Bon Iver - Second Nature (From ‘Don’t Look Up’)

To be honest I was lukewarm about the film, not because I’m a climate change denier but because too much (not all) of it was heavy-handed, leaden, and obvious, despite a stellar cast — but the song Justin Vernon composed for it is sublime.

Official “Second Nature” Lyrics:

Is this our first? or second nature?
When’s that Rapture…will there be merch?
Where is mother — she was a stunner, can we page her?
What mine eyes have seen could really take the Purse…
Are we charged now? or are we Fakers?
Parade around or get in work? Or just desert…

We will see you next time
They’ll be water in the rain
Territories pay fines
All long day (SAY IT WILL BE! SAY IT WILL BE!)
All may not be just fine! (All LONG DAY!)
There is another fate, a way
To not be too late: Un obfuscate

Is this our fault? and are We just too damn used to it…
The cipher too elusive and that tale it just won’t stop
You could vaguely on top, strike the key, lay down the mop
As if endings ain’t endings and feet they just won’t drop
Ain’t this Real time? And aren’t we Takers?
You want what’s more and don’t excuse…
And just REFUSE…

We will see you next time (Is this mercy?)
They’ll be water in the rain
Territories Pay Fines
All Long Day (SAY IT WITH ME! SAY IT WITH ME!)
All may not be just fine! (All LONG DAY!)
There is another fate, a way
To not be too late…

We will see you next time
They’ll be water in the rain
Territories Pay Fines
All Long Day (SAY IT WITH ME! SAY IT WITH ME!)
All may not be just fine! (All LONG DAY!)
There is another fate, a way
To not be too late: Un obfuscate

Isaac hit the nail squarely on the head.

And yesterday was his birthday, or at least the date he claimed, since there were no records from Russia. He’d have turned 102.

Yes. He was a great writer and visionary.

I idolized him growing up… even wrote him a letter (and got a response!)

In later years his reputation has been tarnished a bit - he did not treat women well. But I still enjoy reading him.

Many of the SF greats of that generation had some significant … let’s say foibles. Clarke, Heinlein, Asimov, Dick, etc. all had significant flaws.

Maybe Mailer’s work can enter the public domain and be published on Gutenberg or the Internet Archive. The famous editor of Astounding, John Campbell, was published this way: His collected editorials are on Gutenberg.

Sadly, I have never been able to read more than a few pages of Campbell. Even in his time, he was hard, hard, HARD right, never mind today. The editorials of Readers Digest, and the Manchester Union-Leader on roids. Heavy roids, with rage included!

Mailer would no doubt hate Piers. Way down in that thread is a glorious SCTV bit with Eugene Levy as Mailer trying to write ad for a detergent and Martin Short as Gore Vidal whose clothes “Mailer” bloodies in a brawl.

“…Ernby was a political newcomer when she ran for the 74th Assembly District seat in 2020. She campaigned on plans to enhance border security, enact “tough love” policies for homeless people, promote environmental protections with proven results and oppose all new taxes, calling herself a “pro-business, pro-taxpayer, political outsider” who wanted to “bring back conservative values in California.” She also spoke publicly against government mandates requiring people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.”

Crenshaw keeps trying for his Sister Souljah Moment with MTG.

I suppose his desire to be a big somebody in the GOP has led him to calculate that MTG will ruin whatever chances he has with the not-rabidly-wingnut section of the GOP masses.

It’s not going to work. Crenshaw himself is a smarmy politician of the Ted Cruz type. Trying to call MTG a “Democrat” is just a form of dog-whistling.

“…The presence of these extraordinary forces under the control of the Attorney General—and mostly operating under contingency plans that Congress and the U.S. Capitol Police were not privy to—added an additional layer of highly armed responders. The role that the military played in this highly classified operation is still unknown, though FBI sources tell Newsweek that military operators seconded to the FBI, and those on alert as part of the National Mission Force, were present in the metropolitan area. The lingering question is: What was it that the Justice Department saw that provoked it to see January 6 as an extraordinary event, something that the other agencies evidently missed.”

John Campbell wasn’t much of an editor; he was fucking CREDULOUS and gave us Dianetics and L. Ron Hubbard in 1950. The Wikipedia gives us a LOT of information, including this bit:

Campbell had been one of Hubbard’s early test subjects and believed that Hubbard’s techniques had cured his persistent sinusitis, so he was an enthusiastic supporter. In a letter to one of Astounding’s contributors, Jack Williamson, he wrote: “I know dianetics is one of, if not the greatest, discovery of all Man’s written and unwritten history. It produces the sort of stability and sanity men have dreamed about for centuries.”

