re: #401 Dr. Matt

This is very enlightening. I didn’t realize 1) the proud boys were the ones to break down that barrier and 2) that was going on during Donnie’s speech. I thought all the clashes occurred after his rant was complete. Interesting and damning evidence.

***

Lawmakers in Canada’s House of Commons voted unanimously on Monday to classify the extremist far-right group Proud Boys as a white supremacist terrorist organization.

Canadians begin considering labeling Proud Boys as a terrorist group following the riot at the U.S. Capitol in January. A member of the Florida chapter of the Proud Boys was arrested on Wednesday on charges connected to his participation in the riot. Canadian Parliament member Jagmeet Singh introduced the proposal to classify the Proud Boys as a terrorist group on Monday.

Singh said that all parties had agreed to provide unanimous consent to the motion, which called on the Canadian government to “use all of available tools to address the proliferation of white supremacists and hate groups, starting with the immediate designating Proud Boys as a terrorist entity.”

O say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave..  Jan 26, 2021 • 11:28:42am

I’ve been hanging out rather passively today, because I’ve been doing a lot of networking reconfiguration. For the past few months, I’ve noticed unacceptable latency when trying to play games with my friends from my console upstairs in the bedroom, which is also the furthest away from the router. I tried adding a wireless extender into the loop, to no avail; so signal strength wasn’t the problem. The router and modem were both new. Eventually, after a couple of Mondays spent intensively flipping switches, I discovered the culprit: My router’s firmware had a broken traffic prioritization implementation. I replaced the firmware with a Linux-based solution, configured a proper QoS stack, and now all the various networked devices in my home are much happier.

Trump not only incited the riot, evidence appears to show his administration took deliberate steps beforehand to worsen it.

This was an outright attack on the United States.

The commander of the D.C. National Guard said the Pentagon restricted his authority ahead of the riot at the U.S. Capitol, requiring higher level sign-off to respond that cost time as the events that day spiraled out of control,” the Washington Post reports.

“Local commanders typically have the power to take military action on their own to save lives or prevent significant property damage in an urgent situation when there isn’t enough time to obtain approval from headquarters.”

“But Maj. Gen. William J. Walker, the commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard, said the Pentagon essentially took that power and other authorities away from him ahead of a pro-Trump protest on Jan. 6. That meant he couldn’t immediately roll out troops when he received a panicked phone call from the Capitol Police chief warning that rioters were about to enter the U.S. Capitol

I don’t know how topless photos of a daughter wind up anywhere they can be hacked from her parent’s devices, but… Never occurred to me to have nude-ish photos of my kid I could use to blackmail them into some sort of compliance. Who would even? It’s nuts.

The supermarket where I picked up supplies this morning has had its liquor license suspended. They have stocked the shelves with paper products instead. The locked shelves (still locked, I checked) have the toilet paper.

This seems like a weird complaint of Biden:

Ultimately, I thought his candidacy was simply a reflection of vanity. He didn’t really want to put in the work that being president after Trump would require; the presidency was simply the last notch that he wanted to be able to etch onto his political bedpost.

He seems like the least vain politician in American politics in my life time. Sure, you have to be somewhat vain to run for office, let alone the presidency, but relatively speaking, “vain” isn’t a term I’d throw at Biden.

Otherwise, it’s hard to complain about the points she raises.

There are areas of disagreement between Biden and progressives, to be sure. Progressives want universal health care (although there’s plenty of fighting on how to do it). A growing number of progressives want Biden to wipe out student debt entirely. And almost every progressive wants that $2,000 stimulus check and to make those checks retroactive to the beginning of the pandemic.

I want all of those things. I also want Biden to unpack the courts by expanding the federal judiciary and adding as many as 20 new justices to the Supreme Court. (If that sounds bonkers, read Elie Mystal’s take on it in the Nation—he’ll make a believer out of you.) And it is practically a foregone conclusion that progressives, particularly anti-imperialist progressives, are going to find much of Biden’s foreign policy to be immoral. That’s the nature of being anti-war in an imperialist country that traffics in death and destruction in the Global South.

