I idolized him growing up… even wrote him a letter (and got a response!)

In later years his reputation has been tarnished a bit - he did not treat women well. But I still enjoy reading him.

Many of the SF greats of that generation had some significant … let’s say foibles. Clarke, Heinlein, Asimov, Dick, etc. all had significant flaws.

Maybe Mailer’s work can enter the public domain and be published on Gutenberg or the Internet Archive. The famous editor of Astounding, John Campbell, was published this way: His collected editorials are on Gutenberg.

Sadly, I have never been able to read more than a few pages of Campbell. Even in his time, he was hard, hard, HARD right, never mind today. The editorials of Readers Digest, and the Manchester Union-Leader on roids. Heavy roids, with rage included!

I got seen faster from the ambulance ride. Both times it was acid reflux. But I can tell you why people drive themselves over to the ER if they can—because the cost of an ambulance ride is completely out of this world. At the beginning of 2021, the statutory cost of an ambulance ride in Maricopa County was $997.05. Don’t get sick up in the high country or you might end up paying twice that.

ETA: my mom lives less than 2 miles from the local ER and the heart hospital. He is going to bundle her up into the car and drive her over and not call an ambulance for a $1,000 ride, because there ain’t nobody who can afford that.

Update to the Great South Jersey COVID watch:

So just found out about 35 minutes ago the middle niece does have COVID. She’s a teen and has had at least two shots, so she should be okay. My sister says the virus is behaving like a bad cold, so fingers crossed. The niece picked it up from someone she was hanging out with on NYE.

Unfortunately, that leaves four more people in the house who are potential carriers right now. My sister’s a teacher and the BiL works for a major delivery company, so there’s that headache as well.

So goddamned thankful that my siblings aren’t MAGAts and/or vax deniers.

As for us: we weren’t wearing N95s, but we were wearing masks with filters. Never say never, but hopefully we can dodge this bullet again. Shit, this could be my third near miss in two weeks.

I most likely will have to cancel my morning dentist appointment.

Absolutely frightening how quickly Omi is spreading.

My last ride was for sepsis, and Medicare and the Medicare Supplement paid for it. And yep, I went straight in. Fortunately it was in 2019, so not involved with covid hysteria. Unfortunately, they were building on to the hospital, and were under-roomed and under-staffed. It made the week I was there really more unpleasant than it already was.

The writers on TNG actually had a term for trying to write drama while working within the constraints of his vision of what future humanity would be: “The Roddenberry Box.” He’d take you aside and tell you that Earth was a paradise, that all conflict had been resolved, nobody wanted for basic needs, and that all those “petty” impulses that we’d once devoted ourselves to were gone. I enjoyed reading the Star Trek ‘geek-out’ this morning. If you haven’t seen it, I heartily recommend “What We Left Behind” the documentary about the making of Deep Space Nine. It gives a pretty good idea of the trials and tribble-ations (see what I did there??) of making a TV show. I have it on Blu-ray but I seem to remember it being on Amazon Prime as well (if you have Amazon Prime).

The plan was to deploy the new cover for the grow tunnel a couple days ago, but the last front gave us a day of 30-50 mph winds. The row of planted containers is hardy stuff—cabbage and broccoli, so it can take this morning’s low—31 degrees. That’s the season low so far. We need a few days below freezing to chill the pear trees.

Igor Bogdanoff, the French TV star known for his eccentric personality and appearance, has died at 72.

The television presenter passed away just days after his identical twin, Grichka. The brothers are both reported to have succumbed to COVID-19.

“In peace and love, surrounded by his children and his family, Igor Bogdanoff left for the light on Monday January 3, 2022,” says a statement released by Bogdanoff’s family via his agent, the Sun reported. He is survived by his ex-wife, the writer Amélie de Bourbon-Parme, and their six children.

“City on the Edge of Forever” (written famously by Harlan Ellison, who actually published his original script, with grumpy annotations, in a fit of pique at Roddenberry’s gall in having dared to edit the thing), and “Assignment: Earth” respectively. Teri Garr has nothing good to say about her guest appearance there, and wishes people would quit asking her about it.

There was another — “Tomorrow Is Yesterday” — where they get thrown back in time and accidentally show up on 1960s USAF radar. Fighter pilot sees an undeniable UFO, and the Fearless Crew has to beam down and “fix the timeline” so they can get home. It was the first Dorothy Fontana script for the series that she got full credit for.

But yeah, Roddenberry (a veteran of westerns) had pitched the show to Paramount as a “wagon train in space” schtick, and sold it in part with the line that they could reuse stock sets and costumes by having a Roman world, a Western world, a 20C office-block world, a gangster world, etc. Plus lots of “underground city” worlds where they wouldn’t have to shoot on location… and “ship in a bottle” episodes where they wouldn’t even have to book time on non-core sets at all.

(EDIT: I goofed, Batman was a Fox/ABC production, so M:I was Paramount/NBC’s only big-budget teen drama) After all, Paramount already had two shows going into production aimed at the same audience, with gigantic budgets. _Batman_ would become the most expensive show on television, and _Mission: Impossible_ wasn’t far behind. The Star Trek crew used to raid both of those shows’ dumpsters for props, in fact.

Come to think of it, I wonder how many times Gene had to turn down requests from the executives to do a _Batman_ crossover. Wouldn’t that have been something.

Husqvarna!

They are all good. If I was to go out and purchase a new machine, I would buy a Husqvarna, mainly because I am a huge fan of their chainsaws. My mother had a nice old aluminum Singer, that I would help her thread the needle because of “her old eyes.” Looking back, I think it was from one too many Manhattans, but that is ok.

