Bruce Hornsby Solo: “Cast-Off”

Music • Views: 20,423

Song Five of our series of solo performances from Bruce’s Deep South Solo Tour from November 2021 showcases “Cast-Off,” a song co-written with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and debuted on Bruce’s 2019 album Absolute Zero. Sparked from unused film cue originally intended for Spike Lee, Bruce has described “Cast-Off” as “a song about acceptance and even gratitude in the face of rejection, egolessness, patience and humility.”

In other news, I deliberately stayed away from the boards as I went through my rage-cycle after Simena’s speech. I’ve progressed from white-hot anger, gone through ‘hell, let the Republicans have it all’ despair, and am now at righteous fury. Make Simena and Manchin go on record. After that, every candidate should declare their opposition to the filibuster and cast it as going against out of touch politicians stuck in the past.

Even Manchin didn’t piss me off quite this much with his BS. However, they’re both staggeringly unintelligent and unwilling to learn anything that might contradict their point of view. In that way, they are no better than Republicans.

QL’ed … I’m gonna blame it on trying to Internet while sick.

(regarding the Supreme Court’s bogus occupational hazard test, which is going to rank up there with Lochner in stupidity eventually)

Bull-SHIT! I want to take those numbnuts and have them sit in the room over at the data center that I worked in prior to March 2020, do my job sans masks (really masks and headsets do not go together) and not get sick.

For the record, before I logged off work sick Thursday, I’d just gotten an email from our chief operating officer stating that the return to office program had been suspended for now and no date yet for its resumption. I have to wonder if the Rona is sweeping through large congregate groups of people (e.g., people who work in various agent roles—banker, fraud) & who are required to work in the office.

And in completely other news, we have “little rocket man” apparently popping off missiles into the Sea of Japan:

Japan’s government says North Korea has launched what may have been a ballistic missile.

Japan’s defense ministry announced at 3 P.M. on Friday that the North had fired the projectile.

Officials from the Japanese Coast Guard say it may have already landed. Prime Minister Kishida has called for a prompt investigation of the launch.

This is the third time North Korea has fired a projectile since the start of the year.

www3.nhk.or.jp

I think it’s the second time this week NK has sent a missile over the Sea of Japan. Dunno what Kim Jong Un thinks he’s doing here.

ETA: And yeah still feeling disoriented if I do much of anything. Blargh.

Ayep. Kept running counts of the number of EOs he passed, declaring that they were “the most by any president EVAH!” Then Trump took office and immediately they wanted him to rule by fiat.

Interesting comment on Florida law…the survivor gets the prize:

Unless the surveillance cameras and eyewitnesses tell a very different story than the one being reported, Kuczwanski’s death will fall under the Sunshine State’s very expansive view of self-defense. In fact, under Florida’s gun laws, if Kuczwanski did indeed shoot first, he would—had he survived—likely been able to make the same claim of self-defense

Yeah, we’ve talked about that one. Dead dude was previously a road rager at the SAME intersection previously and flashed a gun then too. Was convicted of assault and disorderly conduct then (2014) but apparently didn’t learn his lesson. Prius dude will not be charged.

Shropshire Slasher  Jan 14, 2022 • 4:26:13am
Starting this month, users selling goods and services through such popular sites as Venmo, Etsy and Airbnb will begin receiving tax forms if they take a payment of more than $600. One by one in recent months, tech giants have been warning users of the coming changes and asking them to provide tax information. “Until this year, the threshold was much higher ($20,000 and 200 transactions) so it didn’t affect nearly as many people,” Venmo told users in its messages about the change. “This requirement only pertains to payments received for sales of goods and services and does not apply to friends and family payments.” The moves have sparked outcry on social media. For one thing, the lower threshold comes as more and more Americans bet on themselves: a record 5.4 million adults applied to form their own business last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released this week. That’s partly because it’s easier than ever to use apps to sell crafts, provide services or rent out a second or third home online.

For some, the changes are at odds with President Joe Biden’s vow to tax wealthier Americans.

Unreal.

Train tracks used for freight-transport in Los Angeles resembled a garbage dump Thursday as thieves have been raiding cargo containers and leaving shipping packaging in their wake.

The screwy scene at a section of Union Pacific train tracks was captured by CBSLA - which also filmed an apparent thief darting from the area while carrying packages.

The sea of scrapped cardboard contained discarded items from Amazon, REI and other popular retailers, the outlet reported.

Union Pacific acknowledged the “cargo thefts” in a statement to the news station and said they have taken steps to crack down on the crimes.

The tracks were cleaned up a month ago too.

“Baby Shark,” the inescapable earworm beloved by some children and often feared by their parents, has hit a new milestone — 10 billion views on YouTube.