He might have some control over the federal student loan part, but the rest of it, the writer needs to be told, is up to Congress, not Biden.

The problem is that the MAGA-heads ARE the GOP base now. Alienate them (by voting against their God-King) and the GOP Senators risk losing their re-election bids.

It’s not about protecting Trump (well okay, it’s not ONLY about protecting Trump), it’s about saving their own asses.

A profile of Manchin: washingtonpost.com

John Cole’s takeaway:

Again, there are a few things you need to know about Manchin to understand him.
1.) He honestly, truly, 100% believes that the key to anything is negotiation. He came up in the good ole boy/girl system and totally thinks that there is nothing that can not be accomplished after you build the right relationships.
2.) He will always have as his primary focus getting money and jobs to WV.
3.) He knows that WV is a small state and that things like the filibuster give us outsized political power, and he is not going to give it up.
He can be infuriating, but this is who he is. At least he is open about it.

Conviction needs 67 votes.

If conviction happens, which I agree is looking highly unlikely, it’s a majority vote to bar him from holding future office. I expect that would be a 51 or 52 vote situation with Romney and maybe Murkowski joining the Dems.

On the earlier discussion about doubling up masks -

From the Washington Post Coronavirus Update News letter:

Today’s answer comes from Allyson Chiu, The Post’s wellness reporter, who smartly noticed that many readers (and even some of her colleagues) were asking about the rising double mask phenomenon.

[snip]

Monica Gandhi, a professor of medicine and an infectious-disease expert at the University of California at San Francisco, suggests doubling up on face coverings if you are spending time indoors in crowded spaces or in areas where transmission rates are high. People who are medically vulnerable should also consider layering their masks, she says.

[snip]

The purpose of wearing two masks is to improve fit and filtration, Gandhi says. And if the masks are layered properly, they can closely simulate the effectiveness of an N95 respirator, which many experts consider to be the gold standard.

Option 1: Wear a tightly fitted, multiple-layer cloth covering over a surgical mask. “The non-woven polypropylene material of the surgical mask is electrostatically repulsing the virus and then the cloth mask literally forms a physical barrier with fibers going every which way,” Gandhi says.

Gandhi says she does not recommend putting a cloth mask over an N95. “An N95 is as good as it gets,” she says.

Option 2: Wear a three-layer mask with tightly woven fabric outer layers sandwiching a middle layer made out of a “nonwoven high-efficiency filter material,” such as a vacuum bag filter, the article states. The filter material will act similarly to a surgical mask or other medical-grade covering, Gandhi says.

and their article:
FAQ: Single or double? The latest advice on masks and covid.

Edited to add where I had removed article paragraphs. I usually add OpenAngle-Bracket SNIP CloseAngleBracket. But the display code apparently does not display this. So I change to SquareBracket instead. Lets see if that displays.

That’s because wingnuts write letters like this (at the Omaha World-Herald)

In my almost 80 years I have found that when Democrats don’t have a good argument, they always call Republicans every name in the book but, mostly, racist; they love that word. And now they want to send all 75 million Trump voters to reeducation camps. Kind of makes you think of China or Russia, doesn’t it?

It amazes me that President Trump was able to get anything done while having to fight Democrats, the MSM, social media, the deep state and even RINOs.

I just read an article where this person felt God would intervene at the last minute to save America. I disagreed. I believe this nation has left God out far too long, and now it’s payback time. I just hope he gives us a reprieve in four years and doesn’t make us wait 40 years as he did his people after they left Egypt or, worse, let us wait 400 years as he did to his people when conquered by the Babylonians. Marcus: “What are your chances of winning?”

