Some folks in that thread say future historians will look at these people as a “cult.” A cult is simply a disfavoured religious view (not using the Catholic definition of cult, but the popular usage). It’s why Mormons or Jehovah’s Witnesses are frequently called cults, why Scientology is frequently called a cult, &c. (If Scientology became the majority religion in the USA, then Christianity as a whole would likely be lumped together as a cult. “Cult” is a very subjective word.)

Men cannot be forcibly raped according to federal law, thus those rapes are not required to be reported.

Statutory sexual assault is for cases (depending on the state) where the victim cannot legally consent because they’re under the state’s age of consent. There are exceptions, like Romeo and Juliet laws (I have OPINIONS, but will restrain myself), but a 13 YO cannot consent to being sexually assaulted by his teacher or her next door neighbor, NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY. And there are more of those than you might imagine.
We have to be INSISTENT on these statutory sexual assault cases because there are still stupid ass fucking judges out there who see 14 YOs as temptresses and would throw out cases for that very reason alone.
(Not in a good mood this morning, been duking it out with anti-abortion people. Sorry, not sorry.)

Rpgs are basically rockets launched via a tube-like device.

In high school the cross-country ski team spent a few weekends clearing trail in a woods as part of our training course. (We’d run it if there was insufficient snow to ski it.) That included trying for about a 10’ vertical clearance since we expected at least 6” (if not more) snow to be down on the trail.
Once the local river froze we gained quite a bit of additional terrain to use. Though skiing on the river itself and the open areas around the school itself was not our favorite bit due to the complete exposure to the wind while there.

Allow me to be the heat sink for controversy:
Terrorism is when small groups of ideologues abuse civilians to change society the way states abuse civilians to maintain society.
States get away with it because they characterize their violence as preservation—the current order needs this violence to persist—relying on the tendency of people to view the status quo as non-political. That that status quo is unreasonable and radical in its enforcement of “normality”is simply not a possibility in this view.
A state can use it’s size to both create the pretext for terror and create disavowals to distinguish their terror from illegitimate forms of terror. Marines invading Haiti and setting up martial law are somehow acting in self-defense, so they’re not doing terror when they shoot and torture people. Bombing of Algiers that has been authorized as part of a police action that kills civilians is not terror because feasibly the bomb was intended to kill only rebels…even though the very nature of a bomb released on a city means that the bomb cannot discriminate.
And so it goes.

One of the most fucked things that recurs in colonialism is how often normal people are encouraged to go places that are dangerous because they believe they’re safe because of colonization…that they can go be farmers in Africa and that the natives simply aren’t a factor because they’ve been told (via racism) that the natives don’t matter and (via nationalism) that they will be protected and (via capitalism) that the opportunity is worth the risk.
It’s not as simple as a false flag: it’s setting up a vicious win/win scenario. Settlers peacefully seize land, or if they meet resistance then the military can intervene and the same land is seized by force. Either way the center of empire actually benefits the most.
It’s how you hide that you’re doing the same shit Genghis Khan did underneath layers of moralizing and scientific positivism.
This is why I’m a bit…whithering…about the idea of “innocence” as part of the moral calculation. It’s a kind of narrativization that picks and chooses who deserves sympathy on one hand, but also who’s suffering merits disproportionate revenge on the other…and there’s always a thumb on the scale. Once you put people into collective guilt, outside of “innocent”…you can just do worse and worse things to them.

That was fun to watch! I learned this dance as a Brownie Scout, waaaay back in the mid-60s when our troop had a sister troop in the Philippines. But we sure weren’t doing it at that speed ;p
One of my dad’s Filipino colleagues from Natl Jewish Hospital helped us with the project — she taught us the dance and helped us rig costumes, and gave us a 45 record with traditional music. Support for Abbott plunging in Texas: poll
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) job performance rating has fallen sharply, according to a new poll that shows a majority of Texans now disapprove of him.
Forty-five percent of Texans approve of Abbott’s performance as governor, while 54 percent say the state is headed in the wrong direction, according to the survey from The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler.
Abbott’s approval rating was at 59 percent prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 60,000 people in the state, The Dallas Morning News noted.
Forty-five percent approval at this point is still shameful but it’s moving in the right direction. Will we turn Texas blue? The demographics are on our side but we have to win the legislative and legal battles over voter rights and gerrymandering. I still think it will happen well within my lifetime, and I’m 72 now.
Some of the traditional Texas conservatives (ie crazed yokel bigots) see this change but are oblivious to the reasons for it. They tend to blame an influx of Californicators bringing their librul weirdo ideas with their investment money. In fact, the most enthusiastic Cal transplants are GOP or lepertarian tax refugees who like their property cheap, their regulation non-existent, and their ideology reactionary. The blue shift is coming from within, from empowered minorities and young people who just aren’t buying the same old bullshit.

