I love how everything that is being cancelled is still readily available. Ben Shapiro was tweeting this morning about book burnings despite the complete lack of fires actually being lit.

This shit is just getting so tedious.

Yep, Faux Duperati, it isn’t the Deep State or the UN or BLM that has “canceled” these six Dr. Seuss books, it is the AUTHOR’s OWN COMPANY, the one he set up to look after his legacy.
There is a real trend toward Republicans trying to overrule the marketing decisions of private companies and force them to distribute political propaganda that they would otherwise reject. One yokel screech (former city councilman Todd Klein) publicly suggested that Facebook be “nationalized” (his word) so it wouldn’t “censor conservative views.”
Hmmm, I seem to remember a term for this, something from my youth. Oh, COMMUNISM, that’s it. No wonder KGB Putin and the Kremlin love them so much.

No sane person (that is, Democrat) would burn a book that could now be sold to a Repug mark for a ridiculously inflated price.

It’s communism when liberals nationalize something. It’s fascism when conservatives nationalize things.

Part of the Horseshoe Theory - underlying ideologies are very different, but the practical effects/day-to-day life of people living in the regime aren’t that different.

The Economist says the package is “one of the most popular bills in decades.”

Serious/not serious

What if Democrats passed a return to the marginal tax rates of the 1950s (somewhere around 90%), and then announced that Fred Flintstone was cancelled because of his sexist & racist rhetoric & treatment of fictional dinosaurs?

Which one would Fox News cover?

The marginal tax rates are complex, and the GOP seems capable only of fighting culture wars at this point, with no way to actually discuss complex policy initiatives.

What else could we get away with?

Hey GOP! Look over here! Us libs are wiping our asses with Confederate flags and smearing it on statues of Gen. Lee!

The books being pulled from publishing aren’t the “beloved classics” anyway. The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and literally every other title are still easy to find all over the place. Like these fucks care anyhow. Beyond collecting the now not to be published books for their Racist Asshole merch collections.

I had a whole bunch of Dr Seuss books here from when my son was a little dude. None of the now banned titles, but quite a collection along with other kid books my kid didn’t want to keep. I sent them to a family member on the husband’s side who has a son with developmental disabilities. He turned 7 a few weeks ago and was having trouble reading. Until Saturday. He read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish out loud to his mom and baby brother. Twice. His mom was so happy and he was adorably proud of himself.

Apparently, what the GOP has been yammering about is actually true, and all of our history textbooks have been taken over and rewritten by Communists to …

(*checks notes*)

… um, delete and obscure the role that Russians played in actually creating the civilizations in the Americas that were then taken over by Spain, England and France.

My Green Eggs and Ham confession, sort of

sometimes when i run, music swirls around in my head
its usually ear worms or snippets, rarely whole songs
they loop round and round

part 1
Angel Band’s “I’ll Sing This Song For You” is one of them
the right pace brings it up most of the time

part 2
we have two Dr Seuss throw pillows on our bed
i am reminded of “Green Eggs and Ham” every morning

the Angel Band song is just similar enough in structure to GEAH that when I run the words intermix - their tune, Seuss’s words

eventually i just start rhyming random stuff which goes on for mile after mile

it doesnt happen all the time - just enough to be fun without being intrusive

clearly serving size info on food packaging is political
keep the sizes down to keep the calories, or fat, or whatever down

im fine with that

my gripe is why the serving size is in some measure other than how the product comes.

i know - standardization and all - so grams, or ounces

except sometimes they have no problem with 6 crackers or 3 cookies, 1 slice of bread, or 1 bar, or 1/2 a can of soda

so why is the portion size of something like sliced meat or cheese NOT IN SLICES!!!!

grrrrr

I wore my Grinch mask to the grocery store this morning. Sigh.

After perpetuating the “no good deed goes unpunished” axiom by letting a lady with a few items go ahead of me, only to have her checkout last ten minutes as they price-checked or re-calibrated all of her items or whatever, I finally get to the cashier.

She says, “I see you’re wearing a Grinch mask. Can you believe they banned Dr. Seuss books?”

I reply, “They didn’t ban them. The Seuss foundation pulled them from publication.”

She responds, “Well, I saw it on the news.”

I, laughing, respond, “You must be watching the wrong news stations.”

Cashier, for some reason, says, “Well, I don’t watch CNN. But the books are banned.”

Me—“No, they’re not banned. That implies a government action. They were pulled by the foundation because they had some racist, offensive illustrations.”

(now, I just want to get the hell out of the store, but she goes on…)

Cashier—“Everyone’s offended by everything. Are you offended by those illustrations?”

Me—“Not personally, but I’m not in the groups depicted.”

Her—“Well, I’m Jewish.”

Me—“So am I.”

Her—“Well, they shouldn’t have banned Dr. Seuss.”

What a way to start the day.

The two whales on which Fomenkism rests:

1. Bible-Codish abuse of statistics, finding allegedly improbable coincidences in kingship succession chains.

2. Abuse of the astronomical data from the Almagest, ignoring the fact that - obviously - the numbers in the book were updated throughout the centuries, otherwise it would have had no use.