Appeals Court: Boston Does Not Have to Allow a Christian Flag Outside City Hall (Friendly Atheist)

The First Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the city of Boston was within its rights to reject the flying of a Christian flag outside City Hall Plaza.

Some background: Harold Shurtleff is the director and co-founder of Camp Constitution, a non-profit group that promotes the idea that we live in a “Christian nation.” (He’s wrong.) In 2017, Shurtleff applied for a permit to raise a Christian flag on a pole outside City Hall Plaza to commemorate “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day”… but the city of Boston rejected the request.

Shurtleff contended this was religious discrimination even if the same rules prohibited atheist flags from going up. He said there were plenty of other flags with religious symbols that the city put up, including the national flag for Portugal — which includes a religious symbol — during the city’s Portuguese-American festival. The city even acknowledged that significance on its website at the time. Plus, the city flag for Boston includes a Latin phrase that translates to “God be with us as he was with our fathers.”

It must be clear by now that modern Republicanism desires the USA’s traditional notions of justice to fail and for the country itself to fall. They more or less openly want a failed state.

Democrats must proceed with Impeachment and prosecution of all other secessionists and let it be known that this and other current Trump criminal activity are considered an existential crisis to the United States. It is important that the severity of our current crisis is made clear to all Americans and goes way beyond Democrats wanting to score simple political points.

Modern Republicans want nothing to do with traditional democracy. In their failed state fever dreams with the USA’s absence they want a feudal society locally ruled by Evangelical Christian hucksters who use fake phony Libertarian talking points as wall paper. In reality it would be a corrupt kleptocracy along the lines of current Russia ruled by warlord oligarchs and a central dictator.

The Christian Flag is a white field with a blue canton, within which is a red Latin Cross.

There is also a Christian Anthem for that flag, and a Christian Pledge of Allegiance.

The flag was developed in 1897, intended to represent ecumenism between Christian churches, and adopted by forerunner of the National Council of Churches in 1943.

That organisation has also adopted display criteria for the flag when it is in a church, displacing the US Flag from its position of honour as set forth in the Flag Code.

Roman Catholic churches usually do not use this flag, as they display the flag of the Holy See (but they follow the US Flag Code).

I like the trends in AZ, GA and TX, of course, but the GOP is making inroads in the midwest. E.g., OH is behind the GOP’s iron curtain these days.

GOP state governments that deliberately fail and fuck things up (but blame it all on the Democrats) are the obvious way for the GOP to make new red states. That contemptible strategy is likely to work well in the rust belt.

I was familiar with the Holy See’s flag due to my interest in politics and geography, but I never saw one until I went to the Holy See myself.

The only other place I’ve seen one is a little desk flag, and in the Catholic Church in Bridgeport (I was there for a funeral, not getting religion).

I find the idea of national flags on the dais of a church somewhat upsetting, as the imagery mixes State and Church (which I imagine is the idea).

Anti-Mask Pastor Tells Judge She “Ruled Against God” After Another Legal Setback (Friendly Atheist)

That would be Louisiana pastor Tony Spell.

That guy is still in trouble with the law. Yesterday, a judge denied his motion to dismiss the six criminal counts he faces — and he didn’t even get that news directly from her. He had to hear it from his lawyer outside the building, because he wasn’t allowed inside, because he chose not to wear a mask, because he’s a professional Christian asshole.

“You just ruled against God,” Spell said outside the 19th Judicial District courthouse. “Get ready for the judgment of God.”

Dozens from his flock joined him outside the building — where they eschewed masks, held American flags and wore T-shirts in support of “free breathing.”

“We will never comply, and we will always resist,” Spell said. “We will always stand up for the word of God and the First Amendment of the United States.”

