Humanity’s greatest ally against climate change is the Earth itself
Ecosystems can draw down carbon and buffer us from the worst effects of climate change — but only if we protect them
washingtonpost.com

A tentatively hopeful article on using (and preserving) localized ecosystems to remove and sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

And we have never had to adapt to anything like the world we live in now. The last time atmospheric carbon concentrations were this high, humanity’s ancestors hadn’t even learned to stand on two legs. The last time average global temperatures changed this much, this fast — well, scientists don’t think that’s ever happened.
The rapid transformation of our planet doesn’t just endanger ecosystems; humanity will suffer. People have never lived on a planet without mangroves, or peatlands, or summertime ice. We’ve never had to go without the benefits the Earth provides.
Recovery is still possible — the kelp forests are proof. Along the California coast, marine protected areas have been established to protect kelp habitat. Fishermen are harvesting excess urchins from the barrens. Scientists are working on developing more heat-tolerant strains of giant algae, and environmental groups are restoring reefs and replanting the sea beds where kelp once grew.
Slowly, in scattered areas, the forest has started to return. The canopies are thickening; fish swim once more amid their swaying stems. Even the urchins are plumper and healthier — a reminder that all life depends on diversity.
Nature doesn’t only need us to save it. Humanity needs nature if we hope to survive

That fucked up laugh is a teaching moment, because it displays that Tucker—and by extension his show, his network, his politics—is ultimately about contempt and feeling that other people just don’t matter.

Every sentence he says is less important to the message he’s trying to communicate than the laugh. He’s modeling the behavior for the audience.

Some white kids consumed pop culture that included black artists. Many did not; some who did not, held it in contempt. And they likely never ended up meeting someone who had different life experiences, never bothered to learn about those different life experiences, and ultimately turned into their parents.

For example, a lot of the arguments they use against trans people are the same arguments their parents used against gay people when we were in high school and college in the 90s. Funny that.

I feel like we’re probably past the performative stuff. Taking a knee leads to conversations about taking a knee and not about the things the person protesting wants the conversation to be about. Athletes would probably be better off redirecting interviews to issues they care about. That’ll still piss off a lot of people, and may just lead to conversations about whether this is the right time/way to do it, but at least you can turn around and point out that it really is true that for those opposed to the protests, no form of protest will be acceptable.

It’s too new for tests to be run but so far, all of the vaccines have been shown to be effective for all of the variants because the virus itself isn’t changing that much.

When I was in Israel in the late 1970’s there was a report that one of the Egyptian Suez oil wells had suddenly caught fire.

A little later more information came out. It appeared that an Egyptian SAM-6 missile had been inadvertently been fired. As the heat seeking antiaircraft missile achieved operational height, it started to look for a heat source to target. It saw a gas flare from the Suez oil field, flew down that pipe and exploded.

Friends were joking that some poor Egyptian private had sat down on the control panel and accidentally launched the missile.

I ran the numbers on mortality in India. The last few years before COVID, they averaged about 7.2 per 1000 people per year, or .72%

If the rate of cremations is up 1000% (10X) over last year, that’s 72 Per 1000 people per year, or 7.2% over a rolling calendar year. With 1.3 billion people, that’s over 91 Million people in a rolling year.

That’s almost two and a half Californias. Chilling.

I hadn’t raised that there was a COVID Indian variation.

Anyone hear if any of the vaccines are good against this variant?

Quotes from the article linked below:

He points out that the India variant has been around since late last year: “If it is driving the wave in India it has taken several months to get to this point which would suggest it’s probably less transmissible than the Kent B117 variant.”

Scientists believe existing vaccines will help control the variant when it comes to preventing severe disease.

Some variants will inevitably escape the current vaccines, according to a paper published in Nature by Prof Gupta and his fellow researchers. As a result, changes to vaccine design will be needed to make them more effective.

However, the vaccinations now available are still likely to slow down the spread of the disease.

“For most people, these vaccines can mean the difference between little to no disease and ending up in the hospital with a risk of dying,” says Dr Kamil.

I personally think a booster with the alternate spike mutations would be best, but just one. Most of India’s vaccines are inactivate “virus-like” particles (Covaxin) .

On the topic of off-topic, I had a moment of weakness and stopped into the local meat market tonight when grabbing some essentials. They had a new flavor of jerky, Asian Chicken jerky. It was surprisingly delicious, but disappointingly not spicy. It paired well with the horseradish cheese curds I got to eat with it (and the other flavors of jerky I bought).