Yeah, I learned that when I went through a period of not dealing at all with my gastric issues. I ended up in the ER twice. The first time I walked in, the second I called an ambulance. I got seen faster from the ambulance ride. Both times it was acid reflux. But I can tell you why people drive themselves over to the ER if they can—because the cost of an ambulance ride is completely out of this world. At the beginning of 2021, the statutory cost of an ambulance ride in Maricopa County was $997.05. Don’t get sick up in the high country or you might end up paying twice that.

ETA: my mom lives less than 2 miles from the local ER and the heart hospital. He is going to bundle her up into the car and drive her over and not call an ambulance for a $1,000 ride, because there ain’t nobody who can afford that.

Update to the Great South Jersey COVID watch:

So just found out about 35 minutes ago the middle niece does have COVID. She’s a teen and has had at least two shots, so she should be okay. My sister says the virus is behaving like a bad cold, so fingers crossed. The niece picked it up from someone she was hanging out with on NYE.

Unfortunately, that leaves four more people in the house who are potential carriers right now. My sister’s a teacher and the BiL works for a major delivery company, so there’s that headache as well.

So goddamned thankful that my siblings aren’t MAGAts and/or vax deniers.

As for us: we weren’t wearing N95s, but we were wearing masks with filters. Never say never, but hopefully we can dodge this bullet again. Shit, this could be my third near miss in two weeks.

I most likely will have to cancel my morning dentist appointment.

Absolutely frightening how quickly Omi is spreading.

The last ambulance ride I took was just a few blocks. The crew that picked me up weren’t particularly urgent about anything because I was bleeding out internally from a burst spleen and nothing showed, but I was pretty woozy. They actually asked me if I wanted them to turn the siren on, like I was the person to make that call. I figured the hospital was just a few blocks, so yeah, never mind, we’ll go in silence, and stop for the lights.
I don’t recall the cost, but I guess that ambulance ride and my blood pressure jumped me to the front of the line.

I’ve had two ambulance rides in my life. Both times it was because my back went out and I could barely stand, let alone walk.

I forget what the last one was, but the first one was just over 17 years ago. Cost me $500 ($711 in 2022) to go 6 miles/25 minutes.

Jesus Christ, can you imagine telling someone from Canada or Europe that Americans sometimes actively avoid calling an ambulance because it’s too expensive?

We just okayed a nearly $800 billion military budget, but people are driving themselves to the hospital because ambulances are a luxury.

My last ride was for sepsis, and Medicare and the Medicare Supplement paid for it. And yep, I went straight in. Fortunately it was in 2019, so not involved with covid hysteria. Unfortunately, they were building on to the hospital, and were under-roomed and under-staffed. It made the week I was there really more unpleasant than it already was.

Hang on it to as long as you can, and hopefully you’ll never need it.

On the This Week in Tech podcast, there’s a UK-born panelist who pops up time-to-time. For whatever reason, the subject one time turned to Breaking Bad and Walt’s main motivation for turning to drug dealing: to provide for his family as his cancer treatments are bankrupting him.

This guy says that in England (and I’m guessing the rest of Europe as well as Canada), people do not understand the premise. They can’t wrap their heads around the concept of a health system that could destroy you financially if you get sick. It’s just not a thing.

Everything we’ve seen so far indicates that the central conspirators intended to work within the boundaries of the law, even if they were twisting it into such a pretzel that no self-respecting lawyer would have been willing to argue it before a court. Orchestrating a lynch mob seems to be have been more Trump’s doing, and the rest went along with it until it became apparent that it was doing more damage to their efforts than any possible good.

It remains my belief that the presence of an unruly mob outside the Capital Building was always part of the original plan but storming the castle was not.

Storming the castle was always part of the Proud Boys’ and Oathkeepers’ plan. And Trump watched them execute it for hours on tv without intervening.

re: #96 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

There were plenty of examples of that as well.

I’d argue that the bulk of ST’s famous episodes over the series have either been about the conflict between the ideal and the reality of meeting races and galactic powers or of Starfleet officers failing to live up to it. The writers on TNG actually had a term for trying to write drama while working within the constraints of his vision of what future humanity would be: “The Roddenberry Box.” He’d take you aside and tell you that Earth was a paradise, that all conflict had been resolved, nobody wanted for basic needs, and that all those “petty” impulses that we’d once devoted ourselves to were gone. Then he’d tell you to go write drama.

Which is why Star Trek was set entirely in space where the crew met new aliens every week to have conflict with. I can’t think of any episodes of the original series set on Earth.*

*Except when they time traveled into the past where conflict did exist.

and other “alternate Earth” planets/holodeck programs. Plus TNG had a two-part episode set in ca. 1900 San Francisco, several set in a fictional early 1900’s Irish town, a return to 1990’s California (how convenient) some set in a parallel-history WW2 and subplots involving Victorian England and the US Civil War, and of course Whorf as a very un-merry Merry Man.

The television presenter passed away just days after his identical twin, Grichka. The brothers are both reported to have succumbed to COVID-19.

