Refreshingly normal interview just now on Today by Jenna Bush (!!!) of incoming First Daughter Ashley Biden, who’s kept a low profile until now. She’s doing an interview tomorrow with Joe’s three (four?) granddaughters. Yes another day I’ll snark about the Bush family’s talent for self-preservation; today it was nice. And Ashley seems wonderful, with a career in social work. She got off a good line about not taking a job in the administration.

re: #10 The Pie Overlord!

This is the kind of batcrap insanity we’re expecting from right wing lunatics from now on. Who cares about the law, rules, policy, or facts. These fuckers are going to spew these suits endlessly all while inciting their base to violence over the legitimacy of elections that they lose fair and square.

The GOP have made it explicitly clear that they will not accept elections when they lose. They revert to the claim that the only way Democrats can win is if they cheat - all while GOPers are the ones doing the actual crimes (like Trump, Graham, and others pressuring state officials to overthrow the elections to give Trump a win in places he clearly lost multiple times based on the original vote, the recount, audits, etc.).

GOPers predisposed to this crap will succeed in a favorable environment - and the GOP is trying to get us to that point. The GOP can win only when they suppress turnout and their efforts to roll back mail in balloting and other pandemic measures shows how committed they are to stripping rights of people to vote.

Hope Biden and Democrats move to reinstate VRA and strengthen election laws to make it easier to vote nationwide; setting national standards for mail in balloting - so that localities can count votes within the week of the election; paper trails; etc. enforcing access to ballots to eliminate the long lines seen in many localities; and strengthening the penalties for violating election law.

Easy peasy! Under the tax code left by Clinton, we appeared to be on the way to reducing our national debt. So reinstate the Clinton tax code! Ok, ok — probably needs a few changes to reduce tax burden on those who are not wealthy — and maybe other adjustments so that certain taxes better reflect COLA.

The proposed Secretary of State is American born — Yonkers, New York. But everything depends on Harris being sworn in and Schumer becoming Senate Majority Leader. At which point Leahy will be next in line to the presidency after Pelosi.

Huffpo

An 18-year veteran police officer, currently with the Houston Police Department stormed the U.S. Capitol and then tried to cover his tracks by deleting photos from inside the rotunda and lying about his conduct, federal authorities said Tuesday.

Tam Dinh Pham, a resident of Richmond, Texas, is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and violence entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

The feds said in an affidavit that Pham at first denied that he went into the Capitol building in a Jan. 12 interview about his activities on Jan. 6. But Pham apparently forgot to clear the images completely off his phone, and the feds spotted them after they asked him to open his deleted images folder

I think this is a generational issue.

I’d honestly have thought a video entitled “Closing Time” was an interpretation of Semisonic’s song if I were to run across it on YouTube and not be aware going in that the artist had a different song by that title.

But then I entered the workforce right about when that song was getting its heaviest rotation on radio, and it was heavy even for a 90s “indie” hit.

I mean, that’s not entirely unusual… Clinton signed 140 pardons on January 20, 2001. And Obama pardoned 64 people on January 17, 2017, commuted 209 more the same day; and then commuted the sentence of 330 on January 19. 12 of GHW Bush’s pardons came on January 18.

It’s just one of those things that happens.

Or maybe someone said the wrong thing and he’s changed his mind. About some or all of them.

“You start out in 1954 by saying, “n*****, n*****, n*****.” By 1968 you can’t say “n*****”—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me—because obviously sitting around saying, “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “n*****, n*****.”

In recent admins, there’s been a trend to do this in the final days of the admin; but with Trump the question of who is seeking pardons and who Trump will pardon gets special scrutiny because of all the crime he and his cronies have engaged in.

Trump’s made it explicitly clear that he views pardons as how they benefit Trump personally - not how legit the merits of a specific pardon case are. Trump’s ignored the office of pardon attorney and directly issued pardons to his cronies, because he thinks it benefits Trump directly.

I am here to watch for the fallout when all these fuckers lose their 5A right to incriminate themselves and have to testify under oath or else face obstruction charges for interfering in ongoing investigations into misconduct by Trump (or they assert 5A rights on other crimes not covered).

You don’t get a pardon if you didn’t do a crime. Allocution means that they are admitting guilt to the crimes under Burdick (and yeah, that should still be a thing).

