’s still fun
and would that it were given yesterday’s 11 national polls with trump averaging 42%

First Read points out the direct correlation between a sitting president’s job rating and his ballot position:

In 1984, Ronald Reagan’s job rating was 58%; he got 58.8% of the vote.
In 1992, George H.W. Bush’s rating was 36%; he got 37.4% of the vote.
In 1996, Bill Clinton’s approval was 56%; he got 49.2% in that three-way race.
In 2004, George W. Bush’s approval was 49%; he got 50.7% of the vote.
And in 2012, Barack Obama’s approval was 49%; he got 51.1% of the vote.

President Trump? His job rating in our most recent national NBC/WSJ poll was 44%.

Fucking fascist cop union covering for fascist criminal cops:

[Embedded content]

We have the entire event on video. It shows Philly cops smashing SUV window, assaulting the driver, and grabbing the child out of the vehicle. This wasn’t a lost child. It was a kidnapped child. The cops kidnapped the child under claim of “enforcing law”.

Nothing about this is legit, but the police unions defend this crap uncritically. And the right wing amplifies it. Criticism of the cops and their unions is used as a cudgel against Democrats who insist on holding police accountable for their actions - for cops to do better.

The GOP doesn’t want cops doing better. They want the cops to inflict violence and pain on those the GOP deems unworthy.

There was a throwaway line in Matt Damon’s The Martian where he claims Mars as his own as the only person to actually colonize the planet since he grew crops there.

I’ve been thinking about laws on Mars. There’s an international treaty saying that no country can lay claim to anything that’s not on Earth. By another treaty if you’re not in any country’s territory, maritime law applies. So Mars is international waters. Now, NASA is an American non-military organization, it owns the Hab. But the second I walk outside I’m in international waters. So here’s the cool part. I’m about to leave for the Schiaparelli Crater where I’m going to commandeer the Ares IV lander. Nobody explicitly gave me permission to do this, and they can’t until I’m on board the Ares IV. So I’m going to be taking a craft over in international waters without permission, which by definition… makes me a pirate. Mark Watney: Space Pirate.

There was a similar storyline planned for Fallout 2 that was never included in the game. Only there, the group planning to escape the planet was called The Enclave, which was a secret organization of politicians, power brokers, and the wealthy elite who saw the impending nuclear war and escaped to a secret network of government bunkers. Their original plan was to use the vaults that most of the unwashed masses escaped to as petri dishes to test out possible scenarios that would be encountered on the space ark being constructed for planetary escape after the bombs fell. But the rocket was destroyed/unfinished when war were declared, so they fell back on Plan B: Reclaim the surface world by wiping out the “mutants” (i.e. anybody who wasn’t living in an Enclave bunker).

Iowa announced they had nearly 2,000 new covid19 cases today. That’s almost more than NY and NJ combined new cases.

ND and SD each has over 1,000 new cases reported today. That’s despite having a population that’s about 4.5% of NY (880k vs 19.5 million). That’s abysmal.

Deaths keep climbing nationwide. We’re losing about 8 737-700 passenger manifests worth of people to the pandemic daily. So when Trump says why is media focusing on covid covid covid and that a plane could crash and they’d focus on covid, you know why:

it’s because we’re losing more than a thousand Americans a day, and it’s the equivalent of crashing a fleet of aircraft every day - Trump’s crashing a plane of covid19 victims every 3 hours. Every day. For months on end.

JFC 🤣

Today, the Washington Post reported that a $250 ad campaign ostensibly designed to “defeat despair” caused by the coronavirus pandemic was tailored boost Trump’s re-election chances. Little surprise there, right? As Trump’s appointees and contractors considered which celebrities to ask to star in the ads, candidates were flat-out rejected if they were seen to be opponents of the president and his policies.

According to leaked documents obtained by the Post, the Trump administration was not keen on asking Billie Eilish to participate: the documents describe Eilish as “not a Trump Supporter” and “destroying our country and everything we care about.” It’s not revealed how the Trump administration reached this equally terrifying and hilarious conclusion.

