OK so I made a run to the kosher bodega and now I am all stocked up on the essentials. Let the snows commence! Maybe tomorrow I will make cinnamon bread, after making waffles for breakfast.

Time to bring out the Mark Twain Weather Quotes:

Cold! If the thermometer had been an inch longer we’d all have frozen to death.
- quoted in Mark Twain and I, Opie Read

Shut the door. Not that it lets in the cold but that it lets out the cozyness.
- Mark Twain’s Notebook

The captain had been telling how, in one of his Arctic voyages, it was so cold that the mate’s shadow froze fast to the deck and had to be ripped loose by main strength. And even then he got only about two-thirds of it back.

Oops. CL’d.

Court TV is covering the TN Waffle House shootings from 2018. They were interviewing one of the forensics officers. The shooter had a Kimber carry pistol that failed to go into battery. The slide wouldn’t return to the proper position when a new round was loaded. The lawyer questioning her asked if this was as intended by the manufacturer. I scoffed a bit after she said “No.” and said to myself “Oh, absolutely it is.”. Some of you know what I’m talking about.

Yeah, we started out as probably getting 10” to wintry mix as the storm seems to be trending just north of us. Too soon to say, though. Last week we were expected to get at least 12” but the nor’easter stayed just east of us and we only got 6”. I’d be happy to just get rain.

1. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FIREARM POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION.
2. TREAT ALL FIREARMS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED.
3. KEEP YOUR TRIGGER FINGER OUTSIDE THE GUARD AND OFF OF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE.
4. BE CERTAIN OF YOUR TARGET, YOUR LINE OF FIRE, AND WHAT LIES BEYOND YOUR TARGET.

I like this version because of the wording of 4.

imo, you can have 4, 10 or 27 ‘rules’ and it still all comes down to the same thing:

Control your weapon at all times

EVERY time this discussion comes up it’s because somebody didn’t.

‘control’ means in use, misuse, brandishing, discharging, handling, theft, transporting, storing, transferring, (including sales, loans, gifts)

we don’t have to wait

this is clearly ‘misuse’

but there’s another factor - how and under what circumstances did whoever it was obtain the gun(s)? that imo is what makes the previous ‘owner’ also responsible.

Oops. CL’d.

I actually had that problem with my Kimber M1911 about 20 years ago.

In my case, some genius had changed the extractor style on that model from the tried and true 100 year old design. The new extractor design did not always get a good grip on the rim of the fired cartridge. Which meant the old round would not fully extract. Which meant that the new round would not load and the pistol was “jammed”.

I ended up corresponding with Kimber and they traded my Kimber for one with the good extractor. The new one did work predictably.

Democratic senator had a (real) stroke last week

Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) suffered a stroke last week and underwent surgery but is “expected to make a full recovery,” the Washington Post reports.

There are indications that the Senate Democratic leadership did not know about Lujan’s health problems until today.

Lujan’s office declined to comment when asked by NBC News when they expect the senator could return to work.

Nope, never went deer hunting with a pistol. With a shotgun or rifle, yes.

There are a few who pistol hunt successfully with iron sights. There are a few more who do it successfully with longer barreled pistols outfitted with scopes. Most of these folks spend many hours at the range firing thousands of rounds. And there are more who do it unsuccessfully.

About 20 years ago, I thought about it, and started spending a couple of hours 3 times a week at a local rifle/pistol range. I usually fired around 300-500 rounds an evening. After a year of practice I was fairly decent at hitting a static human sized target at 10 meters. I looked at the time, effort and money expended and decided that I had better things I could do.

I did not know any of this (but I was being snarky and referring to a post in the last thread wherein a guy claimed to be shooting at a deer on his neighbor’s property and “accidentally” killed the neighbor). I’ve never fired anything other than a .22—a couple of times at my granddad’s farm and at Boy Scouts summer camp one summer.

I spent a lot of time in the artillery and the number of shells available was always kept in mind. So I was curious about what a ship firing 1000 shells in one battle meant.

There was not much information quickly ‘googleable’. (Is that a word?)

But the one reference I could see was that a ship of the period typically carried around 50-60 cannonballs per gun. After that they actually would stick any debris they could find into the cannon and continue firing until the gunpowder ran out.

The USS Constellation (1797) was rated at 38 guns but often carried 48. (US frigates at the time were typically overgunned, which is one reason why they were able to do so well.) More guns usually means less space for other stuff, like cannon shells. But going with the 50 cannon balls per cannon meant around 2000-2500 cannon balls.

What this meant is that the USS Constellation shot off about half its ammunition in that single battle. I suspect that the Captain was kind of concerned that he save enough ammunition in case he got into another shoot-out. Assuming that the ammunition load had started out at full.