Not only is it the most-viewed video on the platform, a record it set in November 2020, but it’s now the only video on the site to reach 10 billion views, YouTube confirmed to CNN.
The kids’ song, masterminded by South Korean educational company Pinkfong and performed by Korean-American singer Hope Segoine, debuted in 2016 and was a viral hit in Asia but didn’t jam itself into Americans’ collective consciousness until 2019. Since then, it’s been turned into a Nickelodeon TV show, a cereal, a live show and the rallying cry of the Washington Nationals throughout their World Series-winning season. It even made the Billboard Top 40 at one point and inspired the Jamie Tartt chant on Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.”

“Russia shall expand its borders to the stand of 1917, including Baltic countries and Finland”, - Russia’s Deputy Parliament President, Head of Russian delegation to coe Tolstoy said amid his meeting with journalists.

He confirms what I have maintained all along: this is not a New Cold War, which was a world-wide struggle of ideologies, but a plan on part of Putin to re-establish the Russian Empire and to bring all those expat Russians in the former Soviet republics back heim ins Reich.

no one complains about getting a w-2 or a 1099 for interest on your bank account. we’re used to those.

if your w-2 gets lost in the mail and you dont receive it, youre still supposed to report the exact same salary and deductions

same if your bank’s 1099 gets lost. you still report the interest income

service 1099’s are not any different….except

It only needs one recipient in a million to fall for a given scam for it to make the scammers a shitload of cash. You may recall the hacked Twitter scam a little while back, where “Bill Gates” promised to double someone’s payment of Bitcoin — send Bill a thousand bucks worth of Bitcoin and he’d sent back two thousand dollars worth.

There were enough stupid people with Bitcoin burning a hole in their pocket that over five hundred suckers fell for that particular scam. Sure, five hundred million people who saw this scam ignored it, the scammers still made a cool half-million from the edge-cases.

I started to read Hillbilly Elegy and I recalled the Appalachian influx into our northern Industrial town.

This was at the height of the Golden Age of the American Worker: a steel roller like my dad could afford to let my mom stay home in our three-bedroom house, with a mid-sized Ford in the garage, and could still put us through (state) college, etc.

And even back then, many of the white folks in our neighborhood were terribly racist and convinced that the more that those n*****s, had, the less there was left for “their own people”

Don’t forget America and the United Kingdom along with a number of other countries such as Italy and Greece — one of Britain’s top regiments has the battle honour “Arkhangelsk 1920” on their colours. The Russians still have a captured British tank on display there.

There was also the abortive Japanese invasion (from the East this time) in 1936 but it was not really aimed at Moscow, more at grabbing off big chunks of Siberia.

Anyone been getting these fancy new spam calls that actually address you by name? I actually thought it was a real call the first time, because they actually stop the spiel and wait for a response before continuing. When I tried to interrupt the ‘caller’ and tell ‘her’ I wasn’t interested ‘she just kept going.

Second time I didn’t say anything to see how it would react. Shorter pauses in between recorded bits.

Russia has nothing else to attract attention or inspire admiration or fear. It’s a failed state with a large army and a lot of nukes. China is an economic powerhouse with some very serious structural flaws, but what does Russia have, other than raw materials? It has an educated workforce, unable to produce sufficient quantities of goods and services to provide its people with a decent lifestyle.

It’s being ravaged by COVID, which it handles the Florida way, by concealing the true data, though it finally appears to be acknowledging the existence of omicron by a slowly rising case count. Its COVID vaccine has not been approved by WHO, while both Beijing and India have 2 vaccines that meet WHO standards.

If Russia didn’t rattle its sabers, it would be totally ignored on the world stage. That said, Austria-Hungary was a failed state too when it took the measures that initiated WWI.

It has raw materials, especially gas. Europe is going through a now-typical winter of gas shortages and soaring prices and Russian gas is what is keeping Europe from freezing to death in the dark. The native European gas production facilities like the North Sea and Groningen in Holland are gradually turning off the taps, having drained their reserves to pay for fifty years of prosperity and the Russians, frankly, have us over a barrel-slash-pipeline for our energy needs.

I sometimes think that the big renewables propaganda effort in Western Europe over the past few decades was a plot by Moscow to ensure our future dependency on their gas supplies.

He got the American Rescue Plan and the hard Infrastructure plan. He doesn’t need a 60 seat majority — he needs only 2 real Democrats to get things through. He is getting judges approved. Remember: Republicans wanted to repeal the ACA and they failed. It’s just that Democrats aren’t as successful at messaging as Republicans.

Not deliberate — just an example of the total ignorance of the GOP. They probably never heard of Stephen Douglas. Frederick Douglass is the only historical “Douglas” whose name is familiar to them.

How much of that lack of success in messaging is media laying blame of GOP intransigence at Dem fee and reporting every little thing as somehow Bad News For Dems, even with actual messaging apparatuses working to promote the Dem side of things? Kind of hard to have successful messaging when the outlets for it insist on exclusively allowing the GOP to frame everything.