Out of 274 celebrities considered, 10 were approved. Other rejected celebrities included Jennifer (for her Super Bowl performance which criticized Trump’s immigration policies), Justin Timberlake (“publicly endorsed Obama and supports gay marriage,” according to the Trump admin document), and Christina Aguilera (“is an Obama-supporting Democrat and a gay rights supporting liberal”). Celebrities who made the cut included actor Dennis Quaid, Dr. Oz, and Billy Ray Cyrus.

The entire campaign has been put on hold, and none of the filmed ads have aired on television. The brains behind the campaign, Trump’s Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Caputo, is currently on a 60-day leave after a Facebook Live broadcast in which he baselessly told Trump supporters to prepare for an armed insurrection led by left-wing groups.

thefader.com

So, obviously the Trumpites think Billie Eilish is more dangerous than COVID-19. And presumably, worse than Hitler.

As a couple of folks noted above and on the overnight thread, the Supreme Court is willing to defer to the state courts where they’ve ruled on specific rules, but are more likely to overturn the rules where a federal court has imposed the change.

State courts should have final say over what their states do under their states laws (federalism after all) but we know how states rights works with the right wing. It’s okay until the state’s right being asserted conflicts with GOP/right wing control/power.

Modern journalism is a shit show. The subject of this page and Todd are a great reason why. Over 200K are dead. Glenn thinks his drama with The Intercept is worth a damn and then there’s Chuck here who thinks a presidential candidate is talking too much about the greatest health crisis in a century. We could well end up with more dead than we lost in the Civil War and all those lives had meaning.

Apparently Chuck’s whole bit was suggesting that Biden’s taking CV-19 “too seriously” because he’s not showing the same level of disregard for his supporters that Trump does by holding massive rallies with crowds crammed together to look better for the cameras and no masks in sight.

Yeah I think so too especially when you’ve got a crisis like this going on. I know we were burned badly in 2016 but I think there are factors from ‘16 that were overlooked that we should see now as our benefit. Trump is no longer the blustering challenger telling us to believe him. What’s more is he’s struggled to demonized his opponent. Biden has grown more popular as Trump has attempted to defined him as a corrupt senile puppet of the far left. I think Biden can potentially top out at 55% of the popular vote which would be the highest anyone’s gotten in that since Reagan in ‘84.

I understood the worry earlier in the election, when there was still a strong case to be made that Trump might be able to ride a “strong” economy and social issues to a second term on a razor-thin margin. But towards the end of the summer, and especially after the conventions, I’ve felt that there just needed to be something major in his favor to swing the election. And yet, every time he’s been presented with such a scenario, he’s so badly flubbed it that it actually turned into a liability for his own campaign.

At this point, I understand hesitancy over saying that Biden can’t lose, but some of the fearmongering that has gone on to suggest that Trump will still successfully win is just…well, it’s outright embarrassing for the people suggesting it.

Yeah it was different when the economy was better which is why I honestly thought a younger upstart candidate like Harris, the two Texans, Pete, Booker, or Klobuchar might be a better fit but Covid changed that for me.

there isn’t one.

There was an opinion piece earlier this year (IIRC, over at E-V) that pointed out the fallacy in the idea that there was this huge wellspring of untapped voters that were going to power Trump to a second term. The idea was simply that there’s no way that every “undecided” voter was going to break for Trump at the last minute, that he was not going to get 100% of that vote. And that the more people he drove away from his 2016 coalition to appeal to that crowd, the more people that were going to the Biden camp.

I mean parts of the media love to act like Trump has this sway with the black community. He doesn’t. In fact, if you discount McCain and Romney who were running against Obama, Trump got the lowest percentage of the vote from the black community of any Republican that has run for President since Nixon in ‘68. Yeah black men slightly prefer him than black women but that’s because of the gender gap which exists in every socioeconomic group in the country.

True: but President Donald Trump is a devil too far for a lot of what would otherwise be “safe” Republican voters.
And outside of the loony-left and the Bernouts (some overlap there), that attitude doesn’t seem to apply much to Joe Biden.

There was a throwaway line in Matt Damon’s The Martian where he claims Mars as his own as the only person to actually colonize the planet since he grew crops there.