He told me that two young women, who have four female cats at home, sometimes sit next to him and Life, and Life won’t stop sniffing all over them. The activity the women and this cat buddy engage in outside of Safeway was referred to as ‘flying sign’. Buddy’s sign today said ‘anything helps’. I’m a sucker for that one.

With his signature eye patch and fiery speeches, Stewart Rhodes is among the most recognizable leaders of the anti-government movement — and one of its most controversial.

As founder of the Oath Keepers, part of the self-styled militia segment of the far right, Rhodes projected himself as the commander of a private army willing to confront “tyrannical” federal authorities and defend the Constitution by any means necessary.

In reality, according to extensive interviews with his associates and extremism trackers, Rhodes is a couch-surfing propagandist whose thousands of recruits paid membership dues but mostly acted as “keyboard warriors,” disseminating violent rhetoric but rarely showing up in great numbers when Rhodes called.

The Oath Keepers contingent that participated in the U.S. Capitol attack was among the biggest showings researchers have seen from the group — about two dozen members or associates, including Rhodes, have been charged with conspiracy, and a handful more face other charges related to individual actions they allegedly took that day.

It was also a moment that would implode the organization and alienate Rhodes from other anti-government leaders. Oath Keepers members, including those charged in the Capitol attack, bristled at what they see as Rhodes’s pattern of calling on followers to rise up and then abandoning them when they faced legal consequences.

“He sets the stage for other people to very quickly make the decision for themselves to engage in criminal or violent behavior,” said Sam Jackson, an extremism scholar whose book “Oath Keepers” traces Rhodes’s path from Army paratrooper to Yale Law graduate to far-right figure.

According to Wiki, the Constellation’s captain reported 1,229 rounds expended in his battle with the Vengeance; so assuming that they shot off a broadside from one side (port/starboard) at a time (no mention if they got to switch sides during the encounter), that means that each of, say, 20 gun crews was getting off a round every 4-1/2 minutes - for five hours straight.

No one’s forced to read the books in a library.

I guess I’m not the first person to think of this

No, but you’re one of the first people to say it out loud….that won’t stop racist Republicans from trying to do it anyway.

I got Maus from the library yesterday. I’ve never read it. Actually, it’s my first time reading a graphic novel.

My experience was Archie & Veronica when I was a kid.

Back to Maus. I’m blown away. One thing I dialed in on last night was while the conversation was serious as shit, the drawing of the family at the table was!!!!

This interaction between Anja & their son Richieu!!!

yes, this happens routinely in my household. even worse, my cat likes to park her feet on the pillow side, so all those times I’ve thought that my pillow smelled oddly like somebody’s feet, I was not wrong. Sometimes it smelled like somebody’s ass, but I already knew that was also the cat, so that wasn’t really a problem. The feet, though, was a real mystery for a while.

Two years into the pandemic, the coronavirus is killing Americans at far higher rates than people in other wealthy nations, a sobering distinction to bear as the country charts a course through the next stages of the pandemic,” the New York Times reports.

“Some of the reasons for America’s difficulties are well known. Despite having one of the world’s most powerful arsenals of vaccines, the country has failed to vaccinate as many people as other large, wealthy nations. Crucially, vaccination rates in older people also lag behind certain European nations.”

Looks like (?) a whole day of snow Thursday?

Down here in South Austin, it’s not the snow, but the expected 1/3” of ice that is making my butt inhale a seat cushion.

A Texas man is a pretty poor driver in the rain, but in snow he is a fool and on ice he thinks he is Superman.

A Texas woman, on the other hand, stocks up the larder before a winter storm and asks her husband after it starts to get her a six-pack of Shiner’s and a box of Marlboro Lights down the hill at the C-store and grabs the video camera to flog content to America’s Funniest Home Videos.

Hilarity and insurance adjusters ensue.

It’s ice we’re worried about up here as well. Dallas ISD has already decided to close Thursday and Friday. It will be interesting to see how long Rockwall holds out.

Right up until a City/County Commissioner hears *tink tink* on the roof and panics.

I moved to Austin on Feb 3rd, 1989, and the next night we got 2” of glazed ice covering the entire metro. The upper deck of I-35 was closed through downtown for a week because they couldn’t get equipment up the inclines because TxDOT never imagined that the weather could do that.

Aggie Engineers, dontcha know.

In Jen Psaki’s voice: Who are these atheists, satanists, and pagans you speak of?

I remember the “We are a Christian Nation” arguments surfacing right about the time that the Campus Crusade for Christ were going room to room at the dormitories. Hardly a coincidence.