“In peace and love, surrounded by his children and his family, Igor Bogdanoff left for the light on Monday January 3, 2022,” says a statement released by Bogdanoff’s family via his agent, the Sun reported. He is survived by his ex-wife, the writer Amélie de Bourbon-Parme, and their six children.

Grichka was reportedly hospitalized on Dec. 18 after falling ill with the novel coronavirus. He passed away Dec. 28.

That episode was supposed to set up a new series that was never made.

“City on the Edge of Forever” (written famously by Harlan Ellison, who actually published his original script, with grumpy annotations, in a fit of pique at Roddenberry’s gall in having dared to edit the thing), and “Assignment: Earth” respectively. Teri Garr has nothing good to say about her guest appearance there, and wishes people would quit asking her about it.

There was another — “Tomorrow Is Yesterday” — where they get thrown back in time and accidentally show up on 1960s USAF radar. Fighter pilot sees an undeniable UFO, and the Fearless Crew has to beam down and “fix the timeline” so they can get home. It was the first Dorothy Fontana script for the series that she got full credit for.

But yeah, Roddenberry (a veteran of westerns) had pitched the show to Paramount as a “wagon train in space” schtick, and sold it in part with the line that they could reuse stock sets and costumes by having a Roman world, a Western world, a 20C office-block world, a gangster world, etc. Plus lots of “underground city” worlds where they wouldn’t have to shoot on location… and “ship in a bottle” episodes where they wouldn’t even have to book time on non-core sets at all.

(EDIT: I goofed, Batman was a Fox/ABC production, so M:I was Paramount/NBC’s only big-budget teen drama) After all, Paramount already had two shows going into production aimed at the same audience, with gigantic budgets. _Batman_ would become the most expensive show on television, and _Mission: Impossible_ wasn’t far behind. The Star Trek crew used to raid both of those shows’ dumpsters for props, in fact.

Come to think of it, I wonder how many times Gene had to turn down requests from the executives to do a _Batman_ crossover. Wouldn’t that have been something.

Germany offers regular testing and home kids are relatively cheap (although they have been hard to find since the Omicron outbreak) but it means that venues can be open to people who are vaxed, recovered or recently tested.

Meanwhile, the Florida SG is still acting like testing is some sort of invasion of privacy…

When the ICU numbers soar, it shows once again that hospitalizations and ER and bed utilization isn’t incidental to covid, but the result of covid being exponentially worse in magnitude than just a few weeks ago.

That fewer are dying on a per capita basis is small comfort for those watching family dying of covid despite vaccinations being widely available. Far too many aren’t vaccinating.

White GOPers are among the least vaccinated. But we have to do better for all folks, since it takes enough people vaccinating to protect the community.

I wonder how long that will last. The new Czech government has quietly begun discussing when they’ll phase out vaccine passports, at least for everyday use. There’s also some pressure on them, as the Constitutional Court here is expected to rule on the use of vaccine passports sometime in the next couple months or so, and the new government reckons they need to have some idea of where to go next if (as expected*), the CC rules against vaccine passports for non-international travel.

* - The Constitutional Court here is pretty libertarian, and prioritizes individual rights over collective rights, a legacy from the Communist era, where there pretty much was no such thing as “individual rights”.

Other than some loud and vocal (sometimes violent) fringe groups, there is little widespread opposition to vaccine passports or the “3-G Regel” (I guess we could call it the “VRT Rule”: Vaccinated, Recovered or Tested) for access to most indoor venues except shops for everyday necessities.

I can accept that a certain things were considered harmless and simply accepted back then, but that does not make them acceptable today.

But it does teach us a lot about the significance of context, like the Jefferson Airplane appearing in blackface on the Smothers Brothers Show, ostensibly in support of the 1968 black Olympic athletes, but nonetheless quite laughable despite the best intentions at the time.

If you’re planning to do mostly plain sewing, you’re probably better off getting one made before about 1980 and in good condition. They still made them to last, and used metal instead of plastic.

Thanks to all of you who gave me your opinions on sewing machines. I am thinking of getting one in near future but right now I am still doing research.

If you’re still looking for advice on that, I’d recommend Brother or Janome. Both make solid machines, but don’t buy anyone’s bottom of the line, designed to sell at a big box store model. Sometimes they’re fine, sometimes not.
Most people recommend buying from a reputable dealer just because if you have a problem, they’ll deal with it. That is more important on a fancy machine since there’s more that can go wrong, but generally is good advice. Also, you can discuss your needs with them and actually try out machines.

The issue with older machines is that if they are electronic the board will die sooner or later and can’t be replaced. Not an issue with mechanical machines, but 40 or 50 year old machines can have wiring issues. That said, I do have Mom’s old Featherweight and it works fine 70 years on.