When the ICU numbers soar, it shows once again that hospitalizations and ER and bed utilization isn’t incidental to covid, but the result of covid being exponentially worse in magnitude than just a few weeks ago.

That fewer are dying on a per capita basis is small comfort for those watching family dying of covid despite vaccinations being widely available. Far too many aren’t vaccinating.

White GOPers are among the least vaccinated. But we have to do better for all folks, since it takes enough people vaccinating to protect the community.

I wonder how long that will last. The new Czech government has quietly begun discussing when they’ll phase out vaccine passports, at least for everyday use. There’s also some pressure on them, as the Constitutional Court here is expected to rule on the use of vaccine passports sometime in the next couple months or so, and the new government reckons they need to have some idea of where to go next if (as expected*), the CC rules against vaccine passports for non-international travel.

* - The Constitutional Court here is pretty libertarian, and prioritizes individual rights over collective rights, a legacy from the Communist era, where there pretty much was no such thing as “individual rights”.

If you’re planning to do mostly plain sewing, you’re probably better off getting one made before about 1980 and in good condition. They still made them to last, and used metal instead of plastic.

If you’re still looking for advice on that, I’d recommend Brother or Janome. Both make solid machines, but don’t buy anyone’s bottom of the line, designed to sell at a big box store model. Sometimes they’re fine, sometimes not.
Most people recommend buying from a reputable dealer just because if you have a problem, they’ll deal with it. That is more important on a fancy machine since there’s more that can go wrong, but generally is good advice. Also, you can discuss your needs with them and actually try out machines.

The issue with older machines is that if they are electronic the board will die sooner or later and can’t be replaced. Not an issue with mechanical machines, but 40 or 50 year old machines can have wiring issues. That said, I do have Mom’s old Featherweight and it works fine 70 years on.

Depending on what kind of sewing you plan to do, you may not need a lot of different stitches, I rarely go beyond straight, zig-zag, and “stepped” zig-zag (aka mending) stitches. If you want to sew garments, get a good buttonhole stitch. If you want to sew through 3 layers of heavy canvas, you’ll need a machine with the power to do that.
Stitch evenness and quality are important.

Where I am and where I’m from, there would’ve been a direct military response to what happened in DC on the 6th, with quite expectable results given what type of units would be used.
Also, where I live and where I’m from any service members partaking in the coup attempt would face treason or even high treason charges for their effort, as the service oath is very specific about such things.

It triggers some to no end when I explain that what some service members did on the 6th would lead to charges almost invariably leading to imprisonment for life where I live and where I’m from. And that under the laws here, it is treason and/or high treason.

Welp, I almost never post here, so here’s a thing:

We have the grandfathered-in Plan F Medicare coverage, because we can. That means that we have no fear of any cost to us when we access health care. Quite literally, if anything medical happens, no worries, no copay.

That is how it should be, for everyone.

Ahem, I was brought up on the NHS (UK), where everyone gets this class of treatment.

That’s what I have. I don’t know how much longer I can afford it, but it is what everyone should have. Period!

But the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals will be 100% on board with this, and so it will go to SCOTUS. They are likely to shoot it down, but that’s still time on the clock where unvaccinated idjits get to be treated as normal people, instead of as unvaccinated idjits.

In other words, they’ll make a lot of noise and do nothing of consequence for two years, which might be the best we can expect from the repugs.

I don’t expect anything to pass beyond the very bare minimum to keep things functioning. But even in that regard, it will largely be Dems doing the heavy lifting, as most of the GOP will vote against raising the debt ceiling, etc.

But, I think the constant investigations, buoyed by a media who treats the investigations as even remotely legitimate, can wear on the voters over time.

And while there might not be any legislation coming out of the House with any hope of passing, having the House be run by the Jordans, Gosars, Boeberts, MTGs, Gohmerts, etc. etc. will have negative repercussions both domestically and abroad, in similar fashion to Trump’s mere existence as President. We’ll be a full and complete clown show.

When the ICU numbers soar, it shows once again that hospitalizations and ER and bed utilization isn’t incidental to covid, but the result of covid being exponentially worse in magnitude than just a few weeks ago.

That fewer are dying on a per capita basis is small comfort for those watching family dying of covid despite vaccinations being widely available. Far too many aren’t vaccinating.

White GOPers are among the least vaccinated. But we have to do better for all folks, since it takes enough people vaccinating to protect the community.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind Biden gets impeached with a quickness if the House changes hands. None. McConnell might try to talk them out of it, but the crazies will be running the House.

Other things I’d expect to happen: Rep. Omar, if not the entire Squad, will be removed from committee assignments. There will be a large number of “select” committees, after the GOP refuse to seat Democrats on a number of the committees pursuing sham investigations. The number of crazy people testifying in Congress will be eleventy billion. A report will be issued stating COVID originated in a lab. Some kind of report will come out stating Trump did everything right with respect to COVID (the number of Trump hagiographies will be sickening). Insane amounts of money will be spent on “audits” similar to the freakshow from AZ. Bills will pass the House making it illegal for Biden to impose vaccine mandates. A non-binding resolution in praise of Ashli Babbit.

Though I haven’t seen the map, apparently the Kentucky GOP did not try to crack the 3rd Congressional District (currently represented by John Yarmuth) in order to eliminate the last Democratic Congressman. Yarmuth is retiring, and a least a couple of Democrats are running to replace him in the only Democratic leaning congressional district in the state.

Considering the Renaissance artists all had patrons, I don’t think it’s all that different than before. Modern art is more about what do you do when the camera can capture an image perfectly.
