So, looks like Arkansas has outlawed abortion unless the woman’s life is in danger:

Like most other recent attempts at extreme abortion bans, the legislation is expected to face legal challenges from pro-choice advocacy groups before it can go into effect. But that’s exactly what proponents of the ban want: to force the U.S. Supreme Court, newly loaded with conservative justices appointed by former President Donald Trump, to revisit the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman’s nationwide right to access abortion.

This is going to set up the proverbial dog catching the tire moment. And I wonder if anyone on the forced birth side realizes that if they overturn Roe they open the door for cases like Heller being overturned. Once you formulate a legal argument to say that something that is recognized as a constitutionally protected right is no longer a constitutionally protected right, you set precedent to do that for all sorts of other things, including “the right to own a gun for self defense.” It’s also incredibly dangerous.

In other Minnesota-related news, Governor Walz also announced this morning that our vaccine schedule is moving to what he calls “Phase 1b Tier 2 and Tier 3” which includes: Age 45+ with one underlying comorbidity; Age 16+ with two comorbidities; Age 50+ in multi-generational housing; and all essential workers. We have reached 70% of Phase 1a and 1b Tier 1 (age 65+) with at least one dose, which was his target for advancing the dial. Minnesota has been quietly leading the country in COVID-19 statistics since the post-holiday spike, and it’s largely thanks to Governor Walz’s strategy of remaining well-informed and active in mitigation measures. Oh, yeah, and the fact that the Minnesota Senate’s GOP majority is powerless to revoke his peacetime emergency powers thanks to the way things work up here.

My read on The Queen is she often just shrugs and remarks, “I just work here.”

My money’s on Charles whining about the baby’s skin color and blocking his title. There are far too many moments when he reminds me of his fascist great uncle Edward VIII.

It’s been my feeling for a very long time that REII is hoping that she outlives her son so that the throne goes to her grandson.

Yeah this kind of bullshit will actually CAUSE WOMEN TO DIE. Abortion “to save a woman’s life” is legal in Ireland but that did not prevent the death of Savita Halappanavar. What happened is that the physicians had to let her situation to become dire before they were allowed to abort and by that time it was too late.

We just got a fundraising request from John Fetterman’s 2022 senatorial campaign. It’s early days, but there is some supposed advantage in goosing his pile by 31 March. Since most of what we do in Alabama is a really futile and stupid gesture, we’ve gone ahead and become homeboy’s friends for life.

I think it’d be better to say “it was legal in Ireland” because after Savita’s death, a combination of the external Indian pressure, and internal pressure from more liberal members of the Irish society lead to the repeal of the Eighth Amendment which was what banned abortion in the first place.

I think it would fair little better in America, if a foreign national dies for want of an abortion, especially if the supreme court simply throws the issue to back to the states rather than a blanket abortion ban across the entire US and so a particular state’s government can be pointed at and boycotted when it comes to tourism… changes would be inevtiable.

Evil will fail, the only question is how many people will it harm first.

I’m also under the impression that the Catholic Church’s position in Irish society has taken somewhere between a beating and a nosedive in recent decades, especially after the Church’s coverup of child abuse and rape of young children, and so the Catholic Church’s position had less sway than it would have had decades earlier.

These are heartbreaking, but I look at the photos to remind myself that fascism is inherently genocidal.

Another reminder is a segment from “Treblinka: Hitler’s Killing Machine” (where a group of archelogists work to verify the layout of the extermination camp), where a female archaelogist hits human remains just 30 cm (1 ft) down from the surface, and identifies it as a 4 to 5 year old child.

Brings the genocidal nature into uncomfortable focus, as well as the heavily distorted perception of reality the followers of the ideology suffer from. “Those you can make believe absurdities, you can make commit atrocities.” [h/t to Voltaire]. Kills any tendencies to laughter when you see one of the more ridiculous tenets the current iterations of fash hold onto…

Early in Covid, I got to listen to my wife furloughing her employees at the ballpark and at her other commercial accounts…that was followed a few months later by the layoff calls to the same people as it became clear this wasn’t going to be a short pandemic. Hardest thing to hear in the next room. She and her managers did this close to 1200 times.

Fast forward to President Biden and a promise to vaccinate everyone by the end of May. She’s busier than ever dealing with recalling people to return (so far everyone is) as they get ready to reopen at tech campuses and the ballpark prepares for live fans. A much better problem to have.

Dug up the actual quote, from “Questions sur les miracles” (1765):

Once your faith, sir, persuades you to believe what your intelligence declares to be absurd, beware lest you likewise sacrifice your reason in the conduct of your life. In days gone by, there were people who said to us: “You believe in incomprehensible, contradictory and impossible things because we have commanded you to; now then, commit unjust acts because we likewise order you to do so.” Nothing could be more convincing. Certainly anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices. If you do not use the intelligence with which God endowed your mind to resist believing impossibilities, you will not be able to use the sense of injustice which God planted in your heart to resist a command to do evil. Once a single faculty of your soul has been tyrannized, all the other faculties will submit to the same fate. This has been the cause of all the religious crimes that have flooded the earth.

In other news, my wife and I bought a Peloton spin bike for each other for our birthdays which are 2 weeks apart. It arrived last Friday. We didn’t climb on until Sunday, but now we’re both 3 days in a row into using it. Both did the 20 minute beginner class Sunday, and I found a 20 minute classic rock class for her yesterday which she kind of enjoyed. Then I found Hamilton (which she loves) and today she did 30 minutes of that.