The authors engage in creationist-like campaign against the radiocarbon dating too, using the “arguments” picked straight from the evolution denial books.

I missed out on so many books like this. I learned how to read the summer between kindergarten and 1st grade and I read EVERYTHING. When my 1st grade teacher found out I was going home every day and reading the newspaper, she would not allow me to check out books with mostly pictures and some words. So that ruled out Dr. Seuss, Winnie The Pooh, Goodnight Moon, etc. etc. etc. I had to run my books by her to make sure they were sufficiently hard according to her. Part of that was because my mother dug in her heels and refused to let the school move me to third grade. (“She’s already the smallest kid in the 1st grade, why would I do that to her?”) I was held to a higher standard.

What I really could have done with is some therapy for autism spectrum disorders. But no, I was just considered smart, weird and antisocial.

Section 2.7. Formation in 1776 of the United States of America on the American territories of the dissolved Moscow Tartary.
And now we ask the question: when and how did the United States come into existence? Let us pay special attention to the time of formation of the USA. The Encyclopedic Dictionary tells us that “in the process of the wars for independence in North America in 1775-1783…an independent state was created, the USA (1776).” And now we realize unexpectedly that formation of the USA surprisingly EXACTLY COINCIDES WITH THE END OF THE WAR WITH “PUGACHEV” IN RUSSIA. Let us recall that “Pugachev” was defeated in 1775. Now everything is in its place. Apparently, the “Independence war” in North America was a war with the weakening American Russian Horde. The Romanovs attacked the Horde from the East, and Americans “struggling for independence” attacked it from the West.
Now they teach us that Americans were fighting for “independence from England”. In reality this was a war for the partition of enormous American lands of the Moscow Tartary, which found themselves without the central Russian-Horde governance…. It is clear that the very fact of the war with the “Mongolian” Horde in America was carefully erased from the pages of textbooks of American history. re: #71 mmmirele

I was bullied in elementary & middle school for being short, “4-eyes” and [N-word] hair. By the time I was in 8th grade all my friends were either Black or Communist.

True. People pay attention to that kind of twaddle and ignore stuff like Göbekli Tepe, which is a genuinely amazing archeological find. The megaliths at that site have been dated back to 9500 BCE, which makes the Giza Pyramids or Stonehenge look like they were just built a few years back in comparison.

Sadly, we know nothing at all about the civilization that built that site, and more’s the pity.

Did you know that microchips aren’t small enough to fit in a vaccine, and that vaccines don’t alter your DNA?
Apparently, my coworkers were thought to not know this.

All these know nothings / misinformed masses / ignorants think vaccines are bad and will implant chips or other nonsense, all while validating every living/waking moment on a smart phone that tracks absolutely every action (or utterance).

Way cool. I miss fireflies from growing up in the midwest. The photos you link to look like their straight out of Nausicaa or another Miyazaki film. I’m not sure I ever saw a single firefly where I lived in Japan.

So we know a couple who have been friends of ours for a long time. They are older than us, and have had health scares. The wife was recently taking Chemo for a blood/bone disorder and she survived that. And we haven’t been talking with them, because we haven’t seen them and they are not good for staying in touch.
So her husband posted on FB just what I said.
“Wife after hospital stay cannot find anywhere to be vaccinated. Can someone help us?”
The husband got vaccinated. Not sure if both.
So……………………………………………………………
My wife spoke with my daughter who then found her an opportunity to get the shot at a drug store somewhere.
When told this, she said she couldn’t make that date because she had a dental appointment.
Wha……
So my daughter, who is doing this just out of the kindness of her heart digs and finds a slew of vac sites popping up around Philly. Like 20-30 in and around the city.
Given that information, she then said her husband was doing “the bills” and he would look at it later.
I guess if you can actually get the vax you can’t drink the tears of those who suffer for you on FB.

If you don’t have a shred of compassion, think of it as self-preservation. Unvaccinated people help spread the virus, including more dangerous variants, no matter who they voted for. This Op Ed today, by former Vice President Mike Pence, continues Republican talking points about vote-by-mail laws and HR1 that are flat out lies, indicating that the old guard may not be moving away from Trump as quickly as we thought.

Even if Trump had graciously accepted his loss, there would have been exactly the same Republican efforts to disenfranchise minorities, with one possible exception: the proposed Arizona law to ignore the popular vote entirely would probably have not been brought up for consideration. Everything else? SOP for the GOP. But these attempts at voter disenfranchisement might not have been receiving as much publicity. The old guard is and has always been one with Trump (except, perhaps, regarding foreign policy and style)

re: #16 A Mom Anon

The only one I regret is Mulberry Street. It’s a good story/lesson for the kids whose imagination is much more entertaining than reality, and sometimes have problems remembering when to indulge the former. (Like, say, me and my little sister and my son and several of my now-writer friends…) Wish that the good Dr S. had found a way to update that one while he was still with us, but understand his heirs’ reasons.