Yep. Doing the synonym or translation trick to conceal you’re still pushing the same old shit. Like, how “internationalism” has morphed into “globalism” (I leave as an exercise to the reader to figure out what it was before internationalism), cultural bolshevism to cultural marxism. Easy peasy! Under the tax code left by Clinton, we appeared to be on the way to reducing our national debt. So reinstate the Clinton tax code! Trump ‘spooked’ away from pardoning his children and pro-insurrection lawmakers: report

According to cnn.com, Trump along with Ivanka and Jared Kushner listened in as White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Eric Herschmann that the only way he could pardon himself, his family and the GOP members was if he listed out the crimes that were committed. Listing the crimes in the pardon would essentially give prosecutors a guide for how to charge the Trumps with state or civil crimes, which don’t fall under the pardon.

While it was something that Trump has discussed with his legal advisers along with former Attorney General Bill Barr, this time Trump finally got the message.

“The conversation spooked Trump in a way few others have,” CNN said, citing a person familiar with Trump’s reaction.

You sort of answered your own question: They’re not aiming to get more Repubs to the polls, they’re trying to keep more Dems away from the polls. What these past two elections proved to them is not only does making it easier to vote encourage greater voter turnout, but that even with record-breaking Repub turnout, they still lost the election because demographics simply are not on their side anymore.

What happened to the Israelis?
The Q-tards assured us back in December that 20,000 Israeli troops had massed “on the border” to spearhead the invasion (backed up by the Chinese).
Did they all go home after Hanukkah?

The thing about those gripes from the GA GOPer, though? While the proposed changes may indeed make it harder to vote, I don’t see where it is necessarily going to produce more votes for Republicans. Unless they are going on the assumption that Republicans will (famously) “crawl over broken glass” to vote for the GOP, while Democrats are more apathetic and more-easily discouraged? But in Georgia? After seeing what happened in 2020-21? A dubious theory, IMO.

Charlie Pierce on MLK Jr Day:

We Honor Dr. King By Acknowledging the Actual Messenger, and What His Message Actually Was
Martin Luther King, Jr. was as much a revolutionary as he was a conciliator—as much a revolutionary as Samuel Adams, or Denmark Vesey, or Michael Collins, or Gandhi, or Nelson Mandela.

Does the arc of the universe really bend toward justice? If it does, it takes God’s own sweet time doing it, and it has a tendency to turn back on itself like an old garden hose with multiple kinks and tangles that prevent the water from flowing. Right now, from the vantage point of the past two weeks, the arc of the universe seems to be faceless and random and extraordinarily unreliable, far too prone to manipulation by villains and lunatics, and by villainous lunatics, and by lunatic villains, all of whom can be American, as hard as we try in our arrogance and guilt to avoid thinking about that.

After the last month, I think it’s proper to honor Dr. King by being grim and purposeful, to appreciate the rhetoric but to appreciate the actual history more, to revere the message but to acknowledge the actual messenger and what his message actually was, to accept that Dr. King was as much a revolutionary as he was a conciliator, that he was as much a revolutionary as Samuel Adams, or Denmark Vesey, or Michael Collins, or Gandhi, or Nelson Mandela, and that his message differed from theirs only in its chosen delivery system. He saw a system corrupted by racism and savagery and he wanted to bring it down. He understood freedom better and more deeply than any Texas real-estate broker waving a Gadsden flag. He understood how true freedom is a bond, that freedom ties us all together rather than atomizing us into millions of tiny universes, which bend toward nothing at all.

There’s a popular movie review channel (Chris Stuckmann) that I like where the reviewer just spent an hour denouncing his Jehovah’s Witness upbringing and then came out as bi-sexual. This has really been a year for people coming to terms with things they’ve been suppressing for ages. Everyone has been at home thinking about their lives and now seems to be the time to try to make changes as we may be seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. It took me forever to accept that I was gay and finally come out so this was kind of heartening for me to watch.

And Charlie on the 1776 debacle:

Trump’s ‘Definitive Chronicle of the American Founding’ Is a Staggering Blizzard of Cockamamie Talking Points
Actual historians tore it to shreds.