420,000 people have died from COVID, many of them because of Christians like Spell who refuse to take even the most basic of precautions because they’re too arrogant to think about anybody else. Spell deserves the prison time he faces if convicted of these charges,

Pat Leahy is the only Democrat Vermont has ever sent to the Senate since 1791

There were a couple Democratic-Republicans back in the day but even then it was mostly Federalists and Whigs

Jim Jeffords was the last Republican Senator from Vermont, re-elected in 2000. Then left the party to serve as an Independent, after His fellow GOP Senators refused to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
He did not run for re-election in 2006

re: #260 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀 No Capt’n😷Trips

True, but also misleading.

Vermont underwent a big, big shift in its national politics only in the last 30 years or so. Until it voted for Clinton in 1992, the only Democrat who’d ever gotten Vermont’s EVs was LBJ in his 1964 landslide. From 1992 on, Republicans haven’t had a chance at Vermont’s EVs at all.

And since Leahy has held his seat since 1975 and Sanders since 2009, there hasn’t been much opportunity for Senate elections that reflect that transition in how Vermont votes.

It’s equally correct to say that the last time Vermont elected a new Republican to federal office was in 1989 when moderate Rs Jim Jeffords and Peter Smith were elected to the Senate and House, respectively. And that the last time a Republican won federal election in Vermont, period, was when Jeffords was reelected in 2000 - and then he left the party a year later to serve out the rest of his term as an independent.

I think the most practical path forward is massive expansion of representation. 21 SCOTUS justices representing 21 circuits. A House of 1200 or so. The Senate, as ever, is more intractable. Could you make a case for 4 or 5 Senators per state? Maybe, though you’d need an amendment to the Constitution that’s probably impossible.

All late stuff added when the apocalypse failed to happen and getting along with Rome had more survival value than Paul’s much more radical teachings about No Jew or Greek, male or female. Similar disconnects between eras abound in the books of the New Testament, from the earlist book (1 Thessalonians) to the last in the canon (Titus or 1 Peter depending on who you agree with, long after Peter and Paul were dead).

I’d like to see 1 senator per 5 million population, with 2 minimum. Wyoming will still have 2, but California will have 8. Most states would remain unchanged, but California, Texas, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan would stop being royally screwed by the Senate. It’s an Amendment that would probably never pass either.

21 Districts and 21 SCOTUS justices is… “A touch much” don’t you think? 13 is probably the best to match one to one per Federal district.

Kathy Baldock is an evangelical Christian who also happens to support LGBTQ rights. As she explains on her personal ministry’s website, that required a major shift in her thinking a while back, but she’s been trying to make amends for it ever since.

One of the ways she’s done that is by offering honest, thorough reviews of anti-LGBTQ books written by fellow Christians on Amazon. She knows their tricks. She knows how they misuse the Clobber Verses. She knows that a lot of these authors “lack personal experience” with Christians who are LGBTQ. So she points out all these flaws in their books — in a place where their potential readers can see them.

The reviews are never just rants. She purchases the books herself, reads them carefully, then highlights the problems in great detail. It’s exactly what you would want from a review. As she told me yesterday, “I counter the misinformation with truth and research. Then I write and rewrite.”

And then, a month ago, on Christmas, all of her reviews were taken down from Amazon.

She was also told she would not be permitted to post any reviews in the future, either. The reason? The company told her via email that she had repeatedly violated their guidelines… without explaining what rule(s) she violated.

Why Did Amazon Remove Reviews of Anti-LGBTQ Books from This Pro-LGBTQ Christian? (Friendly Atheist)

For the same reason atheists get booted from social media. “Blasphemy” is treated as “hate speech.” A Christian writing a thoughtful critique of a Christian bigot has blasphemed and will be reported and removed.

You’d have to space out the SCOTUS expansion - maybe add a seat each year over the course of three presidential terms? And perhaps do the same with the new House seats being added, so they can’t be swung so hard by one particular bad year?

As for 21 circuits, there’s actually a good case to be made for that, given how overloaded some of the busiest circuits have become. The ninth alone should probably be split into four or five circuits given how much population it covers.

