“You know, there are some words I’ve known since I was a schoolboy: ‘With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured… the first thought forbidden… the first freedom denied - chains us all irrevocably.’ Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie, as wisdom… and warning. The first time any man’s freedom is trodden on, we’re all damaged. -The Drumhead

In Judge Hanen’s no standing ruling he specifically mentioned election day drive up voting.
Texas law requires structures during early voting, but buildings on election day.
He stated that the drive up tents met the standard during early voting, but that he would not vote drive up on election day, and stated others shouldn’t.
So, he basically told Harris County, “Don’t do that”
Hopefully they were listening

There was a lot of rioting in the 1960’s, so while for you youngsters this may seem extreme, your parents and grandparents have seen this before.

IIRC, before my time but I think I’ve come across some historical recounting of the era, the early 20th century saw some large protests in the capitol. At that time the media was less likely to run investigative stories in police violence or the problems surrounding protests.

Republican Les Otten expected to be first in US to vote on Election Day, backing Biden

Dixville Notch selectman, Balsams Resort owner says Democratic former VP can unite nation

Millions of Americans have already made their choices for president, through absentee voting and in some states, early in-person voting.

But the first votes in the nation to be cast on Election Day and then immediately counted will be in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. Nearby Millfield will also be voting at midnight.

Dixville Notch will continue its 60-year midnight voting tradition — started in the 1960 presidential election. As usual, the event is expected to draw national attention.

The first of the five registered Dixville Notch voters to cast a ballot, which will most likely be the first Election Day vote in the nation, will be Les Otten, an owner and lead developer of the Balsams Resort.

Looks like Les has started a trend, may it become a landslide, an epic rout.

I’m with this. Especially given that the GOP is legislating in other areas to keep ballots that they intend to challenge physically separated from the ballots that they think they’re going to win. The Democrats have been playing it safe to limit the GOP’s avenues of appeal. No one on the left wants to see the GOP drag this out for one instant longer than possible.

Czech Republic has pretty liberal gun laws as well (by European standards). Anders Breivik traveled to Prague in an attempt to acquire weapons for his attack; local organized crime declined to sell him anything, suspecting - correctly, it turned out - that he was planning a terrorist attack. They notified the Czech police, but 5-0 dropped the ball and failed to notify their Norwegian counterparts.

OK, if Biden wins Texas, how likely is it that the Texas legislature splits the electoral votes for future elections?

Splitting the electoral votes… either proportionally or by congressional district would be bad for the Republicans generally going forward. Unless you think that Biden’s win in Texas this year would be like Clinton’s win in California in 1992 (meaning: the start of a trend not an outlier)

I think that still murders the GOP in Presidential elections since it’s a bloc they will never entirely get. Presumably they tie the votes to the representative districts like Nebraska does. Which then makes the gerrymandering of Texas all the more vital to the GOP.

I also think Biden winning Texas would be a bellwether for Democratic activity in the state since it would have shown that the GOP is vulnerable there.

Grandpa Bacon was involved with the Bonus Army march on Washington in the summer of 1932. WW1 veterans wanted cash redemption of their service certificates and they were met by MacArthur who met the marchers with tear gas and fixed bayonets. Grandpa said the Army then open fire on the marchers and a couple of them were killed. Mac Arthur then destroys the cam set up by the marchers.

That left Grandpa with a seething hatred of MacArthur and Patton.

Even with the (relative to the rest of Europe) liberal gun laws in Austria, I’d be surprised if this wasn’t obtained via Eastern European sourced black markets.

I’ve heard, but cannot verify that you can buy real (as in actually fully automatic, not semi-auto civilian lookalikes) AK-47s and AK-74s that are Warsaw Pact surplus in Western European black markets for around 1000 euro.

re: #136 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

The reason the networks like FoxNews and CNN push so much Trump is because they are in the entertainment business.

If you’ve watched TV ratings for several years, the marked change in cable TV ratings the past few years is hard to miss.

Specifically, the “news” (really entertainment shows, as Fox corporate admits) shows dominated the top 10 , often the top 20.

Years ago that was not the case. News shows languished often down in the pack of cable TV.