The Declaration was a lot of things, most of them good, but if you’d stood up at the Second Continental Congress and announced that it was the beginning of a push to outlaw slavery, they’d have laughed you out onto Chestnut Street. Mainly, what the Declaration did was give British Tories and a number of other people in other countries a glaring hypocrisy through which they could dismiss everything else in the document. Samuel Johnson famously observed, “How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of negroes?” And Irish patriot Daniel O’Connell wasn’t fooled, either. “Liberty in America means the power to flog slaves,” O’Connell said, “and to work them for nothing.” I got that last quote from a real historian—Liam Hogan, an independent scholar of slavery from Limerick in Ireland. There’s more truth in that one sentence than in the whole of this spurious mess produced on our dime.

nonsense

i’ve said it enough so it should be clear
the only ‘announcement’ that matters is the one after all the votes are counted.
anything intermediate is meaningless
because the order the votes are counted is meaningless
only the final total matters - whenever that happens.

yeah, you know which precincts havent reported and how they’ve swung in the past and should this time and absentees and military and on and on.
it’s still guessing.

nevertheless
nate et al spent a year or more prognosticating what was going to happen in each state.
there are maps. everywhere.
all of a sudden you can’t do that on election night?

ok, well if you’re reporting what happened, then my above stands
not a word until the last vote is counted - which will not be election night

if you’re still predicting, then there can be no such thing as ‘too early’

however, if you want to walk this fine line of we’re not predicting but projecting, then it’s time to stop this election night horse race nonsense and reveal it for what it is - a senseless exercise in nothing of substance.

the order the votes are counted and the breathless intermediate reporting updates are meaningless.

I’ll explain from what little I’ve heard of this insane theory.

They for some unhinged reason believe that Ulysses S. Grant was the last real president of the United States, and that after him the US was overthrown and is now controlled by 3 corporations. So they believe that what trump will do is overthrow the false corporation american government and reestablish the real america, thus becoming the first legitimate president since Grant.

Shit like this is why I have so little hope that any Q believer can ever be deprogrammed. Believing this is so detached from reality that most will never find it again.

Okay, so that’s straight from the Reichsbürger playbook (along with the so-called “Soviet citizens”). The “this state is actually a corporation/firm” is common to all three.

Yes, drones are becoming a significant factor in war. Although not in the way the movie clip shows them.

In November, Azerbaijan went back to war with the Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. Previously, the Armenians had significant military superiority over the Azeris.

But this time, the Turks aided the Azeris with drones, among other things. The Azeris, using those drones, quickly and decisively defeated the Armenians within a couple of weeks.

(Turkey is supporting Turkic speaking groups as an outreach towards being a significant regional power.)

re: #362 thecommodore

I’m not nearly as focused on who gets the pardon as what it will mean for Trump to pardon any one particular person.

Pardon someone, and they can’t declare 5A as to that crime, which means they would have to testify or else face new charges of obstruction. Testify as to what they did/knew about Trump - and you get more crimes against Trump.

That’s why pardoning Jared, Ivanka, Junior, Eric are less likely.

Trump might not pardon his inner circle for same reasons. But he might pardon those where he thinks he can get something back in return.

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a letter to the editor with footnotes in this paper.

Opinion: Senator Ron Johnson calls editorial about him ‘unhinged and uninformed.’ The Editorial Board responds.

I hope Ron Johnson has a tub of aloe handy: those footnotes are as third-degree a burn as I’ve seen in a while….

re: #367 lawhawk

What is surprising me most about Trump’s possible pardons is that he apparently isn’t going full steam ahead with omnibus pardons for himself and everyone else. Since when do the crimes being pardoned actually have to be identified in the pardon?

That certainly wasn’t the case for Ford’s pardon of Nixon, which I had assumed Trump would use as his template for everything.

That truly was delightful to read. This should become standard operating procedure for all media vs. all politicians. The difference in substantive footnotes vs. Republicans and vs. Democrats would be staggering.

They heard that plotters being kicked off of social media talked about moving to ham radio.

The hams in my circles are bitching. It’s never them, it’s “those people”. A LOT of hams are wingnuts.

I would’ve assumed it was more libertarians, as ham radio sounds like a hobby right up their alley. Not that there isn’t some overlap.

I’m finding in my experience that when you move to DMR or D-STAR or one of the new digital modes in Ham Radio, the crusty old wingnut conspiracy theorists concentration seems to be reduced.

I use FT8. Less politics. But I do monitor 80 meters after dark to keep tabs on the wingnuts.

Did the gales of November come really, really, really early?

The ones that blew Trump out of office arrived just as scheduled.
