Martha Redbone: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 24,096

YouTube

The description doesn’t mention it, but the lyrics of the first song are taken from William Blake’s poem “The Garden of Love.”

Every January, I attend globalFEST at a New York City nightclub and see some of the most fantastic music I’ll experience all year. Now, given the pandemic’s challenges and the hardening of international borders, NPR Music and globalFEST moved the 2021 edition from the nightclub to your screen of choice and shared the festival with the world. We called it Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST. We presented 16 artists in intimate settings (often behind desks donning globes), all hosted by African superstar Angélique Kidjo.

Martha Redbone performs her Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST performance from her home studio in Brooklyn’s Navy Yards. Native and African-American singer-songwriter Martha Redbone is known for her mix of folk, blues and gospel from her childhood in Harlan County, Ky., which she infuses with the eclectic grit of pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting the powerful vocal range of her gospel-singing African-American father and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Cherokee, Shawnee and Choctaw culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music.

I think I’ve got the bugs out of the LGF custom embedded tweet function now. I started doing this to solve a crashing problem with Twitter’s “official” embedding function, but it’s ended up being a great improvement to the comment section overall.

I think this description of a tankie by an ex-tankie gets at what partly motivates Glenn Greenwald.

She depicts tankism as an ideology defined fundamentally by anti-Americanism. She describes a process by which people with some justifiable anger against America — due to its treatment of minorities or overseas military actions — slip into a deep and monomaniacal hatred in which America defines evil and anything that opposes America is defined as good.

re: #22 No Malarkey!

He didn’t actually. He defended militia members, not Mcveigh or his actions.

And he was wrong.

“Many of the people populating these movements are not radical, right-wing, pro-assault weapons freaks as they were originally stereotyped,” Hawley wrote two months after the bombing.

He argued that middle class Americans had gravitated to anti-government organizations out of genuine concerns about federal overreach and a disillusionment with mainstream politics.

“Dismissed by the media and treated with disdain by their elected leaders, these citizens come together and form groups that often draw more media fire as anti-government hate gatherings,” Hawley said.

These WERE anti-government hate gatherings, leading directly to what we’re seeing today.

So the Bills-Chiefs game is winding down, and it’s looking like it’ll be a shootout between Tom “Fucking Cheater” Brady and Patrick Mahomes in Tampa Bay for the Superb Owl. That might actually be a pretty good game. I would still rather have seen Aaron Rodgers, but that’s partially my favoritism for the dude and partially my hatred for that evil sportsballer from Foxborough.

I read David Niewert’s long thread on Glenn Greenwald and he is far worse than anything I imagined. Let’s not give Glenn any credit — he represented Matt Hale the racist monster in his efforts to obtain a license to practice law in Illinois. There was no evidence that Glenn had any compassion for the minorities that Matt and his disciples targeted. He seems more supportive of white supremacist organizations than groups who combatted them. His frequent appearance on Tucker Carlson should disabuse anyone of the notion that his opinions deserve a second thought.

Shame that Rogers’ coach took the ball out of his hands.

Yeah, I wasn’t following it super closely, but I saw that Brady threw 3 INT’s and wondered how in the ever-loving hell they didn’t get punished for that. It was a one-score game through the majority of the second half, and you can’t tell me that giving Rodgers - a first-ballot Hall of Famer if I ever saw one - the ball in that situation wouldn’t end in a win.

I was a coordinator for an immersion East Asian Language program at a university when Ben Smith, a mentee of Hale, shot a Korean grad student as he and fellow Korean Christians were leaving church one summer Sunday about 5 blocks from the dormitory where all of the students I was responsible for were staying. In the weeks after I kept finding neo-Nazi flyers around the area. FK Glenn.

Who helped Biden get the most votes in history?

On Election Day, Donald Trump won 74 million votes — 11 million more than in 2016. But Joe Biden accomplished a considerably more impressive feat: he attracted 81 million votes, 15 million more than Hillary Clinton did in 2016.

Who were the Biden Democrats? An examination of the data reveals surprising patterns — and foreshadows a new direction for the Democratic Party.

Biden built on Clinton’s strong performances in major metro areas. In the largest metros — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, etc. — he exceeded her total by 3.8 million votes. In other metros, such as Phoenix, Minneapolis, Baltimore and Pittsburgh, he added another six million votes.

Clinton’s strong performances in these metros was enough to win her the popular vote. But Biden’s improvements allowed him to win the electoral college, pad his popular vote total and chart a new course for the party.

Article contains charts and it really looks like pursuing urban voters is more promising that pursuing white working class rural voters, as has been pushed by all those cletus safaris. It doesn’t blow off the fact that he improved with those WWC voters, but they would not have been enough to beat Trump. It was the big metro areas that really did it.

Just looked out the window at work to where my truck is parked. It’s tilted… wrong. I walk out and look and yep, my spare is flat. We have a air pump here at work so I can get it pumped up in the morning but with only 2 dollars in my bank account till Friday, I’m screwed. I’ll call the farm supply store and order 2 tires (my front ones) when I get home and hopefully they’ll have them on Friday payday. In the meantime it’ll be interesting to see if/how I can keep it pumped up till then.

Which is still about poverty level, actually. Unless you live rent free, eat like a bird, your insurance premiums are pennies on the dollar and your car is paid for and and and… That ain’t much money. But it’s a step in the right direction for a lot of people having the shit exploited out of them. We’re talking a lot of people.

I just saw this comment at a photo site. Damn good idea in my book…

If minimum wage is $600 per week — what if a person is working 60 hours? Or if a person is truly a part-time worker? My niece works 2 days per week; while her children are young, she has no interest in putting in more hours. The economy is a disaster right now and it won’t recover until the disease is under control. The government needs to throw a lifeline to those who are struggling — and needs to raise taxes on the more affluent.