There’s a good essay on the topic here by a space lawyer (which is a pretty cool title). I’ve been tangentially involved in some of these topics. So no, per the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, Matt Damon doesn’t get to claim Mars (the treaty uses the term “any heavenly body”.) It would also mean that you couldn’t claim an asteroid as your property for mining, and someone else could mine it as well as long as they didn’t start a conflict. Of course, the OST could always be amended by the participating nations, but I don’t think there’s any move to do so any time soon.

It’s come up a few times, so it’s clear to me that Musk and some other billionaires actually do think they will form their own colonies on Mars and/or the Moon for the express purpose of getting away from little Earth concepts like human rights. They want to be the bad guys in sci fi movies.

Basically, he’d need to pull royal flush by this point:

- Suppress enough votes in key states that the margins either swing in his favor or are razor-thin enough to fuck with by other means

- Successfully challenge enough votes (absentee or provisional) that he can pull off wins in districts that are close

- Win challenges in the courts to either prevent recounts or shorten the period for ballots to come in by mail

- Prevent Dems from overturning his margins in other states through court challenges

- Basically win (outright or through chicanery) every swing state and pick off one or more states that are safely in the Biden column

A combo of Arizona and Nb2CD or Me2CD would also do it. There is a good chance Biden will be able to claim victory early Wednesday morning.

I really don’t want to present endless pessimism either, but I think there are a few valid reasons to worry.

1) Polls mean nothing.
1a) One reason polls mean nothing is that polls do not equal votes. People might not vote. They might change their mind. They might make a mistake that invalidates their vote. And even if they vote and do it right, Republicans can and will discard votes, either by disenfranchising the voter or by simply throwing it away post facto.
1b) Another reason polls mean nothing is that, to put it bluntly, Trumpers are liars. Their massive dishonesty is central to their identity. Lying to pollsters or the media is a mark of honour.

2) America is a nation built around the idea that power rests in the hands of a very few, a very select, privileged class. The idea that power comes from the people is quaint, a little myth Americans tell themselves to justify the white male oligarchy they live in. The power centres in the country are its wealthy elites and the giant media conglomerates that keep the populace in line, and their support for the current regime have never faltered.

3) Blatant voter suppression and electoral fraud has already been done for years and America has done nothing. Just like everything else in the Trump era, saying the quiet part out loud and committing crimes in the open won’t carry any consequences. Tossing votes, stopping counting, overturning results, or even just declaring victory in defiance of reality - these would not be possible in other places where rule of law matters and reality is consensual. But in America, laws don’t apply to certain groups of people, and reality is determined by what people see on TV or read on Facebook.

Look, I hope none of this comes to pass. I really do. I think there are many reasons to be optimistic about this election. But fascists don’t simply give up power because the slaves say they should.

Another bit to keep in mind: His campaign is pretty much broke, which means any court challenges are either going to have been bankrolled by the state/local GOP or he’s going to have to blatantly violate even more laws to charge the bill to the federal credit card.

Very much like religious prophets or psychics. They amplify the hits and ignore the misses (the Texas sharpshooter fallacy), so it makes them appear as if they are prescient.

Contrary to the myth that we’ve been fed for years by journalists who got caught with their pants down on Election Night 2016, the final polls were fairly accurate even if the tea leaves were misread. Hillary’s PV win was almost exactly what the final polls showed, while district-level polls showed that there was movement in Trump’s direction that state/national polls didn’t reflect. The latter is not showing up this go-around, while a lot of pollsters learned their lessons from the former and have altered their projections based upon that uncertainty factor. Even if the polls are as far off as they were in 2016, Biden’s leads is still large enough to avoid the sort of razor-thin wins that carried the day for Trump.

1b) Another reason polls mean nothing is that, to put it bluntly, Trumpers are liars. Their massive dishonesty is central to their identity. Lying to pollsters or the media is a mark of honour.

I have very strong doubts that there are enough MAGAts lying to pollsters to throw off the results that much.