Just reported on the BBC website — one vaccination of either the Pfizer or the AstraZeneca vaccine (both two-shot vaccines) provides very good protection even before the second shot is administered. The study done in Britain, although not yet peer-reviewed, has very large sample groups of over 370,000 people and 46,000 people.

people who had been vaccinated with a single dose of either the Oxford-AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines were 65% less likely to get a new Covid infection.

There’s going to be an interesting set of studies to investigate which method is better: everyone get 1 dose, and then second dose, or try to get people to 2 dose completion first, even though fewer are protected - the ones who are protected are fully protected.

It may be that the first approach is better, especially with more virulent strains in circulation, or that the more virulent strains mean you need two doses to get the protection we need to see.

I have a personal stake in this — I got my first vaccination back in February (Oxford/AstraZeneca) and today I got the appointment letter for my second jab (ObUS: shot) which I will get next week. The delay between my two jabs is 11 weeks and one day, we were promised a maximum delay of twelve weeks. All approved vaccines in the UK are two-shot types (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca). The Novavax vaccine may get approved soon, first in the world if that happens, after good test results were published a couple of weeks ago.

The reason for the extended delay between jabs, a lot longer than the manufacturer-approved interval of 21 days to four weeks was to try and prevent the health services crashing under the load of people with serious COVID-19 symptoms. In early January this year we had thousands of new cases each day requiring hospitalisation, yesterday that number was 160. It seems to have worked.

The big push in vaccinations in the UK has now shifted from first jabs for the most vulnerable to making sure those due their second jab within the twelve-week interval (like myself) get caught up. The ratio is about 1:4 for first-dose vs. second-dose right now.

I posted on FB my concerns about the coronavirus surge in India. Two Trumpster FB friends commented:
>> one suggested that I should just enjoy life and not let it pass me by while I wait in safety;
>> the other said “Totally inaccurate information” without specifying what was supposedly in error and where she acquired her alternative facts. My guess is that it was from Tucker or from Noisemax.

Fucking Republicans. More than almost anyone else in the world, GW Bush could appreciate how immensely unqualified Trump was for the presidency.

Yet Bush still couldn’t bring himself to oppose Trump in the only way that actually counts (i.e., by voting for Biden).

He’s also a liar so take what he says with a ton of salt.

If he came out and said he voted for Biden the Bush name would be mud in Republican circles.

He could have just said nothing. It’s a secret ballot for a reason. But no he had to “virtue signal” to the Bill Kristols and David Brookses of the world.

Another reason for me to ignore the Olympic Mass Spreader Event.

Olympics are a close second in absolute corruption to FIFA.
Maybe first in corruption.
Look back through time at the money spent and the facilities as they are today.
And somebody got rich.
Brazil 2016 anyone?

If it shook homes for miles, and the party was anywhere nearby, I’d expect some brain damage, and they did not start out as scholars.

Hearing damage, most likely. Their ears will still be ringing for probably a couple of weeks. They’ll probably always have a little bit of tinnitus.

No apparent reason but I thought this was interesting:
List of 100-point games in college football
Most of these occurred before 1940 with only one in the twenty-first century (Division III Rockford 105, Trinity Bible College 0 in 2003.)
I had not realized this:

In only one game did the losing team score more than 7 points, with North Central scoring 32 points in 1968 and North Park winning by “only” 72 points.

The most one-sided was Georgia Tech’s 222-0 win over Cumberland in 1916. This “contest” rates its own wikipedia article, which explains in some depth how this disaster came to be.
The coach, manager and starting fullback of the Cumberland gang (one could hardly call it a team) was none other than future political fixer and presidential crony George E. Allen (1896-1973).

A favorite is his (Allen’s) account of the Georgia Tech-Cumberland U. football game in 1916. Cumberland’s fullback and captain, George Allen himself, made the best run of the game for his hard pressed side: “I only lost six yards.” He would have made one beautiful punt if his own center had not blocked it with the back of his neck. George recalls: “I once dropped the ball and yelled at another fellow: ‘Pick it up.’ He yelled back at me, ‘Pick it up yourself, you dropped it.’” The score: Tech, 222; Cumberland, 0.

Being gun people who blow shit up, they probably already had it.

I had tinnitus for a full year after seeing an indoor Iggy Pop/Ramones/Dickies show. I was surprised when it stopped.

My family reports that some of those eligible (everyone over 45) got their second shot delayed. How widespread this was, is unclear.

What can I say? We don’t have the vaccine access the US does. It doesn’t matter how much was ordered (A LOT), we’re not getting it. And what we get is coming from Europe.

I had no idea the vaccine supply was so tight in Canada. So that’s another reason to be irritated at vaccine-resistant jackasses in the US, who are likely to lead to significant waste of US vaccine doses before this is over.