I have a fairly good Seuss collection and a whole lot of Sandra Boynton and other kids’ books that I am keeping for my theoretical grandkid(s). Must confess I acquired several well after the son was past the age to enjoy them, this is Future Grandma’s stash. So glad for your 7-year-old proud reader, that’s a milestone to be proud of!

could be, but I see Hawley as really positioning himself to assume the Trump mantle. Even though he is a college-eddicated elitist politician he still manages to sell himself as a Man of the MAGAts

Trump is a college educated “pretend” billionaire who lives a lavish lifestyle; he had no problems creating the MAGAts — because he promoted the racism and nationalism that appeal to that segment of the population. Hawley would have no difficulty in doing the same; he is as much a racist as Trump. However, he doesn’t have the “wealth” that also attracts these supporters; they believe Trump is a brilliant successful businessman, and Hawley certainly doesn’t share that characteristic with Trump.

I have flown in & out of Khartoum several times. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking, because there are lots of hard-eyed guys with assault rifles scrutinizing every move, and passengers who look equally ready to throw down at the guys who’ve been oppressing them, and since it’s a stop in a Muslim country, you can’t get any booze until the plane is up in the air.

Don’t underestimate Trump’s celebrity in his phenomenon. The man is an ur-Kardashian. He’s been famous for 40 years for basically being famous. Remember in 2008 when the GOP line was that the Democrats were just electing a celebrity (which made no actual sense), and then 8 years later they turned around and did that exact thing.

There isn’t anyone in the GOP that has Trump’s name recognition/celebrity. Combined with the kayfabe wealthy businessman gimmick you mentioned, it made Trump a one in a million candidate who then one on a million to one shot.

Basically, Trump was the perfect shitstorm.

Of course, this does feed into the widespread conservative story that Biden has dementia and that’s why he won’t hold a press conference. It’s probably more that Biden is incapable of routinely responding with the short pithy answers that work well in this setting; he has a tendency to wander off in his responses.

They definitely do not hold Republicans responsible for the recent weather disaster. Not really, though there was a fair bit of development needed, the Rocketdyne XRS-2200 was based on tech from the J2 engine used on the upper stage of the Saturn and should have been a relatively easy time. The aerospike is significantly more efficient than the bell nozzle engines as well.

The question isn’t how dumb Texans are, it’s how racist and xenophobic Texans are. And based on my experience with some of those living now in Texas, residents who are financially comfortable, they have racism and xenophobia to spare.

They definitely do not hold Republicans responsible for the recent weather disaster. Our brother asserts that the state will be handling this so it doesn’t recur but he totally ignores our pointing out to him that the 2011 report addressed these issues but was ignored. He doesn’t care because the GOP is perfect, except possibly for those who criticize Trump.

Racism and xenophobia are pretty dumb.

So, for the past few weeks, we’ve been hearing a great horned owl at dawn/dusk/night. Haven’t caught a glimpse of him… until today.

I’ve officially seen my first owl outside of a zoo. Woo!

Or should I say, HOO!

Here’s the kicker. The owl is literally in my backyard and we can see the tree he’s roosting in from our house. That would explain how we hear him hooting so clearly.

Cool. I read that a grey wolf has been spotted in California near Yosemite for the first time in a century. Wildlife making a comeback is so cool.

The Texans who believe Abbott are not the ones that would get close enough to an illegal immigrant to get Covid from them. They’ll figure that out when they’re on the ventilator, they’ll have some free time to figure it out.

So now Abbott has laid down the marker that if you get Covid the you have been hanging around illegal immigrants. Any “real” classy Texan would never have caught it, they must have been slumming.

Well, you know the Texas elite have undocumented immigrants working on their gardens, cleaning their houses, and taking care of their children.

Normal people stop wearing college t-shirts after their 20s and at worst, 30s. I know nobody in their 50s who wears their college colors unless they’re visiting to watch their kid play in some athletic event.]

I think that normal people don’t care — they wear the shirts that are convenient or clean or suitable for the weather or match their earrings (///). I discovered that a sweatshirt from my alma mater worked fine during many winter days — it wasn’t the name emblazoned on the shirt but that I didn’t have other sweatshirts left in my wardrobe.

Elena Kagan Dismantled a Republican Lawyer and Might Have Saved Voting Rights Act in the Process
If it does survive, one Supreme Court justice gets the save. Charlie Pierce

As the last barely breathing remnant of the Voting Rights Act lay on a table in the chambers of the Supreme Court, Justice Elena Kagan performed an evisceration of her own. You can go a long time before you see a lawyer get taken apart the way Kagan dismantled Michael Carvin on Tuesday. She did such a thorough job that the VRA may actually survive this latest attack.

And there were a bunch of trolls in the comment section. One commenter told one of them: I fear you are hard of thinking.

I believe we all need to steal that!

Let’s be fair: A T-shirt is comfortable for warm weather. The Pence children get the same elite education as those of other successful politicians: one daughter at Harvard for graduate school, the other graduated Yale Law. Indeed, most of these faux religious fanatics or populists either attend top tier schools themselves or make sure their children do.

Ah..didn’t realize that. Of course. She’s just proud of her daughter getting into Harvard on her own merits.