Biden has cashed in almost 7 times more from the Wall Street crowd than Trump has this election. And the rich elite got not only a massive tax cut, but also 3 SCOTUS justices out of Trump. Saving his ass really brings them no further benefit, especially if he loses the Senate and thus the ability to offer them further cuts.

The level of fuckery that will be needed next week to overturn that many votes is pretty much impossible to hide. And not enough of the key states that Trump needs to win are safely in Republican hands to carry the day.

Look, I hope none of this comes to pass. I really do. I think there are many reasons to be optimistic about this election. But fascists don’t simply give up power because the slaves say they should.

I really am beginning to wonder if I can continue to label myself as LGF’s Cynical Bastard after this election.

I still don’t know what Trump’s health care plan is but I hear it’s great and better than ACA. But I’ve also heard this for the last three years. The thing is the Republican Party as we know it is a joke. It doesn’t have a governing ideology. It just has Trump’s whims.

Literally had no platform other than “in Trump we trust.”

By the way, when it comes to the polls, I think part of what shocked so many people in 2016 is that it was only the second election in recent memory (and the first since 2008) where the PV winner did not win the EC. That led to this mindset that the PV had to have been totally inaccurate, which was the only explanation for Trump winning.

fivethirtyeight.com now has Biden clearly favored to win 258 electoral votes, so if he wins all those, he can clinch by winning any one of the following states: Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Ohio or Texas. A combo of Arizona and Nb2CD or Me2CD would also do it. There is a good chance Biden will be able to claim victory early Wednesday morning.

The route to victory clearly runs through NE-2.

Another bit to keep in mind: His campaign is pretty much broke, which means any court challenges are either going to have been bankrolled by the state/local GOP or he’s going to have to blatantly violate even more laws to charge the bill to the federal credit card.

So there’s a good possibility we won’t see as many challenges in the courts as he might need in order to fuck with the final results.

All that money stolen from the Wisc. GOP doesn’t help either.

I don’t sanction theft, but if they haven’t got the money because they couldn’t secure the backend of their computer systems, then they can’t mount a challenge.

The national GOP isn’t doing really well with money either, though there’s nothing which would prevent a bunch of deep-pocket GOP donors to fund challenges.

Trump Regime Won’t Confirm a WTO Director, JM Ashby on Bob Cesca dot com.

As you may know, the Trump regime has already crippled the World Trade Organization (WTO) by refusing to consent to the appointment of any new judges to the trade body’s appellate court. Appellate judges served fixed terms and after several judges saw their terms expire, Trump’s regime refused to confirm their replacements. The appellate court requires at least three judges to issue new decisions and it currently only has one.

But the WTO has other and even bigger positions that need to be filled including the organization’s chief director.

The Trump regime is now refusing to confirm a new director supported by virtually everyone else.

ASTEROID STILL HEADING FOR PEORIA ON ELECTION DAY! (Goes to Weekly World News, more at the link):

HOUSTON, TX - Weekly World News met with chief NASA scientist, Banesh Bannerjee, to discuss the latest on the asteroid that is hurtling toward Earth on election day.

In August, scientists predicted that Asteroid 2019XPX5 will hit earth on election day. They weren’t sure exactly where it was going to hit but estimated that it was going to hit Russia (somewhere in Siberia) or Peoria, IL. As of October 7th, 2020, it appears that the asteroid will miss Russia altogether and the asteroid is “making a beeline for Peoria,” as Dr. Bannerjee told Weekly World News.

“We have been watching the asteroid closely and making calculations every hour on the hours,” Dr. Bannerjee said. It appears that the asteroid’s trajectory has changed. It either will hit Peoria or it will miss Earth entirely.

Wisconsin Republican Party says hackers stole $2.3 million from campaign account using manipulated invoices Chicago Tribune

MADISON, WIS. — Hackers have stolen $2.3 million from the Wisconsin Republican Party’s account that was being used to help reelect President Donald Trump in the key battleground state, the party’s chairman told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The party noticed the suspicious activity on Oct. 22 and contacted the FBI on Friday, said Republican Party Chairman Andrew Hitt.