The system doesn’t work. It doesn’t work at all. The fact that the world’s largest political entity is almost a complete oligarchy where a single person can prevent the entire legislative process from occurring for years, and wildly shift the entire federal judiciary, without any checks, balances or consequences, isn’t a functional system. I just can’t imagine a House with 1200 Representatives. How could anything get accomplished? Every Representative would want to comment for the TV soundbites and have about 12 seconds to speak. We couldn’t afford to build enough facilities for all the prima donnas and their fancy offices.

I do not see anyway to get past the Constitutional barriers for these changes. Doing this change by Constitutional Amendment or Convention is just not possible.

We have to learn better to deal with what we have.

They don’t get in front of many cameras in the chamber. And there are places with larger bodies, such as New Hampshire. And changing the size of the House or the Supreme Court doesn’t require a Constitutional amendment, otherwise we wouldn’t be at 9 or 435.

Christian Flag (Wikipedia, history, examples, churches which use it [most Protestant ones], wording of pledges)

There is no “Jewish” flag but every synagogue (which includes Reform, Conservative, Young Israel & mainstream Chabad) I have ever attended displays the flag of Israel. There is also the Yellow Crown Flag of some rogue Chabad extremists & the “Na Nach” flag of the Breslovers.

“… Among the attendees, according to Herbster’s post, were Tuberville, former RAGA director Adam Piper, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Trump’s former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, adviser Peter Navarro, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and 2016 deputy campaign manager David Bossie.

RAGA’s dark-money fundraising arm, the Rule of Law Defense Fund, led by Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, paid for robocalls directing people to the March to Save America and rally, which took place just before the Capitol attack.”

The New Hampshire House of Representatives has four hundred representatives and they manage in that tiny state.

I’m fine with not quite so many: The least-populous state (currently Wyoming) gets one representative. All other districts are based on the population of that state.

Wyoming has 578,000 people. So that’s one district (as it is now).

California, with 39,000,000 people then gets sixty-seven representatives.

These Textbooks In Thousands Of K-12 Schools Echo Trump’s Talking Points (Huffington Post)

Their religion-centered, anti-Democrat, anti-science, anti-multicultural message mirrors the Christian nationalism seen at the U.S. Capitol riot.

Christian textbooks used in thousands of schools around the country teach that President Barack Obama helped spur destructive Black Lives Matter protests, that the Democrats’ choice of 2016 nominee Hillary Clinton reflected their focus on identity politics, and that President Donald Trump is the “fighter” Republicans want, a HuffPost analysis has found.

The analysis, which focused on three popular textbooks from two major publishers of Christian educational materials ― Abeka and BJU Press ― looked at how the books teach the Trump era of politics. We found that all three are characterized by a skewed version of history and a sense that the country is experiencing an urgent moral decline that can only be fixed by conservative Christian policies. Language used in the books overlaps with the rhetoric of Christian nationalism, often with overtones of nativism, militarism and racism as well.

Scholars say textbooks like these, with their alternate versions of history and emphasis on Christian national identity, represent one small part of the conditions that lead to events like last week’s riot at the U.S. Capitol, an episode that was permeated with the symbols of Christian nationalism. Before storming the Capitol, some groups prayed in the name of Jesus and asked for divine protection. They flew Christian and “Jesus 2020” flags and pointed to Trump’s presidency as the will of God. The linkage between Christian beliefs and the violent attack on Congress has since pushed evangelical leaders to confront their own relationship with Trump and their support for the rioters.

The size of the House is set by law. It can be changed without amending the Constitution.

re: #283 ipsos

I think the most practical path forward is massive expansion of representation. 21 SCOTUS justices representing 21 circuits. A House of 1200 or so. The Senate, as ever, is more intractable. Could you make a case for 4 or 5 Senators per state? Maybe, though you’d need an amendment to the Constitution that’s probably impossible.

Practical?

You’re forgetting that we don’t have enough votes for any bold legislation.