Yes, terrorist means bad person. It is someone working to achieve a political goal expressly through the inspiring of terror in a people/government. Memories of Mom’s Swiss Steak!
2 to 3 pounds boneless chuck steak, or bottom round
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 medium onions, quartered and sliced
3 tablespoons vegetable oil, more as needed
1 (28-ounce) can tomatoes, undrained and chopped
For Thickening the Sauce:
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, as needed
1 tablespoon water, as needed
Preheat the oven to 325 F
Trim fat from steak.
Season the meat with pepper and salt. Add a good amount of flour on a cutting board and place the steak on it. Sprinkle more flour over the meat and pound it with a meat hammer to tenderize. Continue to turn, flour, and pound until most of the flour is used and the steak is nice and flat and feels spongy to the touch. Set aside.
Heat a large, heavy ovenproof skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the pan.
When the oil is hot, but not smoking, add the sliced onions. Cook, constantly stirring until the onions are translucent and lightly browned, for about 10 minutes. Remove the onions to a dish with a slotted spoon.
If needed, add another tablespoon of the remaining oil to the pan to cover its bottom.
Cut the steak into 6 pieces and place them in the hot oil. If your pan isn’t big enough, work in batches until all steaks are brown on all sides, 1 to 2 minutes per side, and there is no pink showing. If needed, use the remaining tablespoon of oil between each batch.
Place the onion on top of the steaks, add the canned tomatoes, and cover the pan. Place the meat in the oven and bake for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the steaks are tender.
Remove the steaks, tomatoes, and onions to a hot serving platter.
If the remaining sauce is too thin, place the pan over medium heat. Combine 1 tablespoon of flour with 1 tablespoon of cold water and stir the mixture into the sauce until no lumps remain. Simmer the sauce until well thickened.
Pour the sauce over steaks.
Yum!

I spent a few weeks in Taipei on a couple of occasions. The person I was visiting lived pretty close to that park (I’m pretty sure). Lots of elderly folks just hanging out, some doing tai qi (qigong?), others stopping to massage their feet on areas of the path where smooth stones that seemed to fit the arch of the foot arose slightly from the pathway. A great oasis among the din of two-stroke engines at the time 1995-96.

1 6-7 lb French Roast or Brisket
1.5 Tbsp kosher salt
1 tsp. coarse (freshly ground) black pepper
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 green bell pepper, sliced
2 large sweet onions, sliced
5 cloves garlic, chopped
1 14.5 oz can crushed tomatoes
1 12 oz can tomato puree
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. cider vinegar
1/2 c. dry red wine
Preheat oven to 325°
Rub meat with kosher salt & black pepper.
Spread sliced peppers, onions & garlic on the bottom of a heavy roasting pan. Place meat on top of the vegetables.
Combine crushed tomatoes, puree, brown sugar, vinegar & wine. Pour over meat.
Cover and bake for 3 hours. Turn the meat over after 1 1/2 hours.
When meat is done (fork will slide in easily), remove from oven & let stand until cool enough to touch.
Refrigerate overnight.
Before serving, slice into thin strips. Reheat in oven at 300° for 30 minutes.
I don’t know how to make it on the grill or in a smoker because I have never tried that but I am sure you can find instructions online.

Her first book was a lot of that, but this one is not. This one is more about the psychological damage Trump’s presidency has done to this country, mainly because of the wounds ripped wide open.
The audiobook version is especially good, as it is read by the author, who is very engaging, interesting, and has a wicked sense of humor.

The antipathy between both sides is too great to overcome as long Trump and his posse in Congress continue to incite anger and hatred against the election results and the GOP states continue to conduct fraudits and pass legislation to suppress voters.
