I remain convinced that Cheney’s motivation is competition for the same political-ecological niche. Generic establishment Republicans fully expect to be ruling in a GOP quasi dictatorship 20-30 years from now, and think that Trump is too early and blatant with this shit.

Hard for me to discern Cheney’s motivation. It could just be spite. Or maybe it’s her father’s spite and she’s just being a good little girl?

The world (by which I mean human society) changes. Trumpism is an attempt at populist authoritarianism based on the know-nothing defense practiced by fundamentalists who are desperate to not let go of their myths.

In 30 years human dynamics will likely all be the same, but the faces will change. But also what will have changed is the rest of the world, and American politics, not matter how hard it tries, cannot exist in a vacuum.

Big, really big, problems lay ahead the rest of this century. Migrations forced by climate change are going to rattle both Europe and Asia.

America, an addict for petroleum, is slowly trying to give up its addiction but we still worship our cars. We think electric vehicles are the answer but as of 2021 most of our transportation is still by gasoline and diesel.

But fossil fuels are a diminishing resource, and while they won’t diminish fast enough to keep us from really big changes in the climate the choicest of the drugs - high quality petroleum - is something that even now we see as dminishing. The US has kept “liquids” production high but that is due to natural gas exploration and fracking. If it weren’t for increasing mileage standards our gasoline demand would be much higher, which would drive prices much higher.

All this song and dance over fossil fuels will crash in this century. The economic fallout will, I think, drive American politics almost as much as migration.

Anyway, Cheney’s anti-Trump stance is not going to be the last instance of an establishment type fighting against a populist authoritarian. I fully expect this to be the nature of American politics until long after I die.

My “Walmart Reward is ready to claim.” My “mystery gift has arrived” from “Banks of America.” A warning that a “new device” has attempt to access my account with Wells Fargo (which doesn’t exist). It’s sometimes hard to spot the real stuff.

Not to mention my thrice daily phone calls from a Mr. Scam Likely, who apparently is very concerned by the expiration of my car warranty (which happened years ago, of course).

By the way, I’m seriously considering getting rid of the cell phone option for two-factor authentication and switching entirely to authenticator apps, because: 1) the apps are more secure, and 2) cell phone companies seem to be shutting down their free gateways to send texts, and the more dependable services used by big companies are costly.

I use an authenticator myself, for everything that will let me. Prefer it to the text method.

The text option was (is) always unreliable. SMS messages are sent out-of-band on a command channel, and are de-prioritized appropriately. This means that a delay of minutes in their delivery is not uncommon. The proliferation of authenticator apps these days means that if you can offer such a service (and Google makes it pretty easy, so why wouldn’t you?), it is preferred.

Man accused of attacking Harris County judge, bailiff, and prosecutors in court

A man has been charged after Harris County prosecutors say he attacked a bailiff, a judge, and two prosecutors when he showed up to court Tuesday morning.

According to prosecutors, 54-year old Joseph Catarineau was in court to discuss his attorney’s withdrawal from his case. Catarineau was facing charges related to filing false financial instruments, so prosecutors say his violent actions came as a surprise.
During court, Catarineau became agitated by the judge asking questions about his defense, and whether he would now need a court-appointed attorney, according to prosecutors.

Catarineau, who claims to be a self-proclaimed sovereign citizen or someone who believes they should decide which laws to obey and which to ignore, used that as his defense with the judge and was ordered to a holding area where his bond would be revoked temporarily, prosecutors say.

Tased, cuffed, hauled away to jail, there to remain for a long, long time (3 felony assault charges).

Even though I am retired IT I am a ditzy old lady and I don’t know how to set up the Google authenticator on my phone? Care to put up a tutorial in the pages?

Back in my day we used WSL login creds for EVERYTHING and we liked it that way! I still have a keychain from RSA that generates a SecureID code every 30 seconds when activated.

In the heyday of my World of Warcraft raiding days, it was mandatory for all of my raiders to have a Blizzard two-factor authentication token - basically a reskin of a standard RSA key generator. I still have mine; I think, if I could figure out how to replace the battery, it would probably still be operable. For the account itself, I have long since replaced the authenticator fob with SMS auth.

Blizzard has their own authenticator app (as well as Steam); that’d be more secure than SMS auth, which should always be the last resort as a 2FA method.