Hitt said the FBI is investigating. FBI spokesman Brett Banner said that, per policy, “the FBI is not permitted to confirm or deny an investigation.” The Wisconsin Department of Justice, which has a center focused on cyber crime able to assist if requested, has not been asked to investigate, said spokeswoman Rebecca Ballweg.

For those who either can’t read the link or tl;dr, Glenn’s editor basically tells him that his story is so full of conjecture and raw bullshit that they can’t publish it as-is, Glenn basically pulls a “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!” response, his editor tells him that they’re not bending to his will, and he quits in a massive tantrum.

1 year from now, after the Biden Administration has cleaned house and started investigations and legal proceedings, the entire world will be aghast at the level of criminality, contempt for the law, and open hostility to any sort of decency by hundreds of department directors, campaign staff and government loyalists under Trump. Hundreds or people are going to jail. Several $Billions of taxpayer funds and Trump Campaign accounts will have vanished never to be seen again.

I’ve a strong suspicion that there won’t be as many court challenges as people may think. Or that the challenges will be carried all the way to the USSC bench as feared.

Part of clownstick’s problem, is going to be “forfeiture by wrongdoing”. A law student could win the case against him. *I* could win the case and I’m not a lawyer.

He can’t bitch about the election results after telling his clowns to commit voter fraud out loud, on camera, for months. Even in this environment it will get laughed out of court.

Yeah “ I don’t like these results” isn’t going to fly with most judges.

Assenge. Yet another example of the far left’s shitty judgment of character. The problem with the far left horseshoes is they think they know better but they act just as ignorant as the Tea Party.

The sad reality of the past 2 decades is that there was too much confirmation bias working in favor of shitheels like Greenwald, Assange, and Snowden. Too many people with their own agendas happily latching onto any story that painted the government in the worst light, even if it was being done with the help of persons or organizations acting in bad faith.

He clearly was coasting on the reputation of others with Wikileaks and it was equally clear that he was manipulating the release of information, which should have been a giant freaking clue.

I’m pretty sure Joe purposely let’s go of the handrail and trots down the stairs just to annoy Trump

[Embedded content]

I’m 17 years younger than Biden, but I hold the rail when going down the stairs and have since forever. I have ankles that occasionally “flip” and I By God do not want to be flying down the stairs unexpectedly. Sometimes I am barely touching the rail, though.

I’m jealous of his assurance.

re: #210 Targetpractice

Biden has cashed in almost 7 times more from the Wall Street crowd than Trump has this election. And the rich elite got not only a massive tax cut, but also 3 SCOTUS justices out of Trump. Saving his ass really brings them no further benefit, especially if he loses the Senate and thus the ability to offer them further cuts.

Then don’t save Trump. All they need to preserve is a Senate majority, since a Republican Senate Majority leader is a dictator that cannot be challenged.

The level of fuckery that will be needed next week to overturn that many votes is pretty much impossible to hide. And not enough of the key states that Trump needs to win are safely in Republican hands to carry the day.

Why hide it? There’s no need to hide it - hiding it implies that there might be a consequence if they were caught. Just say, none of those votes counted, we actually won. Repeat every time you’re questioned. CNN will have talking heads on to discuss why the election is in question. The NYT will have a headline, ‘On Subject of Vote-Counting, A Political Minefield for Democrats’. Any old flimsy reason to discard votes will be enough. A few weeks of that, 51% of the American public will agree that the election was questionable. Even if you ultimately install Biden as President, the American people will see him as somehow illegitimate, and thus entirely appropriate for Congress to disempower him.

I really am beginning to wonder if I can continue to label myself as LGF’s Cynical Bastard after this election.

You never were mate. Even I’m not the most cynical person here.

I suppose that will be an actual Libertarian Utopia on Mars where everything is owned by private hands ..and literally even your air can be turned off at will if you succeed in pissing off the owner.

Jeff Duntemann wrote a short story, “Cold Hands”. A man working at a lunar orbiting station has an accident and loses both hands. His employer pays for his prosthetics.

Soon afterwards, he’s embittered by his company, and he has a problem: The company owns the prosthetics…