So yes, Trump is their clown, their TV-clown. The networks love him. The Trumpers watch Fox all day long. And CNN loves Trump whether they push him or bash him.

The interior minister, Karl Nehammer, said the suspect, who was shot dead by police nine minutes into the attack, was a 20-year-old man of North Macedonian origin who had been convicted last year for membership of Isis after being arrested on his way to Syria to join the group. The man, who also possessed an Austrian passport, was released early from a 22-month prison sentence in December.

Nehammer said he had been armed with an automatic rifle and a hand gun, as well as a machete, and that he had been wearing a fake suicide vest.

Nebraska had second straight record week for coronavirus deaths (Omaha World-Herald)

Rising cases of COVID-19 in Nebraska have begun translating to an increase in deaths.

Last week, Nebraska saw its second straight record week of deaths related to the novel coronavirus. The state recorded 55 deaths; that’s after logging 44 the week before.

Previously, the highest weekly death total had been 30, which occurred once in early June and again in early September.

Over the course of the pandemic and through Saturday, Nebraska has recorded 646 COVID-19 deaths, according to data compiled by the COVID Tracking Project.

Last week’s increase in deaths, which lag new cases of the virus by several weeks, came as the state tallied its fifth straight record week for new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

Moving the dial to “severe” means shutdowns, which Gov. Ameritrade doesn’t want.

The Panhandle is not yet getting a break from an increase in coronavirus cases. Panhandle Public Health District officials said case numbers continue to get higher and higher.

During Monday’s briefing, PPHD reported 534 new cases of COVID-19 in the Panhandle. Currently, there are 1,241 active cases in the 12 counties covered by the Panhandle Health District.

Scotts Bluff County reported a whopping 378 new cases. Other counties, in order of case level, are: Dawes, 34; Box Butte, 28; Cheyenne, 26; Morrill, 23; Sheridan, 19; Kimball, 11; Garden, 9; Deuel, 4; Sioux, 1; Grant, 1. With so many cases, officials didn’t break out cases among adults and children due to time constraints as officials focus on contact tracing. Fifty-five percent of the cases reported Monday still remained under investigation, but close contact remained the top source of cases, with 26% of cases. Eighteen percent of cases were reported to be community spread.

That’s probably only if he loses. The Bank will support him if he wins. We’ve already seen the Trump/GOP health care plan:

#GOPDontCare

They don’t care about pandemic prevention.
They don’t care about about public health.
They don’t care about the death toll so far - 300,000+ excess deaths.
They don’t care about a health care delivery system that is at the breaking point due to the refusal to mask/social distance nationwide (virus doesn’t care about political party, affiliations, political boundaries/borders.

They don’t care about anything except shifting the burdens from millionaires to everyone else - especially those least able to endure them.

I’m not disagreeing with you but that case was ruled appropriately because the rules on drive in voting says “building” and it’s better to shut it down than have people vote in tents and then have those votes eliminated. They can fix the wording if Dems manage to take the legislature.

Republicans suck and I’m hoping enough Republicans in TX see this and push back while voting today.

Early-bird voters came in droves to polling sites across the Big Apple Tuesday, forming long lines and waiting hours to cast their ballots.

In Astoria, the busiest polling site in Queens, the queue of voters snaked three-and-a-half blocks around PS 85.

Daniel Bartunek, 40, arrived just before 6 a.m. and waited nearly 90 minutes to cast his vote.

“This is insane. Four years ago, you almost got right in,” he said. “Thank God I got here early. There should be more locations.”

Unfu…. nope. Totally fucking believable.

Junior is dumber than a bag of hammers. He actually thinks this is a good thing - siding the US with Russia and putting NY, CA, and Mexico as the “blue states”.

The alt-reality is strong with the Trumpists.

It’s not alt-reality, it’s trolling. Because that’s a perfectly cromulent thing for a nepotism hire in the White House who is supposed to be managing a blind trust to do on our taxpayer dime.

To be honest, before 2016, she was a steady dem, she volunteered, etc. But she had some falling out regarding Hillary. I told her 4 years ago that she was making a big mistake, after about a year, she realized it. She can be a bit manic at times, and she wasn’t in a great place back then. But she has been a big donor to many dem candidates in the last few years, so she has redeemed herself.