Internet personality, boxer, and Pokémon fan Logan Paul made news last month after spending $3.5 million dollars on a box of supposedly “sealed & authenticated” first-edition Pokémon cards. However, shortly after announcing his purchase, many in the Pokémon card community pointed out that the box was probably fake. In response, Paul headed to Chicago to check the cards, and today he announced that, yup, it was all fake. Paul spent all that money on boxes of G.I. Joe cards. *Insert Sad trumpet.mp3 here*

A federal grand jury in Maryland has indicted Marilyn Mosby, the state’s attorney for Baltimore City, on two counts of perjury and making false statements on mortgage applications that she allegedly used toward the purchase of two vacation properties in Florida, according to a case unsealed Thursday.

Mosby gained national prominence after filing charges against the six officers who arrested 25-year-old Freddie Gray in 2015. His death while in police custody led to several days of protests and at times violent unrest in Baltimore. None of the officers were eventually convicted on the charges.

MORE: Top prosecutor receives a racist voicemail, posts it on social media
The indictment alleges Mosby lied on federal loan applications, including one where she asserted she experienced “adverse financial consequences” in her position as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, while prosecutors say her gross salary of nearly $250,000 was never reduced in 2020. In fact, the indictment says Mosby’s gross salary increased by nearly $10,000 between 2019 and 2020.

As a result of her relief application, Mosby received $36,000, which she used “toward a down payment for a vacation home in Kissimmee Florida” that she purchased in September 2020.

heh. When I was stationed in Germany and REFORGER 84 was going on we’d have convoys of our 55-ton M-60A3’s going down the Autobahn at all of 50 kmph (downhill with a tailwind) while the Germans in their autos would weave in and out of the convoys at 150+ kmph. mrsdm plays wordlink, for years

it accepts many words we never heard of and dont show up in a google search
and it doesnt accept many obvious words
then it takes programming language commands that clearly arent otherwise words
and many foreign words that arent ‘shared’ into English. They are just foreign.

when she gets frustrated and finally gets one of these and screams, i remind her that these are not scrabble rules (no proper names). or any specific dictionary rules either.

someone made up a game
they picked a dictionary for reference. they update it or they dont.

it doesnt have to be logical or consistent, unless the developer states it in the rules (maybe even then)

Swedish word play. Trut can mean seagull, but it can also refer to the mouth. “Håll truten” means basically “shut up”. So the Swedish arm is “håller truten” (Holding ones mouth, or word playish, holding the seagull…)

I’m sure that’s it, just like Scrabble. Have to say what I like best about this is that it’s only one word per day so I can’t get sucked into wasting hours like playing Word Trip or Freecell. Being a retiree during a pandemic can leave me with hours of spare time.

I don’t know about you, but yesterday, I spent hours on that one bloody word. Hours. I, too, am glad that it’s only one word per day but it’s still a huge amount of time when you just cannot get it.

Well, the situation regarding Ukraine is heating up.

Remember that Putin was a major ally of tfg. Things play out slower irl foreign relations than in video games.

The Russian government has sent operatives into eastern Ukraine in preparation for potential sabotage operations that would serve as a pretext for invasion, the Biden administration said Friday.

“We have information that indicates Russia has already prepositioned a group of operatives to conduct a false-flag operation in eastern Ukraine,” a U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity under ground rules established by the Biden administration, said in an email. “The operatives are trained in urban warfare and in using explosives to carry out acts of sabotage against Russia’s own proxy-forces.”

KYIV — Ukraine reported a “massive cyberattack” on government websites Friday that exposed its vulnerabilities amid a deepening crisis with Russia and left experts puzzling over the ominous message left by the hackers: “Be afraid and expect the worst.”

Ukraine officials said it was too early to say who was behind the hack, but noted Russia had been behind similar attacks before. Analysts said the attack may be the work of nonstate agents, noting that the defacing government websites was not a sweeping or sophisticated hacking operation.

How NPR’s Steve Inskeep cracked the code for interviewing Trump
The veteran host used a ‘truth sandwich’ approach to counter the former president’s election lies
Margaret Sullivan
washingtonpost.com

Too many interviews make the newsmaker “the narrator of the story,” he explained — and particularly in these political times, “sometimes they are unreliable narrators.”
Presenting these conversations as raw Q&A’s means that the public is deprived of the necessary context. Deprived, too often, of truth. “You need extra voices, extra facts, extra context,” Inskeep said.
As the first snippets of the recorded interview were played for listeners just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, some essential context came in the form of an introductory dialogue between Inskeep and co-host Rachel Martin. At one point, Inskeep bluntly characterized his conversation with Trump with this straightforward observation: “He repeated his lies a lot.”
Crucially, NPR had chosen not to rush the long-awaited interview onto the airwaves, giving Inskeep and his team time to produce the segment smartly, with all the necessary background. “There’s almost no story that isn’t improved by holding it for a day,” Inskeep said. That isn’t always possible of course — sometimes the news won’t wait. But in this case, the extra time paid off.

What the fuck is this shit? This has literally NOTHING to do with President Biden whatsoever. He’s not forcing any of these companies to start cracking down on people.

It was actually a provision in the American Rescue plan that reduced the 1099K reporting threshold to $600. So he sort of had a lot to do with it.