I had bookmarked a couple of Grateful Dead rides (45 min each) for myself, and a 20 minute Jam Band (Dead, Phish, Umphrees McGee, etc) for myself for today, but when I went to get on she had added a Paul McCartney & Wings lesson to my “stack”…I fuckin’ hate PM&W (not really, but once I accidentally left the dogs listening to a Paul McCartney marathon on Sirius for seven hours and have avoided him since…they were all, WE DON’T GIVE A FUCK WHAT THE MAN SAYS). So I did that because I love her and I don’t really hate Paul, and it was quite fun.

Looking forward to the effect this will have on my body in a few weeks once I get over the build new muscle phase. I really enjoyed spin classes almost 20 years ago and having them on demand at home is actually really nice. I figure I’ll eventually come up with a few classes I can do over and over and then bookmark some scenic rides and add my own soundtrack (god bless Alexa and whatever the fuck I want to hear). Also super stoked that my wife seems to be enjoying it as well.

The same people who make money and billions no matter what are worried that they’ll suddenly have to pay a bit more? That the economy will somehow overheat despite fact that the Federal Reserve has the capability to put brakes on too fast growth by hiking interest rates?

What exactly is the scenario where the economy overheats from the Biden relief plan?

I’m still waiting - the only response so far is “we’ve heard what can go wrong before”.

We know from history that going too small on relief during an economic downturn prolonged the malaise and economic recovery. Going big can supercharge it, especially if the relief includes direct aid to those most in need. And that’s exactly what’s happening here.

It’s simple math: Time and time again, it’s been proven that the government spending a large amount of money at the right time and directed to the right people can have an enormous positive effect on the economy, while government inaction can have an enormous negative effect. We’ve seen what McConnell’s stinginess has done to us over the last year. Now it’s time to see what the President and Congressional Dems’ largesse is going to do.

I was wondering what they offered. I bought an inexpensive stationary to start out with, but I would eventually like to get something with some virtual support. The commercials, though, really make it look like you need to be in shape to use one. I am at the stage where if I tried a quarter of what they show on the commercials I would injure myself, probably my heart.

The same people who make money and billions no matter what are worried that they’ll suddenly have to pay a bit more? That the economy will somehow overheat despite fact that the Federal Reserve has the capability to put brakes on too fast growth by hiking interest rates?

Heh. Yep. When I got Cleo, she bit me nearly every day for over 2 freaking months. Some of the wounds were deep enough to require stitches(I did first aid with butterfly bandages and things healed nicely). It broke my heart. But just as quick as she started, she stopped. Cleo was a throwaway dog, wandering the streets on her own for awhile when she was caught by animal control and taken to the pound. Who knows who hurt her or how long she was on her own when she was found at 7 months. You really don’t see full blooded puppies with no microchip or tags or anything, so something not cool happened there. Who knows?

This crap with Major is nonsense. Someone may have made a quick move towards his human Mom or Dad and he was protecting his family. He didn’t break the skin, and trust me, a GSD can fuck up your shit with those house wolf fangs. He’s a good boy and everyone needs to back the fuck up.

It’s also been a week since Cleo basically took me out and knocked me to the ground over a damned shadow from the back porch light into the yard, so hard it knocked my shoes off. I am doing a lot better but my shoulder and ribs are still very sore. But am I getting rid of Cleo? Nope. Have I thought about it? Oh yes. A lot. But then I realize that we have a very smart girl here who adores my husband and just needs a job. An unemployed working dog always ends up in trouble, lol. Major has nowhere near the issues Cleo has, so again, assholes using this to attack the Bidens need to shut the fuck up. Major is a good boy.

re: #118 Decatur Deb

Maybe he’s an asshole.

Looking at his actual Wiki (after looking at his district’s), Cuellar’s basically a House version of Manchin on steroids:

Cuellar describes himself as a “moderate-centrist” or sometimes as a conservative Democrat.[5] During the 115th Congress, he voted with President Donald Trump nearly 70% of the time, and he has advocated that more Democrats should embrace a more conservative voting record.[35] Other sources have stated that he votes with the Republican party 75% of the time.[36]

[…]

Cuellar was one of three Democrats to vote for Kate’s Law, which expands maximum sentences for immigrants who re-enter the United States after being deported.[45] He supported legislation to strip federal funding for jurisdictions that have sanctuary policies in place.[45]

On December 18, 2019, Cuellar voted for both articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.[52]

According to one measure, Cuellar voted with President Trump more than any other Democrat in Congress, except one.[53]

Cuellar received the most financial contributions by the private prison industry than any member of Congress, except one Republican.[54]

In 2020, Cuellar was one of only six democratic congress members to vote against the federal decriminalization of marijuana (H.R. 3884).[55][56]

Agreeing with Trump’s/the GOP’s “positions” 70-75% of the time? Fuck him…at least Manchin votes with the Dems most of the time and especially when it counts (historically).

Do note that, this past election, Cuellar almost got his ass primaried by a Justice Democrats candidate:

On January 11, 2019, the progressive organization Justice Democrats, which supported the successful 2018 primary campaign in New York City for U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced that it was seeking a primary challenger against Cuellar in the Democratic primary scheduled for March 4, 2020.[24] On July 13, 2019, Justice Democrats announced their support for Jessica Cisneros, a 26-year-old immigration and human rights attorney from Laredo who has announced a primary campaign against Cuellar.[25] However, Cuellar fended off the primary challenge by 51.8 percent to 48.2 percent.[26]