Depending on what kind of sewing you plan to do, you may not need a lot of different stitches, I rarely go beyond straight, zig-zag, and “stepped” zig-zag (aka mending) stitches. If you want to sew garments, get a good buttonhole stitch. If you want to sew through 3 layers of heavy canvas, you’ll need a machine with the power to do that.
Stitch evenness and quality are important.

Last year he received the Stentrode BCI, a stent-mounted electrode array implanted through the jugular. Synchron claims his initial tweets represent the first time someone has written texts on social media via a BCI. Synchron CEO Thomas Oxley said, “They highlight the connection, hope, and freedom that BCIs give to people like Phil who have had so much of their functional independence taken away due to debilitating paralysis.”

Where I am and where I’m from, there would’ve been a direct military response to what happened in DC on the 6th, with quite expectable results given what type of units would be used.
Also, where I live and where I’m from any service members partaking in the coup attempt would face treason or even high treason charges for their effort, as the service oath is very specific about such things.
And where I’m from, treason and high treason were among the last crimes for which the death penalty could be used in wartime (it was removed in 1984 there if memory serves me right).
It triggers some to no end when I explain that what some service members did on the 6th would lead to charges almost invariably leading to imprisonment for life where I live and where I’m from. And that under the laws here, it is treason and/or high treason.

But the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals will be 100% on board with this, and so it will go to SCOTUS. They are likely to shoot it down, but that’s still time on the clock where unvaccinated idjits get to be treated as normal people, instead of as unvaccinated idjits.

In other words, they’ll make a lot of noise and do nothing of consequence for two years, which might be the best we can expect from the repugs.

I don’t expect anything to pass beyond the very bare minimum to keep things functioning. But even in that regard, it will largely be Dems doing the heavy lifting, as most of the GOP will vote against raising the debt ceiling, etc.

But, I think the constant investigations, buoyed by a media who treats the investigations as even remotely legitimate, can wear on the voters over time.

And while there might not be any legislation coming out of the House with any hope of passing, having the House be run by the Jordans, Gosars, Boeberts, MTGs, Gohmerts, etc. etc. will have negative repercussions both domestically and abroad, in similar fashion to Trump’s mere existence as President. We’ll be a full and complete clown show.

But we have to do better for all folks, since it takes enough people vaccinating to protect the community.

and I was just about to give Ron Desantis an apology!

Or because you have the posse commitatus precedent, the threat would have to be enough to excuse going against it. Probably in the same ballpark where treason becomes high treason here and where I come from, i.e. your coup attempt had a realistic chance of succeeding (even if it only failed because you tripped over your own dick).

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind Biden gets impeached with a quickness if the House changes hands. None. McConnell might try to talk them out of it, but the crazies will be running the House.

Other things I’d expect to happen: Rep. Omar, if not the entire Squad, will be removed from committee assignments. There will be a large number of “select” committees, after the GOP refuse to seat Democrats on a number of the committees pursuing sham investigations. The number of crazy people testifying in Congress will be eleventy billion. A report will be issued stating COVID originated in a lab. Some kind of report will come out stating Trump did everything right with respect to COVID (the number of Trump hagiographies will be sickening). Insane amounts of money will be spent on “audits” similar to the freakshow from AZ. Bills will pass the House making it illegal for Biden to impose vaccine mandates. A non-binding resolution in praise of Ashli Babbit.

Given the precedent Trump Administration officials set, Dr. Fauci can simply refuse to appear before Congress to testify. Or he can show up and take a flamethrower to Rand Paul, like he’s done in the past.

They got the headlines wrong:

Omicron Variant Symptoms: Latest COVID ‘Making People Really Sick in a Different Way’

It should read people with sore throats and runny noses unnecessarily filling up emergency rooms.

“Every patient I’ve seen with Covid that’s had a 3rd ‘booster’ dose has had mild symptoms. By mild I mean mostly sore throat. Lots of sore throat. Also some fatigue, maybe some muscle pain. No difficulty breathing. No shortness of breath. All a little uncomfortable, but fine,” Spencer wrote.

That is from an ER Doctor.

Yes. I should have listed this. It will get even worse for Fauci in terms of his safety.

Jay McInerny, in Bright Lights, Big City, had a character speculate about the future of literature and how it would be about the ebb and flow of large sums of wealth.

That has come to manifest itself it Modern Art, which is more about the sums paid and the currency used than about the works of art themselves.

Though I haven’t seen the map, apparently the Kentucky GOP did not try to crack the 3rd Congressional District (currently represented by John Yarmuth) in order to eliminate the last Democratic Congressman. Yarmuth is retiring, and a least a couple of Democrats are running to replace him in the only Democratic leaning congressional district in the state.

Considering the Renaissance artists all had patrons, I don’t think it’s all that different than before. Modern art is more about what do you do when the camera can capture an image perfectly.