My neighbor across the street voted for Trump because she was punishing Obama for the ACA.

She’s a mom, has a young daughter, yet was so angry that the Black man made it marginally easier for the poor to see a doctor, she went with the guy who boasts about assaulting women.

I think she’s in her 30’s, which is why I always roll my eyes at the “Millennials will help the GOP go extinct” proclamations I hear. All of my cousins’ kids are in their mid-30s with kids of their own now, and a good chunk of them would be more than happy to see slavery come back.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that her husband suddenly went blind in one eye, completely out of the blue. Curious to see what her take on seeing pre-exsisting conditions going away are.

For the life of me, I will never understand this mindset.

I mean, for fuck’s sake, your boss works for a Silicon Valley company. I have to imagine she’s vaguely familiar with Google?

…….

Google gets you access to a lot of “information” — but it doesn’t distinguish between facts and lies, truth and conspiracy theories, speculation and proven reality.

In 2016, the MSM did a disservice to this nation by constantly stressing Hillary’s emails and giving Trump a free platform to spread his lies and propaganda. Trump also could be very effective when he wasn’t demeaning minorities, women, the disabled, war heroes — he spread the same populist message as Bernie. The MSM did not want to do the heavy lifting to uncover and publish Trump’s many financial imbroglios. And they did not harp on Trump’s failure to provide his tax returns; you can be sure that if Hillary had refused, it would have been a daily topic.

I don’t honestly care about them sending the DHS thug squads to DC.

If they had them out all around the country to try to sabotage the election counting, that would be a problem. If they sent them into the cities to start fights (really this would have had to be over the last week) to make things look bad to drive red turnout, that would be a problem.

Keeping Trump’s little party in the WH safe? Meh, whatever. That doesn’t actually affect the election.

My charitable take on my various acquaintances in their 40s and 50s still voting for Trump or a libertarian in this election is that they are solidly in the “Fuck you, I got mine” territory and basing their vote strictly on fear of higher taxes, government interference with “their rights”, and/or religious conservatism (justifying the latter around anti-abortion since they appear to ignore all the other Christian philosophy about caring for the poor, etc.)

That they’ve ignored or accepted four years of blatant corruption, graft, erosion of national institutions, and police violence has led me to greatly doubt their integrity and character. Things went well beyond “both sides do it” and I’ll be downright sarcastic when one of them trots out that justification.*

Feline overlord side eye - what sort of excuse is that???

That was when the networks had figured that it was cheaper just to get an unpaid intern to mine the Internet for what was #trendingontwitter than to actually pay reporters to uncover and discover

whereupon people like Drudge and Breitbart realized that once you floated a story out there long enough, regardless of its merits, it would get picked up by the MSM because it was #ToT

That was the basis for the #HunterBidenLaptop story and it was a major spoke in their wheels when Twitter finally put a filter on their manure spreader.

On Tuesday morning, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warned local voters about a suspicious text message making the rounds that sought to sow confusion about the voting process. The text said a “typographical error” meant that people who are “intending on voting for Joe Biden” instead had to select President Trump, and vice versa. The text, which Nessel’s office shared with The Washington Post, attributed the information to the “Federal Berue [sic] of Investigation.”

and I started reading the linked complaint. Apparently this guy was selling a “drop in auto sear” which makes a gun into a machine gun. (No, obviously I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about here.) He tried to disguise his business as selling “portable wall hangers.”

Pages 3-5 of the complaint associate the defendant with the Boogaloo movement, calls it a right wing movement but note that it has mixed views on race. I’m about 10 pages in but *boy*.

Drop in sears? Oy, ATF will go bugnuts on him. IF he’s lucky, he’ll only get 10 years in Club Fed.

Any customers of his? Same thing. Simply POSSESSING the parts (possessive construction according to ATF) is the same as owning a ready to shoot unregistered and untaxed full auto firearm. Another 10 year vacation.

Now I don’t know AR’s as well as some other weapons, but they should be slightly different than the original Armalite/Colt lowers so that the parts can’t just drop in without gunsmithing. However, his parts may be different than milspec to get around that.
